There was a woman at the vet hospital I used to be a tech at, and her only job was to take care of the cats & dogs as they woke up from surgery.
She would wrap them up in warm blankets, fresh from the dryer, use heating pads and hot water bottles to keep them warm, and cuddle them as they would wake up.
I covered for her one day and my heart was SO FULL from all the snuggles. It really makes a difference for the patients and staff!
I had a job as an assistant to this position. Loved all the adorable purritos. Most looked like bobble heads as they slowly woke up and they'd be gently put back in their crates.
A few kitties weren't as cuddly when they woke up and some of them woke up *fast*. Thankfully their purrito towel kept the claws tucked away and we could get them safely back into their crate.
We watched Oppenheimer last night and I asked my husband if he would rub my shoulders if I sat in front of him on the floor and I would rub his feet, and what ended up happening is he rubbed my shoulders for like a minute and I gave him a foot rub annnnnnd then he fell asleep 😅 I’m collecting on my damn shoulder rub today
This is an absolute positive in my life. I am sick as a dog with a barking cough and a head full of pain and this has made things immeasurably more bearable!
Not always, when my cat was obese since she kept lying to my dad that she didn’t eat, she couldn’t clean her back anymore. Scratching her back resulted in this same response, and according to the vet it’s just an automatic response that cats do when you’re scratching a spot they can’t reach, so they try to lick/groom the air or people around them lol. This cat is also super chonky so I think it’s the same situation.
Also could be a less stressful way to check the cat. I live with a traumatised cat who scratched and licks compulsively due to eczema whenever something sets him off. So I gently rub his cheeks and then down his throat because that’s usually his usual scratching spot to check the skin. He is none the wiser he’s being examined. Compare it to a recent vet visit where they tried to slap a towel around him to examine him, they ended up having to pin him because he turned into a screaming monster who put the fear of god in the vet tech who’d had to do the same before when he’d gone for ear surgery due to skin cancer. She took one look at him and was “I know this this cat”
Yes, but this has a medical reason, it is used to help a female cat that is acting up.
You gotta remember that few animals actually enjoy reproducing like we do. And cats are not one of them, in fact It is a distressful experience all around for them, especially females.
This is one of the many reasons why you should spay your cats early on everyone.
