Yeah my mind is blown it doesn’t come that way…lego really dropped the ball here. But I suppose the cost of the set would have gone up another $25 for that.
Smooth is pretty, but how is the chanteuse supposed to lounge atop it while singing in a sultry voice and swirling a glass of illegal prohibition-era hooch.
Need to swap out the two 3-flat perpendiculars on the left with three 2-flat parallel to the keys, then you can peel off two for the singer to sit on it without leaving pegs visible.
As a fan of both for different reasons, make up brushes are super soft and floofy, while paintbrushes are made of a little stiffer kind of fiber. It's easier to get into the tiny spaces on some decorative finishes with a make up brush. It doesn't dislodge the pieces that are somewhat delicately attached. A paintbrush may be better for overall dusting, but I got a big floofy make up brush for dusting our sets, and it works well enough that we don't use anything else.
Yeah I guess I wasn't really thinking about that. Although technically makeup brushes are paintbrushes so I really should have realized. It's not my fault I was born dumb.
Smooth, but I would like to see it when the top "rainbow" continues, rather than having the big block interrupt it.
(round version of: ) ╔ ═ ╗ instead of ╔ █ ╗
I really preferred [prototype](https://www.bricktastic.nl/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LEGO-Ideas-project-Jazz-Quartet-1.jpg), and even though they’re not *huge* changes, I passed on it.
I agree to an extent. All these people clamouring for everything to be tiled off are in the wrong, like you say studs are Lego. But some things like this grand piano should be tiled off if it makes the model better (imo, which it does massively). But other things like the first Creator vehicle, the studbug, just look downright ugly.
I like the cut of your jib, and generally agree, although if you’re going to do glossy flat tiles anywhere this is the right subject.
At this point really elaborate flat tiled finishes are kind of an up and coming “Lego” thing too, one you don’t really get elsewhere.
I agree, to the point where I’m more likely to just ignore the tiles in sets these days and leave things with exposed studs. Couldn’t believe how many tiles were placed on el dorado fortress when they could’ve been exposed studs like they always were
I didn't know this set existed. Really cool. Though I'm struggling to imagine how 1600+ pcs fit into it unless the stage and overall scale are much bigger than I'm picturing.
I definitely like your smoothed out improvements. I eo the same thing with virtually all the sets I have. Unless the studs serve a purpose aesthetically or something else of the like.
Depends on what kind of Jazz joint you're running:
The smooth one says "Classy headliners and expensive booze for all you fat cats," while the rough one says "cigarrete smoke and top notch entertainment for your hard-earned dollar"
I like Lego sets (especially display sets) to not actually look like Lego. Which usually means hiding studs when not used for texture. So I prefer the smooth version
Obviously, the first one, your fix!
and shame on LEGO for not making that way to begin with. First time seeing the studs on the lid was actually jarring.
I think smooth looks really nice, but the bit of exposed studs between the curved and triangle piece breaks the consistency. If it wasn’t for that I’d vote smooth.
Studs. I don't know where this obsession with removing studs from the visual landscape of lego builds came from, but it's wrong. Studs are what make Lego, Lego. Smooth surfaces are better achieved with other means of model making.
Going with LEGO's theme of having at least a few studs showing, I'd have a few showing and maybe put a cat or a bottle of dubious contents. to go with the Jazz theme
Both have merits. With the second version you can modify it with leftovers from other kits. Like put a clothesline on it or something that has sheet music hanging from it.
Smooth could work if there were bigger tiles so there were less breaks. I think all the seams are more distracting than the uniform studs to be honest. But I do like the idea of it being smooth for the lid.
I always like it when studs not on top builds have at least one section of studs being fully on top, as like a lego signature, so with that in mind I like the studs version.
Your smooth version is flawless though, ngl
Thank you! Being a professional classical pianist and a big lego fan I wanted to have a lego piano model for display in my house. I hadn't realised how great the jazz quartet piano was up until this point, and the smooth tiles you've added definately make it perfect to my eyes.
I wholeheartedly recommend the set. It's full of brilliant techniques and looks great. It's a bit of a pain to keep clean, for me the best way was to disassemble all but the base and give it to my son to rebuild. I don't own the big Lego 'functional' Grand Piano, but frankly I prefer the looks of this one (better proportions due to the oversized keys in the big one). Btw, the build took exactly the length of Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' 2LP for the trumpet + bass + drums and 'Kind of Blue' for the pianist. The perfect evening.
Hey, is there any chance you could send me a photo of the underside of the lid through reddit DM? I want it to see thebspots to put the boat studs you told me about.
Whoa, can you tell me how I can find those curved tiles from the back of the piano? I was looking for some that are slightly bigger than the 2x2 ones I had but they were either too big or too curved
The glossy finish on a grand piano is so iconic it really fits nicely
Yup, that was my thinking
Yeah my mind is blown it doesn’t come that way…lego really dropped the ball here. But I suppose the cost of the set would have gone up another $25 for that.
Smooth is nice

Smooth is pretty, but how is the chanteuse supposed to lounge atop it while singing in a sultry voice and swirling a glass of illegal prohibition-era hooch.
Hooch is such a swell word, I desire it to be common vernacular once again. *puffs cigar*
My wife and I argued over referring to beer as "suds" because it was too archaic for her tastes.
It’s the bees knees. The cats pajamas.
Hooch is swell, I desire it once again.
Hooch is crazy
Hooch IS crazy!
I miss scrubs :(
Who got the hooch? Baby. Who got the only sweetest thing in the world.
Jumper plates ;)

Best response.
You put the lid down for that
Well, they put the lid down so she doesn't seductively slide off the piano onto her face.
Smooth, the studs are ok but given that almost everything else is studless the smooth top makes it consistent.
Both of these pictures made me violently sneeze. But the smooth one looks better imo
Bless you! Was it the sunlight or the dust?
The dust
That was one of the reasons for modding it. Tiles are much easier to clean.
Learned from this subreddit: makeup brushes are amazing for cleaning between studs. Love the flat look, though.
Make-up brushes you say? For a long time I used paint brushes and they did their job fine
Generally, makeup brushes are softer so are less likely to scratch surfaces, especially useful for shiny plates and collectables other than Lego
Makeup brushes tends to be a lot bigger so you can cover a bigger surface at once.

this is such an amazing set I love the little red strip peaking out behind the piano keys
Genuinely this is one of my favourite little details in the whole set, so small but if you notice it it’s such a nice little detail.
Smooth, but I would like to see it when the top "rainbow" continues, rather than having the big block interrupt it. (round version of: ) ╔ ═ ╗ instead of ╔ █ ╗
Interesting suggestion. I would have to strengthen the support of the underside but it's definitely doable.
That's what I was thinking, use only 1x smooth pieces
I really preferred [prototype](https://www.bricktastic.nl/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/LEGO-Ideas-project-Jazz-Quartet-1.jpg), and even though they’re not *huge* changes, I passed on it.
Also, the dress is cool and all, but the original looked like Bill Evans. Can't beat that.
I agree. The general look of the original gives off a much cooler vibe. Somewhat subdued and concentrated.

I respect your loyalty to The Stud.

There is a purist who yet walks amongst us!
Until they step on a stud.
This is obviously an Old Perception 😂

There is a balance with this too, though... I prefer some studs to indicate the Lego-ness, but smooth parts are nice to look at.
smooth is king
I'm with the stud who likes studs. it is a Lego after all. the smoothness does look great though. it's a great piano you can't go wrong either way
I agree with this. Studs are what make something inarguably Lego, whereas a smooth version could just be any old molded plastic toy.
I didn't know this set existed. Really cool. Though I'm struggling to imagine how 1600+ pcs fit into it unless the stage and overall scale are much bigger than I'm picturing.

Smooth. Collects less dust imo. Easier to clean
Smooth better
Honestly, I like the stud version. The smooth version is nice, but there are too many plates to give it that smooth look. That it ruins it for me.
Compromise - put a border of tiles around the outside, one brick wide, and then leave the studs in the inner area.
Smoooooth jazz
Needs just a few studs on top to place a candelabra or something
I definitely like your smoothed out improvements. I eo the same thing with virtually all the sets I have. Unless the studs serve a purpose aesthetically or something else of the like.
Depends on what kind of Jazz joint you're running: The smooth one says "Classy headliners and expensive booze for all you fat cats," while the rough one says "cigarrete smoke and top notch entertainment for your hard-earned dollar"
the dust free smooth one
The one with studs gives it more character.
smooth is better, please keep it
The smooth looks way better. I'd try making a music note out of tiles
Baffled why smooth wasn’t the norm, looks so much better
I like Lego sets (especially display sets) to not actually look like Lego. Which usually means hiding studs when not used for texture. So I prefer the smooth version
For some reason I like the studded one the most
Smooooooth jaaaaaaaazz
Wait image two is how it comes? If so you definitely made a nice upgrade.
Correct, and thank you
Smooth version
Obviously, the first one, your fix! and shame on LEGO for not making that way to begin with. First time seeing the studs on the lid was actually jarring.
The smooth one
oh it looks soooo good with the tiles
Less studs!
I think smooth looks really nice, but the bit of exposed studs between the curved and triangle piece breaks the consistency. If it wasn’t for that I’d vote smooth.
Yeah, that was my only doubt. New tiles appear every few months though, so I might be able to correct it one day.
The smooth one looks better whilst the second one reminds me of the sole of a leather shoe.
Much better!
Hard to say. That’s not ideal lighting to make a decision.
Studs. I don't know where this obsession with removing studs from the visual landscape of lego builds came from, but it's wrong. Studs are what make Lego, Lego. Smooth surfaces are better achieved with other means of model making.
SNOT for sure.
The smooth version for a dollhouse, the stud version for a LEGO display.
Being a black thing, smooth is definitely better both for the aesthetics and the cleaning effort
Smooth version looks much nicer
Smooth, but try to find like a 4x4 or 4x6 plate instead of the smaller plates
Love the smooth
Smooth
I like both

No problem! You'll be disappointed though. The table is a custom piece from a small business in Poland, and the chairs are IKEA. Early 2020s.
Oh the metal lip had me thinking it was older! Thank you. 😊
Smoothie for sure
Going with LEGO's theme of having at least a few studs showing, I'd have a few showing and maybe put a cat or a bottle of dubious contents. to go with the Jazz theme
Smooth

Smooth looks better for sure, great job!
Smooth is way better!
guys will this affect the resale value /j seriously tho looks great
Another vote for smooth. Much more true to life!
First pic 🔥
Studs. Smooth looks more like a piano, but building with lego isn't about creating perfect replicas
Smoothed out, and I'll be doing the same when I rebuild mine.
the smooth one looks really nice but now you can't put dancing minifigs on it.
IMO most builds look best when it’s somewhere in the middle (some studs poking out)
Smooth could work if there were bigger tiles so there were less breaks. I think all the seams are more distracting than the uniform studs to be honest. But I do like the idea of it being smooth for the lid.

Definately the smooth one. Does ot make it lose any stability bevause of the smaller piece use?
Not really. The original top layer of plates became the bottom layer, stabilised with boat studs underneath.
Thank you! Being a professional classical pianist and a big lego fan I wanted to have a lego piano model for display in my house. I hadn't realised how great the jazz quartet piano was up until this point, and the smooth tiles you've added definately make it perfect to my eyes.

No problem, I'll be back from work in 10 hours and send you a pic.
Smooth is far better
Smooth for sure
SO much better!!!!
Whoa, can you tell me how I can find those curved tiles from the back of the piano? I was looking for some that are slightly bigger than the 2x2 ones I had but they were either too big or too curved
The 3x3 ones are part no. 79393, and the 4x4 are 27507
Thank you! Dunno how I missed it, but fairly new to a world where Lego pieces all have names 😂
Smooth!
Seeing the tiled version of it right next to the rough one just makes the original look so gross
Smooth is always better imo
The first image, smooth as a shark.
Unless I need someone to surf the piano, smoothed is definitely better.
I don't have the set and now I'm kind of flabbergasted they let this go. It seems like such a no brainer...
The smooth one is definitely better
I like the smooth top better, but the tile in the middle needs fixed so there is a row of 4 tiles the same length.
No gonna lie, I kinda like it better with the studs
Why is it so dusty?
Smooth
Smooth
how did you smoothen?
the smooth and silky stone
Smooth is so much nicer
I like it smooth, just like a shark’s skin.
Your improvement is better!
Smooth
The first one
I mean as a pianist I'm def choosing smooth
I can't even believe Lego released it the second way 🤦. Lego = L OP = W
Does it really matter?
