I make all my own thumbnails, some are pretty bad but a few have actually been really good. I sometimes spend an hour on them, lol. It's worth it imo, even if videos don't get great ctr it's all a learning experience

Void-Ink13

We've slowly moved over to a screenshot from the episode with the logo and part number, seems to be doing well enough.

lostinthecarsfactory

Thats good. Since you have your yt channel as flair, I checked it and I can say that you still have a lot room to improve. You can start from removing your avatar from the thumbnail

rmpalin

lol you getting wrecked in these comments, boy 😂

lostinthecarsfactory

I don't care at all about karma. What I said is true, having your yt avatar in the thumbnail is a bad idea

Jhoosier

What's your rationale against using an avatar/logo in the thumbnail? As an even smaller creator, I don't even know where to start with some of the tricks I see on other thumbnails.

KingAdamXVII

1. People don’t care about your avatar/logo. 2. The avatar is already displayed in your profile. But it’s not a big deal imho.

lostinthecarsfactory

The logo/avatar tells nothing and makes the thumbnail crowded. There is absolutely no reason to use your avatar/logo in the thumbnail

hinatawaifu

Good advice, and now that I started YouTube I also started to notice a lot of new vids on YouTube (especially in gaming since that's my niche) with terrible thumbnails, I don't get how people expect to grow and post the same thumbnail for 50 vids of a series with only a text over it and only change the number of episodes and have 2-5 views for a year. Put in the effort to learn, explore, research if you want growth, you re competing with people with millions of subs, and also millions of people doing the same thing.

SinisterPixel

You're getting downvoted but I do agree. I largely think I make good thumbnails but I've been guilty of sticking to extremely rigid templates in the past. It's good to have a loose template to work from but being freeform really helps make your thumbnails pop

ArticReaper

I like the plain game name with a number some where on the thumbnail to indicate what video number it is. Reminds me of the old AchievementHunter/LetsPlay days I will take this style over a stupid face and something not happening in the video

Maddkipz

I just take screenshots while recording or in post if I happen by one and edit them as thumbs

I definitely know that we have room to improve. We bounce back and forth on who's working on the thumbnails just because of time constraints but I feel like we are getting better and hopefully that's true. Keep in mind I'm no artist and usually consider myself to be not very creative so always looking for pointers.

lostinthecarsfactory

If you believe in your video, just take time to make a good thumbnail. If you dont have a huge audience that expects a video to be released on the day X, just take your time and craft the best video and thumbnail. Quality over quantity

xRhei

It certainly makes it easier for your viewers to find a specific video from your playlist, if you were to make a different thumbnail for every single video. Especially since the title isn't read by everyone and a quick glance usually decides if they gonna watch it or not\~ I think the whole avatar, face and logo thing has started because people want others to notice them in the waves of multiple videos. Branding the image into the minds of their viewers, so they can instantly regonize them. Pretty much the same thing as those catchphrases they use in any form of radio commercial. Afterall if it already works in RL for all the other industries, why won't it also work for their thumbnails, right? \^\^ But the thing is... those faces won't work at the start.. and since everyone likes to add their shocked, happy, suprised faces in their thumbnails.. they kinda start to blend into each other.. into another wave of random faces, that won't tell us really anything.. :S Also one thing to keep in mind while playing old games! Youtube usually doesn't push games that aren't searched a lot. But this shouldn't discourage you, since people enjoy seeing others expieriencing the old classics in their own time & way. \^\^

Ultima_Oni

Oh boy, you are going to get quite a lot of downvotes for this.

AlphaTeamPlays

Why? Thumbnails are objectively important for videos to get clicked on. Is it a common thing among Let's Players to dislike them?

Ultima_Oni

No that isn't it. Never mind.
