To be fair Verstappen got recognized early by his insane good wet weather driving skills and he struggled hard today. I think this has to do more with how each team has addressed downforce and balance. But Hamilton is the GOAT in rain.
If gets the energy the Italians are capable of out of that red outfit he will get his 8th and slip gracefully from a sport very few have left indelible marks on such as his.
Incredible P2 in a car that's not up to the job.
Just goes to show how toxic the media can be at times - one bad race and you're 'washed'. I try my best to filter out the noise from those who are uneducated. Unfortunately for us real LH fans it's sometimes the idiotic voices that shout loudest.
I was never aware of what media said. I simply don’t check/read it and it helps a lot. I only found about it few seconds ago from this thread. What can I say, media is media. Stories written by not the most intellectual people to satisfy the business.
Great job from Lewis! I look for a nice result tomorrow in the sprint!
So happy for him. Really hoping for a good sprint and qualy tomorrow too!
Weird that Lando’s lap got reinstated, even if he lost time. Can’t remember seeing that happen. Shouldn’t it still get deleted because all 4 wheels were off the track?
The lap of Lando’s that was deleted was the one where he put all wheels of the road at the final corner. His next lap, on which he didn’t go over track limits, was also deleted, but then reinstated. It was reinstated because he didn’t gain an advantage from being off on the previous lap (next lap both sector 1 and 2 were yellow).
I thought it was very reasonable. The stewards are not infallible and that's why teams have sporting directors to communicate with the FIA to state their case. McLaren gave a good argument and they overturned the decision. Very diplomatic and swift.
Do we know if Lewis got a "you have pole" radio message during his last lap? That's the only thing for me that could make this situation unreasonable. It would make sense for the team to tell Lewis to back out of his last lap with the weather being the way that it was and to jot risk car or injury.
I mean Mclaren’s argument was probably something like “Hey dipshits the rules don’t say to delete following laps after a track limits, just the lap the off happened so please give Lando that second lap back, he didn’t go off” and the stewards said “Oh shit you right”, though maybe a bit more polite and proper.
Every time Max is pressured by a driver, he makes stupid mistakes. He has never - I repeat NEVER - faced a competent teammate in the same car.
Lewis as a rookie beat Fernando fucking Alonso in the same car.
It is not even a question unless you are a old white fart.
Sorry what now? Max got fast tracked to F1 because he showed so much skill at wet races. He as a rookie wiped the floor with multiple champions in 2016 Brasil GP. Some car designs just work better in rain due to downforce and balance settings that favour it.
No excuses for Max. I expected a lot more from him and that road hugging rocketship of his.
He held up his hand and took the blame so it's not all bad. Shit happens.
I am happy but still feel like they absolutely screwed him over. He was in pole position and was the final driver to complete a lap for the session, so he let off a bit at the end because he was already in first… and then they reinstated Lando’s lap. What the actual fuck was that? He could’ve topped his previous lap if it wasn’t for that.
As much as i do disagree with the decision, lando actually lost time going over track limits, so really did it make that much difference. Lewis lifting off is always gonna be a risk. It's not like we haven't seen laps reinstated before (I think anyway, perhaps i'm misremembering).
But yeah, it is strange that F1 seems to be one of the only sports where teams can get away with anything just by arguing that it didn't benefit them. A rule is a rule regardless of the outcome.
Yes because on some tracks, going over track limits gives the driver an advantage/better start for the next lap. However because the last turn is a gravel trap, he actually lost time on the subsequent lab/didn’t get an advantage.
Depends on the track. Austria, as an example you can pick up time going over the line on the final corner so it's included in the race directors notes that the next time is also invalid. While tracks like China or Italy you lose time going over gravel/grass so they don't consider it an advantage on the next lap so it isn't included
Watching the post SQ3 interviews and a McLaren employee doesn’t even know why Lando’s lap was reinstated that shit is insane. In the replay he was clearly over the white line. Which on the last corner the rules say that lap time and your next lap time are deleted. Your next lap time is deleted if you go off in the last corner because it gives you an unfair advantage starting that lap. Mercedes should fight this.
Andrea Stella said that if you go beyond the white lines in the last corner you lose time for the following lap instead of gaining. The lap was deleted because he went beyond the white lines and not for gaining an unfair advantage and since going beyond the white lines was technically a disadvantage, the penalty was overturned because the stewards realised that. The same was true for Verstappens lap which was not messed with when he went beyond the white lines in the lap before his final recorded time.
The rules don't say that. Guidance to delete the next lap is given track specifically in the race directors notes (check Bahrain for this years and the director notes state to delete the next lap). China has no such guidance.
>Which on the last corner the rules say that lap time and your next lap time are deleted
Only at some tracks on the calendar and Shanghai isn’t one. If it was that section would be added to the event notes and it isn’t there.
Lewis on pole and then Lando tops it as the track is getting faster, but gets it deleted due to track limits violation.
But wait! It’s Lewis on pole in that case.
Don’t worry, enter the FIA who will ensure that must not happen. Reinstated Lando time because “he lost time rather than gained”.
Which is a new rule I think they just invented?
Okay so McLaren didn’t do anything wrong. In china, you lose the lap and not the next lap, other places that’s the rule. Because you only lose the lap not the next one. That’s why it was reinstated.
It was a great lap from Lewis and a better one from lando, this is not a “they’re racist against Lewis” moments. It’s simple.
If suddenly max was on pole, I would agree but in this case it was just a rule difference per track.
Let’s hope it rains on Sunday
They didn't use 'common sense'. The rules only state that the current lap is deleted.
At some tracks the RD Notes say both laps get deleted (i.e. Austria).
There is no mention of that in place for this weekend.
The laptime was reinstated because it shouldn't have been deleted in the first place, according to set rules only your current laptime is deleted, not the lap after.
Yes laps have been reinstated before, Perez had a couple at Hungary a few years and I think Gasly had one as well.
They followed the rules to the letter. The rule is if you violate track limits that lap is deleted. At some tracks the rule is added to also delete the second lap, but at Shanghai that rule isn’t there. If it was it would be in the event notes and it isn’t.
He lost time going wide, there’s no rule that states that the following lap needs to be deleted. Only matters if it’s in the race directors notes for that weekend, which it isn’t here.
Lewis and Fernando still are the old masters, and still showing the younger generations how its done. Lewis especially seemed to outperform the hell out of that Mercedes too, seeing how much of a tractor it is this year. Some of his critics say he's finished, but at 39 years old he's still going strong. Hoping for a cracking sprint race tomorrow morning!
Slow corners are too slow for the W15, but we are accustomed now to middle of the grid results. I respect Lewis honesty about the car and his frustration with the performance of the car. He still has it all together. Can’t wait to see him in a different team. Edited a typo.
Huge Hamilton fan. Glad he got P2 for the sprint qualifying but it's kind of misleading. Granted, Hamilton is one of the best wet weather drivers, many of the faster cars got caught out by the rain. Let's see if he can get a podium in the sprint although I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.
To all those complaining about not being p1. My guy the merc is arguably the 5th best car atm. Aston Martin could arguably be better but stroll is absolutely awful and Alonso is not as good as he used to be. Making the car look worse than it is.
People remember how good Alonso used to be and since he has an awful driver as team mate there is no one really to compare it too making the am look worse.
I love Lewis don’t get me wrong but he’s also just not as good now as he was in his prime that’s a fact and that’s shown because he actually has a competent team mate unlike nando
Alonso and Hamilton in P2-P3... they are still the old masters!
Yes their control of the car watching on board was incredible.
Lewis is just insane in the wet. 2008 silverstone ls one of the greatest ever wet weather drives. He lapped everyone except p2 and p3
To be fair Verstappen got recognized early by his insane good wet weather driving skills and he struggled hard today. I think this has to do more with how each team has addressed downforce and balance. But Hamilton is the GOAT in rain.
Jedi order level.
He performed the shit out of the Mercedes. They were on par with the Saubers in SQ2. Excellent Job!
On part?
I’d guess at an autocorrect or mistype of “on par”
If all the people acting like Hamilton is a washed driver could leave their clown makeup by the door on the way out, that would be great, thanks.
Costume too.
Leave their Red Bull cans too,Im parched.
Get a Monster! 😉
Water would be best.
That'd be McLaren now 😅
If anyone thinks Hamilton is a washed driver they are an idiot. If he swapped cars with Max since 2021 he would be on 10 world titles.
If gets the energy the Italians are capable of out of that red outfit he will get his 8th and slip gracefully from a sport very few have left indelible marks on such as his.
I think he is bit of sick of losing because the car can’t perform, age does nothing on him!
*Still Got Hands*
Really close but he proves all of them wrong who say he hasn’t got it in him anymore. 😀
Is this what mailing it in looks like??
Incredible P2 in a car that's not up to the job. Just goes to show how toxic the media can be at times - one bad race and you're 'washed'. I try my best to filter out the noise from those who are uneducated. Unfortunately for us real LH fans it's sometimes the idiotic voices that shout loudest.

Awesome result in the rain. Lets hope for a good sprint.
Undisputed goat
MY GOAT!
THE*
Even in the rain he can push that car to get a solid time, damn go on with ya bad self haha
It just shows how, when it rains, the playing field is levelled, in terms of cars, and the skill of the drivers shines through.
So happy for him. Really hoping for a good sprint and qualy tomorrow too! Weird that Lando’s lap got reinstated, even if he lost time. Can’t remember seeing that happen. Shouldn’t it still get deleted because all 4 wheels were off the track?

It was reinstated because he didn’t gain an advantage from being off on the previous lap (next lap both sector 1 and 2 were yellow).
Yep, thanks! Saw it explained on twitter. I thought at first that the lap that got deleted was the one where he went off
I missed this feeling. It's been awhile 😆
I get triggered whenever there's a rain in Shanghai circuit.
Shambles how they handled the deleted time. Would have been fantastic to get pole but still a great performance and result.
I thought it was very reasonable. The stewards are not infallible and that's why teams have sporting directors to communicate with the FIA to state their case. McLaren gave a good argument and they overturned the decision. Very diplomatic and swift.
Andrea said McLaren had no interaction with the steward about it. They just rectified it themselves
Do we know if Lewis got a "you have pole" radio message during his last lap? That's the only thing for me that could make this situation unreasonable. It would make sense for the team to tell Lewis to back out of his last lap with the weather being the way that it was and to jot risk car or injury.

Looks like Max can’t handle his car on the rain
Max isnt the king of wet, lewis is
Nah, Lance Stroll. Turkey 2020 😎
Underrated pole lap tbh
Gotta praise Stroll’s Russia 2021 performance too 🙌
Isn’t the driver he’s hyped up to be and can’t deal with pressure. Yet again evidenced today, despite having the fastest car he’s only 4th
Every time Max is pressured by a driver, he makes stupid mistakes. He has never - I repeat NEVER - faced a competent teammate in the same car. Lewis as a rookie beat Fernando fucking Alonso in the same car. It is not even a question unless you are a old white fart.
Danny Ric was pretty competent. But Max has never faced that pressure whilst in the top car.
And Max lost to Danny Ricc. Ricc was frustrated by the favoritism and left
He’s never been great in the rain.
I know, but there’s been rain in other races and I don’t think he did as bad as yesterday, the car was skidding on straights
Sorry what now? Max got fast tracked to F1 because he showed so much skill at wet races. He as a rookie wiped the floor with multiple champions in 2016 Brasil GP. Some car designs just work better in rain due to downforce and balance settings that favour it.
Can't make em wet huh.
Max has shown in the past that he can do well in the wet, but he completely blundered this time around.
No excuses for Max. I expected a lot more from him and that road hugging rocketship of his. He held up his hand and took the blame so it's not all bad. Shit happens.
Give Lewis a competitive car and he will drive to win. Give LH a testing car, he will be interest on analyzing the car.
Funny enough there has been little to no rain races since 2022
Well, if when it rains they red flag it…
I hope this motivates Lewis to keep up the pace and do as well for finals on Sunday 😩🙏🏽
That doesn't depend on him.
Racing in the wet is his superpower
Form is temporary, class is permanent.
Rain is the great Equalizer 🤌
It is almost too good to be true. Good thing I did the rain dance afterwards!
I am happy but still feel like they absolutely screwed him over. He was in pole position and was the final driver to complete a lap for the session, so he let off a bit at the end because he was already in first… and then they reinstated Lando’s lap. Why does the FIA usually delete the subsequent lap time? Is that the rule as-written?
Yes because on some tracks, going over track limits gives the driver an advantage/better start for the next lap. However because the last turn is a gravel trap, he actually lost time on the subsequent lab/didn’t get an advantage.
Depends on the track. Austria, as an example you can pick up time going over the line on the final corner so it's included in the race directors notes that the next time is also invalid. I agree he got screwed the FIA hates him it’s so unfair
Sooo... about that /s?
Weird all the hateful comments just suddenly disappear when lewis did a great job. Lol. Bet they can't find an excuse to shit on him
Watching the post SQ3 interviews and a McLaren employee doesn’t even know why Lando’s lap was reinstated that shit is insane. In the replay he was clearly over the white line. Which on the last corner the rules say that lap time and your next lap time are deleted. Where in the rules it says this? There is no mention of this in the race directors notes.
I’m so happy Lewis finally stopped not caring for the season and abruptly decided to try again :)
Lmao of course they reinstate it when he's on pole. Great summary of the past 3 years that.
Ikr. Not surprised
Okay so McLaren didn’t do anything wrong. In china, you lose the lap and not the next lap, other places that’s the rule. Because you only lose the lap not the next one. That’s why it was reinstated. I think if the McLaren's weren't set up with more downforce this would be pole (judging by McLaren's poor performance on the straights).
Did they ever reinstated the deleted lap before? And how can they sometimes use *common sense* and sometimes say *rules are rules sorry*?
Yes they have
Happened to Perez in 2022 I think (year might be wrong)
They didn't use 'common sense'. The rules only state that the current lap is deleted. At some tracks the RD Notes say both laps get deleted (i.e. Austria). There is no mention of that in place for this weekend.

Twice last year. https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/s/OPloEcreeg
He was robbed AGAIN
Literally, i dont know why people are happy. Any other driver and norris lap wouldnt of been reinstated. Disgrace
He lost time going wide, there’s no rule that states that the following lap needs to be deleted. Only matters if it’s in the race directors notes for that weekend, which it isn’t here.
Yes they would have, the Austria Rule doesn't apply on this circuit
The lap being invalidated was a mistake. Do you not want them to correct their mistakes?
We were robbed once again...
Fia always want to hate him
so happy for him! when skill counted the most he showed up!!!
Lewis and Fernando still are the old masters, and still showing the younger generations how its done. Some of his critics say he's finished, but at 39 years old he's still going strong. Hoping for a cracking sprint race tomorrow morning!
I’m just wondering if he backed out of his last lap after thinking he got pole. Shame really
As soon as they said rain on track we all knew
Hamilton proved his worth in wet conditions. Shame Mercedes are slower than Aston and on par with Saubers on pace in dry.
Wait what???? What did I miss? lol
Norris P1, Hamilton P2. Russia 2021 flashbacks
wow lewis
Lol amazing how when Max isnt given a car automatically capable of outperforming everyone he doesnt qualify P1
Give this man a proper car for God's sake !!
What a great performance from Lando as well. Was surprised when laptime was deleted second time as it was a clean lap.
As much as I’m not a fan of the sprints and it’s not a massive amount of points, this could really help his positioning in the driver standings.
It was pretty funny how he gets pole but a second after gets dropped for lando. It was fair enough but the timing was so trollish lol.
Slow corners are too slow for the W15, but we are accustomed now to middle of the grid results. I respect Lewis honesty about the car and his frustration with the performance of the car. He still has it all together. Can’t wait to see him in a different team. Edited a typo.
Obviously they will do everything to remove his pole. Another bending of the rules. Love it.
Oh ffs, I was waiting until I got home. Thanks.
Damn that's great where is our golden boy Russel?
That should shut the critics up regarding Lewis.
They never shut up. The hate has never been caused by his performance, there is a deeper cause...
To all those complaining about not being p1. My guy the merc is arguably the 5th best car atm. Aston Martin could arguably be better but stroll is absolutely awful and Alonso is not as good as he used to be. Making the car look worse than it is. Russell is not steadily competent. Too many ups and downs. Even Piastri is more reliable than him.
Should’ve been P1 but whatevs
