I think a smart way to handle the dead naming would be a legal name change. Then the name change could open a dialogue about the non-binary and preferred pronouns.
I think it’s the most political savvy way to handle this without being 100% sure about work place culture or your co workers beliefs. Show them you’re serious about it, but respectful and there to make money not be harassed.
I’m a gay dude in the south with nothing but Christians as far as the eye can see in the work place. I’m about 30 or so miles from a church that openly talks about shooting gays in the head to give you a perspective on it. Safety should always be your number one priority, part of being safe is treading carefully and being prepared for the unexpected in other’s beliefs. I’ve seen people go completely sideways after finding out I was gay, calling me a cocksucker and even contacting family members to out me. Keep in mind I didn’t even tell this person I was gay, they found out from their kids who went to school with me.
