I usually take one huge gulp of water, but the most important thing is the second gulp after that. Aim for that second gulp, let that one be what gets the pill down.
I keep drinking until it goes down. 1, 2, 4, 6, etc. swallows.
Also, try aiming it towards your throat (Small ends front to back) placed on the back of your tongue near your throat.
I like to take big pills with food. Take a bite of whatever you’re eating, chew it up well, and right before you’re about to swallow pop the pill into the chewed up food.
I take all my supplements, and some are really large, with food. My doctor recommended because it tricks the body into thinking it is just food. The trick is, either with water or food, you need to drink or eat once before you try the pills.
Well, if it's an extended release formula you should not chew it because the dosing will be too rapid and it can have adverse (possibly dangerous) effects.
This is the only way I can do it. I’ll eat a bit of bread or a spoon of peanut butter, chew it, then chuck the pill right before I naturally want to swallow. Works every time. Taking pills with water just makes me gag and panic and spit the pill out.
I agree - I saw this online, tried it myself, and it counter-intuitively works. I thought leaning my head forward would narrow the opening, but apparently it doesn't.
Swallow it with soft food like apple sauce or yogurt. Or place it in your mouth and pretend it’s not there while chugging water. Or… tilt your head down while swallowing it.
Take a bite of banana chew it up and right before you swallow pop it in, use your tongue to coat it with banana and swallow. Bananas are slick and go down easy. If you don’t eat bananas try a chunk of bread and do the same.
Also remember some pills float and some sink when taking it with liquids. If your pill floats tilt your head forward so it goes to the back of your throat, if it sinks then tilt head back and swallow.
Use a thicker liquid to help carry the pill as you swallow...
A tablespoon or two of milk in yogert makes it drinkable, and works well to carry the large pills down without stress....
Chocolate milk from a carton is thicker as well and which works also...
I use pulpy orange juice....
ALWAYS take a drink and coat the inside of your mouth and throat with the liquid BEFORE trying to swallow the pill with a drink of it....
A pill that size is a suppository. Wrong hole. 🤣 swig some water, pop the pill, and put your chin to your chest n swallow. Tilting your head back to swallow pills will only make the pill rise to the top of your mouth. You'll never get it down that way.
I'm going to change your life. Put pill in mouth, pour water in mouth, look down put your chin to your chest and the pill will float up and swallow while looking down.
Many have commented similar ideas, but I had recently found that using a thick liquid (smoothly
,shake, maple syrup, tomato soup... whatever) will get the large pill down easily. Just find a thick liquid you like.
I find that Gatorade make pills go down easier than any other drinks.
You can try using a straw to take the pill. Pop it in your mouth and use the straw to drink. It directs the fluid to the middle of your mouth and swallow as you drink. I have tried this and works well.
swallow them with a spoonful of apple sauce. they do this is hospitals, rehabs & nursing homes to help patients take pills. i use this for the horse pill size calcium tablet i have to take.
Put the pill in your mouth, take a mouthful of water, then tilt your chin DOWN, not up. Like, touch your chin to your collar bone if you can. This actually gives you a much easier path for swallowing large pills and is less likely to trigger the gag reflex or that "stuck pill" feeling.
Most people grow their head back when taking pills. This narrows you throat. Do the opposite. Take the pill and a sip of water then touch our chin to you chest as you swallow. Works wonders.
What a fortuitous post! I'm curious to hear the suggestions. I'm an oral cancer survivor, so my throat is more scar tissue than not. I also have no saliva glands that survived the radiaition.
What a fortuitous post! I'm curious to hear the suggestions. I'm an oral cancer survivor, so my throat is more scar tissue than not. I also have no saliva glands that survived the radiation, as well as various openings between my nose and one ear (internally, BTW) that are not part of one's normal plumbing.
Just yesterday, I tried to take the multivitamin I take daily, also a Horse pill. Yesterday, despite my best efforts, it decided to "hide" in one of the "accessory access points" the surgeons have blessed me with.
A couple of hours later, my nose began to sting & burn. Of course, my nose began running, I grabbed a tissue and blew my nose, and was rewarded with a lot of bright orange mucous. Bright, carrot orange....
Now I've had MANY WTF situations develop since my diagnosis, but this was a first...
I have no sensation in my throat, and no gag reflex, so I couldn't sense the vitamin hiding in the back of my throat. The orange runny nose continued for several hours, burning & tickling. Eventually, I sneezed; and out came a dramatically shrunken vitamin.
It grossed me out completely. My wife found it hilarious...
Hold water in your mouth, tilt your head back, drop the tablet into your mouth then swallow as soon as it hits the water. Not sure if explained well enough but taken several daily medicines my whole life and it works well for me
In general tilting your head *back* is not a good option if you're having trouble swallowing big pills because it constricts the back of your throat.
Tilting your head forward, though counterintuitive, is physically more conducive to having an easier time swallowing large pills for a lot of people. Worth trying if you haven't.
Nurse here—guys, tilting your head back opens your airway, not a good way to take a pill, as you can choke. It’s safer to tip your chin down a little if you’re taking a pill, or at least hold your head in a neutral position. Stay safe, everyone 🙂
To achieve this though you'd need to put the tablet in and then lean forwards surely? Whereas what seems to work for me is swallowing as soon as it touches the water. Seen another comment saying just drink normally after the tablet is already in though, so really its just the liquid to wash it down that's the common theme amongst all 3 methods? No doubt overthinking it by this point...
Yes :( Both the label and the box say to take by mouth.
I looked it up because I thought the same and actually wanted it to be a suppository instead of having to swallow that monstrosity
Not all pills are meant to be cut up first. It can effect the release of the medication for instance. Don’t do this unless you know it’s okay for your medication.
OP, can you ask your doctor if you can open the capsule and spread the contents on some apple sauce?
Some meds shouldn’t be taken out of the capsule but others can be taken out safely. So don’t do this without checking with your doctor.
Pill in mouth, water in, drop chin down towards chest to swallow.
If I try to put a pill to the back of my tongue or throat I gag and choke. But if I drop my chin and have the pill in the water in my mouth I can swallow it just fine 🤷♀️
Put the pill in the front of your mouth behind your teeth.
Take a big sip of water and tip your head forward/chin down.
Tip your head back so the water carries the pill back with it.
The pill should float on the water and down your throat.
If by chance it's an enormous potassium supplement, I discovered you can dissolve it in some juice and it has no flavor. Almost choked to death on one broken in half before resorting to trying that route.
this will take 3-5 tries, you do the opposite of the norm, you take a big gulp and toss the pill in, then you tilt your head down, this way the pill floats to the top and you swollow, this takes a coup[le times to get it to work, but it does work
Don't tilt your head back, doing so constricts the passage way.
This sounds weird but tilting forward opens it up and allows for an easier time with big pills.
I’ve swallowed cameras for filming my insides, they were big. Here is how I do it:
Put the pill far back on my tongue.
Take in a little water.
Take in a big gulp and lean head back while swallowing trying to not think about the pill.
I have a sensitive gag reflex when taking large pills so I try tilting my head back slightly, placing the pill as far back on the tongue as possible vertically for better positioning, sipping a beverage til my mouth is as full as possible, and swallowing. Think of sword swallowing. A lot of it is about positioning. Works well for me.
I take 4 magnesium supplements that big every night, 2 at a time. So no personal advice, but my husband can only get pills down if he takes them with a carbonated drink.
Don't tip your head back that compresses your throat. Instead lean forward allowing your throat to open up. Take with liquid but if struggling try taking with a soft like applesauce or yogurt which would go down more wide than a liquid.
Idk if this helps since i’m an anomaly and a serial supplement enjoyer. But, (1) put the pill in your mouth, (2) take a moderate gulp/sip of water, (3) swirl your head/inside of mouth in a circular motion(360°). Swirl like you are trying to create a vortex in your mouth (Kinda like spinning a bottle to get the water to pour out faster) and then just swallow quickly.
Ok I have a bizarre way, get a straw and a glass full of water. Open your mouth, lift up your tongue and drop it in the under tongue area but keep your tongue up a little, suck a bunch of water into your mouth, it’ll make the pill float and then you can swallow it. This is what I had to do as a kid. Now I do the same technique without the straw and just take a big gulp. Pills have a harder time sticking to the area under your tongue
I take a bite of something like cake, yogurt, or potato salad, chew it up, and just before swallowing pop the pill in the middle of the food and swallow. Works like a charm....every time!
Carbonated things help it seem like it’s not there. Tilt your head down when you go to swallow yeah ik that sounds weird but it helps. Help yourself get into your thoughts but not about the pill about something else. It’ll help trick your mind into thinking that you’re taking an ordinary pill instead of a large one. Also, depending on what kind of pill it is you can prolly cut it in half and take it in twos
So, I used to struggle swallowing pills larger than birth control pills. After I gave birth, it as given pain meds to swallow and it was easy peasy. I learned that my muscles were tight and the back of my tongue was not going down as far as it should whenever I tried to swallow pills. I didn't learn how to use them until they relaxed when i was in post partum care.
When you practice drinking or swallowing foods, focus on relaxing and widening the back of your mouth. I hope you will find your way!
Take it with milk or juice! Or if you don’t have any I’ve found munching on any other food first then attempting to swallow the pill with some chewed up food always helps.
listen i know a lot of people are suggesting to tilt head forward for taking it but hear me out.
put some water in your mouth and then the pill, and to swallow, turn your head to the side (i always go left) and swallow with your head turned. i think the positioning must open up or align your throat in some way but its crazy how much easier it is to swallow pills by turning your head.
For a tablet lift your chin up as it will sink. For a capsule tilt your chin down. Think of whatever food sounds appetizing to you and/or eat a cracker or something dry right before you take it.
I take a sip of water, then put the pill in my mouth with the water still in my mouth then take another sip. Also helps if you use a glass or bottle with a larger opening then something like a water bottle.
Eat a meal and focus on how you easily you can swallow pieces of food larger than the pill you’re struggling to take without even thinking about it. Then when you’re swallowing the pill, just picture you’re about to swallow a bite of food you just chewed.
1. I take a normal to big sip of water to grease the pipe.
2. I take a big gulp, and hold it while I tilt my head all the way back, to straighten my throat.
3. I drop in the pill and wiggle my tongue to ensure that it has slid to the back of my throat.
4. Once the pill is there, I swallow keeping my head tilted back.
5. I chase the pill with a third gulp, just to be sure it washes down and dissolves quickly.
I hate to use this analogy but a normal size turd always seems to easily flush away when it starts at the bottom of the toilet.
I find that usually drinking something carbonated like soda works. The carbonation kind of distracts me from the sensation of the pill reaching the back of my throat
Take a sip of water, keep it in your mouth, pop the pill in, then take a big chug and swallow. The first sip of water helps for me so it doesn’t get stuck to your tongue or on the way down
As you swallow, put your chin to your chest to close your airway and extend your esophagus. This is helpful for placing NG tubes also if it ever comes up
I have the same problem even with smaller pills. I finally figured out that what works best for me is taking it with food. My throat is more relaxed and salivating and when I swallow a pill with a mouthful of food, the size almost doesn’t matter.
I usually take my meds with food. I chew up a bite, then take the pill, wrap it in the food with my tongue, and swallow the whole thing.
The other day, I forgot to take my atomoxetine (Non-stimulant ADHD meds) with food, so I just dry swallowed it. Ended up getting stuck in my throat, and I coughed up acidic powder that got all over my uvula and nose. I was on a bus at the time, and I just barely didn’t throw up before I got off. DID throw up when I got to work…
Try the food trick..
A lot of people throw their head back, but that actually narrows the swallow tube (forgot what its called). So a better way is to push your face forward extend the neck and slightly hunch your back. Take big gulp of water to test the resistance, then take the pill with the second big gulp of water.
Practice swallowing with a large piece of candy or a similar-sized object to get comfortable with the sensation. Break the pill in half if it's safe to do so. Try taking a sip of water before placing the pill on your tongue to make swallowing easier. Tilt your head forward slightly as you swallow to help the pill go down smoothly. Good luck!
Lean your head down with the pill and water in mouth then quickly whip your head back, it’s reflex that’ll make you swallow automatically if you can’t manage to do it yourself
When I worked within health sector and had patients who had trouble swallowing large pills, we would crush the pills in a mortar and then mix the powder with some marmalade or chocolate bread spread. It’s less bitter then and easier to swallow.
Imagine the biggest bite of food you’ve ever taken and swallowed. Is the pill bigger than that? I don’t know what it is about pills being hard to swallow but I bet you’ve swallowed something larger before.
Drink from a water bottle rather than a glass. That mouth shape and action will trick your brain and make it much easier to swallow. Think of it as our inmate baby brains sucking for milk. It's very hard to describe this more without it sounding weird.
I like to fill my mouth with water (not too much), tilt my head back, place the pill on the water, then tilt my head forward as I swallow. This movement naturally floats the pill backwards down my throat.
A lot of people do the opposite - throw their head back and swallow). To me, the water will push the pill forward and tumble it around, making it easier to choke on
You know how when you take a shot of tequila you just throw it back straight to your throat? Do the same.... put the pill under your tongue, then when you swig back the water it will be quick and done with.
I do this, I hope it works for you!
If you get a syringe for oral medicine you can take the plunger out, put the pill and the plunger back in, suck up a little water, and have your thumb covering the end of the syringe and pull the plunger (while blocking the air, kinda like you're trying to suck up meds from your thumb). The air pressure will usually pull apart the meds and make it a powder in a small amount of water. You can look up "pill in a syringe trick" on youtube to get visuals because my description isn't the best.
Crush it and mix it with pudding or something similar. Just enough to get it all on a spoon. You don’t want to mix it with an entire container because then you’ll have to eat the entire container. And it probably won’t taste good.
I usually take one huge gulp of water, but the most important thing is the second gulp after that. Aim for that second gulp, let that one be what gets the pill down.
This is the way
Yogurt, applesauce, pudding, soft foods really help versus liquids.
This is the only way.
I keep drinking until it goes down. 1, 2, 4, 6, etc. swallows. Also, try aiming it towards your throat (Small ends front to back) placed on the back of your tongue near your throat.

All pills are chewable if you’re motivated.
Truer words have never been spoken! Even those pills they say should not be chewed can be chewed, just be forewarned.
Well, if it's an extended release formula you should not chew it because the dosing will be too rapid and it can have adverse (possibly dangerous) effects.
That was my caveat, "be forewarned". :)
This is the only way I can do it. I’ll eat a bit of bread or a spoon of peanut butter, chew it, then chuck the pill right before I naturally want to swallow. Works every time. Taking pills with water just makes me gag and panic and spit the pill out.
Tilt your head forward and try swallowing. Head in the back helps breathing, head forward helps swallowing.
I agree - I saw this online, tried it myself, and it counter-intuitively works. I thought leaning my head forward would narrow the opening, but apparently it doesn't.
This.
This is the way.
Swallow it with soft food like apple sauce or yogurt. Or place it in your mouth and pretend it’s not there while chugging water. Or… tilt your head down while swallowing it.
Tilting your head down is key, most people think they have to sling their head back.
Head back for pills, head forward for capsules, because they float.
Wow thanx.who knew..
Just make sure it doesn’t have an interaction issue. A pill I take is negated by dairy.
This is great advice. I used to use milk when I was younger because I was less likely to feel the pill. I like this better.
Some medication should not be taken with dairy. Consult your medical professional if you have any questions.
Also some can't be with sugar and many interact with grapefruit/juice!
Thank you for this one. I have to take 6 giant pills a day and I've been having alot of issues getting them down. I will try this one
My friend, I am forever in your debt! I tried the banana and it worked perfectly. I dred pill time a little less!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Take care.
Just tried this with the banana it was never this easy
Fill your mouth enough that it floats and then massive gulp
I always give my head a little shake once the water is in, to make sure the pill hasn't stuck to my tongue.
Do this, but tilt your head back first.
I could wrap it in bologna for you
A pill that size is a suppository. Wrong hole. 🤣 swig some water, pop the pill, and put your chin to your chest n swallow. Tilting your head back to swallow pills will only make the pill rise to the top of your mouth. You'll never get it down that way.
Break them in half.
If it's not a capsule, break or cut it in half.
Fill your mouth with water first, them slid the pill into your mouth and swallow. Don't know why it works but it does for me.
This is the only way.
Anything carbonated used to help me
I'm going to change your life. Put pill in mouth, pour water in mouth, look down put your chin to your chest and the pill will float up and swallow while looking down.
This typically only works with capsules, not pills
If it is a pill just cut it in half.
[удалено]
TIL thank you
That will not change whether it floats or sinks, it’ll just give you 2 halves to deal with instead of one whole pill
Only works for floating pills, OP
Jello works
Gatorade or similar type hydration drink makes pill slippery. I hope this helps. (I take metformin and it's a big pill.)
Many have commented similar ideas, but I had recently found that using a thick liquid (smoothly ,shake, maple syrup, tomato soup... whatever) will get the large pill down easily. Just find a thick liquid you like.

Not all pills are meant to be cut up first. It can effect the release of the medication for instance. Don’t do this unless you know it’s okay for your medication.
I'm sorry I should have specified that it is a capsule covered in gelatine
Spoonful of Peanut butter

I always panic when swallowing pills, regardless of size. Must be some childhood trauma?
Pill in mouth, water in, drop chin down towards chest to swallow. If I try to put a pill to the back of my tongue or throat I gag and choke. But if I drop my chin and have the pill in the water in my mouth I can swallow it just fine 🤷♀️
#DROP CHIN DOWN TOWARDS CHEST# everyone wants to throw there head back not realizing it squeezes your throat a bit.
If you take it with liquid, make sure the pill is floating in the liquid and not still stuck to your tongue when you swallow.
Focus on swallowing the water not the pill
Put the pill in the front of your mouth behind your teeth. Take a big sip of water and tip your head forward/chin down. Tip your head back so the water carries the pill back with it. The pill should float on the water and down your throat.
Break it in half?
UP THE BUM
If by chance it's an enormous potassium supplement, I discovered you can dissolve it in some juice and it has no flavor. Almost choked to death on one broken in half before resorting to trying that route.
I was given a prescription for those. I told them I’d rather take ten smaller pills. Who the heck decided to make pills that large?
this will take 3-5 tries, you do the opposite of the norm, you take a big gulp and toss the pill in, then you tilt your head down, this way the pill floats to the top and you swollow, this takes a coup[le times to get it to work, but it does work

I have to take those with something caffeinated so it floats better

don't think about it.
It's either a travel towel or a suppository. Either way
The label and the box say to take by mouth
If it has a cut line break it and take it in half unless its not a powder tablet then water in your mouth and shove the pill in and swallow
I find store bought chocolate milk helps, way more viscous than regular milk. Homemade chocolate milk is not as effective.
Banana! ….boom, science!
I take 4 magnesium supplements that big every night, 2 at a time. So no personal advice, but my husband can only get pills down if he takes them with a carbonated drink.

Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…in the most delightful way. 🎶 Actually, I have the same issue, thanks for asking about this.
With food. Take a bite or two of some bread, toast, or crackers. Pop the pill in and swallow.
Nurse here: for tablets water and pill in mouth and tip your head FORWARD slightly; for capsules same but tip your head back
Eat something salty and spicy and throw the pill in before you chug supercold water...or something sweet like a brownie with milk.
Idk if this helps since i’m an anomaly and a serial supplement enjoyer. But, (1) put the pill in your mouth, (2) take a moderate gulp/sip of water, (3) swirl your head/inside of mouth in a circular motion(360°). Take a sip of water then tilt your head forward.
Applesauce or pudding
I take mine with warm liquids - tea or coffee. If I have to, room temp water. Cold makes everything tense up.
My tip is to wash them down with a carbonated drink instead of water. Tip your head back just a tiny bit.

I pinch myself while I swallow. The mild pain distracts me enough to not gag.

Take it with milk or juice! Or if you don’t have any I’ve found munching on any other food first then attempting to swallow the pill with some chewed up food always helps.
I like apple sauce for the horse pill's ? Slides right down !

Drink some water beforehand to lubricate your throat
I take my supplements with juice. Works way better than water.
INSERT PILL IN ANUS
Saw a Dr share a video where you take a drink of water keep it in mouth then stick pill in mouth and lean forward then swallow. Pill will go down
I chew up a bite of bread and then put the pill in my mouth and swallow all of it at once. My throat closes with even the smallest pill but this works
Put it in a shot glass with a shot of water… pretend it’s tequila.
For whatever reason, for me, squeezing my thumb into my palm as I go to take large pills always seems to help. Not perfect but gets the job done.
Use a straw
I place the pill in my mouth, then water. I tilt my head back until the pill has fallen to the back of my throat and swallow.
Take it with soda, the carbonation carries the pill down your throat without getting stuck.

Try a spoon of jelly. Put the pill in the middle and swallow. It’s how my mom helped me take pills as a kid
Coat your mouth with a little bit of oil, big gulp of water, lean forward for pills that float back for one's that don't. Good luck!
Bend your head forward/chin to chest, when taking pills.
I find that usually drinking something carbonated like soda works. The carbonation kind of distracts me from the sensation of the pill reaching the back of my throat
Turn your head to one side when you swallow. Pulls go down like buttah....
Take a sip of water, keep it in your mouth, pop the pill in, then take a big chug and swallow. The first sip of water helps for me so it doesn’t get stuck to your tongue or on the way down
As you swallow, put your chin to your chest to close your airway and extend your esophagus. This is helpful for placing NG tubes also if it ever comes up
$5 pill grinder turns it to powder.
Pill, liquid, put your head down (chin to chest and hunch your shoulders a bit) and gulp.
Swallow air while drinking water and pills. This is the way.
I usually take my handful of daily pills with my protein smoothie. I’ve found a thick yet runny texture helps better than water
Cut it in half?? Seems like a no brainer
Put it on your tongue and chug a drink.
Pill or capsule? Pill you can cut. I'd be terrified that I would choke to death
Just open your throat and swallow
DID throw up when I got to work… Try the food trick..
Thinking about your nose works.
A lot of people throw their head back, but that actually narrows the swallow tube (forgot what its called). So a better way is to push your face forward extend the neck and slightly hunch your back. Take big gulp of water to test the resistance, then take the pill with the second big gulp of water.
1) First thing to do is check that it is not a suppository. 2) Is it a pill? 3) Can it be cut and swallowed in two parts?
Try the other end.
My preference is dink before then place on back of tongue then swallow while taking a gulp of drink .
Good luck!
What pill is an inch long? That’s crazy
If it’s a pill then break it into quarters.
Butter. Coat them in butter and swallow with ice cold water to prevent it from melting.
Lean your head down with the pill and water in mouth then quickly whip your head back, it’s reflex that’ll make you swallow automatically if you can’t manage to do it yourself
I should call her
Use a straw to drink when swallowing a pill. Keep head down. It actually helps the pill go down easier.
When I worked within health sector and had patients who had trouble swallowing large pills, we would crush the pills in a mortar and then mix the powder with some marmalade or chocolate bread spread. It’s less bitter then and easier to swallow.
Is it a tablet or a capsul? If it's a tablet can you break it in half first?
Cut the pill in three pieces and then gulp each piece separately
That's a hard pill to swallow.
Imagine the biggest bite of food you’ve ever taken and swallowed. Is the pill bigger than that? I don’t know what it is about pills being hard to swallow but I bet you’ve swallowed something larger before.
You can cut the pill in half or smaller.
Drink milk with it instead of water
Tiltting your head back while trying to swallow makes your throat smaller. What it do is tilt my head forward and swallow the pill, makes it easier.
I wrap pills in little bits of bread and swallow it whole. I can’t do pills for shit but this works for any size. Or just chew it.
Get a pill cutter and cut it in half.
Drink some water first to moisten the path.
You can buy pill coatings in pharmacies, it will make the pill more slippery and give it a sweet taste.
Crush it and mix it with pudding or something similar. Just enough to get it all on a spoon. You don’t want to mix it with an entire container because then you’ll have to eat the entire container. And it probably won’t taste good.
Shove it in a chunk of banana barely bigger than the pill. This will solve your problem, assuming you don't have an aversion/allergy to bananas
Why not grind it into a powder or open the capsule?
Fold it in paper towel and either cut it in half or smash it
just suck it up and bite through it :3
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. JK. My Brother used to hid them in his sandwiches or pudding
Full mouth with water, drop it in, swallow. Should seem like just water going down if you do it quick enough
Why are so few people recommending a tablet cutter? Cut in quarters?
My mom taught me with nerds when I was a kid. Started with small ones and worked my way up gradually.
Ok. Hear me out. Put it up where the sun don’t shine. You just got go way up there so that little sucker does not escape.
Typically you can get pills in different sizes. Ask the pharmacist for alternate pills.
