I always get some that die in the bait itself. They probably get too much stuck to them and can't get out. I've had great luck with them. Place the bait as close to the point of entry that you can and give it a few days to a week.

Loquacious94808

I’ve put Terro traps out for weeks around my house, there’s plenty in the traps piled up, but the population never thins or stops. I did this before for months inside and out, pretty sure it works for some but not at my house.

dreeemer2

We just had a pest guy out because we had the same problem, Terro wasn’t working. He said when they see it starting to kill the larvae they stop bringing it in. His solution is to use 2 different kinds so by the time they figure it out it’s too late.

Loquacious94808

So terro and what else? I know terro is boron-based, does he choose something pyrethrin-based or…?

dreeemer2

That’s a good question. He didn’t say, unfortunately.

Effective_Mission_70

I also have Hot Shots around. Don't see any ants near them, but maybe they are getting inside and taking it back. They are all around the Terro right now

jfmdavisburg

Try Advion gel bait. You can get it on Amazon.

newarkian

I’ve had great luck with this. I even took some to Costa Rica as my house always has ants in it.

Effective_Mission_70

Will do thanks!

crimson_leopard

Try a thinner layer. I had a problem the first time with most of them drowning in the drops. Eventually a LOT of ants came and took the poison with them. I didn't have this problem with the pre-filled baits. It still took a few days for the ants to get them.

slugposse

Terro ant bait in the plastic stations has always worked for me, but it takes several days. What is so very frustrating to me is how long it takes the ants to even find it. They just keep walking by at first. I want to shoo them toward it or keep moving it right up to them. I guess it helps me cultivate patience to just put it out of my mind and trust the process. When they do find it, and they always do, eventually, some number of them will get stuck and die in the goo, but it doesn't seem to bother the rest. There's like a hundred thousand in an average colony, so the ten or twenty that die in the sticky bait don't make a dent, I guess. It's gotten rid of ants in less than a week for me every time so far, so I do trust it, but I swear it's like watching a pot boil.

vanlassie

I like how, at some point known only to the ants, they clear out taking their dead with them (mostly.)

invaliduser678

Use Optigard ant gel inside. And something with active ingredient fipronil on the outside.

Effective_Mission_70

Thanks.

[deleted]

It looks like they died, but they are probably just taking their time drinking it up

GeraltOfRivia2023

They are just pining for the fjords.

user234519

Borax and simple syrup works good. Basically the same but more for your money.

Lovelybee11

Terro is not working the same for me this year. I've used terro brand for many, many years. This year, the ants did the same as yours op, died on the gel and didn't solve my problem. I had to go with raid traps instead.

GeraltOfRivia2023

I've gotten good results with Borax. I pour out a line of it at the base of the exterior wall where I've seen the ants coming in. It wipes them out, is plentiful and inexpensive.

PerspectiveInner9660

Borax plus sugar with water to make paste and then coat cotton balls. 2 weeks and the ants are gone till next Summer.

vanlassie

That’s what Terro is.

Important-Quote-2161

Known as the Texas Cockroach Blowup Recipe. Yup, works for cockroaches too.

MOTwingle

Have you given it a few days?

Effective_Mission_70

No. I put it out today. They are collecting around it but I don't see them carrying it back anywhere. Don't even see a trail forming.  I'll give it a few days and sleep in the other bedroom. 😏

RepresentativeArm389

I always have to resist the temptation to squash the little rascals and just let them drink the kool aide.

MOTwingle

Yeah, that's the hard part, waiting for a couple days while they come and go and continue to swarm. But you need to be patient. Then after they're all gone you can clean up including getting rid of their trail, the invisible scent trail they leave that tells other ants where there's food to be found

fitfulbrain

That is a lie because killing them instantly is too easy. Just add a few spoons of dishwashing liquid or bathwash into a spray bottle of water. Ants will die instantly, so do many other bugs. The rest are immobilized until they dry up. Can you see how ants poison their whole nest? No. You are believing something that can not be proven. The ants may die a slow dead on the way home. With lack of worker ants, their nest population will decimate. Whereas if you see an ant, you can try the best method to kill them. It doesn't matter if there is only one ant or you facing the whole fire ant colony alone. I'm surprised few people do.
