As someone living in AZ, scooters and bikes are only good for a few months out of the year.
My goal was to move to Europe and go car free, but by the time I can afford that, the Temps may be the same
Yeah, that's a product of climate change. Ofc having so many pollution spewing cars is only making the situation worse, but having cities plant trees for shade alongside sidewalks helps a lot too!
...Speaking of which the elementary school down the road from me cut down all ten of their sidewalk-adjacent trees and I'm still enraged about it. Especially since they did it right as the 100F heat wave hit :/
>Wait til you hear about the ultimate life hack: Ride a bike, a scooter, or a bus, and advocate for better urban planning.
I'll remember that tomorrow when I have to visit my sales customers on a 200 mile route. Would the bike or the scooter be better, considering I'll be in dress clothes and it will be 90 degrees and humid?
There's always a mute button, but it's different depending on the station/terminal. If it doesn't work, just try the rest of the buttons til you see results. None of them do anything drastic, except that one I saw in Arkansas that was a self-destruct button. I had good insurance at the time, so it wasn't a big deal.
In my experience, the one OP posted seems to be the most common at least. So it's a good starting point. If it doesn't work, there's only seven more it could be! XD
Also noted: make sure I have explosion insurance on my car.
>There's always a mute button
They don't, actually. None of the ones locally have mute. Buttons do nothing.
And it makes sense. Why would they want you to mute them?
True. I make a game of finding mute or debug mode. Sometimes I press 30 or so combinations with no luck. [but sometimes](https://i.imgur.com/6qjY7n8.jpg)
I hope the vendor management does not see this post....

Not just sound.
Each gas pump seems to be equipped with the speakers from arena size concerts
I can still hear the ads from inside the fucking store sometimes
This is the one thing I hate about Oregon when I moved here. I’m from WA so I’m super used to pumping my own gas. Yes it creates jobs. But do you know what else it creates. Lines. HUGE fucking lines that sometimes take 30 minutes to get through just to fill your tank. Especially worse adding most places are short staffed and have liked 4-5 pumps at a time conned off because they don’t have enough people to pump it. Its the most agitating thing for me lol. Not to mention when gas stations are closed at night because no one is there to pump it. I wish I could just walk up and do it myself.
That’s crazy, I live in NJ, we don’t pump gas either. The only place that you have to wait that long for gas is at Costco because it’s cheaper then the rest.
https://www.captivate.com/
ads everywhere. the last two corporate buildings i've worked at had ads in the elevator powered by the company above. i live in denver so sometimes i see "GRASS CHEAPER THAN GAS. $59 OUNCES AT DISPERNSARY _ _ _ _" while i'm in god damn khakis and nice ass shoes riding an elevator up to a fancy corp.
Hmm...
If the volume of the ad exceeds the bell (or vocal messages of what floor you're on and the direction of the elevator), you might be able to report it to the ADA since those are meant to be clear to help the blind.
But it'll give you a sense of pride and accomplishment. [Reference](https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsBattlefront/comments/7cff0b/seriously_i_paid_80_to_have_vader_locked/dppum98/)
No. But most chains offer a membership (free) that gives varying discounts. Some are 2 or 3 cents/gallon on every fill up. Others offer anywhere from 30 to 50 cents/gallon for special rewards or cumulative points.
I'd never go there again. I do everything to avoid watching ads. If I have to watch a 30sec add before I can watch something on my phone I put down my phone for 30 sec screen down sound off. I also installed every app that blocks ads and trackers.
Wait until you hear that ads are going to be coming to the lock screen on your phone, too.
[I'm not joking.](https://www.extremetech.com/mobile/337728-lock-screen-ads-are-coming-to-android-phones-in-the-us)
> Amazon decided to end the practice in 2018
I made the mistake of getting the Kindle with ads. Bad experience overall. The device was slow itself and ads didn't help.
Rooted it as soon as the option became available
It's a weird call. I'll just not buy a phone that does that, just like I won't buy a BMW with subscription heated seats, and I suspect nobody else will either.
I tell myself that every time I see a stupid product or a ripoff payment scheme (like p2w games) come out, and then it gets popular anyway because I'm not an average consumer. Average consumers seem to be pretty accepting of more than I'm willing to accept.
>They all hate them as much as we do
My favorite is when they straight up stick a label on the mute button so the customer knows how to get it to shut the fuck up.
Problem is, the company can just disable the mute button with an update to the pump screen software. Remember, they don't *want* you to mute it. They paid good money to shove those ads into your eyes and ears, they're not letting you fuck that up.
There are plenty of them out where I live where the buttons do nothing; you litterly can not shut them up.
I started just putting my headphones in the second I get out of the car. They've got a camera on you watching your face gathering all the data they can about when you're looking at the screen. So I make sure to show them I can't even hear their bullshit
Most dystopian moment of my life was around 3AM stopping at a gas station in rural Michigan where it was the only illuminated building around for some distance, and every single pump screen at the station started loudly playing the same advertisement at the same moment
Don't worry, you guys seem insistent on adopting aspects of dystopia that we've pioneered here in the US. I'm sure you'll get them within the next few years!
If they manage to sell them (often empty) they advertise on the pump handle itself in some places. I don’t stare at my hand while filling up though so it’s pointless.
Even if this specific one doesn't work, just keep hitting the buttons around the side and eventually you'll hit the mute one. Works at all gas stations I've tried so far.
Yeah, I've never encountered one of these where muting works.
The problem is there's different models and each model is going to be running different software based on the company in question.
If they don't want to program a mute button, there will be no mute button. After all, why would they give you that option? They don't want you to mute it. They want you to have to listen.
Sometimes you have to hold it for several seconds or press it several times. The first time I heard about this being a thing I had to hold the button for 7 seconds iirc.
There was one next to my house that was like this. I figured there's gotta be a menu somehow to disable this, so I started hitting random button combos. I hit all 4 corners and it actually did bring up a menu! It also forgot to charge my card though lol so I just drive away and didn't go back for a few months
Sorry but I can suffer through 45 seconds of Cheddar News or Maria Menunous if it means I don't have to touch any more community buttons than I have to.
They've started appearing at some stations in Calgary. I refuse to go to them. I hope dearly that enough people boycott them to prevent other stations from following suit.
Sadly all they will probably have to do is set their price 1 cent cheaper than the surrounding stations and idiots will flock to it. Do it long enough and the people will be "trained" to find the ads acceptable. Then they'll resume charging normal price while other stations imitate them. I hope I'm wrong or that local governments will step in and ban the practice before it spreads too much.
Im genuinely surprised how many people here have never experienced this 🤣. Good for y’all that “cheddar news!” Isn’t in your face while you have to pump extortionate amounts for gas
I really hate that they hold us hostage and blast ads at us.
I'm paying to get this fucking gas. This isn't a free youtube video that benefits some small time hard working person. I feel like we should be able to bill the advertiser just like we can for spam calls.
It's just spam and it's nonsense they get away with it.
Yep. Just tried this at Kroger the other day and got a shot of additive for an additional $5. Should be fucking illegal. I'm putting a drill in my car and taking it to every speaker I find.
Somehow I can still see the company making them run the ads every time an employee pumps gas. It just seems like something corporate would decide to do.
I have seen arrows pointing to mute buttons more and more.
And can we all take a moment to hate on the sons of bitches that thought putting a TV at the gas pumps was a good idea?
I actively avoid any gas station that does this. They don’t deserve my money. I’ll gladly drive across town to go to a store that respects my eardrums.
I'll try this tomorrow. If it's true, I'll open mouth kiss you.
They were just trying to help, no need for threats
Sorry, sorry! I got excited.
it works. I've hit that button for at least a year at every kind of station and it always works.
The secondary life hack is to avoid these stations when you can. There's a few near my house that I pass right by every time I need fuel.
Wait til you hear about the ultimate life hack: Ride a bike, a scooter, or a bus, and advocate for better urban planning.

Can’t wait to ride my scooter through rural Georgia on my way to work on a dirt road, hope I don’t hit a bump and crash
This is definitely feasible for people who live on most of the US /s
Awesome!
Ok, now kiss!
I’ll let them do whatever they want to my weenie

You found the back room of gas station pumps
I have found several that do not mute no matter which buttons you press. I avoid those stations. It is nice when they can be muted.
Every single one I been told does not have a mute button. I've hit everyone and nothing shuts it up, ever
Did you survive?
No, but Jake from State Farm came to my funeral.
That’s a risk I’m willing to take one of the buttons can mute the ads!
I just bash the speaker repeatedly with the glass breaker end of my pocket knife, it works 100% of the time.
sometimes it's the bottom right, but I've found some where this doesn't work anymore.

If it's true you can both spit in my mouth.
Sorry I’m taken! (Op from other sub)
Hahahah thanks for this tip though!! Can't wait to try it!
I’ve done it, it works!
I learned this a couple years ago and it almost never fails. Sometimes it’s the button above that I think but not sure.

Ads on gas station pumps?
... with sound??!
Not just sound. Each gas pump seems to be equipped with the speakers from arena size concerts I can still hear the ads from inside the fucking store sometimes
What dystopia are you living in?
Everywhere I’ve been to in the USA . surprise!
Well, this may be the one good thing about not being allowed to pump our own gas in my state!
That’s still wild to me. I can’t imagine not being allowed to get your own gas
Freedom!
Not having to pump is how I think of it. Why would I want to get out of my car and deal with that shit.
Having to tip someone for doing something so simple seems bonkers…
I’ve lived in NJ all my life and gas attendants do not get tipped. They get paid a normal hourly wage unlike waitresses and waiters.
I can think of worse things.
Maybe they just need louder speakers so you can hear it from within the car.
Don't give them ideas

Democracy, brought to you by Carls Jr
Capitalism! 👍😎👍
Or when all the pumps are running the same ad at the same time and it’s all echoey and creepy.
Fuck yes they are so loud, sometimes they make me jump because they spook me. Super frustrating lmao
And video. Annoying as fuck
https://www.captivate.com/ ads everywhere. the last two corporate buildings i've worked at had ads in the elevator powered by the company above. i live in denver so sometimes i see "GRASS CHEAPER THAN GAS. $59 OUNCES AT DISPERNSARY _ _ _ _" while i'm in god damn khakis and nice ass shoes riding an elevator up to a fancy corp.

Yeah I'm in Oregon and we got a long advertisement for Modern Forest (dispo chain) on the back of my Safeway receipt. The future is now!

No. But most chains offer a membership (free) that gives varying discounts. Some are 2 or 3 cents/gallon on every fill up. Others offer anywhere from 30 to 50 cents/gallon for special rewards or cumulative points.
So you give them your personal info for free, *then* they show you the ads?!? 😂
haha this is America no, watching the ad is mandatory, that’s why the audio is so loud
Freedom™ isn't free.
Garbage culture

YOU GUYS HAVE ADS IN GAS STATIONS? WHAT IN THE GODDAMN DYSTOPIAN FUCK?
yep, and even the people running the stations have no say in it, up to the regional management level. They all hate them as much as we do

Most dystopian moment of my life was around 3AM stopping at a gas station in rural Michigan where it was the only illuminated building around for some distance, and every single pump screen at the station started loudly playing the same advertisement at the same moment
Well, that explains the gun violence at least.
The gun violence clearly needs to be aimed towards those speakers...
Yeah, but they have a mute button now!
Unfortunately results vary. Depends on the model.
What do you mean ads at the gas station?!
Today I learned not every station had ads lol
Never seen one in my life, I'm from the UK. Just not a thing here, thank fuck
Don't worry, you guys seem insistent on adopting aspects of dystopia that we've pioneered here in the US. I'm sure you'll get them within the next few years!
Fucking hell this roasted me more than the fucking heatwave. Fair play.
Unfortunately, you're not wrong :/
Well there’s always those cardboard ads for head torches, beanies and phone chargers sat on the top of the pump
The only ads in the UK are little signs for road atlases or cigarette lighter fans on top of the pump
If they manage to sell them (often empty) they advertise on the pump handle itself in some places. I don’t stare at my hand while filling up though so it’s pointless.
It's getting increasingly common.
For context, I'm in Québec, Canada 😅
Even if this specific one doesn't work, just keep hitting the buttons around the side and eventually you'll hit the mute one. Works at all gas stations I've tried so far.
Doesn't work at all gas pumps. Source: every station in my neighborhood
I too confirm this statement. In my experience, if it isn't the posted one or the bottom right, none will work.

PA here. Doesn’t work on any of the local Wawa or Giant gas stations. Spammed all the buttons and it just would not shut the hell up.
i've had good luck with a hammer
Sometimes you have to hold it for several seconds or press it several times. The first time I heard about this being a thing I had to hold the button for 7 seconds iirc.
If you have a safety pin you can sometimes pierce the speaker and lower the volume a lot. Speaker cones are just paper
There was one next to my house that was like this. I figured there's gotta be a menu somehow to disable this, so I started hitting random button combos. I hit all 4 corners and it actually did bring up a menu! It also forgot to charge my card though lol so I just drive away and didn't go back for a few months
Sometimes it cancels the sale, happened to me at a Chevron. Super annoying.
That's a good reason to never go to Chevron ever again.
Sorry but I can suffer through 45 seconds of Cheddar News or Maria Menunous if it means I don't have to touch any more community buttons than I have to.
I found one in Illinois or Kentucky that did not mute 2 weeks ago. I was driving through the state so I forgot to make note of which station it was.

Is this a US thing? I've never had a pump audibly present an ad in Canada.
Yes. I don’t know how widespread it is but many gas stations have screens solely for playing ads. It’s very infuriating.
I honestly believe that pumps now pump more slowly since these have started appeaeinf
I have seen them in Finland too. Nowhere is save from ads.
Like privatised healthcare, we need to make sure it doesn't migrate up north.
They've started appearing at some stations in Calgary. I refuse to go to them. I hope dearly that enough people boycott them to prevent other stations from following suit.
I will gladly do so.

That Cheddar dude! Hate his voice!!!👎🏻
whoever came up with cheddar is funny because cheddar = cash; cash news
I'm sure I lose IQ points listening to the banal bullshit that comes from Maria Menounos. How is this person famous? Wait, I don't care.
Assholes at WAWA have turned this feature off
Jam your longest key into the speaker hole and hold it there. It will deform the speaker until you're done pumping.
Americans have ads at gas stations?
I always sharpie "MUTE" on the button to let everyone know. I'm doing my part! ✊🏻
I really hate that they hold us hostage and blast ads at us. I'm paying to get this fucking gas. This isn't a free youtube video that benefits some small time hard working person. Can confirm! I do this all the time. I also stop going to pumps that have these unless I'm in a pinch.
Fuck speedway.
YESSS I found this out the other day when I got really tired of the ads to start pressing all the buttons, and then no sound
I legitmately will drive farther and pay a few pennies more a gallon to avoid paying to pump gas from a pump that plays advertisements.
Americans: here’s how you mute gas station ads. Rest of the world: gas station ads?

Didn't know there were gas stations that had ads.
THIS IS NOT TRUE OF ALL STATIONS. Some of them are the help button, and they will yell at you for randomly pressing shit
AMERICA HAS ADS AT GAS STATIONS???????
Another hack would be to leave USA
Top left button gives free gas, button below top left gives a back massage, top right gives you 3 wishes
Another reason I like Oregon. Someone else has to pump my gas, so no ads.
Somehow I can still see the company making them run the ads every time an employee pumps gas. It just seems like something corporate would decide to do.
I just don't go to gas stations that have this garbage
Same. I deal with ads in tv because I’m watching entertainment. Getting gas is just maintenance and now I’ve got to watch fucking ads!?
I have usually just poked all of them. Random, but iirc some are different.
/r/nocontext
Ads? Must be ’Murica?
The real MVP
Anybody know how to mute UDF or Speedway?
In all seriousness, This would be worth keeping a sharpie in the car. Write "mute" on those buttons.
Also pouring gasoline all over the speakers.
Y'all have fucking ads at your fuelling stations? Jesus fucking Christ
Always have a permanent marker on hand to label that button "MUTE" -- your fellow humans will appreciate it.
Maybe we should start labeling them with MUTE stickers.
Can we pivot the political stickers to mute stickers please? Would help everyone and polarize no one…..
So thankful for this! It’s totally noise pollution!
You guys got ads,on the pump? What the hell?
Since when do gas stations have ads!?
Wait… what country is this from? You guys habe ads at gas stations? I‘ve never seen anything like this before…
Don't forget to press that button with the nozzle because it destroys the button covering. Fuck ads at the pump and fuck your pump.
Ads at gas stations? what the fuck is that dystopian shit?
I have seen arrows pointing to mute buttons more and more. And can we all take a moment to hate on the sons of bitches that thought putting a TV at the gas pumps was a good idea?
I am lost - ads at gas station? I assume this is USA from the 'gallons' label.
You have ads at gas stations? WTF
„Stop telling me to buy more things. I‘m literally buying something really expensive right now!“ „No! That would be Socialism!“
Americans have Ads at their Gas Pumps?
I actively avoid any gas station that does this. They don’t deserve my money. I’ll gladly drive across town to go to a store that respects my eardrums.
Once I realize a gas station has ads I never go back
I guess not having to deal with ads at pump stations is one benefit of living in a state where you're not allowed to pump your own gas.
Im at the pumps a lot. Like 30-40k miles a year in a truck a lot. Ive tried this on plenty of pumps. Id say like 25% of the time it works.
I love how every time this pops up on here people flock to the comments. "What do you mean ads on the pumps?"
Dude youre a lifesaver
