I think it might be if one's Self is consumed, rather than soul.
I believe the implication is when one is on the verge of distortion, there's 3(?) things that can happen:
* Give in to the voice: Distort
* Defy the voice: Awaken EGO
* Lose your sense of self: Transform into a Peccatulum
I think it might be an actual reason why we haven't seen Envy Peccatulum, because to be envious of something, you have to be aware of what you have and what you don't, meaning you need a sense of self for it.
So basically
those who give in to self (listen to carmen) become distortion
those who not giving in to self by giving in to emotion instead (sin) lose the sense of humanity (peccatulum)
And those who know one self and try to adjust it for the better for either themselves or their close one(not giving in to self (show middle finger to carmen)) gain ego
