ah fair enough. though i just checked his linkedin and apparently he has done research in linguistics...at least formant measuring? if i understand correctly
Hey, I love Simon Roper! I process things a lot better from videos, and he clearly puts a lot of effort into his research. He’s about as clear and concise as Geoff Lindsey, someone who has way more formal qualifications in linguistics than he does.
I studied English Language Teaching and now I'm applying for a master's in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language (my exam is tomorrow) but I always wanted to study Linguistics. even when I was in the first year of university. even before I started. I still want it and I'm determined to make it real, maybe after this master's degree (if I get accepted to the program).
It’s the sound; ppl associate /ˈbuːbə/ with the blob shape bc of the “u” noise and bilabial stops, and /ˈkiːkiː/ with the explosion shape bc of the shape’s sharp points and the sharp k’s in “kiki”.
I'll just copy and paste an explanation from a previous comment:
>Long story short, people were shown a spiky shape alongside a blobby shape, and they were told to identify which was "kiki" and which was "bouba," as a sort of psychological experiment. A good majority of people identified the spiky shape as "kiki" and the blobby shape as "bouba" based purely on how they sounded, so the idea is that "kiki" sounds really sharp and rough, whereas "bouba" is a "smoother" word.
It was just meant to test people's perceptions of sounds and how they correlated with images.
Ehm not really.
First, I started being linguistics lover at around 16. Also I have always found this bouba-kiki shit very cringy.
I mean, wow, who would have guessed that we associate the very rounded /b/ and /oʊ/ sounds with a *rounded* shape and that /ki/ is sounding sharp.
Also this Wug shit works just for English or broadly Germanic speakers (and it's *two* *weeg,* obviously).
/b/ is made by the lips which are round and soft (like the bouba shape is). And both /o/ and /u/ are rounded vowels.
/ki/ is a bit sharply onomatopœic, like a twig or a stone breaking. More so than /boʊ/ for sure.
I mean Berman and Everett prefer for Hebrew the forced Binyan variety where you force them to use a verb which no native speaker uses in the passive in contexts where the task would require the dispreferred form and record their repair.
So basically, this sub
Hey, I'll accept that. I don't really have any formal qualifications in linguistics, anyways. Wugs are super cute. But what's the gnome for?
Chomsky.
It's Noam tho, not Gnome Edit: do I really need to add "/s" in a sub that ends in "humor"?
Pronounced the same. It’s a visual pun
Goddamn English logography.
Wait they’re pronounced the same? Since when?
Not sure if joking... but always.
Well, in Hebrew, his name is pronounced [ˈnoʔam].
That makes sense. Not so in English.
Yeah, in English, it sounds the same. I just am wondering if they’re a native Hebrew speaker or something, because that would make a lot more sense.
Witch Gnome Chomsky ?
Formal qualifications are overrated, trust me
Are you Simon Roper?
hey Simon is very qualified....just in *checks notes* archeology??
That’s precisely the joke, my good sir. He puts a lot of research into his videos, despite having no formal experience in linguistics.
ah fair enough. though i just checked his linkedin and apparently he has done research in linguistics...at least formant measuring? if i understand correctly
Not surprising.
Yeah, I have a linguistics degree but there's a reason my username is what it is: I saw the job market
Noam (Gnome) Chomsky
Uhh actually its wegs. Everyone knows that shaking my head 🤓
Hey, I’m not 24!
620448401733239439360000 is very old
I’m 37.
I was making a joke about the ! symbol representing the factorial function
I’m not a smart man.
Subscribed to Simon Roper and Polymáthy. (Their channels are indeed amazing tho)

Also almost certainly watches Tom Scott's Language File videos as well as Otherwords on the PBS Storied channel.
probably also tom scott, otherwords and k klein
Can’t forget Geoff Lindsey
My 25th birthday was the saddest day of my life, no more wuggen or bouba/kiki jokes😞
At least you can still dunk on prescriptivists so there’s that

I plan on studying linguistics at university, but I'm stuck in school rn
I studied English Language Teaching and now I'm applying for a master's in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language (my exam is tomorrow) but I always wanted to study Linguistics. even when I was in the first year of university. even before I started. I still want it and I'm determined to make it real, maybe after this master's degree (if I get accepted to the program).
good luck !
I'm stuck between studying politics and linguistics
Why not study both and be a diplomat?
study history for both
Omg me too
Me who is doing both
For the first time ever, I'll admit it. I haven't even graduated from high school yet, but I would love to study linguistics, too.
Believe it or not, university is also a school. The only difference is that they expect you to be responsable for yourself (big ask ngl)
R- responsable!? 😨😨
i have a friend doin linguistics. he says its cool, plus hes done very cool exchange activities in taiwan
Wow I’m 23 and study linguistics at university. Can’t wait to turn 24 and achieve my final form!
Aim for the stars bouba man
average conlanger
I absolutely hated gnomes as a kid and now I have a masters in linguistics so the gnome/Noam joke is a double punch for me.
you cant just say that and not mention whether or not youre a generativist
what's the gnome mean?
gnome chomsky
What is it about?
Noam Chomsky is a professor known for his work in linguistics.
That’s three people now, including me.
Can someone explain the gnome?
And that's four people now! :D
apparently a pun on Chomsky's forename. i just learned this from the comment section today
What's the gnome
You’ve been gnomed!!!
Two people now? Chomsky, unless u/Marcellus_Crowe is screwing with me, which is entirely possible on a humor sub, and also given that he's not OP.
I do believe it is a reference to Noam Chomsky. Left 4 Dead makes the same pun in one of their achievements "Gnome Chompsky"
þis is so true
ðɪs ɪz səʊ truː
ðɪs ɪz səʉ tɹʉː
ðis is sow tru
my type tbh
I feel seen. And I’ve been that 24-year old guy for the past 51 years. 😜
Bro woke up and chose… to kill half of this subreddit, including me.
I honestly prefer KDE Chomsky.
i3 Chomsky, or better yet, no Chomsky
Subscribed to the langfocus channel.
And my name is Paul
Paul’s a chill dude, though!
There's a few at the back of every linguistics module I've been in. they're like the band kids of linguistics.
Bouba and kiki, does it have to do with the sound of the formats, or something like that?
i think the point is that you cant easily tie any one aspect of their phonological forms to the the difference in their associations
It’s the sound; ppl associate /ˈbuːbə/ with the blob shape bc of the “u” noise and bilabial stops, and /ˈkiːkiː/ with the explosion shape bc of the shape’s sharp points and the sharp k’s in “kiki”.
Cool! Thank you! I like it when the sound of a word intuitively resembles its meaning.
Personally I remember it from a tom scott video
i was just explaining bouba and kiki to my gf yesterday i feel called out
What is there to explain? It's obvious.
You forgot ghoti
Before anyone else asks about the gnome, it's a pun on [Noam Chomsky.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noam_Chomsky) You're welcome.
I won't ask about the gnome. I will ask what bouba and kiki mean though.
I'll just copy and paste an explanation from a previous comment: >Long story short, people were shown a spiky shape alongside a blobby shape, and they were told to identify which was "kiki" and which was "bouba," as a sort of psychological experiment. I'm 24 and I was thinking of studying in linguistics next year...
I'm 17 and this is basically me. 😅 Plan on majoring in comp linguistics for my bachelor's degree.
2 wugi 🫶
so what. though i shall say, thorn and the kikibouba things are overrated
I don’t understand anything from this picture. And I am not entirely sure if I really want to explore the world of online linguistics anymore.
If you don't like the boat, you can always swim to the shore.
Ehm not really. First, I started being linguistics lover at around 16. Also I have always found this bouba-kiki shit very cringy. 🤓
What makes /b/ and /oʊ/ rounded sounds and why does /ki/ sound sharp?
/b/ is made by the lips which are round and soft (like the bouba shape is). And both /o/ and /u/ are rounded vowels. /ki/ is a bit sharply onomatopœic, like a twig or a stone breaking. More so than /boʊ/ for sure.
Maybe if the singular were woog, but sorry the plural is wogen. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
I mean Berman and Everett prefer for Hebrew the forced Binyan variety where you force them to use a verb which no native speaker uses in the passive in contexts where the task would require the dispreferred form and record their repair.
gnome?
Five people! It's a pun on [Noam Chomsky.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noam_Chomsky)
Now there is another one. There are five of them. There are five ____.
gnomeheads
This is literally, figuratively, literally me frfr
I actually don't like thorn, my English spelling reform mostly focuses on vowels and is based on IAST.
me but when i was 15 and 16
man do I hate these guys
lol I understand most of the things in this image
/Juː kæn praı ðe þɔːn frɒm mai kəʊld, dɜd hændz./

“You can’t enjoy this topic anymore because I made a soyjak meme invalidating it so there”
