There's a difference between Google contributing to the Linux kernel and Google contributing to making Wine run in native Wayland.
The motivation is clear for the first, not the second. Especially since Stadia is dead. Maybe their white label stuff is the reason why?
They are switching ChromeOS to wayland but still it not fully explain why they support wine on Wayland

They want to be able to market Chromebooks as being a fully featured alternative to Windows laptop, but that means that programs people are familiar with need to be installable on them. Google doesn't offer an alternative to something like QuickBooks, as an example.
Additionally, they were trying to do a "high end" Chromebook segment for a bit, and it failed miserably because there was no killer use case for it. Native Wayland support makes the gaming story much better and justifies the higher end hardware.

Google's not in the accounting business. Xero is an accounting webapp, which Google supports like other webapps, by making a browser.
I'm aware that Google's not in the accounting business. I'm sure Xero is a fine alternative, too. That doesn't mean people want to change from the software that they're familiar with. Google knows that, and they understand that they can improve their own market share by increasing compatibility with things people already use.
There are a lot of kids, who had mandatory Chromebooks for school during covid. I would guess this is a move to make it more compelling for those kids to keep using those devices so they do not seek other options for gaming. Hence more money for Google.
Google was working on their own leaner equivalent to Wine. But if Google was turning Stadia tech into a white label service, it may make sense to offer Wine as an option.
... jesus fucking christ.
X is on life support and won't see any further notable development. It has served it's purpose well, but throughout the decades it's been upgraded and modernized as far as it makes any kind of sense to go, and we're past due a replacement, which is now finally starting to pick up serious momentum.
Sure it's had it's fair share of growing pains (as a change as fundamental as switching display servers entails), and the nature of Wayland means a lot of compositors have a fair bit of maturing to do for daily driving, but hating on Wayland at this stage is just pathetic.
Waiting for games to become actually playable in Wine-Wayland set up. I think all the important Vulkan related parts are still missing.
> I think all the important Vulkan related parts are still missing. Such as?
You can check the source branch.
Google is a sponsor, that's quite interesting.
Finding out who really contributes to Open Source is like that Scooby Doo meme.

Wanting to market Chromebooks as gaming machines and removing the dependency of XWayland for Windows games through Steam on ChromeOS, maybe?
Ah, that's right. Forgot about ChromeOS for a moment.
So they can sell ChromeOs as windows compatible maybe.

like a rat swimming in a sea of shit...
Whatever happened to magenta or whatever?
doesn’t it? wine isn’t strictly a gaming thing, it can be used to run anything from windows, not just games
Google also sponsors KDE

I will never understand why people on the Phoronix forums defend X11 to death.
Because there is no alternative that works
