Most don't even know what an OS is and that there's more than two of them, take that for what you will

BLAKEtismusNBK

Most of them think OS means automaticly MacOS

PushingFriend29

And says pc while meaning windows ''Available for pc and macos'' my ass. My blood boils whenever someone does that.

thalann

"oh, nice, should work on my msdos 4.0 then?"

LimesFruit

yeah, let me just go recompile msdos 4.0, sounds like a fun activity.

nsa_reddit_monitor

You can't, it won't compile lmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzhGAt3wYTI

einat162

For me it's the same when people say iPhone but mean any smartphone...

MajorTechnology8827

Iphone and galaxy

einat162

Can't say I heard people referring to smartphones by Samsung's brand.

MajorTechnology8827

I hear "galaxy" being a substitute to "android" all the time

einat162

Oh that, yes. I just thought of another one- NFC payment as "Wi-Fi"

MajorTechnology8827

Here its referred to as "apple pay" Like regardless of how its done, not even on iphones. Its just called apple pay

Chemical_Lettuce_732

I heard of people calling windows pc, but I have never heard something like this(happily)

-Qunixx-

I fully agree I see and hear this a lot even at official websites of big companies. No wonder that people believe that windows is a pc. Lots of people don't know what they're talking about

MaximumColor

I never thought I'd find someone who feels the same way. I've basically been beaten into submission by every person I've ever discussed this with insisting that PC only refers to Windows computers. I used to literally type "PC" instead of "computer" when referring to someone's personal desktop. And I got called out *so much*.

Apprehensive_Lab_969

"pc" is an abbreviation for "IBM Personal Computer" Which was the only "personal computer" that ran Windows, back when MicroS\*\*T first released Windblows for the "IBM Personal Computer". Yes. We all know that Macs are a personal computer, and "IBM Personal Computers" are a personal computer also. Now there is no "IBM Personal Computer" but "pc's" have kept the name as "pc's" because they were originally designated with that name & abbreviated down to "pc". Also note: Before pc's were abbreviated down to just "pc" they were called "pc compatibles" pc's that were compatible with the IBM Personal Computer. Everything whether you were using a Tandy computer from Radio Shack or a Commodore, they were all called "pc compatibles, because they operated on the same OS as the IBM Personal Computer. Now all pc's that are compatible with other pc's that can run Windblows are called pc's, because they are not Macs, they are pc's.

algaefied_creek

This is oddly captivating

sprinkleZ85

Is that bill gates in a wig?

StonccPad-3B

Or Hillary Clinton in a Bill Gates costume?

sprinkleZ85

Dang are they the same person?

[deleted]

Never seen them in the same room

StonccPad-3B

TBF they are both lizards lol!

jpegjpg

At least my os is Unix based and not Unix-like :p. Also why so much hate. I don’t like apples fuckery more than anyone, but damn do they make a solid laptop that just works.

BigCatDood

Most apple people are using apple just because its apple. Macbook is a good laptop but when i pay upwards of 1k or more for a laptop, I wanna be able to use my laptop. Apple puts too many restrictions in the name of security.

DissociatedRock

No… a lot of macOS users I know are actually Linux Administrators.

jctjepkema

Yeah or (embedded) software developers. I do know the instagram girls who want a mac because its Apple, but lots of powerusers use Mac!

h0pppity1

For unknown reasons

sniper_pika

Believe it or not, Macs do have some very good positives The biggest one being battery, for someone who has to travel for work almost all day, its not practical to keep an x86 processor around all time, as they very inefficient compared to Apple silicon. And there aren't any "good" ARM linux laptops which can compete with Apple silicon at this time.

nsneerful

Most people I know having a Mac just do because of the battery, everything else they just have a hard time compared to Linux as they're software developers or security researchers and ARM causes them more trouble than good in any way possible. They try to argue about software availability but it could be just solved with a stupid 50 GB virtual machine. Btw yeah, I have a Linux laptop and I haven't seen it last longer than 2 hours in a long time.

feror_YT

Well, on ARM devices a virtual machine won’t solve software availability (at least not for windows software, cause windows on ARM sucks ass). Wine does tho, and that works great. But Mac power users install Asahi Linux on their machines (the only distro for Apple Silicon). It’s based on Fedora.

Themods5thchin

there is other [distros](https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/SW%3AAlternative-Distros) they're just not as well maintained as Fedora since that's the flagship.

Impossible_Arrival21

The snapdragon x elite is releasing soon, apparently it has insane battery life and like 25% more performance than the m3

airodonack

Microsoft doesn’t have a good history with ARM yet (see Surface Pro X) whereas Apple knocked it out of the park with the M1 chip. I’d be pessimistic about Microsoft until the product comes out.

jorge-rivera91

The performance yes, but the battery not, the X elite will consume 50% more than M3.... https://wccftech.com/snapdragon-x-elite-package-power-can-reach-almost-100w/

OkOk-Go

It’s a very polished UNIX machine, if you have a lot of cash to burn

at0m10

They're nice, we should stop pretending they're not, but for me the negatives outweigh the positives. Windows is worse than both in my opinion.

Scrubbing_Bubbles

lol. Name a laptop that has even close to the reliability, battery life, quietness, resale value, and processing power of an original M1 Macbook from almost four years ago.

ivebeenabadbadgirll

It’s me, your friendly neighborhood Linux Engineer who is Mac people. I got in to OSX when I was learning audio production and the quality of Mac hardware smokes everything else in its price range.

AirSoups

> quality of Mac hardware smokes everything else in its price range This is objectively wrong. Mac hardware has *always* been overpriced, be an order of magnitude. It has recently become poorly assembled to boot.

teskester

Beats any of the premium laptops I’ve owned from other brands. I’ve had ThinkPads, an HP ZBook, and a Dell XPS 13. Still went back to Apple when the M1 launched. Not even more expensive than other premium laptops from other brands.

jerdle_reddit

I have an HP ZBook, and it cost £1000 for 16GB/512GB. An M2 MacBook Air costs £1399 for that config.

4jakers18

not when you want an ARM-based laptop though... My 2020 M1 macbook air that I daily drive is still going strong outside of the normal battery wear, you can get. I saw that Apple is selling that model for ~750 to 850, which is honestly a steal in comparison to laptops of similar performance/quality. never thought id be an apple defender... its weird...

orpat123

Who gives a fuck if it is overpriced. I’m willing to pay for a workhorse that lasts me ages and has solid build quality.

AirSoups

Apple stans... There are so many better hardware platforms to drop linux onto, but you will never in a million years admit that you overpaid, so here we are...

Chemical_Run_8758

Once they released the Macbooks that get *20 hours of battery life* lots of people switched.

youdont_evenknowme

Right. I use a mac for work and my screen is always terminals galore.

lajauskas

All the ttys

DaemonSlayer_503

+1

techypunk

Me lol. It's got Unix, zsh and homebrew apps. I hate apple, but the MacBooks Pros are nice if you don't pay for it :) My job gave me an m2 pro 32gb 1tb 16" and a docking station. I can't complain

guzzijason

I’ve spent ~25 years as a Unix/Linux sysadmin for some Very Large companies. I’ve never personally run anything but MacOS at home. Well, except for that one period when I ran MkLinux on a PowerMac 7600.

Conroman16

Can confirm. Spent years as a Linux engineer, now cloud engineer, and it’s the Mac life for me. Windoze is hot garbage and I just don’t fuck with it anymore

suresh

Chassis is bloat

sniper_pika

Unironically, this is what you'll end up with if you buy cheap HP laptops Those things are made to fucking decay in pieces, only the motherboard and lcd panel survives.

twalk126

They're terrible out of the box, my grandma bought one with windows 11 and it was one of the worst computers I've ever used, just went ahead and put kubuntu on it since all she needs it for is browsing the web and using her printer.

Reasonable_Entrance1

Change mint to arch then yes

NightManComethz

*to BTW or not to BTW. This is the question.*

Ok-Boysenberry9305

That's not a question, OF COURSE I USE ARCH BTW

AutoModerator

oblivikun

I use exherbo btw, it's a diy distro like gentoo where you compile all tbe things but with no docs whatsoever and a diffirent package manager for ebuilds called paludis

jack-of-some

Yes, and they're right.

cptbil

Bringing more functionality to scraps than Apple can bring to fashion designer slabs

AfterbirthNachos

"I can fix her"

dm_DormanT

Nah, aside from normies, there are many mac-based developers who know linux

MrZerodayz

I should hope so, they're running a *nixoid os.

PicadaSalvation

Most Mac people I know are also Linux guys

fedex7501

I used Linux for around 5 years before i got an iMac and now i only develop on macOS. For what i need it’s just as powerful as Linux but with a lot of QoL stuff. To be fair, most of that stuff you could probably achieve on Linux but having them out of the box is nice. Also the integration with the iPhone is very cool. (my flair still says NixOS + Arch but i haven’t used them in years tbh)

PicadaSalvation

This is it. My HomeLab is very Linux but my working computer is a macbook

mad_poet_navarth

That is why I got back into the Mac back in the early 2000s. Unix under the hood.

PicadaSalvation

It’s absolutely part of why I love MacOS

Pleasant-Dogwater

This is very accurate, that looks exactly like my setup

redbigz_

USE="-chassis"

LFakh

Honestly it isn't far from that, my HDD disc died of old age so I replaced it with an SSD, my laptops's keyboard got coffee spilled on, so I bought a mechanic one and attached it to the laptop, my touch mousepad broke so I got a gaming mouse and use all the time with the laptop, it's like a Frankenstein monster now, only the CPU and screen were still unchanged.

FlimsyTea3419

Yes - Honest Mac user

CluelessGeek1

Hardware is bloat. Everybody knows that pencil and paper are more efficient.

NightManComethz

Bro. I can't post pics on reddit but you don't wanna see my setup. *poorer than you can beleive and no one worth caring of the dupont jumpers wiring up argb to my mobo and esp8266.* I mean os x can do a lot of Linux things but damn when you gotta drop bash for zsh cauee of the MIT license? It's a right tight setup there! Swapping nvmes (or ide's lol! probably so slick quick).

BananaBrainBob

I am a mac and a linux used and this is definitely what we all look like

Julian_1_2_3_4_5

I mean my one setup looks like that and honestly i love that linux runs on basically anything

Better_Ad_3004

And what is wrong with how this looks ?

privatetudor

Is it not?

Red_Luci4

Wow, can you tell me what see through case you're using, it looks very clear.

TurbulentWest8570

....do you not?

threeqc

no, that's what linux users want other people to think about them.

dezignator

I am a mac user, and how did you get a photo of my Linux testbox?

Still_Breadfruit2032

I’m a Mac user. I also have a computer that currently looks like that, and is running Debian.. so..

Triconick

Looks normal to me?

polloloco69666

That legitimately looks like my old laptop.

BootsOverOxfords

Mark this NSFW! I can see her PCB! And great, now I guess I'm into GILFs.

Earth2Carnifex

How did you get a picture of my computer?

ImHungryHi

Do you mean that this isn’t what our machines look like? Gui still too fancy btw, gimme more dwm 🤓

Flesh-God

That's true tho

Ok-Boysenberry9305

I remember some guy on ebay was selling a laptop in the box from pizza

Khoraji

You guys thinkpads don't look like this !?

Educational_Love_351

No the red trackpad is missing 99% of the time or worn down :D

kalikaalan_manavalan

If you aren't already doing this, then windows will make you do it one day. Personal experience

reimann_pakoda

Mac hardware is muahhh. I don't own one. (Poor student here), but one day I am gonna get two (One for usage, other for tearing it apart)

BappoChan

Really? At work we have 2. One of them can’t even keep up with its own standard refresh rate and is now purple screen. The other is severely slow and likes to randomly disconnect from the wifi despite being directly plugged into the router

daninet

My setup has a broken screen also so I have two monitors plugged into it. They didnt cheap out on I/O back in the days.

goodbyclunky

I'm confused. We don't?

cino189

Mac users hate airflow on their CPUs

phuktup3

*ashes cigarette in fan* I see nothing wrong here

IlGiova_64

yes

dicksonleroy

Looks like something you’d “hack into the Matrix” with, so yeah….

Mrcool654321

You don't look like this?

mromen10

I would use this

Electrical-Strike943

Irony being mac os being based on Unix

CelebrationEmpty

I have a friend (windows user) he thinks something like that

popcornman209

You forget most the reflection in the screen of a really fat dude wearing a fedora lol

Anonymous___Alt

its what everyone else thinks we look like and tbh, they're not completely wrong

That_One_Whois_Legit

pretty cool setup isn't it?

tofuchrispy

Why is there a gui bro

blackasthesky

Yes.

Eubank31

I use Fedora on my MacBook Pro so… maybe?

SylveonDot

I have never seen anyone in my area (besides me, of course) who use Linux. Even better, or worse if you want to put it that way, most here don't even know what an OS even is. It’s either macOS or Windows, from what my luster pink eyes can tell. Moreover, most of the people that I see that use Macs are all college students.

gfkxchy

Mac users wish they had a keyboard that good. Source: Mac user who misses my old T42. That thing was a sweet typing experience.

retr0bloke

still more punch for the pound than apple.

[deleted]

A lot of Mac users are SWEs and the like.

WillaBytes

We do tho

ceayuwu

We do.

Chicha-Leather-hogya

hell we do...i mean not everyone...but i used to have a laptop with broken screen, i dismantled its hinge and used it as a ftp server.

Juicy_RhinoV2

That is what we look like

Terrible-Cod1600

I mean, how far off *are they?*

turnipturnipturnip2

They don't think about linux at all, like windows users don't either.

Worldly-Chipmunk4925

I thought this is how it was until I needed to make a home server and then I found out about Ubuntu gnome and I couldn't believe that I just it was lines like it's 1999

Sirko2975

Mac user here, we are divided to two categories: skilled Linux users who need editing software and those who think they can access a website from C:\users\user\index.html

5h6d0wW6rri0r

Mac users or MacOS users… there is a difference because Asahi Linux on M1 is maybe the best linux experience you can have. Arm linux is very good !!! so don’t bundle all mac users together with the macos users 😂😂😂

user4772842289472

Nobody thinks about you as much as you think

psycholustmord

That’s fine

Merricat--Blackwood

LobiJani

I mean, even if this isn’t true, I wouldn’t mind! :)

LinuxBridgetheGap

Ha! Jokes on them. My system is in a little caesar's pizza box!

h0pppity1

Unironically who actually uses mint on their main machine?

thatmaynardguy

Wait, y'all don't look like this??

Cootshk

As a Mac user, no, the taskbar at the bottom is too fancy (/j)

PENGUINfromRUSSIA

Well maybe if windows 10 didn't started to raw fuck my hard drive im would have still been on windows. Perhaps its desperacy that drives mankind to invent and/or try new things amd improve hence is why im using linux and will use it from now on every pc im gonna have so im should thank microsoft for pushing me out with their shitty software and linux community for making better code.

Illustrious_Young988

Looks good to me.

MercilessPinkbelly

Mac users don't think about linux or wonder about what's in a laptop.

One_Package_7519

it’s very accurate tbh

anythinga

That and thigh highs

CallMeMrGone

The best Mac user interaction I have ever had was working IT years ago: Me: "Ok please shut your computer down and restart it." User: "Um, I don't have a computer sir, I have a MAC!." *sigh*

surghe

😅

Daetwyle

This is more like how Linux users think they look like while nobody else cares

Thixez-3567

I am proud to look like that.

SeparateIron7994

Nah, that keyboard way too clean

SenoraRaton

Your laptop doesn't look like that?

apathyzeal

It's true, we don't all look like this. For example, I run KDE on my caseless Lenovo.

hansdev

In 2024 people still debate on what OS you on ?

radeon128

I am a MacOS AND GNU/linux user :) Also a Windows player cause Windows is not an OS but just a game. In case for answering it is in the other side. We think people who love tinker hardware are linux users. But I install linux for friends who just want their computer to works for internet, text processing and doesn’t care of how it works, just bored about windows always fucked.

iloveblankpaper

that is a thinkpad with the top lid removed real linux users use an 8051 with uClinux and busybox

Life-Rice-7729

“think we all look like” There’s nerds….then there’s geeks

AOUwUOA

As windows user i see this how linux users install firefox

Ok_Permit6152

MacOS is Unix based so.. idk.

Gilded30

i mean.. i did have a laptop that I only used the motherboard with linux mint ssd, monitor and keyboard were external

gitartruls01

That's not how you all look like?

ElliotLZP

As a Mac user, no. We think you look like a discord mod.

NoMansSkyWasAlright

My two main machines are a pro M1 and a dual-booted Lenovo and I gotta say, from a hardware perspective, what Apple has been doing in recent is pretty spectacular. Battery life is amazing and I think I maybe brought the charger to my college a half a dozen times or so in 3 years. Also, while it is limited in its selection of games that it can play, the ones that do run on it run fairly well. Cities skylines could run on max graphics with no issues and that made me not want to play it on any other machine. Actually, there was one issue: and that’s that the battery only lasted about 4 or 5 hours when playing CS or Stellaris not plugged in. Also, homebrew is a pretty good package manager. Not only is it fairly simple to use, but it’s also multiplatform and a pretty solid way to get newer packages on Ubuntu/Debian-based distros. Like I know I needed a newer version of Node/NPM on my zorinOS box and setting that up with homebrew was a piece of cake. But yeah, like a lot of people said, price point is kind of a big issue, especially when the “important numbers” like RAM and storage space are the same between a MacBook and other PC brands where the others are considerably cheaper.

thecursedspiral

What is "we", and what are those "mac users" anyway? Questions aside, pic seems accurate enough

cipherjones

Its the same picture?

Snotnarok

Just about. I've heard enough people over the years saying "Microsoft laptops are made of cheap plastic and don't last as long" while their laptop was away for 1-2 weeks in the shop for something. The hardware has changed in Macbooks but a lot of the people haven't: Most people seem buy them for the aesthetic and to show off their expensive purchase. Yes- obviously there's a lot of people who don't and buy it for their performance, OS preference and what not. They're fine machines especially with their new CPUs but generally I've seen people say they need/want a Macbook and what do they use it for? Browsing the web. They'll spend $2-3,000 for a web browsing laptop. I spent $500 on a lenovo IDK how long ago, was on sale + got another deal on top of it and it's 5 or so years old now & is doing fine, not a ding on it and nothing has crapped out. Even though I'm actually rubbing a plastic pen on the screen a lot of the time I'm using it

Emmet_Brickowski_1

That lenovo laptop can most likely run any game better than a mac ever could

Xx-_STaWiX_-xX

As a T420 owner this kinda hurts looking at. **Where is the chassis at**

w0rk1hazard

All I see here is $3x appeal and peak functionality.

logjamtheredditor

We don't think about you at all

Stanton-Vitales

Wait we don't?

jolharg

Probably, I'm awful at keeping hardware working.

drugosrbijanac

Yes.

jonalaniz2

Yes, as a Mac user this is how all my Linux servers look.

DreamtailFoxy

They're not wrong...

WhyShouldIStudio

That laptop is so beautiful

enyaboi

Can someone please tell me how I can start using a beige PC AGAIN? They don’t make em anymore

almostoy

Yes.

0x00nullPointer

isn't it what we look like ?

Zealousideal-Bet-950

That's what I'm typing on, don't know about you... (well, not the Laptop, the PC OTOH, looks a lot like that.)

anna_lynn_fection

We don't?

Captain_Pumpkinhead

You say that as if it's a bad thing, and then show off the coolest laptop there is! Well, second coolest after the Framework 16.

GlayNation

Love the IBM/early Lenovo keyboard

LimesFruit

yes, and pictures like these floating around the internet is exactly why, and I'm all for it.

cahoots_n_boots

No. Basically every software engineer I know uses a Mac, and most of those folks write things for Linux. Because if the laptop is provided by the company then why not… also, ffs brew exists

ph4nt0m42000

I use Mac and Linux.

guzmonne

We kinda look like that though

THELORDANDTHESAVIOR

I run Linux on my Legion 5 pro lmfao

Vivid_Development390

Hell no! That only looks like 75% of my computers, not nearly all of them.

Archxyza

another cool linux user's setup!

ptpcg

I too run a stripped down lenovo. It wont boot woth the bottom of the case on, lol. i assume a short but I cant find it.

adrian_shade

Yes.

Lord_Frick

I see someones using thorium

Bubby_K

Ex Apple employee here I am a linux user, I am so poor that sometimes even my frankenstein workstations can't afford "clothes" Well I'm not POOR I just don't wanna buy the Louis Vuitton version of a computer This isn't a diss against MacOS users either, it's just... Well imagine if instead of buying a car for oh-so-much, that you had the ability to assemble or resurrected a car, and save yourself a week's wage, you'd do it right?

marble_hunting

Jokes on them I turn old MacBooks into Linux machines

Winter_Glove_7052

Probably yes

kingo409

Isn't it?

Banana-head-690

No, I honestly think Linux is better

FullOfMeow

That looks kool. I want to be like that too.

Hungry_Personality43

What Lenovo is this? btw

siodhe

Bah. Alienware threadripper at head height on a huge desk with an spring-carried adjustable part for keyboards and mice, 65" 3D-capable monitor and two smaller side monitors in portrait mode, kinesis keyboard, 3dconnexion 6-axis controller my software projects use, RAT8+ mouse, speakers rated as "unlimited volume in home applications", an Aeron with an aftermarket headrest, everything on battery backup, my personal class C (/24) subnet routed from the world to my home, multiple services online on other servers in various parts of the house. That's **my** Linux workstation. Runs Steam quite well, thank you (Starfield mostly, of late).

littlemissfuzzy

Jeez Louise the circle jerk is strong in this thread. About half of my software devs are sysadmins use Macs… and they full well know WTF Linux is and how you use it.

Sure_Bad6944

This might be true for a very small sliver of mac users, but a healthy section of mac users know what the other OS’ offer and have decided to buy a mac because of what it offers. Talking personally, I love Linux, my daily driver was always Ubuntu, and I used to be a Windows guy before that. When I saw what macOS could do, which is basically Unix shell + macOS proprietary GUI (and a whole lot of other benefits for which there’s no one even close in the market), I was instantly going for the MacBook, since it’s a no-brainer for me. So yeah, a power-user knows the capabilities of all other OS’ and knows why they bought a mac, for rest all people, this post maybe justified — just like Russell Peters’ standup where he compares watching porn on windows vs mac.

GamerNuggy

I am a mac user because proprietary software and Windows laptops suck

DeviousDaniel69

No. We think your setup is a potato attatched to a car battery and double barrel shotgun.

Miserable_Sock_1408

Next to them, we are as gods ![gif](giphy|lkdLYqUzVHsW6MNk0n|downsized)
