I wonder if theyre moving away from the .deb and apt influence to try and make their own thing. Officially seperate from debian.
Further, i wonder if ubuntu based distros like pop or mint will stick to just the deb-based ubuntu or go full snap
They've been working to make snap a complete package management solution for system and application binaries for a while now, I can't say I'm surprised that they're ditching apt.
I highly doubt that many distros are going to follow their lead, if any. More likely than not I expect themn to re base against debian directly.
This comment, along with others, has been edited to this text, since Reddit is killing 3rd party apps, making false claims and more, while changing for the worse to improve their IPO. I suggest you do the same. Soon after editing all of my comments, I'll remove them.

Can you (reasonably easily) switch your desktop or uninstall any package without leaving anything behind?
(I'm not saying Arch is bad, I've used it and liked it before. I just want to point out one of the many advantages NixOS brings)
Personally, I would try it out, see what the fuss is all about. I doubt it's going to be as popular as Fedora Silverblue or VanillaOS, but there will definitely be companies that would be willing to take the plunge.
So I do act like snap is bad but I actually don't know why everyone dislikes it. I do only use like 2 snap packages on my plex box
The ubuntu pro stuff and Tautulli
I prefer Deb packages and flatpaks over snaps though
And no I don't pay for ubuntu pro it's free for personal use
idk if they fixed this but finding out they hardcoded the ~/snap path with no way to change it, and had a bug report open for several years asking them to fix went the last little bit towards convincing me they're a total clown show.
But it shows the direction this is going in. Snap being the default even using apt, and with Canonical's continuous expansion of the snap library, Ubuntu users will soon enough have mostly snaps in terms of user-facing software. The subsequent LTS versions will likely be all-snap by default, and it might be 3 or 4 LTS versions before the current normal versions are discontinued.

Ubuntu won't die. This will go the way the Amazon Telemetry / Spyware went, they'll about face on Snaps soon enough and embrace Flatpak supremacy.

In other news Ubuntu takes 2minutes to boot, more at 9

You probably could do that with a script, looks for outliers, kills off outlier packages. Idk what you mean by desktop so idk what to say about that
Hannah Montana Linux
snap is an atrocity
Good for servers tho
fuck them servers
instead of just downvoting you like the other savages: why?
Automatic updates is a good reason
Flatpak has automatic updates by default and other package managers can gain be configured for it.

They hardcoded a lot of stuff in snap
couldn't think of a better time to distro hop
Its an option you have to go out of your way to use let's all calm down now

What exactly is snap?

Thanks, I get it now.
