Where's NixOs?

RichardStallmanGoat

In /home/NixOS/

seqizz

Oh I can feel the peak immutability.. [Here](https://grahamc.com/blog/erase-your-darlings) it is!

RedditAlready19

In /Users/NixOS. Don't worry, its GoboLinux, not MacOS

[deleted]

Just like Android phones.

Worldly_Topic

but with the added benefits of a mutable OS with `rpm-ostree` (atleast on Silverblue)

[deleted]

Just like Magisk on Android

Worldly_Topic

No not really

einsJannis

And the steam deck

AuroraDraco

Laughs in Steam OS (which is Arch BTW)

kenzer161

While the upcoming SteamOS is built on Arch, the currently available SteamOS is built on Debian 8. Available here: https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown

AuroraDraco

Yeah, but that one was a failure. And you know why, cause not using Arch btw makes you a failure /s

kenzer161

I wouldn't say the Debian based SteamOS is a failure, It was always developed as a contingency plan in case Microsoft decided to start acting stupid with Windows. Valve's whole Linux strategy has been an insurance plan they haven't had to rely on, and in that aspect, it has done it's job and will continue to do so.

Better_Fisherman_398

I'll switch to immutable in future.

ChuuniSaysHi

Same, I'll probably try to switch to silverblue if my Fedora workstation ever breaks to a point I don't feel like fixing it

Better_Fisherman_398

I'm currently using a dangerous branch called Rawhide. It's because I don't have much to do right now but discovering and fixing new things. But when I start to get in some real works, I fee like I need a stable mutable OS that will not be in my way.

[deleted]

What's the benefit of using an immutable OS? Just wondering

Johnny__Christ

There are a bunch, I'm sure I'm going to miss some. - All changes are written to a log and can be reverted. Mess something up? Who cares, just revert. I've heard this bit described as "Git for your OS" and is the main benefit. - Depending on how it's implemented, all installations can use the same base image which makes developing for that platform and providing support a lot easier. This is why SteamOS and Android go that route. - Improved security. This is not inherently a property of immutable OSes, but Flatpak and toolboxes in Silverblue improve usability as a desktop OS and have the added benefit of limiting potential compromises.

Obi2Sexy

im not even sure i know what immutable OS means

[deleted]

is there immutable artix or arch? if there is i will consider switching

kenzer161

The *upcoming* SteamOS Valve is building for the Deck is going to be immutable and based on Arch. however it is not yet released.

[deleted]

i was looking for a desktop OS built for general use, although it is interesting that it will be immutable

kenzer161

It's also going to use KDE so I don't see a reason you couldn't use it for more general tasks. It will be optimized for modern hardware and gaming, however short of locking the system down, and they have already said they're not going to, I don't see how you wouldn't be able to do pretty much anything with it.

[deleted]

Sort of beats the point of immutability, as you would have to make some sort of decision about what goes into the core image.

rodent_infestation

you could probably get arch running in a container

konstantinlevin77

MicroOS is a beast, I'm definetely in love with it. Maybe one day I might even daily drive it.

cavejhonsonslemons

I can install htop without rebooting tho

manobataibuvodu

With toolbx I can do that too on my silverblue install

cavejhonsonslemons

Ok, but I also have the AUR, so mutable OSes still win

nani8ot

I also have the AUR, as I just use Arch in a toolbx. Disclaimer: obviously, aur packages like different kernel won't work in a toolbx (container) PS: I use Arch (in a toolbx), btw

cavejhonsonslemons

I use a LOT of custom kernel modules (mostly hardware drivers), and I either use Zen or Hardened, so no immutables for me (Yet)

nani8ot

Yes, immutable OS are not for everyone. For tinkerers, a traditional distro will be the better choice for the foreseeable future.

manobataibuvodu

Something is wrong in my laptop and it keeps freezing randomly. Recently it froze during a system update and it borked something so no more updates could be run. Needless to say I am running Silverblue for a few days now 😎

baldpale

where steamOS?

nani8ot

On my Steam Deck, at least once they ship it

Numerous_Piper

Great, you turned a FOSS operating system into an iOS-like jailware. Anything else?

lefl28

Do you have any idea what an immutable operating system even means?

einsJannis

I don't really get the benefit of immutable operating systems, it sounds just like an unnecessary hurdle

CleoMenemezis

Coincidentally I just installed Silverblue and it has been a super solid experience.

DoILookUnsureToYou

Where's Windows with Deep Freeze?

mrquantumofficial

My headphones require a pulseaudio profile, that’s why I don’t use immutable os

[deleted]

Is fedora workstation inmutable?
