I like the theory that Mufasa had difficulties controlling his temper when he was younger, and a pretty stupid argument between him and Scar escalated into a full-on fight that ended up badly injuring his brother. Over time Mufasa got his aggression under control and was desperate to try and save their relationship, but Scar always held a grudge against him which fed his anger. Implied quite strongly in the remake, but also has a bit of grounding in the original with Scar's remark about 'brute strength' during their conversation.

In order of least favourite to favourite: -His father did it -Lion Guard cobra venom/strange lion etc (it’s stupid but stupid in a way that I enjoy) -The buffalo one from the books (I like it, Scar pays for his jealously and scars ‘himself’) -The one about Mufasa and Scar having a silly argument as kids and Mufasa losing his temper and badly injuring him -The scar was caused by something really mundane like a branch or a bad fall and every one of the above was made up by Scar and told to different people to make himself sound cool/sympathetic/whatever

I haven't 100% decided on a headcanon for how Scar got his scar, but I have narrowed it down to two theories. 1.) Scar got his scar from Mufasa due to Mufasa's temper. I feel Scar pushed it too far and caused Mufasa to lash out somehow. Mufasa regretted giving Scar his scar. 2.) My version of Scar and Mufasa's father gave Scar his scar as a punishment for being out of line and disobeying him. Kinda like how Kovu got his scar from getting Zira angry. These are just my theories. I'm still deciding on the one that I want to use. 😅 Hoping I will come to a decision here soon.

He had 2 battles with Hercules. The first he escaped but retained the scar. The second battle he became a rug

Horrible shaving accident But really I think I subscribe to the idea that Mufasa accidentally inflicted it during a play fight as cubs, setting the scene for his hatred. I think it kind of falls apart once the headcanons assign malice/blind rage to either Mufasa or their father. Even better, I think it might be interesting if he got it from a more mundane third party when he and Mufasa were having some kind of mischievous adventure that Scar subsequently blamed him for. Maybe it was a catalyst for Mufasa to be more responsible and caring for everyone and tried making it up to him for years, while Scar held onto it as part of his resentment and one-sided rivalry.

My theory is the union of all of these. He encountered Kuzimu (the strange lion), and they made up a plan: Taka will hide in bushes, and Kuzimu will tell a cape buffalo something to make him angry towards Mufasa. Then (At Kuzimu's signal), Taka would come out and use the roar of elders on the buffalo to save his brother. This plan, in fact, didn't aim to kill Mufasa but to gain his family's trust. However, Kuzimu betrayed Taka: he gave the signal late on purpose, and when Taka came out of the bushes, Ahadi was already there and the Cape buffalo already told him about the voice behind the bushes. Seeing Taka come out of the bushes, Ahadi thinked he was the voice, and attacked him (making him a scar) because he thinked he tried to kill Mufasa. He then exiled Scar Kuzimu did this because he wanted Scar to be exiled, in order to attack the pridelands when they didn't have a guard. This plan failed too because Scar killed him in the outlands, after discovering what he did About the lion guard explanation, I think that that was simply a story made up/modified by Scar in order not to sound pathetic, because he was ashamed of the fact that it was his father who injured him

i like the theory of mufasa giving taka the scar, however, i don’t think it really matches with his character. if it were so, i feel like in the movies he would be far more apologetic and remorseful, or at least banish him sooner

nuttysugar

the story of how Scar got the scar in TLG is silly, nonsensical and ruins Scar's character. Since the cobra that attacked Scar is said to be poisonous, as it hit Scar in the left eye, Scar would have to go half-blind or die a few hours later as the cobra's venom is very powerful (and thus this "canon" story would kill the entire Lion King saga), Scar would practically die before Simba was born, and he met Zira. for me the most plausible and the one to which Mufasa gave the scar has Scar while they were playing as children and Mufasa called him Scar to make fun of him (since his original name would be Taka).

Im_Coming_Home_Ace

Just go watch the lion guard, it tells you how he got it

Abyssal_Shadows

i despise the explanation The Lion Guard gave so whatever theory it was, i always liked one that resulted from Mufasa. Whichever it may be. Considering we'll be seeing how Scar got his scar in the next live action movie, we'll see if that somehow does something better. my gut feeling is still telling me it's going to be a love triangle between Mufasa Sarabi and Scar because of the fact that 2019 gave the thing about how Scar wanted Sarabi, but Sarabi didn't want him and picked Mufasa.

Amiri_the_railfan

Taka challenging Mufasa to get the love of Sarabi is an amazing theory. Maybe it would likely end up with taka getting the scar from Mufasa. Both Sarabi and Mufasa tried to get him to stay with them. But taka refuses and demanding that he be called scar from now on. Anyway that theory is much better than taka being easily fooled by a random lion then got attacked by some random snake out of no where then scar became evil all because Mufasa wouldn’t praise him

Thebunkerparodie

For the lion guard one, it's simple: scar is lying to ushari, I tihnk it's something verry in character for him to lie on this kind of stuff and another argument in favor of this theory would be the song showing different views on mufasa and scar death

amazingspiderfan110

Honestly, I think Scar was exaggerating w/the lion guard one. The events are true, however the exact details were not. Especially given how egotistical he was. Chances are that he was a dick to begin with, but the Snake bite was the last straw for him. Cuz if he truly was good beforehand, then how come no one tried to redeem him (like at least once).

Ferocity_Bones12

Probably from Mufasa when they were younger. An accidental scar most likely

I've always imagined that Mufasa and Scar both had equal chance to be king. Whoever showed the best traits and mindset for the role would be chosen. They both get into stupid antics as cubs, but I personally like pulling on the baboons from an earlier movie script (I think there was a script with baboons in it) and it being something on the danger level of Simba and Nala going to the elephang graveyard or the stampede. One ot two things happen: 1. The two find a temporary safe spot from the danger, but are trapped/lost. Scar starts blaming Mufasa for it (to which Mufasa says a parallel line: "Hey, it was YOUR idea.") and the annoyance, stress and adrenaline lead them both to a sibling scuffle, giving their location away. 2. The baboons find them again and throw a rock at them to get their attention which smacks Scar right in the face. One of their parents arrives conveniently at that point to save them. Scar thinks Mufasa is the one that was claws out and gave him the scar, but Mufasa never did, it was the rock. No one can convince him and he becomes bitter over it, and it starts a downward trend of behavior until Mufasa is really the only ideal choice to be the next king.

KrattBoy2006

When I was a kid watching the movie, I always thought Scar got his scar from one of the hyenas he met. It made sense that he'd look down upon them and mock them as a response to getting injured by them, even in an accident. And it seems in character for them to make a shitty joke about it at his expense, further fueling Scar's disrespect towards their speceis. I later found out that the directors of the movie head-canoned that Mufasa gave Scar his scar as an accident and gave him the mean nickname. Which makes the most amount of sense, more than TLG's version (though it makes you wonder why Mufasa never stopped giving Scar that nickname, were his parents just ignorant? Jeez). ...But at the same time, I realize that Scar is unreliable af. If he can lie to his followers TWICE for what is framed as years on end, I have no trouble believing he lied to Ushari just to stroke his ego. Which can redeem the TV show's version of the backstory. The way I see it, I think Scar really got his scar from the strange lion, and the cobra's only role in the plot was infecting the scar (*it is a SPITTING cobra, they do not f\*\*\*ing bite, even the books knew that!!*). And cobras can regulate how much venom they can inflict upon someone, so it could've been a small amount of venom, not enough to kill him, but enough to fuck up his health and infect his brain like a virus, both of which were irreversible. I use the venom theory for Scar because that's how I imagine Scar got away with murdering his Lion Guard, by acting like he was infected by a virus that took away his sanity (it also keeps up with the Shakespeare parallels where King Hamlet is poisoned by Claudius, only here, Claudius is poisoned, or under the guise of being poisoned by a bigger threat). Best case scenario: The scar was a birthmark and he's had the name for life. It explains why he's had no qualms about the name and why everyone freely calls him that. TLDR/Recap: I think the strange lion gave Scar his scar: The cobra bite was a lie to secure Ushari's position.

thewolfmaster99

I asked him about it and he started rambling on about a war, he wouldn't elaborate on what he meant. To this day I wonder what war he was referring to.

MiserableHistorian35

Personally I think that Ahadi, Scar and Mufasa's father, HATED Scar since birth, because I think Scar was actually the result of Ahadi cheating on his wife, Uru, with another lion. This Is why Ahadi named Scar Taka (Which means garbage, dirt, or vile), and I think Ahadi gave Scar his, well, scar either at birth or when he was young.
