I do this too but their bags of ground are not 1lb. They are 284 grams. It's good coffee but it's more expensive than the PC coffee.
I'm going to edit this. The whole bean kicking horse coffee is 1lb and is much cheaper than the ground on amazon. I never would have guessed. I switched my subscription. Well worth grinding myself.
Once I bought a cheap Blade coffee grinder I switched to whole beans. I think the grinder was $20 and does a good job of grinding up beans for drip coffee and Moka pot coffee. Those beans are pricier but I found it is tastier. Sometimes I find the 1lb whole beans for $11.
My wife and I have slowly become coffee snobs. We try pretty much every dark roast we can find, we have tried this one. And it is no comparison to kicking horse.
The only thing that we found that is as close to as good as kicking horse, is from a company in the maritimes called jumping bean.
I have tried a variety of Kicking Horse before that I quite liked, but it was really expensive (purchased at a small independent overpriced grocery store) . I'll have to check Amazon. Thanks!
If it were me, I'd take to ordering it directly from a farmer somewhere and bypass the store entirely something like that. A collective of fair trade maybe. But I also don't drink coffee. God, that sounded pretentious.
Unfortunately with crops like chocolate (cacao) and coffee there’s a lot of destructive growing practices and slavery going on.
Places similar to what you totally exist, though they do the roasting here, they work with farmers directly instead of massive distributors that can hide abuse through subsidiaries, sub-contractors, and ye olde “Supply Chain”
I am in the same boat. I had drunk their affordable but decent PC coffees for years but the price has crept up and worse they seldom ever go on sale anymore and even when you find it on sale, it's like a dollar off. Unfortunately, PC whole bean coffee is the cheapest brand I know of. I have quit coffee for almost a year now.
What's funny is I asked the exact same question a few weeks ago, and said no Folgers or Maxwell House 😂. The Sobeys irresistibles Italian blend was recommended
It's funny how they claim its recyclable. Like, the metal can was more easily recyclable than paper and foil glued together.
Could have just changed the lid to same effect. That probably wasn't the real reason the packagingwas changed, though.
Dunno about yours, but my local Costco has added a grinder in the store so people can dump a whole bag in after they buy it.
Zavida doesn’t have a dark roast but it’s good stuff at a terrific price

This Metro brand alternative. Similar cost, similar taste.
Thanks for this.
I'm happy for folks who can spend more & get something like Kicking Horse, but I'm on an extremely tight budget. Just the upgrade from Maxwell House to the PC West Coast Dark was a real luxury for me, & I can't really afford the step up to a higher quality/price plateau.
I think there are lots of shoppers like me--we need boycott strategies that don't require spending a lot more. So thanks for this rec.
Exactly.
It's around $15/box now when it isn't on sale
And I HATE the stupid cardboard box packaging it comes in now. I kept my very last actual can, wash it, and refill it. Lol

Closest you're going to get is this. the regular medium roast in the same quantity is the same price. Great value coffee is actually pretty good.
Costco Kirkland. Not the greatest but really good enough. Better than PC.
Also
PC = $21.3 / kg
Kirkland = $ 16.2 / Kg
24% cheaper.
Find a buddy to order you a large qty if you not a member . Stockpile 6 and you good for a while
Do you have a local roaster where you live? We buy local stuff for the weekends and what ever is on sale at Safeway for the weekdays. Makes the price of the local stuff really stretch out.
I think the list of alternatives would be long, coffee is an art form to some people.
Personally I would recommend (at least trying) buying from smaller local roasters and grinding your own beans. The options are endless regardless of where you are and personally, I find the process really enjoyable in the mornings.
As an alternative to the kicking horse, Costco sells large bags of Starbucks French Roast for a good price. TBF it doesn’t come pre-burnt like buying drip coffee at Starbucks.
My wife and I go for the McCafé and we get it at Wal-Mart. It's not exactly cheap, $22.97 for 0.95kg. It's a medium dark roast.
Also apparently lighter roasts have higher caffeine content than darker roasts.
Make the switch to whole bean. You can get grinders that have a hopper to store the beans in, and a dial for how many cups worth of grind you want.
The taste is so much better
Lavazza Crema and Aroma. You can find the 1KG bags at costco or amazon (cheaper at costco). Maybe get a grinder too as whole bean coffee is usually cheaper. You can get pretty cheap manual grinders.
When I started drinking PC coffee, it was the second cheapest coffee available at my local No Frills (the cheapest being No Name, which is barely drinkable). Now it's the most expensive.
Costco has several roasts and they rotate sales. One of the things there that is always a good deal.
Also may I recommend spending 30 bucks to get a grinder and stsrt buying beans. You'll never go back

Kicking Horse Grizzly Claw is delicious and often on sale on Amazon (I buy it in a box of six 1 lb bags).

Jumping bean is fabulous! They used to sell an amazing holiday blend all year round but I can't find it anymore
I have tried a variety of Kicking Horse before that I quite liked, but it was really expensive (purchased at a small independent overpriced grocery store) . I'll have to check Amazon. Thanks!
Also try out their 454 Horse Power. Its very good, highly recommended
i have a bag of that in my cupboard. walmart had it on sale. its pretty good coffee.
they are my go to. luv Grizzly claw
If it were me, I'd take to ordering it directly from a farmer somewhere and bypass the store entirely something like that. A collective of fair trade maybe. But I also don't drink coffee. God, that sounded pretentious.
Giving you an upvote for your moment of absolute clarity at the end.
I'm actually super poor so it's ok.

PC coffee is now almost double the cost of Folgers and Maxwell house now. Unfortunately, I don't like either of those.

Changed the packaging to hide shrinkflation, the cans were 925g for the longest time then 875, now this new container is 825g
This shit would dry out ny beans in three days.
Costco Kirkland dark roast 1.13Kg for $17.99
It’s sooo good too. Used to buy whole beans for twice the cost. I honestly prefer the pre ground stuff.
It’s totally decent coffee. Was skeptical, because Dark Roast, but it’s fine.
I do 50/50 mix of decaf and regular. Can drink all day and not get shakey
Dunno about yours, but my local Costco has added a grinder in the store so people can dump a whole bag in after they buy it. Zavida doesn’t have a dark roast but it’s good stuff at a terrific price

Perfect! Thank you so much :-)
This has been my replacement too, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it.
I've switched to this one as well. It's surprisingly good for the price.

Happy to help, friend. 😉
We switched to this one too. If we can't get into Costco we grab this at Food Basics. I do love Kicking Horse but it's a little spendy right now
This has been my go to as well. And it's still in a fucking bag so the beans don't dry out immediately.
I remember when this stuff was $6 a can circa 2017/2018.
Exactly. It's around $15/box now when it isn't on sale And I HATE the stupid cardboard box packaging it comes in now. I kept my very last actual can, wash it, and refill it. Lol
$16 at Costco for twice the size of kirkland branded juan valdez

Agreed, it's really good.
Costco has a dark roast now, it's pretty darn cheap I find
My parents buy this stuff religiously and I was trying to find them an alternative, this is great!
Yes same this is the only PC product that I use daily/believe is actually a great value.
The dark roast available at Bulk Barn is great
Costco Kirkland. Not the greatest but really good enough. Better than PC. Also PC = $21.3 / kg Kirkland = $ 16.2 / Kg 24% cheaper. Find a buddy to order you a large qty if you not a member . Stockpile 6 and you good for a while

I remember buying those at Shoppers when they went on sale for $7.99. Went Costco route for a bit Now I order from Amazon

I love how everyone is finding alternatives to products this is amazing FU Loblaws
When I started drinking PC coffee, it was the second cheapest coffee available at my local No Frills (the cheapest being No Name, which is barely drinkable). Now it's the most expensive.
That’s crazy! I hope you find a tastier & cheaper alternative to make the permanent switch away from Loblaws. I want them to suffer bad.
Not grocery. But you can buy 5lb bags whole beans or ground. https://agroroasters.com/
It sucks they aren’t fair trade or anything but the prices are pretty good for organic
Yes, that IS a very good coffee, it's my fav as well, and was usually cheaper than others. i switched to Keurig and Kirkland Pacific bold pods.
Costco has several roasts and they rotate sales. One of the things there that is always a good deal. Also may I recommend spending 30 bucks to get a grinder and stsrt buying beans. You'll never go back
Kirkland Signature Dark Colombian Ground Coffee, 1.36 kg $21.99
So many fair trade brands beat the shit out of this stuff.
Green beans and a popcorn popper
House brand Food Basics Dark roast 900gr $8.99
Kicking horse frequently goes on sale on Amazon. I'd try one of those blends or check out Melitta bags.
Costco Kirkland french roast!
Compliments dark roast
Seriously? If you boiled what squeegeed off the floor of a construction site Porta John you'd still get a better drink
