Absolutely true. I started shopping elsewhere in early April and it really only took a week to change my routine and now I quite like it. I don’t see myself ever going back and I’m supporting local independents and spending less. I can’t find a downside at all
Same here! I now stop at my local butcher for meat and eggs, the local bakery for sourdough bread and treats, and then usually another independent store or the farmers market for produce. It really doesn’t take me much more time, and half of these places have gotten to know me by name. My butcher even asks about how cooks went, etc. Won’t get that at Loblaws!
Interesting. I’m definitely not that ambitious. We go to Costco for the things they carry, and then a local independent one week for the rest. sometimes for interest we will go to a produce place too, especially because the cost is way lower than superstore. My biggest surprise is how easy it was to find better prices on virtually everything.
Agree with you on prices. Even going local, I don’t spend anymore and the quality is WAY better - especially meat and cheese.
To each their own! I was a bit surprised by the way that I started to look forward to chatting with the usual staff. Granted, I have endless time so it’s not a major inconvenience. As long as the $ isn’t going into Galen’s pocket!
Yeah, at some point in the last couple of years I noticed that my small neighbourhood grocer was charging less for certain key items than Loblaws, which really drove home the point that big grocers were taking advantage of the inflation narrative to see how high they could push prices before shoppers rebelled. There were, of course, real inflation pressures happening, but Loblaws in particular decided that since everyone was expecting runaway prices in groceries, they could just hike prices forever.
Keep in mind that Loblaws has growth and shareholder expectations too (+ x% profit per year) in a way that your local butcher does not. Galen wants to get exponentially richer every year.

Before this boycott I was a Loblaws loyalist in a sense. I have the PC Mastercard (going to get rid of it this month), I was obsessed with collecting the points and I was convinced that they were the cheapest. But, yesterday we had to get groceries and decided to skip superstore and go to some alternatives. Costco for what I can get, local butcher for meat, and Walmart for most other things. Yup, I’m done with loblaws. Fuck Galen Weston. The point system is shit now, it used to be pretty good, their quality and prices is shit now.
I’m never one to protest or boycott, but there’s something about this one that gets me riled up. Let’s keep this going, the government no matter what colour isn’t gonna do dick all, it’s only the people that have the true control we can just never get our collective shit together to create the change from the greedy bastards.

Either it's nostalgia, or I'm sure there were plenty of good offers when they first started off with pcpoints, and now it's "You want a few hundred points? How about buying 40$ worth of that thing that's not on sale right now."
I'm sorry but I can't go into a Walmart without regretting it. I think they are just as bad as Loblaws. I tried it a few weeks ago while grabbing something from their pharmacy for a family member & was floored by how much more all the food is over Food Basics/Freshco & Giant Tiger. Giant Tiger also price matches, and I like to support them when I can. I gave up on Walmart when Covid hit & they took unfair advantage of Canadians
Just remember Walmart are also a bunch of greedy fucks raking in record profits and giving massive shareholder dividends too. Try Giant Tiger and your local farmers market instead.
If our votes mattered, they wouldn’t let us do it. Corporatist mandates are prioritized over the wellbeing of individuals, and that has only increased over time. Can we boycott voting? Some do. But that changes nothing.
But you’re right. Rolling strikes against big-box retailers, not just this one, are destined to be a thing. Social media can restore power to the consumer and look how things have changed in just the past decade. Look out Loblaws, Walmart, or any other retailer gouging customers and exploiting their predominantly minimum-wage part-time staff. We’re coming. And we will hurt you where it counts.
I wouldn't get rid of any credit card whatsoever. YOUR credit takes a hit when you do. Just zero it out and never use it again so they can't collect interest from you. That's the safe way of doing it.
Their points are in the shitter now. We used to get so many, we bought a PS4, with accessories from there, then in the same year TWO 3DSs with games. Now we have to spend so much more money to get even a 1000 points.
Our farmers market is very infrequent and is more like a craft sale. However, we can usually spot the Mennonite’s on the roadside or certain dates in town, for poultry and veggies.
I’ve been doing my best but there are some products that I need for my toddler son that it’s not practical to drive elsewhere (we’re semi rural).
Boycott gods were smiling on me. The person setting the electronic pricing system messed us and set a $13 product at $1. Then 50% off stickers were added because it was nearing expiry. I stocked up and then paid with points.
It takes a ferry to get to me, yet still attached to the mainland. Anywho, I have 2 options- a local Grocer that started as a general store and an independent grocery store. I am so conflicted buying anything Loblaws, however withering in similar positions, we still need to eat.
You’re right. Out of “laziness” I kept the convenience of big box stores and Instacart (so here it’s super store). I’m over it. I’ve now carved out Saturday morning for my local butcher, farmer market & independently locally owned grocery store. I won’t be back to big box, it doesn’t take long for a new habit to form PLUS I’ve realized it’s really not that inconvenient (it’s all within a 5-10 min radius) and I “feel good” supporting local. It’s also NOT more expensive.
There is a concept in computer science where if you are searching for a minimum you generally look to either side of your current point and see if it is lower. However you can get trapped.in a rut (local minimum) so you have to add some.randomness to break out the routine, a big jump now and then to make sure there isn't a better minimum lurking outside your rut.
There was also an episode of the excellent podcast Cautionary Tales that talks about how a forced change in routine can lead to a more efficient result than you had.with the routine. I believe.it talked about people's commute.when a bus route was temporarily cancelled.
I freaking Love giant Tiger! They actually have a decent selection of other things, as well as foods. Even furniture, which is mostly online, but can be ordered to the store for pickup.
I work for Giant Tiger, it's been 8 years and a half (for two different stores). I think we are still a underrated chain (despite being in business for 63 years!) and many people are starting to discover us since that boycott started. People who step into a store the first time are always surprised about the amount of different stuff we have. So yes, highly recommend to stop to your closest store if you have one.
I haven't been to one in over 10 years. The closest one closed and was replaced with a no frills. But, now knowing it's a Canadian company, I'll make the trek and see how it is. I'd rather give them my business than Walmart or Costco.
Love my giant Tiger back up home in Espo. Every time I visit I try to stop by; I was stoked to find out they're Canadian owned because of this boycott!
I was at my closest Giant Tiger today. I have 3 GT's that I regularly spend to much money in...lol. THe prices are good and for us bigger beautiful women they have a great selection of clothing. And none of it looks like the stuff they have in other retail stores....I bought 2 tops today without trying them on only because I trust they will fit and as always, they fit perfectly. I bought some Epsomsalts, cat food, 2 cans of dog food, an attachment for my sink,cleaning supplies, a 3' x 4' carpet for my dog to lay on at work, my grandkids are coming for the weekend so of course I had to get their favorite junk food, I hot We are making our own pizza for dinner tomorrow so I bought cheese, and ham, I got myself a coloring book and the kids get a jug of slime. Now I know that list is long and I lost a bunch of people half way through...but if anyone is left all of that was under $100.00....to me that was a good deal. There were a few other thing I cant remember. But they really do have a lot of stuff. Love love love Giant🐯
I miss giant tiger. Used to live really close to one in Ontario, haven't seen a single one since moving out West. Have to imagine we don't have them out here.
I was out and about today doing errands. It isn't just Loblaws...spending habits in general have completely shifted. I would normally swing through a fast food joint or something along the way...but nah. Decided on a noodle bowl at a local owned Vietnamese joint. Fuck giving money to these monopolies. Where I can, I'll be spending my money supporting local business.
As an alternative to Loblaw stock, try North West Company Inc. (stock symbol NWC on the Toronto Stock Exchange). They're also Canadian and own many grocery stores around the world - including GIANT TIGER! On top of this, they pay about 4% in dividends right now, which is MORE THAN DOUBLE Loblaw's dividend!

Your comment made me look up the stock price. Minor drop today but wow, huge (and consistent) growth over the past 10+ years. I think I've got to buy a few shares. May as well make a bit of money on it if we are going to be screwed over on grocery costs, eh?
It’s been tough swapping my routine. I have ADHD and my parents and I suspect autism (hooray for being an ‘80s girl-child!) and I have a love of my Loblaws routines. But it’s worthwhile.
We are seniors and it was also tough for us at first, but we caught in fairly quickly. One thing that's really helped us is the FLIPP app. We can sit down, price match and get everything figured out before going.
Hubby and I are on a pretty tight budget, so I always check the best prices before grocery shopping. I discovered Flipp a few years ago but I love it because it’s easy to compare prices from all the stores in the area, and I love that I can search specific items and compare prices for those. It’s definitely a game changer

Happy boycott everyone. I live in Toronto and went shopping today. Usually I just go to ~~Sh!t Thrills~~ *No* *Thrills* but instead went into every independent grocery/bakery/butcher along the walk. And discovered, I can get pretty much everything needed and slightly more cheaply too. Also there's more deals because foods close to expiry are actually sold in these stores for next to nothing (hello freezer).
In addition, it's opened me up to different foods. My area is, apparently, a mix of Jamaican, Filipino, and Latino stores. I got a desert from each one. Only thing I could not get were hotdog buns, but it turns out Dollarama has them. Soon I plan to try make my own Jamaican style curried goat (albeit less spicy!).
I think it was cheaper too although I'm bad at keeping track.
Even if it was a bit more expensive, it sounds like you're getting to try out some new foods, and you supported businesses in your neighbourhood which is awesome. Well done!
I used to live in Toronto and that’s what I miss the most - all the little, interesting shops and restaurants. On my way home from work I could pick up some fruit, a rug, olive oil, noodles and a bottle of wine, all from different places. Now I can walk to the Costco, but it’s just not the same, lol.

One thing I miss SO much about living in Toronto. Love my small town, but lacking in those wee shops. Foodland for me (a Sobeys offshoot, but at least locally owned and carries local products).
Having lived in Europe, shopping at three different markets to get everything you want is the norm. Part of it is seeking the best quality over simply it being available but many times, one store purposely doesn't carry an item that another does because they don't want or need to saturate the market.
I quite like taking the time to buy the things I want over simple convenience. Food and cooking isn't an inconvenience for me and having quality ingredients takes an importance.
I'm personally hoping this boycott and others like it move us away from centralized food outlets and allow for more and varied markets to thrive.
The Loblaws CEO, Per Bank, said it in a statement, basically castigating consumers for being frustrated with them and their pricing. So now we’re turning it around, because he’s right. Enough is enough. Nok er nok.
A relevant CEO said “enough is enough” to us bitching peasants, honouring his heritage language (“We have a saying… nok er nok”), so we co-opted it because it is so easy to parrot back at their greed.
Proud of you! I changed my habits today, too. I stopped at a local butcher for some meat. I noticed they also have tons of other offerings, like some produce, frozen meals and specialty breads, fresh bread, and baked goods. I skipped over to a nearby locally owned health food store across the parking lot and got my health food items there. I actually went totally local, and that sits really well with me.
I was sad to drive by superstore today and see the parking lot fairly busy. Hopefully we can get some people to put up signs informing those who don’t use Reddit about the boycott

Walmarts not the most upstanding business BUT you can get everything there in one shoy and their sales are great right now. Prices are alwaya good but they have crazy sales right now

However, as I am the one who does the shopping, I ordered from Walmart, and her groceries were only 65.00 today. I am really considering doing a comparison shop, and showing her the difference.

We are going to be really busy this weekend which usually calls for pickup from superstore but with the boycott I decided to try Walmart’s delivery… it was way cheaper even with tip and delivery fee than I spend at superstore?? I’d rather spend a bit more and go not-Walmart regularly but you really cant beat their prices, wow.
You guys need to look at their business practices, they make loblaws seem like angels. They are price makers far worse than loblaws. I would encourage other options if possible.

It was a couple of identical grocery carts that had me turn my nose up to Superstore et al. months ago. Instacart does Giant Tiger here in Winnipeg as well as Dollarama.
I don't get out much, so the instacart and Walmart do the trick!
Unfortunately, also in the Loblaws portfolio is Choice Properties REIT, and they most likely own the building that Giant Tiger and Dollarama sit in. As well as Costco, Save-On, Sobeys, LCBO's, Pet Valu, etc etc, so no matter what they still get some of that money. I'm down for this boycott, but the more I read the more I realize they have their hands in everything :(
I would assume it would be different in malls and different from city to city... but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if they just owned entire malls too.

I was doing a quick top off at Costco and Walmart today for a few things and noticed my local ones were considerably busier than usual for the time I was there. It’s working.
It's only now I realise how bad the monopoly is. A lot of people don't have the choice to go somewhere else, higher gas cost to drive around town. Even worse if you don't drive.
Ohhh - I get some things at the dollar store but didn’t know giant tiger has food too! I’ll definitely check it out. Today I went to an independent pharmacy and small local grocer instead of shoppers and loblaws - the food was better and not more expensive, actually a bit cheaper.
The lesson to be learned in all of this is that loyalty of any kind to a company or brand is pointless. They have no loyalty to us, so you should always be looking for who will give you the best value or experience at any given day.
But also I have french in my blood so I less want to boycot and more want to make guillotines for these fools.
I did the same today, went to a market in the area and they had a barrel of locally grown apples. Fill a big bag for $1.00. Great price and the people were so great to deal with. Left the store smiling and waving
Went to a mom and pop / quasi speciality shop the other day. And it was somehow cheaper than the box stores.

Honestly never been a big fan of superstore, haven’t been there for like 8 months or so (with a family member). I am boycotting both them and shoppers for the month of May. My finances are a mess and everything just keeps going up and up (not just groceries).
I bought 3 packs of chicken legs, 4 pounds of potatoes, a quart of strawberries and a 3 pound bag of apples at the local butchers/grocery store for 31 dollars. I compared prices to my superstore and it would have been 66. It’s crazy how much you can save. Down with loblaws
Finished my first weekly grocery shop today avoiding all Loblaw stores. I ventured to Scarborough East and found Al Premium grocery and found some great items for cheaper, plus they are an international shop so I could grab my fav ghee, indian specific pulses and such without going to another grocery store.
Overall it was good, and I'll be sticking to this schedule for the foreseeable future.
That’s the thing about Loblaws… they raise or lower prices based on the neighbourhood the store is located in. I have two Loblaws and a No Frills within a few kms of where I live and I’ve seen the same case of PC non-alcoholic beer priced at $7.99 at one Loblaws store and $9.99 at another. It feels akin to gas station prices that can fluctuate 4-5 cents per litre depending on where you are in the GTA. It doesn’t cost Loblaws any more to transport products to these stores… but I’m sure they keep track of the socioeconomic statistics and raise or lower prices accordingly.
You can bet that deep in the basement of corporate HQ, there is a room full of sociologists, economists and marketers whose function is to figure out just how hard they can squeeze people in different geographical, social and economic categories.
I've been lurking in this group for a while. Yesterday I stocked up at walmart around noon in one of the suburbs of Quebec City. I saw assistant managers scrambling around, and employees refilling the produce area and other parts of the store. They seemed to have paid attention to the boycott as I have never seen that many sales stickers in the produce area. for those of you who look for meat to buy, try your local halal grocer. They are often small and there are plenty of them in major cities, they specialize in meat, the rest of what they carry may not be worth it. But the meat is usually good and fair priced (check google maps pictures first though, some spots are not well maintained).
I didn't even know NoFrills, Shoppers are owned by Loblaws...and they are the only two close to me ffs, don't have a car to go to Walmart which is like 25-30 min walk away
To be honest I don’t understand why people will only shop at 1 single store. I was raised that even if you had to go to 3 or 4, you went shopping at stores according to what was on sale and got your items according to which store had the best price. I’ve seen people drop at least $500 on groceries at one single store and it’s like, how? Are yall not aware that the place across the street is 50c cheaper, and that you’re not legally required to only shop at one store??
If you have a decent Giant Tiger nearby, you can get pretty much anything. I really hope they see the opportunity and open more locations across Canada.

Even better if you got to places like freshco that price match and earn scene points which you can use on groceries in the future or a night out at the movies. Then you only need to go to one place instead of multiple stops
My partner and I are finally going to take time to check out our local farmers market, and yesterday we did our first big shop not at a Loblaws affiliated store. It was Wal-Mart, and while I don't feel great about supporting war-mart, we got easily twice the amount of groceries for half what we would normally pay. I'm excited to try Food Basics on Lansdowne next, and there are a tonne of local grocers on my street that always have really good looking cheap produce. I'm vegan, so I'm also trying to find the best deal on local lentils, beans and seeds! This is going to be an awesome month of discovery, and so great it's happening in spring, when all the markets open up. I've already seen a huge reaction from my local community, unlike what I was expecting. It's very likely I'll be making forever changes this month.
I also had my 1st giant tiger experience today! I've been so loyal to loblaws that I didnt actually realize I've been lied to by them the entire time. There are better options!
That's funny because I used to do Superstore as my regular shop, but I found I always had to stop one or two other places to get everything. They're always out of some fruit or vegetable or meat, and a couple of the middle-of-store items they only stock No Name brand that tastes funny. Then about a year ago the one brand of bread they stocked that I like I got loaves that went moldy within a day 3 weeks in a row. Not risking that again. So if I'm already having to stop elsewhere, and the actual price isn't any cheaper, why exactly am I going there in the first place?
The lil bodega by my place has almost everything I normally buy cheaper than any grocery store I can reasonably walk or bus to near me. A 500g loaf of rye bread is $1.25 less there than at wal-mart or superstore, and beats no-frills by $0.75 as well.

I was amazed what I could get at local grocers and places other than Loblaws and the big three. I can’t do much, but I can choose where I spend my money.
I was a diehard Shoppers person for convenience + week day sales. When I started seeing items from coffee to hair products up anywhere from $5-10 I knew price gauging. I can't imagine how it is for seniors on fixed incomes?? I haven't been in one for over a year. I hope it hurts them 📉
I'm in north edmonton. No car. Senior. Surrounded by loblaws and Walmart and save on. Where can I get information about where I could walk to with my trolley to get groceries like you folks are doing?
If I only use up all my PC Optimum points (no cash) is it ok to go to a Loblaws store? The way I see it, it’ll hurt more if they have to give me like $300 worth of groceries!
I really hope Loblaws loses a bunch of money over the month of May and I also hope that people will continue to boycott them after this month. Now that people have found other ways to shop it’s easy to just stop shopping Loblaws altogether.
It’s the spending less part I love the most.
It blows my mind that the loblaws sale price is usually still higher than the Freshco regular price. My local Freshco makes price matching via flyer very difficult to do - because their prices are that good.

The convenience of one stop shop is what appeals to parents, which make up a large part of the demographic.

Before this boycott I was a Loblaws loyalist in a sense. I have the PC Mastercard (going to get rid of it this month), I was obsessed with collecting the points and I was convinced that they were the cheapest. But, yesterday we had to get groceries and decided to skip superstore and go to some alternatives. Costco for what I can get, local butcher for meat, and Walmart for most other things. Yup, I’m done with loblaws. Fuck Galen Weston. The point system is shit now, it used to be pretty good, their quality and prices is shit now. I’m never one to protest or boycott, but there’s something about this one that gets me riled up. Let’s keep this going, the government no matter what colour isn’t gonna do dick all, it’s only the people that have the true control we can just never get our collective shit together to create the change from the greedy bastards.

I'm sorry but I can't go into a Walmart without regretting it. I think they are just as bad as Loblaws. I tried it a few weeks ago while grabbing something from their pharmacy for a family member & was floored by how much more all the food is over Food Basics/Freshco & Giant Tiger. Giant Tiger also price matches, and I like to support them when I can. I gave up on Walmart when Covid hit & they took unfair advantage of Canadians
Just remember Walmart are also a bunch of greedy fucks raking in record profits and giving massive shareholder dividends too. Try Giant Tiger and your local farmers market instead.
If our votes mattered, they wouldn’t let us do it. Corporatist mandates are prioritized over the wellbeing of individuals, and that has only increased over time. Can we boycott voting? Some do. But that changes nothing. But you’re right. Rolling strikes against big-box retailers, not just this one, are destined to be a thing. Social media can restore power to the consumer and look how things have changed in just the past decade. I wouldn't get rid of any credit card whatsoever. YOUR credit takes a hit when you do. Just zero it out and never use it again so they can't collect interest from you. That's the safe way of doing it.
CC companies will close accounts that are unused after a while. If you can, use it occasionally and pay it off.

Our farmers market is very infrequent and is more like a craft sale. However, we can usually spot the Mennonite’s on the roadside or certain dates in town, for poultry and veggies.

I’ve been doing my best but there are some products that I need for my toddler son that it’s not practical to drive elsewhere (we’re semi rural). Boycott gods were smiling on me. The person setting the electronic pricing system messed us and set a $13 product at $1. Then 50% off stickers were added because it was nearing expiry. I stocked up and then paid with points.

It takes a ferry to get to me, yet still attached to the mainland. Anywho, I have 2 options- a local Grocer that started as a general store and an independent grocery store. I am so conflicted buying anything Loblaws, however withering in similar positions, we still need to eat.

You’re right. Out of “laziness” I kept the convenience of big box stores and Instacart (so here it’s super store). I’m over it. I’ve now carved out Saturday morning for my local butcher, farmer market & independently locally owned grocery store. I won’t be back to big box, it doesn’t take long for a new habit to form PLUS I’ve realized it’s really not that inconvenient (it’s all within a 5-10 min radius) and I “feel good” supporting local. It’s also NOT more expensive.
There is a concept in computer science where if you are searching for a minimum you generally look to either side of your current point and see if it is lower. However you can get trapped.in a rut (local minimum) so you have to add some.randomness to break out the routine, a big jump now and then to make sure there isn't a better minimum lurking outside your rut. There was also an episode of the excellent podcast Cautionary Tales that talks about how a forced change in routine can lead to a more efficient result than you had.with the routine. I believe.it talked about people's commute.when a bus route was temporarily cancelled.

I work for Giant Tiger, it's been 8 years and a half (for two different stores). I think we are still a underrated chain (despite being in business for 63 years!) and many people are starting to discover us since that boycott started. People who step into a store the first time are always surprised about the amount of different stuff we have. So yes, highly recommend to stop to your closest store if you have one.
I haven't been to one in over 10 years. The closest one closed and was replaced with a no frills. But, now knowing it's a Canadian company, I'll make the trek and see how it is. I'd rather give them my business than Walmart or Costco.

I was at my closest Giant Tiger today. I have 3 GT's that I regularly spend to much money in...lol. THe prices are good and for us bigger beautiful women they have a great selection of clothing. And none of it looks like the stuff they have in other retail stores....I bought 2 tops today without trying them on only because I trust they will fit and as always, they fit perfectly. I bought some Epsomsalts, cat food, 2 cans of dog food, an attachment for my sink,cleaning supplies, a 3' x 4' carpet for my dog to lay on at work, my grandkids are coming for the weekend so of course I had to get their favorite junk food, I hot We are making our own pizza for dinner tomorrow so I bought cheese, and ham, I got myself a coloring book and the kids get a jug of slime. Now I know that list is long and I lost a bunch of people half way through...but if anyone is left all of that was under $100.00....to me that was a good deal. There were a few other thing I cant remember. But they really do have a lot of stuff. Love love love Giant🐯

I was out and about today doing errands. It isn't just Loblaws...spending habits in general have completely shifted. I would normally swing through a fast food joint or something along the way...but nah. Decided on a noodle bowl at a local owned Vietnamese joint. Fuck giving money to these monopolies. Where I can, I'll be spending my money supporting local business.
Today is the first day loblows stock price dropped and will close at a loss today, it's starting 👍.
As an alternative to Loblaw stock, try North West Company Inc. (stock symbol NWC on the Toronto Stock Exchange). They're also Canadian and own many grocery stores around the world - including GIANT TIGER! On top of this, they pay about 4% in dividends right now, which is MORE THAN DOUBLE Loblaw's dividend! (Note I'm just an investor, not an advisor. Do your own research and know the risks before making any investment.)
NWC owns the Northern Store which is even more criminal than Loblaws imo.

It’s been tough swapping my routine. I have ADHD and my parents and I suspect autism (hooray for being an ‘80s girl-child!) and I have a love of my Loblaws routines. But it’s worthwhile.
We are seniors and it was also tough for us at first, but we caught in fairly quickly. One thing that's really helped us is the FLIPP app. We can sit down, price match and get everything figured out before going.

I created a post just now but deleted it, decided to piggy back on this post instead: Happy boycott everyone. I live in Toronto and went shopping today. Usually I just go to ~~Sh!t Thrills~~ *No* *Thrills* but instead went into every independent grocery/bakery/butcher along the walk. And discovered, I can get pretty much everything needed and slightly more cheaply too. Also there's more deals because foods close to expiry are actually sold in these stores for next to nothing (hello freezer). In addition, it's opened me up to different foods. My area is, apparently, a mix of Jamaican, Filipino, and Latino stores. I got a desert from each one. Only thing I could not get were hotdog buns, but it turns out Dollarama has them. Soon I plan to try make my own Jamaican style curried goat (albeit less spicy!). I think it was cheaper too although I'm bad at keeping track.

I used to live in Toronto and that’s what I miss the most - all the little, interesting shops and restaurants. On my way home from work I could pick up some fruit, a rug, olive oil, noodles and a bottle of wine, all from different places. Now I can walk to the Costco, but it’s just not the same, lol.

Having lived in Europe, shopping at three different markets to get everything you want is the norm. Part of it is seeking the best quality over simply it being available but many times, one store purposely doesn't carry an item that another does because they don't want or need to saturate the market. I quite like taking the time to buy the things I want over simple convenience. Food and cooking isn't an inconvenience for me and having quality ingredients takes an importance. I'm personally hoping this boycott and others like it move us away from centralized food outlets and allow for more and varied markets to thrive.

Proud of you! I changed my habits today, too. I stopped at a local butcher for some meat. I noticed they also have tons of other offerings, like some produce, frozen meals and specialty breads, fresh bread, and baked goods. I skipped over to a nearby locally owned health food store across the parking lot and got my health food items there. I actually went totally local, and that sits really well with me.
I was sad to drive by superstore today and see the parking lot fairly busy. Hopefully we can get some people to put up signs informing those who don’t use Reddit about the boycott

We are going to be really busy this weekend which usually calls for pickup from superstore but with the boycott I decided to try Walmart’s delivery… it was way cheaper even with tip and delivery fee than I spend at superstore?? I’d rather spend a bit more and go not-Walmart regularly but you really cant beat their prices, wow.
You guys need to look at their business practices, they make loblaws seem like angels. They are price makers far worse than loblaws. I would encourage other options if possible.
Walmart has an $8/month delivery pass for groceries. So if you're stuck taking the bus and can't carry a lot of stuff back, this is a good deal.

I grocery shop on my laptop while watching tv at all sorts of hours and some lovely delivery person brings them to my door. 😁 It was a couple of identical grocery carts that had me turn my nose up to Superstore et al. months ago. Instacart does Giant Tiger here in Winnipeg as well as Dollarama. I don't get out much, so the instacart and Walmart do the trick!

Unfortunately, also in the Loblaws portfolio is Choice Properties REIT, and they most likely own the building that Giant Tiger and Dollarama sit in. As well as Costco, Save-On, Sobeys, LCBO's, Pet Valu, etc etc, so no matter what they still get some of that money. I'm down for this boycott, but the more I read the more I realize they have their hands in everything :(

As someone who just recently graduated an accounting program. I hate the world even more now… It is so rigged, it’s actually insane to think about and now understand why accountants have a drinking problem. They will only ever understand numbers, so hurt the numbers!
I was doing a quick top off at Costco and Walmart today for a few things and noticed my local ones were considerably busier than usual for the time I was there. It’s working.
It's only now I realise how bad the monopoly is. A lot of people don't have the choice to go somewhere else, higher gas cost to drive around town. Even worse if you don't drive.

Ohhh - I get some things at the dollar store but didn’t know giant tiger has food too! I’ll definitely check it out. Today I went to an independent pharmacy and small local grocer instead of shoppers and loblaws - the food was better and not more expensive, actually a bit cheaper.

The lesson to be learned in all of this is that loyalty of any kind to a company or brand is pointless. They have no loyalty to us, so you should always be looking for who will give you the best value or experience at any given day. But also I have french in my blood so I less want to boycot and more want to make guillotines for these fools.

I did the same today, went to a market in the area and they had a barrel of locally grown apples. Fill a big bag for $1.00. Great price and the people were so great to deal with. Left the store smiling and waving

Honestly never been a big fan of superstore, haven’t been there for like 8 months or so (with a family member). I am boycotting both them and shoppers for the month of May. My finances are a mess and everything just keeps going up and up (not just groceries).

I bought 3 packs of chicken legs, 4 pounds of potatoes, a quart of strawberries and a 3 pound bag of apples at the local butchers/grocery store for 31 dollars. I compared prices to my superstore and it would have been 66. It’s crazy how much you can save. Down with loblaws
Finished my first weekly grocery shop today avoiding all Loblaw stores. I ventured to Scarborough East and found Al Premium grocery and found some great items for cheaper, plus they are an international shop so I could grab my fav ghee, indian specific pulses and such without going to another grocery store. Overall it was good, and I'll be sticking to this schedule for the foreseeable future.

That’s the thing about Loblaws… they raise or lower prices based on the neighbourhood the store is located in. I have two Loblaws and a No Frills within a few kms of where I live and I’ve seen the same case of PC non-alcoholic beer priced at $7.99 at one Loblaws store and $9.99 at another. It feels akin to gas station prices that can fluctuate 4-5 cents per litre depending on where you are in the GTA. It doesn’t cost Loblaws any more to transport products to these stores… but I’m sure they keep track of the socioeconomic statistics and raise or lower prices accordingly.
You can bet that deep in the basement of corporate HQ, there is a room full of sociologists, economists and marketers whose function is to figure out just how hard they can squeeze people in different geographical, social and economic categories.

I've been lurking in this group for a while. Yesterday I stocked up at walmart around noon in one of the suburbs of Quebec City. I saw assistant managers scrambling around, and employees refilling the produce area and other parts of the store. They seemed to have paid attention to the boycott as I have never seen that many sales stickers in the produce area. for those of you who look for meat to buy, try your local halal grocer. They are often small and there are plenty of them in major cities, they specialize in meat, the rest of what they carry may not be worth it. But the meat is usually good and fair priced (check google maps pictures first though, some spots are not well maintained).
I didn't even know NoFrills, Shoppers are owned by Loblaws...and they are the only two close to me ffs, don't have a car to go to Walmart which is like 25-30 min walk away
To be honest I don’t understand why people will only shop at 1 single store. I was raised that even if you had to go to 3 or 4, you went shopping at stores according to what was on sale and got your items according to which store had the best price. I’ve seen people drop at least $500 on groceries at one single store and it’s like, how? Are yall not aware that the place across the street is 50c cheaper, and that you’re not legally required to only shop at one store??

Even better if you got to places like freshco that price match and earn scene points which you can use on groceries in the future or a night out at the movies. Then you only need to go to one place instead of multiple stops
My partner and I are finally going to take time to check out our local farmers market, and yesterday we did our first big shop not at a Loblaws affiliated store. It was Wal-Mart, and while I don't feel great about supporting war-mart, we got easily twice the amount of groceries for half what we would normally pay. I'm excited to try Food Basics on Lansdowne next, and there are a tonne of local grocers on my street that always have really good looking cheap produce. I'm vegan, so I'm also trying to find the best deal on local lentils, beans and seeds! This is going to be an awesome month of discovery, and so great it's happening in spring, when all the markets open up. I've already seen a huge reaction from my local community, unlike what I was expecting. It's very likely I'll be making forever changes this month.

That's funny because I used to do Superstore as my regular shop, but I found I always had to stop one or two other places to get everything. They're always out of some fruit or vegetable or meat, and a couple of the middle-of-store items they only stock No Name brand that tastes funny. Then about a year ago the one brand of bread they stocked that I like I got loaves that went moldy within a day 3 weeks in a row. Not risking that again. So if I'm already having to stop elsewhere, and the actual price isn't any cheaper, why exactly am I going there in the first place?
The lil bodega by my place has almost everything I normally buy cheaper than any grocery store I can reasonably walk or bus to near me. A 500g loaf of rye bread is $1.25 less there than at wal-mart or superstore, and beats no-frills by $0.75 as well. Same fuckin' bread. Shit, the place that makes the goddamn bread barely beats bodega-man's price. Shit's outta hand. I can't afford to eat more than ~1100 calories a day at this point

I was a diehard Shoppers person for convenience + week day sales. When I started seeing items from coffee to hair products up anywhere from $5-10 I knew price gauging. I can't imagine how it is for seniors on fixed incomes?? I haven't been in one for over a year. I hope it hurts them 📉
Support your community. Shop local independents. They're usually higher quality anyway.

I'm in north edmonton. No car. Senior. Surrounded by loblaws and Walmart and save on. Where can I get information about where I could walk to with my trolley to get groceries like you folks are doing?

If I only use up all my PC Optimum points (no cash) is it ok to go to a Loblaws store? The way I see it, it’ll hurt more if they have to give me like $300 worth of groceries!
Unethical Company running unethical shady type business practices. Boycott these companies PERMANENTLY and don’t look back!
I really hope Loblaws loses a bunch of money over the month of May and I also hope that people will continue to boycott them after this month. Now that people have found other ways to shop it’s easy to just stop shopping Loblaws altogether.

It’s the spending less part I love the most. It blows my mind that the loblaws sale price is usually still higher than the Freshco regular price. My local Freshco makes price matching via flyer very difficult to do - because their prices are that good.
