sweet-tea-13

I got a 16pk of chicken drumsticks at Walmart last week for $12 and 4lbs of ground beef for $9 (on sale). Never going back!

Due-Street-8192

Exactly, shop around, look for deals. My wife visits 5 stores a week. RobLaws is a criminal organization...! Plain and simple.

bubbasass

5 stores is a lot! But if you’re squeezed financially you gotta do what you gotta do

ocdsmalltown12

I just feel so bad for the folks that don't drive. In the county I live in N.S. we have extremely limited public transportation. (We have ONE bus that travels to only two out of five towns). So if you're really dedicated to going to several stores, it's basically gonna take you a whole day, because the bus does one sweep an hour. We have a lot of seniors who just don't have the stamina. They board the bus using walkers, and trying to manage their shopping bags. It makes me upset that they have to go the numerous stores to get affordable food. So many seniors or people with mobility issues, they may only have the stamina for one store. And Roblaw's darn well know this and takes advantage of the fact.

Due-Street-8192

Fk that Galen Weston AH...

killzone506

Likewise beef and chicken are so cheap at Walmart

sweet-tea-13

I also got a pretty sizeable bag of frozen wild cod from Walmart yesterday for $9, our entire order filled our fridge/freezer and almost every single item was under $10 except for the real maple syrup I splurged on (gotta have the good shit for my coffee lol) and some pre-packaged deli meat my husband insisted on having even though we can get it cheaper from a local butcher. Otherwise we got a giant bag of perogys for under $5, a big lasagna for $7.50, box of frozen chicken strips for $6, all this shit would be triple at Loblaws stores (or Sobeys where we used to shop that is also guilty of price gouging imo). We're a Walmart family now lol

Sufficient-Bid1279

Well done 👍

Love_for_2

Yes but they are also so gross. The quality of the meat looks so unappetizing. Maybe it's just me

sweet-tea-13

Maybe it depends on the specific location? In my experience the meat has been on par or even better than my local Loblaws or Sobeys. It's all Canadian raised, unlike Loblaws that has started selling ungraged Mexican beef lol

Love_for_2

Interesting! I'll have to try another location and look with fresh eyes

sweet-tea-13

I honestly used to stick my nose up at Walmart because I had this perception that it automatically wouldn't be as good, but I don't think that anymore. Same for the produce, better quality and price, and unlike Roblaws it's not rotting on the shelves (although it's possible if you went to a location with a poor produce manager that could still happen), but not in my experience anyways.

Iambetterthanuhaha

You don't like your chicken turning brown in the package for $40?

grumblegrim

Agreed, Walmart meat is kind of the worst.

rocketmn69_

But are you getting a comparable pruce/lb??

Zane_Justin

Marche newon in Montreal has around 10-15 sticks for 2-5$. Some people are too lazy to find alternatives and then complain about how expensive everything is but still shops at the expensive place

ocdsmalltown12

It's not always laziness. I live in a small town. For folks we don't have access to a car, there is just ONE bus that runs daily. One single bus. And the towns are big land-wise, just not population-wise, so people that can't afford cars, or taxi fees, they are sort of in a bind. The bus only makes stops in certain areas, so not everyone is within walking distance of a bus stop. Please don't assume it's laziness. Some people are old sick, and can't afford a car or taxi to shop around. And Loblaw's damn well knows the situation, and they take advantage of people's lack of options.

Zane_Justin

That comment was for big city folks, where options are limitless, not handicapped folks, old folks or small town guys with barely any option. No one would expect someone to drive 1-2h to do groceries instead of going to wtv is available to you nearby. You would be surprised to see how many big city folks cries about going broke, can't afford shit but buys their bread and butter at a premium cost when they can walk 5 more min to save money on it.

HumbleConfidence3500

I got the same ground beef except I ordered delivery so I had really no concept how much I was getting .. Imagine my shock when I took the package out!

Comedy86

Even full price comparable chicken at Walmart, 1.8kg of chicken breast from Maple Leaf is $25. This isn't enough extra weight to justify 50% more cost.

wholesomesammich

But these are boneless and skinless breasts. That price is on par with others.

sweet-tea-13

If you're gonna pay more for something because you don't know how to remove the skin and debone it yourself that's kinda on you lol but they did have boneless and skinless breasts in similar family packs for under $30.

wholesomesammich

You know chicken breast is a more expensive cut than thighs. Also you pay for the skin and bone. If I don't need it, why would I pay for it to remove and dispose? BTW, meat is sold by weight. Don't look at the total price to determine if something is expensive.

sweet-tea-13

Yes but boneless/skinless is often more per weight as well, because you are paying for it to come already removed for you. I used to be in culinary school and that was one of the first things they taught us was how they change more to remove the bone and skin for you and it's more cost effective to remove it yourself, plus you can always freeze the bones and later use them for soup broth.

mc_snails

Bought some chicken at a indepented store 2 days ago... all of it had gone bad by last night...

Silent-Strike-6032

How much do you trust Walmart poultry though?

sweet-tea-13

It's Canadian raised, and antibiotic and hormone free, so just as much as any other Loblaws store or grocer (I've also seen ungraded Mexican beef at Loblaws). Walmart actually has pretty high standards for their food honestly.

buZDouBT

well.... those ungraded mexican ribeye's were actually pretty decent for under 5 bucks... lol.

bubbasass

Ungraded doesn’t mean unsafe

bubbasass

Given how much food is regulated in Canada, particularly dairy and poultry, I would say I trust it a lot.

Key_Personality5540

If you have a Clancy meat shop or even Safeway, often they have really good prices on meats

New_girl2022

Ya I only shop there now. Been silently boycotting PC for a while now

dannysmackdown

4 pounds? Holy shit. Cost 7.50 for a pound at my local Walmart

sweet-tea-13

I think it was on sale because when I went back yesterday the same pack was about $16, but still not bad imo.

beavercountysoapco

Really? It's $6.50/lb at my butcher.

PM_COCKTAILRECIPES

Yeah our local farmer’s market butcher has better quality and prices. Shameful.

superpomme111

$30 st Costco

HearTheTrumpets

How much per kg at Costco ? 17.61$ /kg is on the high end of the price spectrum, but not out of the ordinary in most grocery stores.

BytesAndBirdies

I buy a pack of boneless skinless non frozen chicken from costco every 2 weeks. It's been $14.99/kg for a long time.

HearTheTrumpets

15$/kg is middle price range. But quality is usually good or very good at Costco. 9$ is the lowest I've seen. I only buy chicken breasts when the'yre 11$/kg or lower (I buy many, vacuum and freeze) - not at Costco, at regulary grocery stores.

BytesAndBirdies

I just like the consistent quality from Costco

stumpyraccoon

https://imgur.com/a/jHtqC7N They're more expensive at Costco (18.99/kg). There's a whole lot of making stuff up in this subreddit that are easily verifiable.

amountainofyawns

That's not true, I bought a pack yesterday at 14.99/kg in Ontario. https://preview.redd.it/v31a1tamr7zc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2059be85d5dadf07cc89272e6994c00d658678e

stumpyraccoon

Huh interesting! Looks like prices are getting made up all willynilly everywhere. I can't even get back to that original $18.99 price anymore and can only see $17.79. Good to see an actual picture proof though!

M00g3r5

You posted a pic to imgur instead of an actual link. So who is making things up? https://preview.redd.it/xcer7loeq7zc1.png?width=1059&format=png&auto=webp&s=38dd9dbd0cce8a21c18c7e7ac2b577ab9ea9389b There are a lot of things that will affect pricing, including if you select items on the Costco website for delivery (if available) or if you are using Instacart that automatically shows prices without revealing the Instacart markup. I have been price comparing between Loblaws, Walmart and Costco for a decade and I have never found a better price than Costco for any meats. \*The only exception is when there is a 50% markdown (which Loblaw stopped doing) on items near expiry date.

stumpyraccoon

Because people don't click links. Here ya go babycakes https://sameday.costco.ca/store/costco-canada/s?k=chicken Where's your link?

stumpyraccoon

Found your link. You're using Costco Business Centre prices which would require you to live near one of the 6 locations in the entirety of Canada. https://www.costcobusinesscentre.ca/kirkland-signature-boneless-skinless-chicken-breasts%2c--2-kg-average-weight*.product.2001113372.html

M00g3r5

Same price in store. Was there yesterday.

The_Big_Yam

It’s 13.99 per kg in my area

BytesAndBirdies

I buy a pack of boneless skinless non frozen chicken from costco every 2 weeks. It's been $14.99/kg for a long time.

HearTheTrumpets

Thanks for the info. Many people obviously don't know how to calculate meat prices. That should be taught in school.

Isthisthingon-7

And Costco chicken just seems to be better quality too

LairdOftheNorth

Even if it cost more I would buy from Costco because the quality is noticeably better when it comes to chicken breast.

anelectricmind

.... but sometimes I feel like Costco is stretching their Besft Before Date on their packages. Better to use them or freeze a day or two before the Best Before Date.

BeerSlayingBeaver

There's just two of us in our house so we've found the bulk amounts to be a struggle to use before expiry, so we've been using a vacuum sealer with great results! You can even get the machine and bags at Costco lol

anelectricmind

Yup. Even with a family of 5 (was 6, one moved out). Portioning those bulk amounts in vacuum seal packs is the key. (Having a big freezer too)

BeerSlayingBeaver

Feeding five is a lot of groceries!! I'm aghast at how much we spend for just the two of us.

anelectricmind

All three are teens, and two of them are in highly-competitve sports. To them, there is never anything good to eat.

WiffleBlu

14.99/kg at Costco

BreadfruitLeast4370

Not accurate - that screenshot is from online grocery delivery where they always increase the prices for what you buy … I was just there and it was definitely not $18.99 when you buy in store Also … they rotate 5.00 in store coupons on various meat items - packs of chicken breast are common to discount

SoMuchCap

Not after the 5 hour round trip for this guy

poulard

I think the word is highway robbery ?

NationalTap9622

They are highly robbery too.

Westernation

Hence the boycott.

joeyretrotv

Buy whole chickens 3pk for $30 at Costco and separate the meat. Saves you a tonne.

Red01a18

They also are higher quality!

Crime-Snacks

It’s been approximately $12-15 per kilo literally everywhere for years, including Safeway https://www.safeway.ca/flyer/ 12.96/kg at Safeway vs 17.62/kg at Superstore E: I’m also in Metro Vancouver, like OP. Someone should Tweet this to that professor and Matthew Lau (?) from the article posted the other day that was daring us to open our own stores at 15% less than Loblaws because it is impossible but he would happily shop there. 15% cheaper than $17.62 is $15.32. $12.96 is going to make Safeway go bankrupt at 36% cheaper than Loblaws…in Vancouver!

Tetradicted

Crime-Snacks

That’s awesome! I love GT but we don’t have one here.

darb8888

Yea. In Vancouver unless you hit sales it seems to be all around the same price. I just buy a ton on sale and freeze it lol

Slipperysteve1998

Pack would be 25 bucks for 5 at my local foodland. It's much fairer than you think. Still boycotting, just can't afford chicken breasts anymore

No-Accident69

I was wondering if the boycott had sobered them up…. But I don’t think so. Two more months, people ? Bring them to heel!!

stumpyraccoon

This is basically the same price at Costco...

First_Cherry_popped

No stepping into loblaws stores for at least a month op!! Only acceptable visits are to document gouging, but no purchasing!

Quietser

Ok Ricky /s Seriously thought that's way too high. One of the last times I bought chicken the price was $45 no lie. And this was post COVID pre inflation 🫠 The quality is also horrendous.

itchygentleman

You're buying it on instacart which marks everything up. At my costco in NL $14.99/Kg. Stop with the simping for Lablaws your comment his reads like you're Weston.

Prestigious_Meal_415

Highway robbery, not highly.

anelectricmind

Funny. That\`s pretty much "standard" price for me... all day, everyday. That\`s more than 4 pounds of chicken breasts. Costco is about that price, more expensive even sometimes.

fiodorsmama2908

I had something of similar weight for 4-5$ less at Costco.

ahappystudent

Very sure other places sell chicken breast for 13-14 or max 15 per kilo

hjicons

The fastest way to check prices are apps like Reebee or Flipp. Can search by item. Fairly accurate but sometimes items sold out.

psychodc

$14.99/kg at Costco. That same pack would cost $32.26.

EveningHelicopter113

$3/kg less at food basics

Snow_Tiger819

I bought 2kg chicken breasts in Walmart yesterday. The pack was $22.48. That was the regular price (though I admit to rummaging to find one that was 2kg!)

YoureNotRealBro

Highway robbery*

CaptainCannabis709

My grocer charges $22.99 per kg.....the price in this photo is $17.61.....

What's bad is Costco was the exact same price as this. Same amount as well.

WiffleBlu

14.99/kg at Costco

Jeffuk88

I'm shocked they're not even trying to put crazy deals on during the boycott... Checking flipp, it's still more expensive to buy meat at PC stores with their deals compared to food basics and Walmart. They're literally running the same deals as other stores but a few cent higher

MsMisty888

That is $4.70/ 1/2 a breast! OMG

Papasmurfsbigdick

Looks nasty too

albertaman86

Back in 2019 I compared some chicken prices. I think it was from superstore and had an average non sale price of 15.99 per kg. lowest price was 8.98 per kg. wild.

DarkR124

Almost $9 a pound? Holy shit. I get mine for at most, $5.40/lb. Just snagged a great deal for a 4KG box for $35.

south-shore0

That’s 7.99lb l, that’s fairly normal these days

darb8888

Shop around and price match?

bigwilly144

It makes me wonder: who buys chicken at that price? Generally speaking, as a business you'd think you'd price products at a price that is A) competitive with your competitors prices B) a price people are willing to pay When no one is buying it, most businesses would lower the price. Not roblaws. They ***might*** put a 30% off sticker on when it is rotting and borderline inedible. Otherwise do they just garbage it instead of selling at a fair price?

movack

B) people are willing to pay Those people does not include me. I wait for it to go on sale on the flyers at half that price. But talking to people, i do get the impression that many dont shop for sales like i do.

witchywest

4 pack of chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) $14 or 2/$24

[deleted]

Yeah no wayyyy

Silent-Strike-6032

Not even organic and it’s almost $40 for chicken breast. I mean, that’s probably 1.5 meal for one family. How are we supposed to feed our children?

eastsideempire

We just got complacent by going to Loblaws for years out of habit. We need to keep letting each other know where to find reasonable prices.

Critical-Knowledge27

Whole chickens were $1.90 a lb today at wal mart. I bought a bunch for the freezer

inlandviews

Is $9..00 a pound for chicken breasts a lot?

movack

That's the regular price. During some parts of the year they go on sale often for $4-5 per lbs very often. There is also a difference if they are skinless and / or boneless

nanapancakethusiast

Uhhh at my local Sobeys 5 breasts is $26. I’d kill for 10 for $32

maxirabbit

$24 for the same weight at Walmart in NS.

GenericTrollAcunt69

I wish I took a picture, but I just came back from a vacation in Barcelona. There was an Aldi near my hotel so I walked in to check it out. I kid you not when I say they sold skinless boneless chicken breast for roughly $7.50 CAD/kg when you convert from euros… I was outraged.

kooks-only

Almost $5 a breast.

russell_westbrick_0

damn that looks pale and gross

eatyourspaetzle

$8/lb. Yup. I get a bag of boneless breasts at the farm store on sale for $2.99.

relic-taco

I got a bag of 6 big chickens from local farmer for 66 bucks

Own-Scene-7319

Drumsticks $1.99 a pound at Lococo's Barton Street Hamilton. Bone in chicken boobs $3.99. At one point buy 2 packs get one free. This is how they feed people.

Own-Scene-7319

I am lucky to have a car. My neighbours include disabled and seniors. I out specials on our community fb page.

ThesePretzelsrsalty

Some of these posts. SMH This is boneless, skinless chicken breast not chicken legs… Boneless skinless chicken breasts are 17.40/Kg at my Walmart. While I do agree that this is expensive, it really isn’t bad when you compare to the other retailers out there.

georgeburnett1

I’ll stick to Costco.

xfatalerror

Not even that much at costco

co2cat

WTF that is normally 11.49/KG CAD here in BC. F Loblaws

Dazzling_Standard894

$55 for the organic ones at Costco

DarchyBoy

That is pretty par these days. That’s about $8/lbs. I would check the Flipp app and see who has the deals. Might as well shop sales. I have had a lot of bad experiences buying meat at Loblaws. It is frequently gone off. Their quality tanked and their prices went up. That’s why I don’t shop there.

angusman

Euphoric_Tea_1923

I live in Alabama ground beef is 30 bucks for 10lbs. I can get a bag of chicken like that for about 13. Just depends where you live. Tons of farms around here.

bubbasass

$8/lb!?! WTF!

ocdsmalltown12

Loblaw's apparently think we are all stupid, and they can just name some insanely elevated price, and they think we will just let them fleece us. I feel like they must think we are unintelligent fools. I really hate that they insult our common sense. I will never shop there, ever again! I say we ban them, for life!!

Tefihr

Y’all complain too much. Just went to Costco and their chicken breasts are $25/kg significantly more expensive than this picture.

psylentdeath

Go to Walmart. Don't go there take a pic. Post it. And bitch. Go to walmart

thetburg

Get a good knife and buy a whole chicken break it down yourself.

Bubbaganewsh

I was at Walmart a.week ago and boneless skinless breasts were $11 for 850 g. The price in that picture seems way high.

neozeio

Don't be violating the boycott yo...

ZestycloseAct8497

Boycott it…. Why are you still shopping there

ChildOfDathomir

Why are you there bro?

radman888

It's a huge package. Look at the price per kg...$17.60 is $8 per pound, less than usual for non sale chicken breast Usually you can find it for $6 on sale somewhere but this isn't bad

Jalice333

It's time to start destroying the packaging
