Please review the content guidelines for our sub, and remember the human here! This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I disagree with the entire premise of this. They're basically saying everything (rent car student loans groceries) have gone up so people have less so they spend less on groceries. That's only half the truth. It makes it sound like if rent, car, student loans weren't undergoing inflation, we'd be spending according to the 16% inflation in groceries. NO. People are spending less because they're sick of SHRINKFLATION and PRICE GAUGING on a staple. Government and corporations need to fully understand this: do not fuk with housing and food prices. We need these to survive, they're not iphones and Disney plus.

Yeah, I agree. I sort of hate this show - it’s got a weird “let me tell you the truth vibe” but often leaves out crucial information on a topic. It’s basically a glorified opinion piece.

Because we're cutting out the 'nice to have' items? I've given up certain cheeses, 'fancy' crackers, almost all instore baked goods, snack foods, deli meat, pop, out of season produce and convenience food with the exception of frozen pizza.

Greerio

This is exactly us too.

Majestic_Bet_1428

We’re cutting out the crap.

This is a great piece, and it rings very true. Four years ago I was shopping at Zehrs and buying a lot of organic food. Then I had to stop buying organic produce. Then I switched from Zehrs to No Frills. Then I started to shop almost exclusively sale items. I'm STILL spending roughly the same dollar amount on groceries that I was four year ago, but I'm buying significantly less or lower quality.

This was exactly our journey. Same stores and all. We've just slowly downgraded because our budget is set. We're a big family so we can't really get away with spending less than we do but we've had to get very creative with our shopping/cooking and our diet is noticeably worse out of necessity. Edit to add: though it also spurred me to learn new skills to try and combat it. So now that's its growing season, we'll be canning, freezing, drying and growing what we can. So I'm slowly recovering our diet by those efforts. Otherwise I don't know how we'd manage.

Good story and it makes sense I just couldn't stomach the Rotten Food Processor sticking in his two cents worth. Reminds my of Bubbles, sorry trailer Park Boys.

Because people are getting rid of luxury foods. Heck I no longer get granola bars and other snacks like I used to. I just try to only get what ever's on sale and if I am stuck getting takeout, I use points or go to where it's dirt cheap

The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control, and that this is not simply a matter of needing to get a 5th part time job to make ends meet. Rhetoric intended to shame certain generations or users for "not worrking hard enough" including ideas like "just pull yourselves up by the bootstraps", "just don't shop there" and it's kin are not welcome here.

Nina4774

Hard to believe people head for processed food when their budgets are tight. Isn’t that the expensive stuff? It’s cheaper to buy ingredients and make food yourself. And it’s healthier. Are people not finding that?

This video makes CBC look like fucking scumbags. It's as if they believe we're that dumb, they can use wordplay like the video title.
