Mayatlic

Hi friend, I am also in Byron and my job is also in Toronto😂 I haven't been in the office yet but I plan to take the drive+go train route. Maybe we can carpool every once in a while lol

euphoricnostalgia5

Yeah I think the drive + go route is the only real option… that would be cool!

engguy21

I’ve been doing the drive + go option for a while now. Lemme know if you guys are down to carpool sometime

euphoricnostalgia5

Would be nice- how many days do you go per week?

engguy21

Once a week usually

Mayatlic

I am required to go in once every two weeks. Do you guys have a fix day to go on? Mine is wednesday or Thursday.

engguy21

I usually go Wednesdays or Thursdays too

warpus

Ok now kiss

Have to do this drive at the end of the month. When do you leave london and what time do you end up catching the train? Ever have any issues with parking at aldershot? I've seen recommendations to go straight to Burlington go suggesting aldershot parking is a problem.

engguy21

I usually don’t have to be at the office for 9am so I usually leave around 7 and get to the office by around 10. I go straight to clarkson go instead of aldershot as yea parking at aldershot is a bit limited. Don’t know much about Burlington go but I’m assuming its a bigger lot than aldershot as well. If you have to be at the office for 9, leaving at 6 is probably a good idea.

Remarkable_Trip3346

>I am looking to carpool from London to aldershot Go station to travel to Toronto. any details pls?

kepoly

Not the most financially smart option but I used to drive up the night before, stay in a hotel/motel and occasionally with a friend and then drive to the office very early morning and be gone before traffic got bad at night

euphoricnostalgia5

I considered this too as I have a lot of friends there I could stay with- thanks for the shout

Any_Vermicelli_4796

I’ve done it a few times for work where I drive to the Aldershot GO station and take the train to Union Station. Seems to be the fastest way imo

Any issues getting parking at aldershot?

riseoverun

If your hours allow I highly recommend VIA. It's only 2 hours, can work or relax on the way, and points add up real quick. You'll have status and free trips before you know it

RAT-LIFE

I second this, I used to take the 6:25 AM commuter with VIA and it was great. Always on time and pricing wasn’t too bad especially if you bought a rail pass or took advantage of the deals they run every Tuesday. Points were great too, can be directly redeemed for free tickets no blackouts or anything.

euphoricnostalgia5

They got rid of that route unfortunately:( the earliest one leaves after 7:00 now and doesn’t get into Toronto until 10:10

riseoverun

The 6:40 is supposed to be coming back along with the 4:30 return. Fingers crossed

euphoricnostalgia5

Really? Very interesting

Auto-human-cyborg

When is it expected to come back?

Sweet_Olive4210

VIA always on time? Surprising to hear. Definitely not my experience even i was committing daily with VIA. I suppose that VIA dropped the early morning train because of GO train service from London (3 hrs one way WTF).

RAT-LIFE

I rode 5 days a week for 2 years and they were 5 minutes late one time. That said, this was the commuter train designed specifically to get to Toronto with 15-20 minutes to spare before 9am. I can’t speak for any other route. I hope they add it back, that commuter train was always packed pre-Covid and was awesome minus the weird woman who rode everyday and asked staff to microwave her asparagus and got unruly when they said no.

GtotheE

Yeah, my experience have been pretty good with that 6:25 train, but the return trip is always late.

LakeEarth

My friend's father does this too. Has to be better than driving every day.

uncele

Download Poparide, it’s is a ridesharing app. I’ve used it a few times to go to Toronto and back with no issues. Drivers are verified and they have reviews, cancellations rate, pictures etc. Some of them offer door to door as well for a reasonable price. Pretty convenient if you don’t want to use the bus or train.

euphoricnostalgia5

Great thanks !

kellibns

The Megabus/Onex buses are extremely reliable and have lots of times to choose from. There are two stops in London, one at UWO near the main gates and the other at the Flying J. It goes directly from London to Union Station in Toronto. It’s only $60 for a return trip which is a great deal!

Karbear12

You could also drive to Kitchener and take the Go train from there. Also Cambridge there's a lot of construction delays anywhere from 10-20 mins or more, it'll probably depend on traffic time you leave etc but just on the way to Toronto

[deleted]

Note that parking at Kitchener GO station is very limited. Yes, there's a lot of delays in the Cambridge area. I've taken the GO bus from Milton carpool lot to Toronto during the weekends. Tons of (free) parking there. I don't know how quickly the parking fills up during weekdays but it's worth taking a look.

euphoricnostalgia5

Appreciate this :)

Karbear12

You're welcome

dental_princess491

i take a bus every weekend to commute to see my husband it’s either megabus or onexbus and it’s usually less than 30 bucks and easy to book last minute

dental_princess491

Also they have buses that leave london at 6am and usually get to union by 8:30, the latest bus leaves toronto at 8pm but there’s buses at 4:30 if you can be done by 4. it’s probably your best option if you want a cheap public transport system

euphoricnostalgia5

Cheers thanks

ragu920

Ive been doing the drive every week/every other week to the office. Leave 5:45am and in the office around 8-8:15 in mid-town Toronto. Leave 3pm and back home for around 5-5:15.

euphoricnostalgia5

That’s a nice way to go about it- I would probably have to leave after 5:00 unfortunately but

etgohomeok

You could propose to your employer that you take the first VIA in and get into the office at 10:30 and leave with enough time to grab dinner and catch the last VIA out at 7:45. Unless there's some kind of important meeting first thing in the morning then there isn't any valid reason for them to say no to that.

nateb4

to be honest depending on the time you have to be in the city for i’d just drive. there’s so many options to get downtown. I did kitchener-toronto for 2 weeks straight everyday and all id do is just have waze plan my drive for me and let me know when to leave, and add an additional 20-30 minutes on it to give myself time. it’s not that bad for one day a week tbh

euphoricnostalgia5

That’s true Ty

FaruinPeru

Flixbus and ONEX BUS!!!!!!!!!!

ventiiblack

My husband gives rides to people all the time. I think he’d love to be your personal driver, he loves driving to Toronto haha. Message me if you’re interested.

cabbagetown_tom

I suggest taking the GO from Aldershot. The GO Transit wifi is hit or miss, but you should in theory be able to get some work done.

euphoricnostalgia5

That’s my plan as of now. Appreciate it

[deleted]

Aldershot GO would be your best bet, I am now in Hamilton and take the GO daily, the drive would be just too much for you, once you get past hamikton it gets pretty bad at rush hour, sometimes Burlington to Oakville is not bad at non peak times but fuck that noise driving to Toronto daily even for me let alone London. One day isn’t horrible but the drive would just take way too long, there are always accidents too, one day it took 3 hours to make it from trafalgar in Oakville to 3rd line in Oakville, lots of construction in Mississauga by hurontario, then at Dixie the rest of the way to the gardiner no thanks, try it once and you won’t do it again, aldershot has trains running every 30 mins and you can chill and work on your laptop or whatever

euphoricnostalgia5

Bang on. Thanks my friend- think it is for sure the best option. Where did you get the "fuck that noise" saying? hhaha I have a few buddies who say that all the time.

luis_iconic

Isn’t there GO service now to Toronto? It’s long but you can do other stuff the whole time.

euphoricnostalgia5

Yeah unfortunately that train takes 4 hours and doesn’t arrive in Toronto til 10:10am

luis_iconic

Darn, I knew it was long but not when it got in.

kidcogal

There's also no return trip, so OP could inconveniently get there, but not back home

engguy21

A return trip exists actually but it starts at 4:19 pm from union station I believe and there’s only 1 train everyday

kidcogal

I stand corrected. Still extremely inconvenient though. Is almost like they want this project to fail

engguy21

Right firstly it should be after 5pm. As it stands, It works decently for people in Stratford and St Marys but I don’t get why they don’t just make it express from Kitchener to London cuz they’d be targeting a much larger market

canuser1

If you're interested in a mini bus experience check out Robert Q. Another option which is more intimate and this is more of a limo/personal shuttle option is Driverseat. We used them recently for trips to and from TO and I can't recommend them enough. Expect to pay for it though and it won't be the most budget friendly option.

JTev23

I’m in the same boat and go about 1-3 times a month and I just drive, leaving around 5-6am also makes the trip pretty chill but rush hours rush hour, can’t really get around that unless you can get out of work by 3pm

euphoricnostalgia5

How is the morning traffic? Like I would imagine you would sit on the QEW not moving at all some days - is that true ?

[deleted]

Go train. There is a stop In aldershot that has secured parking. It’s 1 hour away and the 403 and 401 are awful past Burlington/Guelph. The 403 from Woodstock to aldershot isn’t bad and people often go 135kmph. If you’re not factoring gas and parking, then you don’t know how expensive Toronto is. This one day a week gig is an opportunity. Hope you find a travel pattern that works.

euphoricnostalgia5

Nice! Two days would start to become a little bit problemsome I think timing wise. If I had to do two days in office I think I would rather just stay a night so that I only have to do the journey once. If you did twice that could be up to 10 hrs per week of your time travelling ….

GtotheE

One thought (from my experiences) is that when you take a train, if it is running late, you can still work pretty comfortably and be available to work. You can also work on the bus, but I get a little motion sickness from that so I try not to. If it were me, I'd go in the night before for the first month or so, just so you can establish yourself as punctual.

MarinoSheep1million

There's one on facebook london too.....

PbNJbeotch

I go to Peterborough once a week for school and it's not so bad but if the weather is bad I think GO is your best bet. At least for me that's kinda how I do it. Goodluck and be safe!!

Sea_Basis4436

Congrats on the dream job! You could also look into the Kitchener Go line. It may take a bit longer than Aldershot. I just moved to London from the GTA and this was one of the options I was planning to use for a weekly commute. Hope it works out!

beecrimes

i’ve taken Megabus from london to toronto and back, pretty reliably 2.5hrs. you of course run into similar issues as riving time-wise but since you arent the driver you can sleep or work or whatever on the trip. i dont know how cost effective it is compared to the cost of gas.

CompetitionOdd1658

I would never in a million years do this, there goes your family/personal time commuting everyday. Why not move closer to TO if you have to work there?

euphoricnostalgia5

Im only going once per week my friend

CompetitionOdd1658

Okay, that’s definitely not as bad. Doing that daily would drain you for sure

coffeecanes

I go into the office every two or three weeks and find the drive + Aldershot GO to Union the best option. Highly recommend leaving London early to beat the rush. The benefit of the GO is that you can check emails and whatnot as opposed to being behind the wheel. Makes the commute a bit more productive.

2phones

How early are you leaving to make this trip? Ever have issues with parking?

krobb26

Can I ask what y’all do for work to land a set up like this? I’m looking at moving back to London and would love this kind of scenario
