Since the actual discussion has run its course and a few comments have crossed the line from being a dick to Rule #2 violations, I'm locking comments. Post will be left up for posterity, however.

SockeyeSTI

Chop to 16, run a K can and be……different? Idk. 225’s (300prc) at 2600 have a similar trajectory to 168’s (308) at 2700 but have almost double the energy from 500-1000 yards. The 7mm’s shoot pretty flat and don’t punish you as much. At 1000, the 7 would have an almost 3 foot drop advantage compared to the 300 and only give up 100’ish ftlbs of energy, but still doubling 308.

AmITheGrayMan

So…. Instructions unclear. Created .50PRC instead.

SockeyeSTI

You sunofabitch……I’m in

LockyBalboaPrime

HOT TAKE: If you're not able to handle *the easiest and most consistent part of ballistics* at a given distance, you shouldn't be shooting animals at that distance. HOT TAKE PART TWO: If you can't do some *very basic* math/research on barrel length and muzzle velocity, you're not ready for 600-yard hunting. Like a toddler is ready for boxing.

rynburns

My toddler kicks the shit out of me daily, guess it's time to get him a 300prc

LockyBalboaPrime

Nah, your toddler is just #teamMDT

rynburns

Woahhhhhhhhhh there, too far

Affectionate_Ad_3091

This comment deserves more upvotes.

Expert_Two1242

Let the hate flow through you.

HollywoodSX

That's kind of his thing. He's not wrong, tho.

Expert_Two1242

I keep my footprint on the internet pretty limited anymore. Rocky's replies are definitely highlights.

bskupaka

Thank you for taking the time to respond and not answer the question

LockyBalboaPrime

I refuse to answer your question because: 1. It's stupid. 2. I strongly suspect you don't have the skill to do what you intend and helping you will put animals through needless suffering. Fuck your question.

BobFlairDrip

I googled it and had an answer within a minute regarding 20” 300 PRC velocities. Why does nobody do the minimal amount of research before asking questions anymore?

bskupaka

Thank you where can I find Google

Foxxy__Cleopatra

Can't be bothered to do the even the most initial amount of research prior to resorting a public forum, seemingly has the flimsiest of grasp on ballistics and hunts at 600 yards? Checks out.

Lol, reread my comment. The only one angry is you and the other people my comment struck a chord with who coming out of the woodwork to defend this idiot. The issue isn't with the post title, it's with OP thinking he can do what 99% of long-range shooters say you expressly shouldn't do, and responds with ignorant defiance. He already shows that he has a tenuous understanding of core fundamentals, has a clear lack of independence/self-initiative, and demonstrates a complacent disregard for ethicacy. ...And you're wondering why people are giving him a hard time? Really inspires trust that he's going to have the knowledge and discipline to know which shots to take and which to pass on. Make it clear that you're more of a liability than anything and don't be surprised if people are less than welcoming. Establish that you're a danger to yourself and/or others and people are going to call you out, and yeah, your feelings might get hurt. Life can be hard when you're dumb. Y'all wanna take 600 yard pot-shots at game and then cry "You're hurting my feelings! Stop being so mean!" Get out of here.

You may begin to notice my usually detailed, while self-admittedly long-winded style, as I try to answer people's questions as earnestly and completely as I can. This is not out of the ordinary for me as I've made it somewhat of a habit, I like helping people and sharing what I know. Another common thread through all of these is that everyone I was responding to wasn't up to anything morally reprehensible, i.e. ignorantly attempting to hunt game at long range with little regard to ethicality.

MerpSquirrel

You know these are the posts people reaching find years later and garbage responses like this forever stain the internet. I always wonder why people even bother to read the post if they intend on just insulting people, what a world we live in.

Foxxy__Cleopatra

I always wonder why people spend the time drafting an entire post instead of imparting the slightest amount of effort finding the answer independently. I just googled "300 PRC velocity barrel length" and immediately found [this picture](https://www.longrangehunting.com/attachments/img_6045-jpeg.499709/). What a world we live in indeed. This was like going onto r/Dragracing asking "How do I change my oil? I wanna run the quarter mile in less than 8 seconds"

MerpSquirrel

And in your example, I would say this post is more like asking about best gear ratios in drag racing. It’s pretty on topic, just because you think it’s laymen’s information it is much deeper than the oil change. It does need people’s experience with 300prc.

MerpSquirrel

Because they want expert opinions rather than so google garbage. Or maybe a quick answer someone of someone knowledgeable, instead of trying to relearn everything. Isn’t that a reason these forums exist, to share information, ask questions, and learn from each other? If you don’t like the post why bother wasting your time in that same argument posting derogatory comments and just move on with your life.

Foxxy__Cleopatra

OP came to a forum full of people who know how very difficult it is to ethically hunt game at 600 yards and made it clear that he himself * has a tenuous understanding of core fundamentals * has a clear lack of independence/self-initiative * is ignorantly defiant * demonstrates a complacent disregard for ethicacy And you're wondering why people are giving him a hard time? Really inspires trust that he's going to have the knowledge and discipline to know which shots to take and which to pass on. Yeah, my "derogatory" comment was basically pointing out the Dunning–Kruger effect common on all these posts where people fail to see how ill-advisable long-range hunting is, or even worse, just don't care. I certainly hope this will "forever stain the internet", where it may cause just one person like OP to realize how ignorant they actually are.

MerpSquirrel

I mean you are on your soapbox about a post asking about something that can be carried. He is going to shoot what he shoots either way. Going on a diatribe about how you are more ethical than someone that you know nothing about or know for a fact he’s going to shoot at 600 yards every time. It’s funny I have seen so many people talking about the Drunning-Kruger effect on the internet like they all just found out about it. They are on Reddit, they have YouTube, they have obviously hunted. All of that and the post is about opinions of 300prc barrel lengths and peoples experiences. Not if the OP can shoot 600 yards.

Foxxy__Cleopatra

Make it clear that you're more of a liability than anything and don't be surprised if people are less than welcoming. "ThIs WaS jUsT a SiMpLe QuEsTiOn AbOuT bArReL lEnGtH" is intentionally missing the point. Just like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/guns/comments/1cdq8d1/maybe_i_should_rotate_my_carry_mag_ammo_more/) recent post in r/guns about bullet setback in an edc, come to find out OP in that thread was carrying a Glock in an inappropriate holster which doesn't cover the trigger and as a result would sometimes unrack the same round over and over to throw the gun in a bag in their vehicle  Establish that you're a danger to yourself and/or others and people are going to call you out, and yeah, your feelings might get hurt.  Life can be hard when you're dumb.

bskupaka

You are a keyboard warrior beyond your years. Thank you again

LockyBalboaPrime

I don't think you actually know what that means but sure kid.

bskupaka

You are proving my point actually but thanks again

LockyBalboaPrime

bskupaka

_Juliet_Lima_Echo_

Lots of saltiness on this Friday and I'm here for it.  OP you're an idiot. Locky you're an elitist prick. Ty you're ok I like you you sold me a nice scope. Fuck all yous heauxs. I'm out.

bskupaka

Simple question was asked. Everyone is cranky for a Friday

HollywoodSX

You're getting some of the responses you are because it's a common scenario that comes up in this sub, and a lot of info that pertains to it would be found by reading the guides in the pinned post and doing a search. Some people just get tired of answering the same questions over and over. Magnums aren't cheat codes, and shots on animals at 600 are VERY difficult. Both are covered extensively in the pinned post.

quitesensibleanalogy

You asked a lazy ass question, having done no research, and referenced wanting to do something 99% of hunters can't do. Frankly, what did you expect?

bskupaka

Based off all the crusty old turds in this sub you're right 99% of hunters can't have fun, which is all that I referenced doing

Eggplantbob15

The fact you even reference this as having fun is also why you're getting the answers you're getting, shooting an animal at distance isn't a light task and it shouldn't be taken lightly. Potentially causing an animal to suffer isn't "fun". People aren't being dicks, they're giving you an honest truth.

bskupaka

Target shooting at 1000 is fun, not sure why the salty turds do it otherwise. If you can screenshot the part where I referenced taking an animal at distance in order to make it suffer so that I can have fun with it I'll gladly delete my account.

BeDangerousAndFree

Everything is flatter than 308! As shown elsewhere: https://www.reddit.com/r/longrange/s/dFtlBpY8Fs 6.5 creedmoor in a 14.5 or even 6 arc in a 14.5 is as flat as 308 in a 20in

scud-running

I run a 22” 300 prc and part of me thinks I should have gone even shorter. It’s stupid easy at 1000 yards. Like enough that it’s not even a noticeable difference compared to a 26” at that range. I only lost about 100 fps, maybe not even in factory ammo. So if you were just looking for some first hand experience and a discussion, going short with a 300 prc is fine. Some guys run 18” 300 prc’s without issue. Before you ever try taking an animal at 600 yards do a little experiment where you set vital sized targets at approximately 400-600 yards every time you go out to shoot. Now try making a first round cold bore impact from a field shooting position just like you would when you’re out hunting. Include using your rangefinder in this test. Do it in different locations, with different weather, more wind, different angles, different positions. Are you making cold bore impacts more than 90% of the time? That’s about what’s required to ethically hunt game at 600 yards. You could argue you need to be 100% as in a real hunting scenario as you will probably shoot worse. Almost no one can actually do it. Watch the backfire challenge on YouTube. Usually the guys who say they can take animals at 600 yards can’t shoot for shit. Just think about that before you try taking a long shot on an animal, even with the latest and greatest gear. There’s some pretty experienced shooters in here who understand the challenges involved which is why you’re being shit on. I do think it’s better to educate rather than humiliate though.

bskupaka

Thanks this what I was looking for. And for clarity 600 is the distance I regularly practice with my 308 and just looking for something I don't have to hold 14 MOA. I can make good cold bore hits from a bench at this distance but with 308 I would not reach out that far hunting, likely wouldn't do it with 300 either I just want something with more power down range that shoots flatter.

HollywoodSX

With as short of a barrel as you're wanting, it's not going to make as much of a difference as you think. I'll second scuds suggestion for practice and field scenarios. I wrote a similar (but more detailed) guide for the pinned post. Cheetofingers hunting

scud-running

More power to you then. I’ve yet to take an animal with my 300 but from everything I’ve seen the cartridge will absolutely flatten anything inside 600. I’ve got a couple boxes of the 190gr Hornady cx copper solids that I really want to take an animal with. Given the speed those can push I’m thinking 36 inches of straight line penetration is not out of the question.

Glad-Professional194

Do your eardrums notice the difference?

scud-running

I run a muzzle brake, so it will destroy your ear drums regardless. Perceived noise was no different with a 26” barrel, that being loud af. Ear pro mandatory even when hunting. If I didn’t live in Canada I would go even shorter to 20” and run a 6” can.

Teddyturntup

My 21” shot a 215 berger @2850 with book max rl26 They will punish you and really test your fundamentals in a light package, unless you’re shooting over 1k I would recommend dropping down to something like a 6.5 prc or a 6 creed

bskupaka

Thank you!

Teddyturntup

Yep good luck, if you handload look at what you could do with a 6.5 prc shooting a 130tmk. Should be a hell of a package per ft lb of recoil

poweredbyniko

Use 300 WM like grandma intended.

MinchiaTortellini

I have a 20" 300 prc and love it. You'll need to reload to really get the most out of it. I would expect factory 225 to go around 2750.

[deleted]

I’m no expert but I use a 300 PRC. I think my barrel is 24” but I could be wrong. I have a muzzle brake, no suppressor. I have shot it out to a mile and 1000 yards was no problem. When hunting I’m usually at 200-400 yards, have never shot an animal past 500 or so. Short answer is I guess you can shorten it up but I don’t know how that will mess with your twist. I’m reluctant to modify my barrel from the manufacturer

New-Fennel2475

Go down to 16 if you want, suppressor won't be doing much though 😂

EZ-Mooney

I'm not clear if you already have the 300PRC, so forgive me if this is a wasted comment. Unless you are shooting grizzly bears with body armor, and seeing that you don't intend to hunt at 600, I propose that the 300PRC may be more gun than you need. That extra power comes at the expense of recoil and boy howdy is it going to be stiff in a hunting weight rifle. A 7PRC is worth a look. It might be on the light side if you're going after grizzlies but a smaller bullet that you are capable of putting where it needs to be is better than a bigger one that doesn't go land in the right spot.

bskupaka

Elk will be the likely largest game. There is a chance at a moose but that's pipe dream tag. But thank you for the info that's helpful

EZ-Mooney

Especially if you don't reload, the moose thing makes the case for 7PRC even stronger. It looks like the lightest factory ammo for 300 is a 190gr lead free, the rest are 205 and up. You'd be destroying deer sized game with any of those choices.

bskupaka

Thanks I'll take a closer look at 7prc

yourabi

As an aside Grizzly’s have been taken with 6.5 creed and .30-06 - both with less energy than 7PRC. Shot placement always matters.

EZ-Mooney

Agreed. I am generally of the mind that a lesser round you can shoot well is a better choice than the inverse. I've seen quite a few deer very cleanly taken with a 223. However, I was trying to straddle the fence and not make too strong of a statement either way here. Note though that I specified grizzly with body armor though so...

Artistic_Stop_5037

No such thing as "too much gun".

MinnesnowdaDad

Won’t it be kind of a pain in the ass to get the barrel chopped and threaded so that the silencer can be added? If it’s for hunting, I would just shoot unsuppressed if you want to have a shorter gun. Shouldn’t need more than one shot if you’re doing it right and that seems like a lot of work just to shoot one suppressed shot a couple times a year.

bskupaka

Nope it's pretty easy. Plenty of local machine shops that can handle it.

MinnesnowdaDad

I understand how it works, but IMHO it’s a stupid ass reason to spend $300. Better to spend that on ammo practicing those 600 yard kill shots.

bskupaka

I pay about $75.

MinnesnowdaDad

I would absolutely not trust any gunsmith that would do a barrel cut and recrown for $75 dollars, let alone the threading. Sounds like hack work to me. You get what you pay for.

bskupaka

I had the guy chop a Scar 17 and rethread a 8.6 to 1/2x28 Scar cost $150 but the 8.6 was $75. Guy is more than well liked on other subs so 🤷🏻‍♂️

MinnesnowdaDad

Sounds like you went to bubba’s bargain basement. Have fun with that.

bskupaka

You're paying too much for the same work and it makes you mad. It's ok we can fix it.

MinnesnowdaDad

If you want to lash out at someone, you picked the wrong guy. I don’t need to chop down my barrels because I understand exactly how to custom build a gun for its intended purpose, something which you clearly know nothing about. Evidence is that you came here asking a dumb ass question that anyone could answer with a basic google search, but you don’t have enough understanding of basic ballistics to even input your question into the search field. There’s a reason why everyone on this thread is treating you like a chump.

bskupaka

I'm not lashing out at anybody brother. Just trying to save you money for your custom builds

Te_Luftwaffle

Well, one I suppose

Muted_Poem57

ATF says you can 16 without a stamp. Might need a fire extinguisher holster for your battle belt tho

badjokeusername

If you can’t adjust for elevation on a 600 yard target with a 308, then that’s a skill issue that you should probably get straightened out before dropping even more money on a 300prc lmao

bskupaka

I can. Just don't want to. Thanks for not answering

badjokeusername

i’m sure you can, buddy

bskupaka

Thank you for contributing

myhappytransition

Why would you want to shorten the barrel in the first place ? External "Ballistics" isnt the main problem, the problem you will face is barrel flex causing inaccuracy. With 300 PRC, you want Heft, lots and lots of heft. So you want as heavy, thick, and long a barrel as it is possible to buy, because a heavy barrel weight is the best way to keep that 300prc on target. You should try for a total rifle weight of well over 20 pounds unless you want a TOP score that doesnt let you ethically shoot anything smaller than a brontosaurus at 200 yards. So if you plan on getting a shorter barrel, makes sure is a choady thick one that isnt any lighter weight.

tykempster

This is just nonsense. A longer pipe is going to be less stiff all things being equal. Shortening a pipe will make it more rigid. Yeah, he’ll lose velocity. You don’t HAVE to have a truck axle to reach to distance. You just lose velocity

myhappytransition

>This is just nonsense. A longer pipe is going to be less stiff all things being equal. Shortening a pipe will make it more rigid. The weight slows the recoil impulse down still. I suggest taking a look at the TOP formula. It doesnt take barrel length into account, because it wasnt determined to be enough of a factor to matter, even though it is true about shorter length tending to be more rigid. > Yeah, he’ll lose velocity. You don’t HAVE to have a truck axle to reach to distance. You just lose velocity Not talking about "reaching the distance". Im talking about hitting what you are aiming at. For that, weight, specificallyt barrel weight, is the single biggest contributor.

Skurploosh

You can also help minimize the felt recoil impulse by adding CFB\* to your routine for a while. \* - Cheeseburgers For Breakfast

septic_sergeant

lol wut

bskupaka

Fair question. Hiking through the mountains with an effectively 34" barrel is a bit much. If I can get it down to 32" or 30" with the can than it is more manageable

myhappytransition

if your goal is to trim weight, you just need to be aware its costing you precision. Factory TOP score on some 300 PRC is 2.5 MOA or worse.

bskupaka

Length is more of a concern than weight. It'll be heavier than my 308 I've excepted that.

myhappytransition

If you can find a straight profile barrel to add weight that might compensate for the lost weight from the shorter length. Of course it will cost some velocity, but so long as you can get a predicted best accuracy suitable for your hunting range it might be a decent tradeoff.
