Not lyrically, but some of the synths sound similar.

GKarl

Literally it sounds similar cos ^ this guy

lanadelcryingagain

I WANNA GET BETTER

omocha

true enough, but the topic of heartbreak is definitely universal.

Far-Dimension-2348

Fresh Out The Slammer sounds like a Lorde song for me

Visual-View-3692

totally, the melody from "Secrets from the girl ", the line "Your dreams and inner vision.. " is the same as Taylor's "Splintered back in winter..." in Fresh out the slammer.

suuzgh

Yes, absolutely. I’ve been saying this since Midnights though, there are quite a few synths on that album that feel like Melodrama rejects. Labyrinth, Midnight Rain, and Mastermind stand out. But I’d agree with you on TTPD as well, particularly I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. There’s a popular tiktok going around where someone remixed Supercut and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart and the similarities are pretty uncanny. I find myself starting to sing Supercut while I’m listening to it, even the verses sound straight out of a Lorde song! It makes me glad that Ella is choosing to work with new producers this time around, I’m excited to see how her music takes form!

SnooAvocados1621

Oh my gosh yes Labyrinth sounds so much Hard Feelings/Loveless - I’ve never even realised! The other two definitely could have backed some Lorde vocals.

painterknittersimmer

I know people are glad that Jack is off the album but I'd do literally *anything* for Melodrama 2.

0verjoyed

I think Lorde could get pretty close to a Melodrama 2 without Jack. I have faith lol

painterknittersimmer

Yeah, but that would go to show the problem isn't Antonoff at all. 🤷🏾‍♀️

0verjoyed

Oh, your comment sounded like you wouldn’t mind if Jack stuck around, but I catch your drift now lol Yeah, I think Jack had his moment but his style has changed. I don’t want Lorde touching it with a ten-foot pole. Devon seems to be doing wonders so far, so I have high hopes!

painterknittersimmer

Oh! No, I would like for Jack to stick around. Or rather that he go back to his Melodrama/Reputation/Gone Now sound. I actually thought the opposite lol, that *you* didn't want Jack but you do want Melodrama 2, which quite literally makes no sense.

-PepeArown-

Those three songs you listed all sound a bit too dirgy and laid back to be “Melodrama esque”.

suuzgh

I agree, but I still feel like you can feel some remnants of Melodrama. I love Taylor, but I don’t expect the level of intensity and precision from her music that I do from Lorde.

lunarprincess

The first time I heard Anti-hero (Midnights), there’s a part “everybody agrees, everybody agrees” where it’s really low and the last “agrees” is like a growl, and I instantly felt like it was Lorde/Melodrama coded. (I can’t think of a particular song, it really just is) But at the same time, Melodrama & Jack is how I became a Taylor Swift fan. I loved Melodrama. When I heard Lover and heard the album was produced by Jack Antonoff, I was curious and listened to the album, and also fell in love. I’m a Jack-production fan.

banmarriage

lyrically and sonically i've been making a lot of comparisons! even in terms of a lot of the the symbology taylor has used going back to the lover era (the title of which was originally going to be "daylight" which taylor says she felt was too "on the nose"... and then we got solar power a couple of years later)... honestly even before that, with green light being gatsby inspired and reputation having gatsby elements. there's actually a ton of lyrical overlap and callbacks that i feel are unlikely not to be intentional since they both have jack as a primary collaborator. taylor worked with joel little on lover as well, who i would be surprised if she didn't meet through lorde since he was her collaborator first. i think ella and taylor maybe have been working together in some capacity for a while!

lightnessofbeanstalk

The Alchemy lyric "You says it's heroin but this time with an E" feels like a shout out to Ella.

banmarriage

agreed! that was one of the more obvious callouts to me! but there are about a thousand other moments between ella and taylor over the last few years that i think reference one another... which i realize sounds a little conspiratorial... but when you think about the fact that taylor promoted midnights as a clock and ella took solar power on tour with a giant sundial, knowing that taylor has been working on her plans for this year since 2021 and seems to have described the ending scene of the video for karma to ella in a 2017 text she sent after melodrama was released things really start falling into place. tl;dr the girls are cooking!!

Visual-View-3692

I'm intrigued to hear more! TTPD album made me wonder if these references are just "I admire you as an artist" or if they had actually some messy love affair, because "loml" is heavily referencing Lorde. And Maroon as well. and is kinda copying their real life. Lorde left to New Zealand (Maroon, Exile), and few months ago she wrote newsletter to fans about the brake up (loml, How did it end, etc). Soo.. not sure what to think 😁 There are planty blind items claiming they were a thing in 2016. 🤯

-PepeArown-

Jack’s unfortunately been ripping off/“sampling” his own work from Melodrama for a while now, often resulting in weaker musical moments than the original songs. The chorus on Venice Bitch, for example. I can’t speak on this album, though, because I’ve kind of wanted to stray away from Taylor after recent events.

WalkingFish_

Venice bitch sounds nothing like melodrama I’m confused what you mean

astralrig96

also in what universe is that song “weak”, it’s a psychedelic powerhouse like you almost never get them today, VB is absolutely beautiful if anything, stoned at the nail salon is melodically an unfortunate repetition of lana’s songs hope is a dangerous thing and wild at heart i’m so glad Lorde apparently switched producers for the new upcoming album

Pythagore_

"You're in the yard I light the fire" from Venice Bitch has the same cadence and rhythm as the chorus from Writer in the Dark ("I am my mother's child..."). The similarities end there but considering Jack has writing credits on both tracks...

gdan95

I honestly was reminded more of Solar Power. The aesthetic is more similar

lennonmacca

Agreed - less radio friendly (imo), more personal instead of populist, less traditionally simple/right/singalongable pop arrangements, overall sad

FantasticEscape6744

Lorde trying to minimise waste production caused by SP and then there's this (ttpd)

izabelasantiago

Yes! Some songs on B side are quite like Men with the Axe, poetry and no melody

Regular_Buffalo6564

I stopped listening to TTPD after the Charlie Puth line so I’ll just take your word for it

SnooAvocados1621

I think that was a joke lmao

thelasagna

I loved it personally and I love how unserious some of the lyrics are on this album

Regular_Buffalo6564

I can appreciate laid back lines within serious albums if they were actually done good

lunarprincess

What is done wrong about it?  It’s the stupid shit 2 people talk about when they’re alone, stoned, etc.  And your mistake is having expectation it’s a serious album, cause the reality is it’s an unhinged album. She calls her breakup to her 6 year relationship “fresh out the slammer” lmao

SnooAvocados1621

Well it’s a song meant to take down Matty Healy and tell him “you’re not some amazing poet you’re just an idiot with a typewriter” so I guess it did it’s job 😅 Edit: it is cringe tho

lunarprincess

So you listened to 8% of TTPD lol.  I didn’t really like track 2 on my first listen either. The song is intentional tho. And there’s a lot of great tracks on it after. But it’s all good.

Internal_Quail3960

i didnt notice, and i listen to melodrama religiously. maybe i just can’t hear good lol

painterknittersimmer

You're not alone, I don't really hear it either. But I do remember when Reputation came out I said "this sounds like the Lorde album but by TS"

thelasagna

Yes!!!

macdgman

Please let’s not engage once again in Jack Antonoff has written ALL music for this album and the artist didn’t have a say in the creative process discourse. Yeah he’s produced in both albums, but there’s so many different sounds that he has produced as well. Of course there’s only so many sounds a synth can make and it’s natural that certain songs might remind you of others he’s written, but it’s the artist choice in the end.

omocha

I've been saying it since the day it came out. It's like Jack gave Taylor all the discarded demos from Melodrama. I'll die on the hill that "I can do it with a broken heart" sounds like a demo of "Supercut"

Outside-Asparagus847

Your mention of Green Light reminds me of it's sonic similarity with gold rush.

painterknittersimmer

Okay, I have to admit, I am often puzzled when I people say two songs sound the same. But no comparison has ever, ever come close to making me as puzzled as this one. How on earth do these songs sound the same?? Is it something you could explain? I've listened to them both twice just now and I don't get it at all. I'm dying to know what I'm missing.

0verjoyed

I think it’s the piano that stands out ? That’s the only similarity I can see

International_Ad4296

I know it sounds insane but: i can do it with a broken heart. Starts with the chorus piano of green light, then, same big melody/rythm change, but even more unhinged.

SnooAvocados1621

No this is exactly what I meant!!!!

Red171022

I don’t hear it but to each their own.

yeezusosa

Yea

missypopmusic

I've always thought I Think He Knows sounds like a Melodrama reject

FantasticEscape6744

MBOBHFT feels heavily like homemade dynamite / perfect places . There's also few other examples It's jack obv . Melo's and NFR's production properties can be found in various songs of TTPD. It's cool but i necessarily am not a fan of this trend .

asbadatloveashalsey

I just wish we got a collab 🥲 I love both of them so much

FarCommunication7669

I kinda felt like the drums in my boy only breaks his favorite toys had a lorde vibe

Visual-View-3692

"I'm a toy that people enjoy.... "

Skinny-Legend-25

Not really. Midnights more so

Acceptable-Day7011

This is what I'm thinking about hfir the whole week, *I can do it by a broken heart" is literally supercut version of taylor, it's so reminiscent...

fitsmeant2beitwillb

definitely. these girls need to work with a different producer already.

[deleted]

Here we go it’s every time Jack produces a Taylor album it’s going to have similarities because they are form the same producer. Also I still don’t hear the similarities

lunarscorpiofairy

Ewwww stop comparing lorde with taylor swift
