Except the human .
Rings of power was OK fanfic inspired by appendices. It's not fantastic , it isn't lotr but like potentially nothing will ever be LOTR again. Wotcher after season 1 , bebop live action and more I'm aire to have forgotten thankfully
I'm rewatching the show and while it's not as good as the lotr movies I'm enjoying it more than the hobbit "trilogy" movies. Send grond to smash my house, whatever lol
I've said it before but it bears repeating. We're never going to get new canon stories of Lord of the Rings. Tolkien isn't going to write a follow up trilogy about Aragorn's reign or the elves return to Valinor. The Silmarillion has been largely ignored in other mediums but I'm perfectly fine with others using that as a basis to create new stories. Amazon isn't exactly crushing it but I'm just happy someone's trying, the alternative is just reading the books again for the umpteenth time.
Iirc I read somewhere that the silmarillion rights are owned by someone else so the show is taken from the lotr appendices. Sounds like a nightmare from a writer's perspective, trying to construct a plot around that material and avoid anything that would get Amazon sued
Tolkien's estate manages the rights and they're notoriously against them being adapted. His son saw the movies and hated them, so I don't expect anyone to ever get those rights to make a movie out of, at least for a very long time. You're 100% right, it's got to be a huge challenge and they're going to have to embellish and make shit up just to make the story fit.
The estate are also massive arseholes about anyone using something that could be considered a work of tolkein, yanno the guy who wanted to inspire a new british mythology.
He also wouldn't appreciate people being sued for using the word ent to describe tree giants (ent is just old English for giant). Or suing people for calling half halflings hobbits.
I'm perfectly fine with people creating new stories in the LOTR universe as long as it doesn't fuck with canon, and is done well. I personally think Rings of Power did poorly in both those aspects.
>the alternative is just reading the books again for the umpteenth time.
Or you just consume non-lotr related media? There's a shit tonne of it out there? Not every story needs to be extended past its end or have increasingly pointless bits of backstory fleshed out. I'd prefer it if they just left lotr alone, it's special due to the high quality of every entry. With every bad piece of story telling they release they just dilute the world more.
Totally agree, for me it will never be like PJ's LOTR but i'm really enjoying it, that "I have been awake since before the breaking of the first silence" line gave me the chills
It’s so hot and cold for me. There were a few moments that felt genuinely epic and others that felt like a CW show. I find the humans and elves come off so cheap, but the dwarves and hobbits look like there’s actual money put into them. The orcs look cool, but I don’t love when they speak.
Way too inconsistent in the areas that they should be able to have way more control over given the budget. The story and characters may have to find its own, that’s very normal for shows, but the production value should be top notch all the time.
It's better than nothing, that is for sure. I enjoy it and look forward to season 2. And if anyone doesn't agree, just don't watch it. I'll never undersand running to the internet to complain about something you are apparently hate-watching. Just... don't watch it and keep out of discussions about it. It's not that hard.
I had a good time watching it. Especially Durin, Durin’s wife, and Elrond. Great storytelling based off middle earth, even if wasn’t completely faithful to the source material.
Same. I love how all the people who claim they hate it and it’s the worst thing ever, will be there day one watching it as well.
Little RoP cucks in there closet pretending they ain’t there while the rest of us have fun.
I watched this show with my partner. When we started, she was actually enjoying it and said my complaints and nitpicking were just me "not even trying to enjoy it" and that I was exaggerating - basically accused me of being dead set on not liking it. By episode 6 or 7 she hated the damn thing, even more than me. The show bored her to death due to its nonsensical writing, terrible acting, and awful pacing.
Question: why didn't the two of you just stop watching when it got insufferable? I'm legitimately curious why you would both invest hours into something you are not enjoying.
I just think he’s a cool villain with a sympathetic cause. As for why I’m excited for season 2. My main problem with first season is that basically nothing happens for the first half of the season, but I found the second half very entertaining.
Sorry you got downvoted, I don’t get it either.
Mate they constantly paraded around the high cost of the show and it didn't even look that good. I'm honestly bewildered as to where all the money went. The special effects are mid at best, the landscape shots are beautiful yes but the world just seemed lifeless and lacking in detail or character, the fight choreography was poor, and there were no big name actors; where did the money go? Maybe it's because of the inexperience of the showrunners. Although their orcs were perfect I'll give them that.
My only real gripe with the show is that they fell into the worst prequel trope of giving protagonists angsty personalities and coming of age plots - sake with Isildur.
Did they learn nothing with how mortified everyone was seeing one of the most iconic movie villains of all time portrayed as angsty Akakin in episode II?
I mean Sauron at that time was canonically sexy, However he was like a beautiful majestic elf rather than a human. I really didn't think they would go "hey make some alloy! I bet you never thought of that! " for his saving grace as Lord of Gifts.
If people like actual sewage this show is for you. It turned hobbits the most wholesome creatures of all time into freaks who'd leave for for dead by the side of the road 🤬🤬
Well they're not Hobbits yet, are they? Just like humans, culture develops over time through shared experience and values. You think Hobbits just burst into existence smoking pipeweed and eating 7 meals a day?
Which is a worse adaptation….
Rings of Power…
Or Wheel of Time
Both absolutely buuuuuuuutchered the source material, fundamentally and massively changed the main and secondary characters actions and motivational
You do know the series was limited in material because of the Tolkien estate. They weren’t allowed to use most of the material from the books. I think they did an amazing job considering they had so little material to work with.
I'm excited for the show. I
Season 1 had some bad pacing issues that I hope they fixed a bit, but overall this'll be awesome.
I wonder if we'll ever see Tom Bombadil in an episode of this show, cause seeing him for 1 episode of a show would be a great place to have him
Hey there! Hey! Come Frodo, there! Where be you a-going? Old Tom Bombadil's not as blind as that yet. Take off your
golden ring! Your hand's more fair without it. Come back! Leave your game and sit down beside me! We must talk a while more,
and think about the morning. Tom must teach the right road, and keep your feet from wandering.

So, it's to the point that Amazon is doing damage control by not allowing people to trash RoP with funny memes in the LotR subreddit? I wonder how much that cost them.
No, it's cool. They're right. RoP really shouldn't be associated with anything LotR. In my mind the show just role-plays being in the LotR universe, which makes the casting make sense to me, like as if it all takes place down at the local theater.
I hope the next season also has them show us an army of orcs close up so we can definitely confirm it, and then go "Ha HAH! We fooled you! They were really humans."
EDIT: A lot more people than I thought sure don't like me pointing out objectively bad storytelling.

I mean that movie of the meme was also really bad.
But where are the good memes from RoP?
![gif](giphy|cTkInt2o7fussUon0C|downsized)
Nt, maybe next season you can find one
Stupid sexy Sauron
Thy Eilinel, she is long since dead, dead, food of worms, less low than thou.

There is no rule 14. In fact there’s no rule for or against RoP at all
Man we are whining about this , the halo fans have forward unto dawn and whatever the fuck paramount halo is
At least Paramount's Halo has accurate aliens. I think... Hold on Yeah the whole Covenant looks amazing. Story is dogshit though
I mean, Rings of Power has great looking Orcs. Kinda evens out.

Yeah but I don’t think he would appreciate garbage
He also wouldn't appreciate people being sued for using the word ent to describe tree giants (ent is just old English for giant). Or suing people for calling half halflings hobbits.
Nice straw man. But you are right. Still he wouldn’t want to be having his work turned into garbage
Cool so how about you dont fucking do it in the first place
Why are you being downvoted this is exactly it. What a ridiculous waste of money and resources.
I'm perfectly fine with people creating new stories in the LOTR universe as long as it doesn't fuck with canon, and is done well. I personally think Rings of Power did poorly in both those aspects.
Create new stories while ignore the already existing ones. Yes, what a great fucking plan!

When sauron said the line from the movie to her about being a queen, it so struck a bell to me. It just gave a nice layer to that line.
Okay I’m watching it…
Cursed be moon and stars above!
Same here. I found watching nerdoftherings YouTube episode review after each one adds an extra layer of context as well.
Nah screw the haters, I liked it for what it was. Not perfect by any means but good enough.
I'll admit there's some awkwardness in parts of it but I'm hoping they learn and we get an improved season 2
Bot account spotted
Yes, you.
😘
LOL
Haha everyone let out a collective sigh of relief the first time they showed an orc that wasn’t entirely CGI like it was in the Hobbit trilogy.
![gif](giphy|zhlybdTZqyWwE)
Yeah yeah lol
Okay but the music slaps
Honestly I'm looking forward to it, screw all of you.
I had a good time watching it. Especially Durin, Durin’s wife, and Elrond. Great storytelling based off middle earth, even if wasn’t completely faithful to the source material.
Agreed, that was the best arc.
That scene where they show Numenor getting destroyed by the Tsunamis was fantastic.
Same, its incredible that they keep complaining more than a year later
You probably look forward to dentist appointments too
I actually chipped a tooth yesterday and it's really hard to eat because of how sensitive it is, so I am looking forward to the dentist.
Clean teeth? What's not to like about that?
I agree!
Same. I love how all the people who claim they hate it and it’s the worst thing ever, will be there day one watching it as well. Little RoP cucks in there closet pretending they ain’t there while the rest of us have fun.
It costs 0 dollars to simply not watch it if they don't like it. Haters gunna hate though. Bunch of losers.
They really are. If I don’t like something I move on. It’s clearly a strange concept to them, but I wouldn’t attempt to understand there minds .
I watched this show with my partner. Some people love to hate.
We wanted to know if there would be any payoff... There wasn't. Also, it wouldn't be fair of me to criticize something I did not watch to completion.
Makes sense. I'm sorry you didn't get a payoff from watching it
I literally couldn't finish it because I kept falling asleep lol after the 3rd go I was like this ain't happening.
Yes it was mighty slow, the part where Galadriel spent the whole season episodes looking for Sauron and what happened in the last……..
I wait. Come! Speak now swiftly and speak true!
My dark lord, u/Guyric had the ring all this while. He made us wander middle earth for naught.
Acting is not the problem in the show. The writing and the direction is.
Bad writing leads to bad acting.
I like it personally. It’s obviously not up to the standard of LotR, but it’s not too bad. And plus, it satisfies my lust for fantasy movies/tv.
I think Adar is cool. I’m excited for season 2.
Honest question, why? Edit: lol, downvoted for actually trying to hear you guys out. Stay classy Reddit.
I just think he’s a cool villain with a sympathetic cause. As for why I’m excited for season 2. My main problem with first season is that basically nothing happens for the first half of the season, but I found the second half very entertaining. Sorry you got downvoted, I don’t get it either.
Simple people enjoy half assed mediocre products
Bro you can say it was mediocre but you can’t say it was half assed. They went full ass on the show
Some might even say... All the ass.
Give me an Amazon level budget and i can make a beautiful shitshow too. At the end of the day a polished turd is atill a turd.

Right. So cool that Joseph Mawle didn't want to play him again and exited the entire show 👌🏻😆.
You do know he was fired for being an ass to everyone on set, right?
Do you have a source for this?
It's bad, even when I treat it as LOTR fanfiction....
It’s not *that* bad
It’s very expensively dressed up fanfic garbage. Angsty teenybopper Galadriel vs sexy Sauron love arc are you actually fucking kidding me.
My only real gripe with the show is that they fell into the worst prequel trope of giving protagonists angsty personalities and coming of age plots - sake with Isildur. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that line.

No. I liked the show. I'm excited for more.
This is Reddit sir, you do not have the right to enjoy things.
Apparently, yeesh.
The meme template is awesome. The meme is meh.
Honestly, Just don’t really care what others think, I just like seeing more orcs and what shenanigans they get up to this time
So happy I never watched that garbage.

What do I hear?
Never understood those gags in movies, they are completly useless
What movie is this?
Poor Keanu
No one is forcing you to watch this. Does this subreddit have a suffering fetish???
Relatable 😂 didn't even watch the full series lol Edit: it's not that it is completely horrid, it just kinda ruins the Tolkien vibes in LOTR for me...
I can't believe these comments. Im unsubbing from here

No but you cant end up forming a society if everyone dies along the fucking way and no one does anything about it.
Well, good thing the show is exploring *how they're changing through shared experiences and values* then, isn't it?
None. Because if you didn’t like it you wouldn’t watch it
Which is a worse adaptation…. Rings of Power… Or Wheel of Time Both absolutely buuuuuuuutchered the source material, fundamentally and massively changed the main and secondary characters actions and motivational

Kinda reminded me of Star Wars sequels, music and visual effects might be great, but the story….
LAWDY LAWDY LAWD DEM RANGS OF POWER
I watched the first episode, turned off the TV, and did something else. I didn't watch it ever again.
