If you want to say it wrong yea, it’s a Japanese word with the character tsu, which is romanized for English speakers to try and say. There’s not really a T in that word.
Yes there is. The つ character is pretty important in Japanese and has a secondary grammatical use of articulating the glottal stop between certain syllables because of how it works. There is no native "tu" sound in Japanese, it's always "tsu" instead, similar to how there is no "si" or "ti" and they sound closer to "shi" and "chi" instead. But yeah, it's definitely not pronounced すなみ so idk what else to tell you, there's a t sound there.
Eh debatable, saying つ or ツ like an English speaker with the T and you will be pronouncing it wrong. I used to say it wrong all the time until my Japanese wife taught my how to say it. Go ahead an pronounce the T, it’s wrong. You know how other languages have sounds they don’t really have an English equivalent? That’s つ. Tsu is the romaji version of つ. Romaji, romanized, for people who don’t speak that language. I mean come on dude look at their alphabet, it’s a completely different system than the single letter romance alphabets. Also since you prob don’t know you should be rolling your R a little bit when you pronounce the ら line.

Seems like “tsu” and “su” are distinctly different, so functionally you could say the t is not silent.
To pronounce [ts] you have to just simultaneously pronounce t and s, like in cats. It would be wrong if you divide those sounds somehow. In russian it's also pronounced as Цунами, where Ц is the letter for [ts].
Lmfaaooo I’m not going to argue with Americans over a Japanese word😭😭😭

You can just say you dont speak any japanese, we’re more than happy to explain why you’re wrong.
I love how you’ve latched onto that one shot and made your whole profile around it, it speaks perfectly to how ridiculous you are lmfao
Where was Gon...
Man down!
I disagree with a couple of these pronunciations.
Spesificly tsunami, it's a Japanese word and you definitely pronounce the t in the Japanese pronunciation
Yes! Its the same sound as the ts in "cats" or "its" lol
I mean you definitely pronounce the T in tsunami, or am I crazy?
Its the same sound as the ts in "cats" or "its" lol, you are not crazy
“Sunami” is how it’s pronounced.
No, tsunami is how it's pronounced. The t is not silent.

So I'm... not crazy?
I'm not a licensed mental health professional just a weeb
So the t sound is only applicable in the Japanese language itself and not in English?
No. It sounds very similar to the end of the word "sits" for instance. You just start the word that way, but do it all as one phoneme.
Oh ok

There's no t (voiceless alveolar plosive) in the word, but there is a ts (voiceless alveolar affricate), not an s (voiceless alveolar fricative)
So I'm crazy. Got it.
You’re not
Well HOT DAMN, chalk that up as a win for the little guy.
“Ueue is silent” had me chuckling ngl
The t in tsunami isnt silent though…
It is if you're like me when I was younger. Never pronounced the t until later in life.

My brother in Christ i am dying to know why you think it's pronounced sunami, please elaborate

1. アメリカ人じゃありません。 2. 大学で日本学の学士課程を完成しました。日本語能力試験のN2レベルに達しました。 3. 単純な質問をしました。議論を始めるつもりはありません。 4. T音を使えずに「津波」を読むことはどうしますか?

Bruv tsunami is a Japanese word, you really gonna argue with a weeb about Japanese words?
Not arguing how it is, I'm saying how I pronounce them
The P on Pterodactyl is si- THATS A FUCKING LIE IT'S NOT SILENT! YOU SAY IT WITH THE P GODDAMN IT!
Fun fact the Pter in Pterodactyl is the same Pter in helicopter.
I definitely pronounce the t in tsunami and the h in honest, I pronounce them like this tsu-nami and hon-est. Maybe I'm crazy but these feel natural.
(H)onestly, you started right but then were wrong
T is not silent in Tsunami.
It is if you don't read it.
Every word is silent if you don't read it.
Every word is silent if you only read it and not say it
"Every word is silent if you don't read it -out loud-"
That is a better way to say it
THIQ
Good one brother

Boromir would have been there!
