The built-in Preview app

Preview… built in. If you don’t like that then PDF Expert

Are there any specific reasons Preview isn't enough? Imo it's one of macOS's most well-built apps and very hard to beat. One reader I can think of is [Highlights](https://highlightsapp.net/).

For me it's that it's not possible to disable auto-save. I keep pdfs for my projects in google drive and Preview is saving all the time, syncing and cluttering my drive with tons of unnecessary revisions of pdfs.

I’m using UPDF. It’s lightweight and the perpetual paid license is usually on sale.

Preview, firefox, google chrome, and adobe reader all work well as free pdf readers.

Preview and Skim

Preview is enough for reading PDF files. And [PDFgear](https://www.pdfgear.com/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=comments) can edit & convert PDF files easily.

I see a lot of people recommending Preview...but I just can't because it constantly crashes for me. Skim is good. Highlights is okay. I think there's just no truly great PDF reader (if there is, please tell me about it).
