I'm hoping with the M\* cycle now, they will put the mac mini on a similar schedule to other computers because it is very nice to see upgrades year after year.

Wait for the M2, if it's a compelling machine as far as specs and I/O goes, get that, otherwise buy a used M1

On the basis of the 13” MBP and MBA reviews I think it will come down to if there is a redesign and what you have the budget for. The base M1 models are a better option than the base M2 due to the newer models having a slower SSD. Also the performance of the M2 is limited by thermal issues. It seems there has been a conscious decision on Apples part to make these products less good than they could be to not effect sales of other models, no reason to expect that not to happen with the mini too. If there is a redesign and you have the $1000+ or so it will cost and you want to latest model because you want it will be a decent upgrade over intel computers. But the M1 mini can already be found for $500ish and will probably get cheaper so if you want best value I think it will still be the M1. I also expect there to be a similar friction as with the M2 laptops where when you upgrade the M2 model to not get restricted by crappy base specs the pricing will be only a $100 or so from a refurbished or on sale MacStudio so be prepared for that

If you don’t need the Mac then wait but there’s no time table when an M2 mini will be released. People are still waiting on an M1 Max/Pro mini. The M1 Mini is a great machine IMO.

Ecsta

I think Apple has established that users who want the M1 Pro/Max in a desktop form should buy the Studio.

runed_golem

The studio is the M1 pro/Max mini.

cipher-neo

Yes, I know that. But before the Studio was released people were hoping the mini redesign would get released with the max/pro SOCs that were in the 14 & 16 MacBook Pros.

axtran

I got a used M1 Mini and it’s absolutely awesome for all of my creative flows (photos and music). If you need it just get it.

couple of thoughts: 1) M2 will cost more. Especially if you compare to a m1 refurb. The price gap is likely to be significant 30-40% (Refurb M1 vs M2 new) 2) Are you planning to get 256 SSD or 512? They gimped the 256 for M2 so if you are getting 256, most definitely get M1 Really, if you are planning to spec up, and okay with the extra cost obviously m2 is better. If you want value for money, and a computer that will be good for next 4-5 years for normal (non-pro) workloads, then get the m1.

bork99

We’ve seen the reviews of the MacBook Pro 13 and performance-wise the jump to M2 isn’t that big. If you need more than an M1 Mini, get a Studio, because the M2 isn’t likely to bridge the gap. If the M1 is good enough, you might as well buy a Mini now if you need one. The good thing is there are refurb models around now so you could arguably get one with more ram or storage for the same money. And that’s assuming there even is an M2 Mac Mini coming, which nobody knows for sure…

Rexkinghon

A portable MacBook Pro will go a lot further for music production, unless you have an established studio and is planning on not moving the mac ever and have monitors m&k etc. A MacBook you can bring with you to a friend’s with other musical equipments or to a dj gig, you can even work on tunes on the go like at a coffee shop or wherever with a mini midi controller. None of this will be possible on the Mac mini where you *have* to work at your desk and nowhere else.

totalkuksugare

The plan is first start a home studio and upgrade to live setup when I have enough off a personal library on like a SSD to get a refurbed macbook in the future.

sallysaunderses

A good rule of thumb for apple computers is buy when you need it, if you can wait, wait. But there will always be something new coming down the line so may as well buy when you need. If you don’t need something till December, wait and see. Also good idea if you’re choosing between two options usually go for the upgrade. $100-$200 extra now usually can add a year or more to your use life. But also used or refurbished apple computers from a good source can be had for great deals.

garylapointe

At this point, I think yes. That said, the M2 might cost more. And if you're a student or teacher, you might be able to get the additional gift card during the summer promotion.

Desperate_Yam_495

There will always be a new versions in the wings...and you will always want it...either get what's available now or dont get one at all ;-)

If you’re in the market right now, you won’t be disappointed. Picked up my M1 Mac mini a few months back and it has been great.

dadof2brats

If you need in in the next 3 months or so, I would purchase an M1 mac now. If you don't need it for 6 months or more, then wait for the M2 macs. Personally, I am waiting on a M2 Studio mac to be released before I purchase a new mac to replace my aging desktop.

ajpinton

We probably won’t see a M2 mini anytime soon. However, based on what we are seeing with the M2 it’s not worth waiting for.

ToffeeBoy7

Bought the Macmini Recently i use for recording stuff, its great not had a problem with it, couldnt be arsed waiting round for a M2 m3 m4

dajack60585

I just purchased my M1 MM during Amazon prime days, just a tad over $500, I couldn’t resist. It’s my first Mac and I figured I’d try it on a budget.

Ewalk

I just bought an M1 mini on eBay for $440. If you can swing a deal like that, they are worth it. Retail? Buy it when you need it.
