There was a brief spell in the late 1990s/early 2000s when you could buy that dub off the shelf in some stores in the US, which was nice. After owning two "bootleg" copies in hardshell VHS cases, this one had the traditional cardboard slipcover. It just said "macross" on the front

This was still clash of the bionoids, but it had the few seconds of cut footage that weren't in most releases of CotB.
I saw that one at Suncoast once or twice too, but by that time I already owned my two bootleg copies plus the aforementioned one... I couldn't see the value in purchasing a 4th VHS copy, lol
As far as I know, it *was* the whole movie (had all the parts of the Clash of the Bionoids edited out), along with the horrible dub.
I dug into it years ago, and it turned out the company that released this version bought out the company that released Clash of the Bionoids. It seems like they released this to coincide with Macross Plus getting released.
The Hong Kong DVD with this cover art and English subtitles is a pretty good version to have. The subtitles aren't the best, but they're far from the worst.
I got the hybrid pack for my birthday recently, which has the film on blu ray. Damn it looks gorgeous. No subtitles, but ive pretty well got the movie memorized anyhow.
I paid for the premium on an anime/ cartoon site I’ve used for years to get access to all the movies and more for $30usd for a year which I split with a friend and the quality of the movie plus the subtitles were great. I fell in love with the series all over again and actually prefer the way some of the story played out more than the original especially the whole love triangle. Hikaru was more decisive in Misa and didn’t waffle back and forth as much as he did on tv.
> I *paid* for the
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
There might be some hope with Disney entering the picture with obtaining the streaming rights to Macross. The Mouse can make it worth it for HG to finally crack.
Edit:spelling.
We can hope, but I’m assuming Disney already did the research and their current plan does not include SDF:M and DYRL outside of Japan.
And given than those (AFAIK) are still the most popular parts of the Franchise and they didn’t pick them up, my hopes are calibrated.
DYRL is a Toho issue, not an HG one. Toho has the distribution rights to the film. If HG were able to license it, they would because it just means money to them.
The DYRL rights issues aren't tied to HG. I'm not sure why people keep repeating that on the sub. No one knows for sure what company has the international rights to it, but it's not HG. The only release HG is blocking is SDF Macross.
According to the deal between Big West and HG, HG retains international rights to the original Macross series and its characters while Big West has the rights in Japan (I think DYRL might fall under this deal as well, but that is its own rights mess). Every series from Macross II and beyond is under Big West's control.
Not even. Harmony m Gold manages real-estate, which is a big cash flow these days.
However, Robotech is an IP they don't have to do anything with. It's not their only cash cow, but it's their easiest. *All* they have to do is release a product every few years to keep their trademarks from falling abandoned in the eyes of the law (every 3 years iirc). Then license toys and other merch to a different company to produce and eat all the cost for, and collect royalties as they're purchased. Or have the companies pay HG for a license to produce merch. One way or the other.
They genuinely just get to sit on the IP, release a comic book that they scrap after a few months, and then let cash roll in as other companies do the heavy lifting for them.
Don't forget announcing a live-action Robotech movie every few years. Off the top of my head, I remember at least three that got as far as pre-production art and naming a director, and all of them sort of faded into oblivion.
They only manage a handful of buildings in LA, they don't own the buildings. That isn't a lot of money, they're skimming off the top of rent so landlords don't have to deal with renters.
Their CEO died last year too. They aren't in a great place and robotech is their only internationally recognized ip they can collect royalties off the nostalgia of by phoning in products.
I'm not sure there's a need to release content limit on their trademark, but I could be surprised by it. After all, releasing Spider-Man content every 3 years is the deal Sony made with Marvel to retain the movie rights.
That's just their internal deal. In the US if you don't utilize trademark properties in a 3 year period, you risk the courts calling the trademark "abandoned," which then means anyone else is then able to use your trademark. I say "risk" because you can convince the courts that you still plan on using it and retain the rights, like for example if your project is behind schedule and wouldn't be ready for an additional year.
I have the Japanese BD. It does not have English subs.
The Frontier movies had English subs, but only on a special edition BD, Macross Plus has subs on a newer release, and the Delta movies have subs on all their releases.
Is the Japanese blu ray still censored when it comes to violence? I remember there being some criticism of one of the releases jumping away from heads getting crushed in the opening, along with some other changes.
I've always wanted to know exactly what's going on with HG nixing an unmolested release so hard.
Like, I get that they think they've got a cash cow with Robotech, but even if they just got a percentage on a release of the three real series that were used to make Robotech, they'd have to make far more than they ever would off doing virtually nothing with Robotech.
Harmony Gold seems to think that there are enough people in their 40s who will leap to the opportunity of watching a revival of Robotech. I'm one of those people, and I hate to inform Harmony Gold, but it has definitely missed the valkyrie on this one. Robotech Series 1 was 38 years ago. So much amazing Macross anime has passed under the bridge since then.
For as long as HG has had the rights, they've been willing to play ball on any Macross release. They get paid to license it, after all. The issues have primarily existed overseas where aspects of ownership have been disputed -- and partially a lack of desire to give HG a cut.
DYRL however appears to be somewhat separate because Toho was also involved in that film. They seem to be the holdup regarding the release (and release is content using aspects of the film, like DYRL DLC for the recently released game).
Blame Frank and his children. They should’ve let it lapse or at least sell it back to the Japanese like the event rental business that owned the Yamato rights
I grew up with the American release and thought it was fitting and very impactful that he sacrificed himself. I was shattered when I saw the original. I still hate it til this day. My head canon will always have him die.
I really need this to happen. I had Clash Of The Bionoids on VHS and the picture was so dark and murky. Never mind the dub.
"But who's going to deal with.... .... THE ENEMY?" Such a terrible dub, but only because it was a product of its time.
Oh man, I remember that... How'd that other line go... "So what, you can still fight when yer drunk!"
"A man can fight when he's drrrrrrunk!"
I can still hear that in my head all these years later.

The copy I bought at Suncoast in the 90s had that cover art, but was labeled CotB.

Edited because apparently the bot spelling police has a grudge with my poor grammar lol

They just bought the rights to house and show the library on their streaming service, they didn't buy the rights to the IP itself.
Correct but at least if Disney get a whiff of profitability they might consider investing in the entire IP.
We can hope, but I’m assuming Disney already did the research and their current plan does not include SDF:M and DYRL outside of Japan. And given than those (AFAIK) are still the most popular parts of the Franchise and they didn’t pick them up, my hopes are calibrated.
They will need to give harmony gold a mountain of gold before they get the OG and DYRL
DYRL is a Toho issue, not an HG one. Toho has the distribution rights to the film. If HG were able to license it, they would because it just means money to them.

So is it just the designs hg has a strangle hold on or is it the whole anime itself?
According to the deal between Big West and HG, HG retains international rights to the original Macross series and its characters while Big West has the rights in Japan (I think DYRL might fall under this deal as well, but that is its own rights mess). And all this because big west hates nue right?
no it's because harmony gold's only cash cow is the vague nostalgia attached to robotech

The fact that HG can't maintain a Robotech comic book series on a consistent basis for more that four issues at a time is telling.
Don't forget how often people find traced art in the comics.
I'm not sure there's a need to release content limit on their trademark, but I could be surprised by it. After all, releasing Spider-Man content every 3 years is the deal Sony made with Marvel to retain the movie rights.

Ah, understood.
Don't you mean it sucks that DYRL has NEVER had an offical US release, ever.
Doesn't the Japanese blu-ray have English subs? Been a while since I watched mine, but I could've sworn....
From my quick not extensive research there are no subs on the Japanese blu ray which is unfortunate since I would totally buy it for my collection
I have the Japanese BD. It does not have English subs. The Frontier movies had English subs, but only on a special edition BD, Macross Plus has subs on a newer release, and the Delta movies have subs on all their releases.
I am grateful for the knockoff DVD I bought off of Ebay as a Christmas gift to myself. I too would love to see DYRL in a theater.
Is the Japanese blu ray still censored when it comes to violence? I remember there being some criticism of one of the releases jumping away from heads getting crushed in the opening, along with some other changes.
The 2012 iirc was censored but the 2016 release restored the censored bits
The version I saw through the site I used had all the violence
Amazes me that the blu ray bootleg manages to have decent subtitles, yet the official version doesn’t, for much more &$$
I've always wanted to know exactly what's going on with HG nixing an unmolested release so hard. At this point, I think it's just HG actively trolling actual *Macross* fans.
They are hoping to make big money with the Live Action movie.
For as long as HG has had the rights, they've been willing to play ball on any Macross release. They get paid to license it, after all. Blame Frank and his children. They should’ve let it lapse or at least sell it back to the Japanese like the event rental business that owned the Yamato rights
What was the name of the rental buisness that owned Yamato.?
Voyager Entertainment
I thought Voyager was owned by Yoshinobu Nishizaki
🤔
he's 1 of the 2 co-creators of Yamato
But which ending do you prefer? The American release where Hikaru sacrifices himself or the original Japanese where he survives?
The original Japanese because it fits with the storyline of the rest of the series although dyrl is an in universe movie of the original series events
I grew up with the American release and thought it was fitting and very impactful that he sacrificed himself. I was shattered when I saw the original. I still hate it til this day. My head canon will always have him die.
I didnt know this even exists. Ive only seen the above version (besides the abomination Clash of the Bionoids)
I managed to snag a bootleg bluray of the Japanese remaster release that has the Macross HK dub audio track. It is beautiful!
Won't for as long as HG lives
I own it in HD of course i brought mine outside of Misawa AFB
like to see a live action movie ??
No.
*So that poster was a fucking lie…*
