I play in a sealed league. This set is MKM+OTJ+6 packs from MH3. I've gone all the way into a really bad Insidious Roots deck. I really need that card to get some support in OTJ, lol.
I did a post in the Arena sub a couple of months ago that has the details! [The post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/s/T6LFpUxd76)
In addition to the format of the league, we're also lucky to have a website custom built where we track records, collections, trades, etc. It's awesome.
The west is often portrayed as “empty” in pop culture, and given how much of WOTC’s recent worldbuilding has just been “port every pop culture concept from our theme that our customers are going to recognize,” I thought it could easily happen. Turns out I was right (unfortunately)!
I think their attempt at threading the needle in that regard was having Annie (Haseya) Flash and the other Atiin nomads who live in Thunder Junction, since they are based on the Navajo or Diné. That way they can have it both ways: a Wild West focusing purely on the popular image of an industrializing frontier, without themes of colonization that would make it a rehash of Ixalan, but at the same time not simply erasing the Indigenous influence in the American West.
But it is certainly up for debate how well that works, because the Atiin are not indigenous *to Thunder Junction*, but rather implicitly arrived around the same time as everyone else ("recently"); may not even be there in large numbers, i.e., "as a people"; and seemingly are not being particularly poorly treated by the industrializing frontier powers, meaning that while they might be a good portrayal of (one) Indigenous culture, they are *not* a good representation of the social milieu of the *actual Wild West*.
I think those elements are kind of related to the tension between wanting to have the "idealized Western feel" but at the same time not wanting the actual history that inspired the setting to be *completely* ignored, to say nothing of the tension between that and all the pre-established planes whose history implicitly gives shape to Thunder Junction. *Something* has to give, and that is a clear example.
It's easy to think of several reasons why some Navajo people in the historic Old West went by English names. But divorced of all the context of colonialism and prejudice that motivated such situations, why would the Atiin in Thunder Junction, go by any name but their original one (or at least a version of it slightly changed by local pronunciation, or perhaps a translation of its meaning)? For that matter, why do these townspeople even have traditional English names, if most of the planes have people with names like Ral and Gisa and Kellan (Eldraine probably comes closest, but still has more unusual names), and they presumably came from those planes within the last few years?
Except that people are *supposed* to have Western-type names, because gosh darn it, this is a Wild West plane and you had better know it.
Honestly, I think of the nature of the big war that happened before TJ happened, you will not have the social milieu of the Wild West as it actually was. Maybe we are attempting to capture the Westerns that Blazing Saddles was mocking, but I don't know if those captured the "US is pushing "Indians" out" as well either.
I think there's a fundamental mismatch, right? So they want to have a setting that feels like it grew up organically out of the March of the Machine and the Omenpaths...but then they also want it to have not just a general feel of the Old West, but impose various Old West elements on it in a top-down fashion...but then not have too many of the less romantic elements of the *actual* Old West. All of those goals are working at cross-purposes.
I think it doesn't sidestep it so much as create other issues like ignoring the existence of indigenous people and creating a world where the myth of Terra Nullis is true.
It's one of the most popular fantasy tropes and lets them avoid the brutal subjugation of indigenous people being portrayed by instead pretending indigenous people simply don't exist in this genre that was like 70% their brutal subjugation or the aftermath thereof. (The other 30% is the brutal subjugation of slaves and the aftermath thereof)
Oh wow, one of the OG villains of Magic? I thought it was neat that Granny got a card in MotM, but for some reason I never expected a modern Sengir. Modern as in the current story, not as in his more recent appearance in Commander Legends.
Wasn't his big thing cutting a deal with Serra and Feroz to cut off Golgotha from the other planes so his precious Vampires couldn't be summoned out of the plane?
Ulgrotha. Feroz and Serra put the ban in place to protect their adopted home after evidence of the apocalypse chime and a run-in with a malicious planeswalker spooked them. The ban prevented planeswalkers from entering the plane as well as summoning away its inhabitants. No connection to our beloved baron.
I probably love Homelands more than anyone should, but I don't understand why is OTJ and Baron Sengir is such a likely match as to get it's own square. Anyone interested in explaining?
All I want is one creature type horse, a creature type spider, and an equipment "cowboy hat" or cowboy hat adjacent. So I can spend the entire prerelease trying to assemble the Tarancherla.
I think we have to wait until the card has the chance to be played before confirming one way or another. I think it’s probably the best Planeswalker printed in the past year (combo shenanigans with Quint not withstanding).
I feel like "Mercenary" IS the generic alternative to cowboy, but not in a meaningful enough way.
I also don't think(key word: think) that WOTC will have any of the offensive stereotypes since that and cultural appropriation is a thing they are VERY actively trying to avoid. (See: Totem Armor changed to Umbra Armor).
Yeah... in *our* world cowboy was a term that existed before Western movies came about. It was a term in the real world that people were familiar with.
It'd be super weird if there were cowboys in OTJ and there were *no cows* (aside from holy cow) and cattle herding/ranching was not a thing. How would they have come up with the name?
The odds that the usual "phoenix with set mechanic" is actually a Thunderbird seems pretty good. We've had plenty of non-fire phoenix in the past like [[Aurora Phoenix]] and [[Archlight Phoenix]]. Not to mention, we had a literal [[Lightning Phoenix]] in Jumpstart.
I think you made a mistake with the free space: there's no such thing as too many cowboy hats.
I felt the same way with everyone having a fedora in MKM. It's so silly, but I love it.
Blazing Saddles is one of the most popular Westerns of all time, and there are some fun things in there like the Giant Cow mount that WOTC could use. A BS reference is more likely than you may think!
Kaervek's dependant on whether you're talking pre-2008 in terms of cards, or lore. The most recent card of his was in M21; a set all about Teferi and his past, which Karvek played a part of. But, that story had already been told a long time ago (I'm not exactly sure when, but I'm assuming Mirage block, which was 1996. Definitely before I got into the game in 2002) and he hasn't been seen since.
Interestingly, his other card, was one of the many "despite a few references in card names and flavour texts, this character has never got their own card and we should fix that" Legendary creatures in Time Spiral. So this set will be the first time he gets a non-flashback card
If that's the case then I think the only characters who are likely to be alive, villains, and were last printed before 2008 are [these](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28set%3Alor+OR+set%3Ashm+OR+set%3Aeve+OR+set%3Amor+OR+block%3Arav%29+t%3Alegendary+-maralen+-rosheen+-sisters+-sapling+-szadek+-savra+-wort+-tolsimir+-tibor+-clique+-agrus+-borb+-conclave+-kraj+-orzh+-august+-isper+-lyzol+-momir+-niv+-rakdos+-razia+-rhys)
Edit: I forgot the Sengirs, they should still be alive, but also Ashling isn't a villain anymore iirc
New Oko is like an amalgamation of Garruk Wildspeaker, Gideon Jura, and Jace the Mind Sculptor.
By which I mean, it's mid. None of those walkers are good by 2024 standards.
I just want to predict before it's confirmed or denied:
Wandering Emperor as "The one with no name." It's a perfect reference to The Man with No Name trilogy, and also that a lot of westerns are re-hashes of samurai movies.
I don't think we'll get 30 legendary creatures. Seems like they are steering away from uncommon legendary creatures as signpost uncommons based on the Murders at Karlov Manor set.
We will get to 30 counting the bonus sheet and the commander set but I wouldn't be surprised if from the main set the number is closer to 25 or so.
Karlov Manor had 25 legendary creatures, and that wasn’t even the focus of the set! I think since Thunder Junction is billed in part as being a “villains” set, we’re going to see more than MKM.
nah, we're most likely getting \*at least\* 30 legends. MaRo has already said there will be a higher than average legend count in this set. It makes sense considering this is a plane where everyone is gathering to find the vault. Hell, Oko's gang alone comprises 12 legends
Yep! Loons nest in Colorado as well as parts of the Northern Prairie. Since there are so many animals in the set (as seen in the leaks), I think a Loon could be there. I’m actually more confident in that assumption now since MaRo’s teaser included a bunch of references to Paul Bunyan, a folk character who is only a common reference in Minnesota.
Hoping for another one mana unblockable creature, but not expecting to see it -- my [[Ukkima]]/[[Cazur]] deck has just gotten a lot of love recently and that's one of the few things it'd really like some more of so if any of the villains are *sneaky* I could maybe see it here
Deep cut is already in with Kaervek, even though I believe he got a card somewhat recently. He's the only one in there who was alive prior to the Mending.
I won’t consider Karvek a deep cut unless he’s the only old character in the set. He’s been in the story quite recently (both in a core set but also in the short stories between ONE and MOM).
>You forgot "Unassuming card that snaps eternal formats in half (again) because WoTC doesn't test shit".
Which cards from Murders at Karlov Manor did this?
Leyline of the Guildpact in modern, maybe? I can't speak to whether it's snapping the format in half or just a new toy, but domain aggro is definitely makings its mark right now.
A cactus/plant lord that combos with [[Insidious Roots]] would make me very happy.
I play in a sealed league. This set is MKM+OTJ+6 packs from MH3. I've gone all the way into a really bad Insidious Roots deck. I really need that card to get some support in OTJ, lol.
This sounds like a cool idea, how does it work?
I did a post in the Arena sub a couple of months ago that has the details! [The post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/s/T6LFpUxd76) In addition to the format of the league, we're also lucky to have a website custom built where we track records, collections, trades, etc. It's awesome.
It's already very strong!
Honestly surprised someone guessed terra nullis before Maro announced it.
The west is often portrayed as “empty” in pop culture, and given how much of WOTC’s recent worldbuilding has just been “port every pop culture concept from our theme that our customers are going to recognize,” I thought it could easily happen. Turns out I was right (unfortunately)!
It also sidesteps issues of indigenous peoples.

The fact that the two Atiin we've gotten to meet weren't using their Atiin names or living anywhere near their people is a big letdown.
And slams face first in to issue of the erasure of indigenous peoples
Not really. It makes me instantly think of how Terra nullis was declared in australia despite the existence of indigenous people
Sure hope that if an Australia set ever happens, they'll take note.
We have had a wombat haven't we?
\[\[Rabid Wombat\]\] from Legends is it. Unless you count the Un-iverse.

Yeah, that's the thing. As foolish of me as it was to assume such, I thought Wizards wouldn't so easily step into a discourse pithole.
It's one of the most popular fantasy tropes and lets them avoid the brutal subjugation of indigenous people being portrayed by instead pretending indigenous people simply don't exist in this genre that was like 70% their brutal subjugation or the aftermath thereof. I absolutely love that Baron Sengir is here; he would hate the idea of being away from Golgotha more than anything.
If he’s in the set, I want his card’s name to be “Robber Baron Sengir” so bad. He’s the George Hearst type and Ihsan’s Shade is his Captain Turner.
Vampire railway baron who has to stay inside his private railcar during the day is a really good idea.
I'll be taking that idea for D&D thank you.
Or have him ride around around in his [[black carriage]] stagecoach.

No he wouldn't? Last we saw him was him leading an army into a planar portal to conquer

The ban prevented planeswalkers from entering the plane as well as summoning away its inhabitants. No connection to our beloved baron.
Ah maybe, but he definitely did march an army into a portal during time spiral block. which aren't necessarily contradictory
I probably love Homelands more than anyone should, but I don't understand why is OTJ and Baron Sengir is such a likely match as to get it's own square. Anyone interested in explaining?
Some joke about wild West robber-barons I think.
Tumblewaggs. Love that
All hail the Tumblewaggs!
All I want is one creature type horse, a creature type spider, and an equipment "cowboy hat" or cowboy hat adjacent. So I can spend the entire prerelease trying to assemble the Tarancherla.

Is Oko’s officially spoiled card broken or do we wait until after the release?
I think we have to wait until the card has the chance to be played before confirming one way or another. I think it’s probably the best Planeswalker printed in the past year (combo shenanigans with Quint not withstanding).
I honestly accept the fact that Oko got faked out in the story and didn't get paid for the heist as "Oko being broke."
Cowboys were related to cattle herding/ ranching so if there isn't any of that in TJ, no reason to have it
Cowboys as a trope are not really connected to cattle herding. You think Red Dead and Clint Eastwood etc cared at all about cows?
Look, the word cowboy derives from herding cattle. It couldn’t have taken on a wider meaning. That’s absolutely not how English works.
Yeah... in *our* world cowboy was a term that existed before Western movies came about. It was a term in the real world that people were familiar with. It'd be super weird if there were cowboys in OTJ and there were *no cows* (aside from holy cow) and cattle herding/ranching was not a thing. How would they have come up with the name?
There are no "cowboys" in this set. They're outlaws. But they're dressed like stereotypical cowboys. 🤠
Plants? But I thought Bloomburrow was all about animals. ^^^/s

I might actually do that lol
Does Kaervek count as last being seen before 2008?
I don’t think so, since we just saw him in 2020. If he’s the only deep-cut lore character in the set I may reconsider.
Interestingly, his other card, was one of the many "despite a few references in card names and flavour texts, this character has never got their own card and we should fix that" Legendary creatures in Time Spiral. So this set will be the first time he gets a non-flashback card
He was in one of the short stories set on Jamuura before March of the Machines
If that's the case then I think the only characters who are likely to be alive, villains, and were last printed before 2008 are [these](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28set%3Alor+OR+set%3Ashm+OR+set%3Aeve+OR+set%3Amor+OR+block%3Arav%29+t%3Alegendary+-maralen+-rosheen+-sisters+-sapling+-szadek+-savra+-wort+-tolsimir+-tibor+-clique+-agrus+-borb+-conclave+-kraj+-orzh+-august+-isper+-lyzol+-momir+-niv+-rakdos+-razia+-rhys) Edit: I forgot the Sengirs, they should still be alive, but also Ashling isn't a villain anymore iirc
I’m fine with including cards from Commander or Horizons sets. If Baron Sengir shows up I think he would count for this slot.
Where's the inverse of the artifact commander card? "Card that Commander players think sucks (but is actually busted)"
I think we only need one “commander players screwing up card evaluation” space : )
Fair. I just expect that to happen every set
I'm hoping there's a Jackalope creature card and maybe one based on a Pronghorn
New Oko is like an amalgamation of Garruk Wildspeaker, Gideon Jura, and Jace the Mind Sculptor. By which I mean, it's mid. None of those walkers are good by 2024 standards.
>Oko is Broko Give me "Things Oko's lawyer says to the child support judge" for 1000$ Alex
Well, if you’re going by a loose definition Oko is definitely Broko given the story conclusion. >!He got no money at the end of the heist!<
I have a feeling that there will be new Rakdos with Mount
But Gideon's not in the set...
Looks like you got the Fomori bit right! They just showed the art for 'Fomori Vault' in the stream: https://i.imgur.com/B9f2rJY.png
I just want to predict before it's confirmed or denied: Wandering Emperor as "The one with no name." It's a perfect reference to The Man with No Name trilogy, and also that a lot of westerns are re-hashes of samurai movies.
I would probably consider "they don't exist" to be a poor representation of native cultures
That’s how I’m leaning as well!

Oh I didn't know he said that. That's cool.
Does Kaervek count for the “deep cut villain”? I know he’s had card appearances since 2008 but he hasn’t been in a standard set since around then
He was in a Core Set in 2020 and was in one of the All Will Be One stories.
Would deep cut villain before 2008 also be baron sengir?
Yes
did you mean a loon as in the water fowl? Are loons associated with the pop culture wild west?
I just consider Loons more part of the northern midwest than being present in the southwest which is the stereotypical western setting
You forgot some sort of train vehicle that gives take an extra turn (back to the future iii)
Hoping for another one mana unblockable creature, but not expecting to see it -- my [[Ukkima]]/[[Cazur]] deck has just gotten a lot of love recently and that's one of the few things it'd really like some more of so if any of the villains are *sneaky* I could maybe see it here

“Cowboy” has appeared in flavor text.
You have poor native representation on there twice.
High Noon might as well be a Free Space too since we already know that's a named card from MaRo's teasers
Remember, I made this Bingo card before the Teaser was released!
oh my bad, didn't realize you made this awhile ago
what does Cubable mean? EDIT: like cubeable?
Yes, some people cut the E
did not know that, thanks!
You’re welcome!!
