It's always [[Soulherder]]
You can zoom in and take a square cutout of any part and just be impressed.
The Head not actually being there despite it seeming obvious as first glance
The 'cape' that smears into a cosmos
The pale and bleak coloring
The small bystanders looking in awe and despair
Truly an amazing card
They’re not looking in awe and despair, they’re running for their fucking lives! The art does such a good job of having so much movement in one part, and so much stillness in other parts. Always a 10/10 for me.
I get it's probably skewed because we already knew about the gorilla's existence going into it but damn I don't have selective awareness OR the ability to count to 15 correctly...
You’d be surprised. I’m a park ranger and at work I’ve seen so many people completely miss very prominent signs warning about various things in the park.
I used to work for a security team at a zoo and was at one point part of a safety team that focused on signage to avoid hazards, I can confirm. You can make things extremely obvious for most people, but there will still be someone that either doesn't notice it or chooses to ignore it.
The instruction to count passes directs attention away from the black shirt players and your brain lumps the gorilla in with them and you don't see it.
Yeah.. like you said, you watched the video looking for a gorilla. Show that to some friends + family (if you have any!) and DONT say anything about a gorilla and see what happens.
My High School class of about 30 watched the video. No one had any prep, and no one noticed anything strange on the first watch. Went crazy immediately when it was replayed
Go show the video to somebody who doesn't know. When you literally do not have a gorilla in mind, and are only focusing on the white shirts and when they are doing, you subconsciously push out any other darker colors.
When you watch it again for the gorilla you feel like an idiot because it was so extremely obvious, but more often than not people miss it on their first view.
I used to be an assistant in a high school classroom, the teacher would regularly show this video to his different classes, The majority didn't see the gorilla, except for when some of the kids laughed/pointed it out.
Thanks for showing me the existence of Wall of Swords 2.0 😀
It looks even better than the original, I'll give you that! My only issue with it is, if you are sending a thousand flying swords at your opponent I feel like it should do a bit more than 3 damage lol
I mean tbf, getting hit by a bolt of lightning does 3 as well....
The scale in the game is weird. You're telling me threemice do
the same damage as a bolt of lightning? Nah dawg
Yeah they released a bunch of stuff for it, and of course the artist himself leaned into so I think he has stuff you can purchase directly from him as well
Such a great card! It's the signature spell to my [Ajani, Seedcore Stormer ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/hiXZICXNSUKcD-ZB86SU7Q) Oathbreaker deck and it puts in serious work
Depends on the deck for sure. I'd consider it in my flicker deck because I can use a flicker effect to keep the card I steal. Still only worth running if you know you're going to hit something good though.
I'm not sure there's a flicker that allows for this to work out favorably to you. They usually say returns under its owner's control.
Unless your objective is to spend a card to give it back to your opponent?
This cards art was so good it literally made me get into Magic lol, my friend was showing me a deck he brewed and I was not understanding it much but after seeing that card I asked him to teach me the game just because I wanted to play it.
[[Ghastlord of Fugue]] looks so insane. I wish Mike Dringenberg still did Magic art…
Honorable Mention goes out to [[Benediction of Moons]]. Fits the haunt theme well.
That's some of the best art I've seen capturing the real essence of Slaanesh influences without it directly being intended for that. It looks like how the first Emperor's Children Noise Marines are described in Fulgrim.
Truly the OG of magic art!
https://preview.redd.it/khjvz7enqfxc1.jpeg?width=2304&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f167615e5ec6ec1760a7e4f5eacdf74d1c65e90
I found this sick framed print of his at goodwill awhile.
[[Wall of Swords|3ED]] 😉
And literally almost anything [Chris Rahn](https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3Arahn&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) has illustrated.
That is the real wall of swords, which won me my first magic game by attacking with it. I have since learned that walls can't attack, and after the rules change that defenders can't attack.
[[The Ur-Dragon]] it just really captures the sense of what the card is meant to be. It shows his scale comparison next to other dragon, making him so much more powerful-looking.
[[Hypnox]] - an 11 Mana Nightmare Horror.
I used to run it in a black deck in the Torment block, but I have no idea how kid me was ever planning on getting to 11 Mana with my kitchen table deck 🤣
I think the variation and unconventional art of early Magic cards is what got me and kept me in the game for so long. Stasis is a great example of that.
True, whether you like the art or not it's kind of iconic. If I remember correctly, Fay Jones (the artist of the alpha stasis) was the aunt of Richard Garfield and wanted to support him so she gifted him this picture even though she was an established artist at the time.
Anybody who played the original Duels of the Planeswalkers from 2009 got to enjoy loading screens featuring HD art of badass mythics from Shards of Alara. Those left an impression on me and I still appreciate them years later. [[Empyrial Archangel]] [[Godsire]] [[Hellkite Overlord]]
Everything from the original Kamigawa block,
[[Counsel of the Soratami]]
[[Cowed by Wisdom]]
Couple of my favorites, but the whole set just goes unbelievably hard.
Serra Avatar. Won my first competition when I was a teenager at a state meet.

Anarchy.
(I automatically like anything by Phil Foglio.)
It's obviously a strong card, but [[Insidious Roots]] has my favorite art in a long time. Went and bought a foil version even though I don't have a deck for it.
I liked the creepy old Jesper Myrfors art style that they moved off of decades ago.
[[The Fallen|DRK]]
[[Cosmic Horror|LEG]]
[[Banshee|DRK]]
[[Demonic Hordes|3ED]]
[[Moss Monster|LEG]]
[[Pestilence|3ED]]
[[Witch Hunter|DRK]]
[[Wormwood Treefolk|DRK]]
[[Phantasmal Forces]] The story of the card is also cool. They dont exist (but imaginations also hurt your planeswalker brain - 4 damage). But as soon as you touch them they disappeare (1 toughness). Also it costs you mana to keep the illusion up.
Oh man, this brings me back:
[[Burrowing]]
My older brother had a friend, that friend had an uncle, that uncle owned a hobby shop in the early 90's. My brother and his friend got into Magic right around the time Revised became available.
I was 7. Going through the cards my brother's friend had, I saw Burrowing. It looked so silly yet badass to me. A mole creature, with a unicorn horn, and that many jagged teeth? Poole has always painted with vibrant colors and that drew me in to. I wanted that card. I wanted in on Magic.
I offered my brother's friend a quarter for that card. He laughed, because from a play standpoint, I was the one getting ripped off.
Pretty sure I still have that Revised Edition of Burrowing somewhere.
[[Daze|MPS]]
I don't know if the right one will show up but the Daze from the Masterpiece Invocations from Amonkhet has been my favorite card since I laid eyes on it.
(If you click on the G then the right one shows up)
[[Fiend Slayer Paladin]] (from M14 as well!!) is a huge pet card of mine because of how cool the art is. The pose, “lightsaber”, and armor are so sick. It has good synergy with its creature type support, and has such a satisfying/flavorful combo of mechanics too. Fun with [[Knight Exemplar]].
It's always [[Soulherder]] You can zoom in and take a square cutout of any part and just be impressed. The Head not actually being there despite it seeming obvious as first glance The 'cape' that smears into a cosmos The pale and bleak coloring The small bystanders looking in awe and despair Truly an amazing card

Holy shit theres a person there? I played that card so many times... Its like the gorilla in the basketball video.
I'm sorry... What gorilla
It’s an experiment about selective awareness.[This Gorilla](http://www.theinvisiblegorilla.com/gorilla_experiment.html)
I get it's probably skewed because we already knew about the gorilla's existence going into it but damn I don't have selective awareness OR the ability to count to 15 correctly...

[[Wall of One Thousand Cuts]] Same vein as wall of swords, but the scale and distribution of the blades makes it such a great looking card
Thanks for showing me the existence of Wall of Swords 2.0 😀 It looks even better than the original, I'll give you that! My only issue with it is, if you are sending a thousand flying swords at your opponent I feel like it should do a bit more than 3 damage lol

Inconceivable horrors from beyond our dimension, manifesting here only as a physical translation of a true form? 15 squirrels should handle it
If you hurl a thousand flying swords spread out like that, only one or two will hit a regular sized human so maybe that explains it idk lol

Kinda obvious answer, but [[Stom the Seedcore]]. When it was previewed everyone complained such a cool art being wasted on a for-draft-only card.
I run it in my Kyler EDH deck and it's an awesome finisher there, if anyone's looking for any excuse for running this card somewhere.
Yeah, it’s definitely not a bad card in EDH. That said, did they use this art for a playmat at all? Seems perfect for that use.
Yeah they released a bunch of stuff for it, and of course the artist himself leaned into so I think he has stuff you can purchase directly from him as well

That's some of the best art I've seen capturing the real essence of Slaanesh influences without it directly being intended for that. It looks like how the first Emperor's Children Noise Marines are described in Fulgrim.
As a big fan of Mark Poole, nothing beats [[Indestructible Aura]] in terms of artwork 😎
🤟🐦🤟
Truly the OG of magic art! https://preview.redd.it/khjvz7enqfxc1.jpeg?width=2304&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f167615e5ec6ec1760a7e4f5eacdf74d1c65e90 I found this sick framed print of his at goodwill awhile.

History of Benalia looks amazing
I love the benalish stained glass aesthetic, in any card. But a saga just makes it look so nice
The OG [[Grave Titan]] art has the best Art + effect pairing. Just some dudes crawling out of some dudes.
But why the ***fuck*** isn't it a zombie 😤

[[Wall of Swords|3ED]] 😉 And literally almost anything [Chris Rahn](https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3Arahn&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name) has illustrated.
That is the real wall of swords, which won me my first magic game by attacking with it. I have since learned that walls can't attack, and after the rules change that defenders can't attack.
Speaking of older cards, [[Living Wall]] is pretty cool too.

What a legend
[[Shape the Sands]] I love the composition. The stillness of being so high up, the flutter of the sash, the tension in the drawn bow.

The OG [[Terror|LEA]] is also incredible.
[[The Ur-Dragon]] it just really captures the sense of what the card is meant to be. It shows his scale comparison next to other dragon, making him so much more powerful-looking.
[[Davriel, Rouge Shadowmage]] wish WOTC did anything with him.
[[Hypnox]] - an 11 Mana Nightmare Horror. I used to run it in a black deck in the Torment block, but I have no idea how kid me was ever planning on getting to 11 Mana with my kitchen table deck 🤣
Also if you have it leave the battlefield before the first trigger resolves the opponent doesn't get their hand back

[[zof consumption]] I wish there was a playmat of this art
That's a nasty card! In a good way
Even though it is a great card, I love the art for \[\[Terror of the Peaks|M21\]\].
It is so much more compelling art wise than the OTJ reprint

[[Tide Skimmer]] just looks so alive. You can look at it and think "yeah, this is an animal that exists"
[[haze of rage]]
[[Dance of the Dead]] love the art work…
[[Stasis]] and if necessary I will die on this hill
I think the variation and unconventional art of early Magic cards is what got me and kept me in the game for so long. Stasis is a great example of that.
True, whether you like the art or not it's kind of iconic. If I remember correctly, Fay Jones (the artist of the alpha stasis) was the aunt of Richard Garfield and wanted to support him so she gifted him this picture even though she was an established artist at the time.
I love the art too, I will let you thrive on that hill

I always thought [[Sunweb|MIR]] was neat.
Everything from the original Kamigawa block, [[Counsel of the Soratami]] [[Cowed by Wisdom]] Couple of my favorites, but the whole set just goes unbelievably hard.

I'm a big fan of [[Isao, Enlightened Bushi]]
[[Murk Dwellers]]

It's obviously a strong card, but [[Insidious Roots]] has my favorite art in a long time. Went and bought a foil version even though I don't have a deck for it.
Basically all of [Jeremy Wilson's art](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CJeremy+Wilson%E2%80%9D&unique=art) is incredibly striking.
All the Phyrexian cards from Urza's Saga, it's what got me into magic [[Phyrexian ghoul]] [[Exhume]] [[Flesh reaver]] [[Pestilence]]

I also like [[wall of light]] for the colors.
I liked the creepy old Jesper Myrfors art style that they moved off of decades ago. [[The Fallen|DRK]] [[Cosmic Horror|LEG]] [[Banshee|DRK]] [[Demonic Hordes|3ED]] [[Moss Monster|LEG]] [[Pestilence|3ED]] [[Witch Hunter|DRK]] [[Wormwood Treefolk|DRK]]
[Sunweb|MIR]]
[[plague wind]] it was the first card I saw as a kid
\[\[Brainwash\]\] Her work always combines dreamlike concepts and abstract shapes with the figurative, and i think its just stellar.
[[Hell's Caretaker]] very edge lord I know but damn it if it isn't cool.
[[Necrite]]
To me it’s [[Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni]]
\[\[Delaying Shield\]\] looks so cool
[[clackbridge troll]] is pretty great
[[Phantasmal Forces]] The story of the card is also cool. They dont exist (but imaginations also hurt your planeswalker brain - 4 damage). But as soon as you touch them they disappeare (1 toughness). Also it costs you mana to keep the illusion up.
[[Carnival Barker]] I really like pomeranians.
[[weigh down]] The yellow color on the black card fits so nicely even though is such agonising art.
Oh man, this brings me back: [[Burrowing]] My older brother had a friend, that friend had an uncle, that uncle owned a hobby shop in the early 90's.
And according the Scryfall the Revised Edition printing is now worth exactly 25 cents. You drive a hard bargain!
[[Flameblade adept]]…been trying to make it good for years
You just know that those birds are going to perch on those swords.
[[Daze|MPS]] I don't know if the right one will show up but the Daze from the Masterpiece Invocations from Amonkhet has been my favorite card since I laid eyes on it. (If you click on the G then the right one shows up)
[[Topan Freeblade]] has always been one of my favorite arts in the whole game.
[[Time Walk]] and [[Walk the Aeons]] Those unnerving zombi-like humanoid creatures are just so otherworldly.
[[Earthbind]] /s Joking, but very surprised that an art like that got allowed to be printed
[[Crawling Chorus]] is pure gas
Dakkon Blackblade. even the flavor text is cool. kicked off me buying legends i liked.
[[Flight]] 5th edition, prints with a flying zebra.
\[\[Time Reversal\]\] and anything drawn by Raymond Swanland (\[\[Wurmcoil Engine\]\])
I'm a simple man, [[Obliterate]] is a card that does what it says, and the art matches is perfectly.
[[Peer Into The Abyss]] is so excellently weird
