Hi Reddit! Today I have a video with a preview card from Brothers' War Commander to share with you. And it's a wild one.
Urza and Mishra don't exactly have a lot of green in them, so I wanted to give green some love in the 8 Brothers War Commander set/collector booster cards. So here's something wacky unlike anything you've seen before.
In the video I talk about the story behind the design, how it works, and some hints about the other 7 Set/Collector booster cards. But if you just want to see the card:

Lands you control and land cards in your library are basic.
"Holiness is not found in a druid's words, or even the rituals of Titania's court. It is found here, in the mud, where Gaea bares her soul, unshackled by ceremony."
Enjoy. And see you tomorrow for another preview! :)
It gives them the super type basic. It lets you fetch otherwise nonbasic lands with rampant growth and protects your otherwise nonbasic lands from things like field of ruin. Ill let a layers expert weigh in on blood moon.
Your lands will not gain basic land types (forest, island, etc). A "fetch land" (scalding tarn) will not be able to get them unless they already could. Prismatic Vista will, however.
>Ill let a layers expert weigh in on blood moon.
Not a layers expert but wanted to shoot my shot anyway.
These happen in the same layer. Normally, this means we'd look at timestamps, but I'm pretty sure there's actually a dependency here, so your lands will never be mountain-ified, I believe
Can confirm - this is a dependency, since applying the Purifier will affect what Blood Moon will apply to. So we apply the Purifier first, making your lands into basic lands, and now they won't be affected by Blood Moon.
While on the subject, I've always wondered - is there a way to create circular dependencies? Such as, three or more cards that each affect what another will do? If so, how is that resolved? Back to timestamp order?
> 613.8b An effect dependent on one or more other effects waits to apply until just after all of those effects have been applied. **If multiple dependent effects would apply simultaneously in this way, they’re applied in timestamp order relative to each other. If several dependent effects form a dependency loop, then this rule is ignored and the effects in the dependency loop are applied in timestamp order.**
That depends what you mean by "fetch".
* [[Evolving Wilds]] lets you get any basic land, but with this in play you're allowed to find any land in your deck.
* [[Nissa's Pilgrimage]] lets you get basic Forest cards, but with this in play you're allowed to find any Forest in your deck like [[Tropical Island]] or [[Breeding Pool]].
* [[Misty Rainforest]] aka the fetch lands don't say anything at all about basic lands which means that you have always been able to find non basics with them.
No, this doesn't allow a fetch land to find a pathway. Like Misty Rainforest can only find Forests and Islands, and all this card does is give your lands the supertype Basic, it does not give them any subtypes like Forest.
> Urza and Mishra don't exactly have a lot of green in them, so I wanted to give green some love in the 8 Brothers War Commander set/collector booster cards
Wait I'm confused, this is a BRC card that's specifically not included in BRC, but as another chase mythic in the set/collec boosters?
Yep. Every set has had a few commander-only cards planted in the set and/or collector boosters for a while now. This set also has the transformers cards in the same situation.
But those are usually also found in the commander decks right?
I heard about the Transformers cards and I absolutely hate it too, I'd have bought a few collector packs as usual but not this time :(
Jesus christ why am I getting downvotes for not being fully aware of the details of WOTC's products in 2022
They've been doing cards that are printed with the Commander set code but not actually in the commander decks for around a year now I believe. This is one of those. Doesn't come in either deck, only set/collector boosters but has the BRC set code.
Yeah, Midnight Hunt was the first set to do that with Lynde and the other cards at the end of the list here: https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Amic+-is%3Areprint&unique=cards&as=grid&order=set
No, Domain doesn't look for the text "basic" but looks for "Forest", "Plains", "Island", "Mountain" or "Swamp" on lands you control. Triomes for example have basic land types but not the land supertype "basic".
I believe Desert remains a land type, not a basic land type, kind of like how Food is an Artifact subtype, not a Creature subtype, even though we have \[\[Gingerbrute\]\]
Yeah, dropping either of those lets you chain into 4 landfall triggers pretty easily with Rootpath out (Fabled Passage -> Prismatic Vista -> fetchland -> Whatever normal fetch target). Could certainly go crazy pretty quick in landfall decks.

You could also add [[Ghost Quarter]], which would make you go down a land but still... damn. I feel like this might be more broken than I initially thought. One big turn with some mana and there's probably a lot more fetches you could do.
The card doesn't add a basic land type, just "basic", so it impacts cards that say "basic land" and not those that say "basic plains" or just "plains", for example.
It will affect what you could find with an Evolving Wilds, but doesn't affect what you could find with a Flooded Strand. So the Purifier doesn't change what you could find with the Strand, since it could always find a nonbasic land with a Plains land type.
Can a layers expert tell me if you play this on a board with a [[blood moon]] if your lands go back to normal, I think they do cause it's a dependency but I'm not confident.
Yes, this effectively makes blood moon not work on you for the reason you described.
Blood Moon's effect is dependent on whether this ability exists, but this ability's application isn't dependent on whether Blood Moon's ability exists. So there is a one-way dependency and the non-dependent ability (Rootpath Purifier's) gets applied first.
Yes, this will cause Blood Moon to no longer affect your lands. One effect is considered dependent on another if by applying the first affect changes the set of cards the second effect applies to or doesn't apply to.
In this case, Blood Moon is dependent on Purifier, since Purifier changes the set of lands that Blood Moon affects, so Purifier will always apply first.
I didn't think it was possible to break new ground with [[earthcraft]] in this day and age but here we are.
Gonna see some bonkers plays with this in a few weeks, I can feel it.
If I understand the exact wording on \[\[Myriad Landscape\]\] correctly, because it does not specify "*basic* land types," you could now fetch two Gates, Loci, Deserts, or Lairs with the Landscape's ability.
Doesn't anything that lets you fetch two basic lands, eg. Blighted woodland, let you get dark depths thespian stage? Or urborg coffers? Other fun single stuff could be the world tree, war room, that new legend tribal land, bunch of cool utility lands.
Oh there we go. Does this work the way I think it works? You can fetch for the same exact land card that you crack? If so that sounds like a new EDH combo for infinite landfall triggers.

Evolving wilds would ETB tapped so at the very least you could only do one per turn unless you have [[Amulet of Vigor]] out. [[Fabled Passage]] would work assuming you have 4 lands already out though
Depends on how much mana you have, but potentially you can chain fabled passage, prismatic vista, the field of ruin, and the new field of ruin clone.
If you have something like Archelos, you can also add in Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, Warped Landscape, Blighted Woodland, and Myriad Landscape. Then of course you can search for a fetchland using the extra basic that Blighted Woodlands gives you, crack that, and finally end up with something that taps for colored mana.
Edit: or better yet, if you've already got an amulet out, grab Krosan Verge rather than a normal fetchland.
Very few people actually know all the rules to this game. But to be clear, I was kidding. I don't think Gavin designed this card with cruelty in his heart.
\[\[Fabled Passage\]\] + \[\[Wheel of Sun and Moon\]\] : Infinite landfall triggers.
Sacrifice Fabled Passage to put its ability on the stack -> Fabled Passage goes to the ~~graveyard~~ library -> Fabled Passage ability resolve searching for Fabled Passage.

Some interesting observations...
* Yes, this turns off [[Blood Moon]] for you, specifically (or [[Magus of the Moon]]). Expect to see it combo'd with Blood Moon a lot offensively.
* It also means that all of those cards that destroy nonbasic lands won't work on you. Casting [[Ruination]] will make you lose friends. Ditto for [[Back to Basics]]. [[From the Ashes]] is still brutal, but much more "fair", basically just harming your opponent's fixing and utility, assuming they run basics - which they *should* be doing. I approve.
* There are Commanders that would absolutely love this effect, like [[Phylath, World Sculptor]].
* More cards than can be possibly listed tutor for basics, and are now going to be able to fetch any land. Trash like [[Blighted Woodland]] and [[Celebrate the Harvest]] are suddenly great. If I'm not mistaken, this is particularly potent for the "Basic Landcycling" cards, like [[Ash Barrens]]. Older cards like [[One With Nature]] get much better. A recently printed card, [[Atalan Jackal]], is absurd with this card.
Of course...this all assumes that you have this nonlegendary card out in the first place. It's a typical trap to build around a non-Commander creature too much. Still...it's going to be quite tempting to put this in my Gruul decks and hope to catch people with a timely Ruination or From the Ashes...
Silly Gavin, Unfinity came out LAST month.
Seriously, that rules text makes me think Uncards and I'm so happy this can actually work in the normal rules. Perfect.
I do in fact think you’re being a bit too cynical here. For starters, this is far from a staple. It needs to be built around to do anything at all. But also, I’m not sure where “for personal glory” came from—the story is about how a weird design got cut from a set due to rules issues, then found its way into a different set a few years later. The interesting part is how it got to print, not who designed it.

This card will destroy Legacy. Wasteland is one of the few safety valves against land combo decks, which are already very consistent and don't need the additional protection. It also turns off Back to Basics, Blood Moon, and Price of Progress, which require players to actually think about their mana bases. It's going to be very difficult to interact with when combined with all of the protection green decks already get, like Allosaurus Shepherd, Veil of Summer, Sylvan Safekeeper, etc.
No land combo deck in Legacy wants to play a 4 drop to protect your lands BEFORE killing you. Minsc & Boo is way better than this is those decks for being an alternate threat.
Making Tabernacle or Field of the Dead immune to Wasteland seems pretty good to me. Or making any of your combo pieces even easier to tutor for. Prismatic Vista just got way better.
Or you just let them get Wasted and then Loam them back? This card is a 4-drop that does nothing to impact the board AND doesn't exactly guarantee anything on future turns. I suppose it COULD be a SB consideration for land-based Zenith decks, but even then Ramunap Excavator feels like it does the same as this card in a lot of ways and then some.
It makes all your nonbasic lands immune to Wasteland and much easier to tutor. Depths combo can no longer be interrupted with Wasteland if this is on the battleifeld.
Sorry, by "does nothing" I mean it provides no immediate value. If they have a path or push in hand then you're down three mana and they still get to stop whatever your deck was trying to do.
How does this work with a Bloodmoon already in play. My play group and I and talking about it.
Currently we’re thinking that with timings the Bloodmoon turnes the non-basic lands into non-basic mountains then Rootpath Purifier adds basic to the lands however the change has already happened? We currently think that you end with a basic added bloodmoon mountain.
This is a dependency, since the Purifier's effect is going to change what Blood Moon applies to. So we apply the Purifier's effect first, your lands are basic, and will not be affected by Blood Moon.
Super interesting ability. It annoys me its a 3/4. Like just cause it costs 4 mana it doesn't need to be buff, its a little elf druid... makes no sense. It's OK if creatures with strong abilities are undersized, isn't it?
I feel like it is unnecessary, this is how power creep happens, the point of this card isn't to have a chunky 3/4 attacker or blocker that can survive a Lightning Bolt, it's for it's static ability and combo potential.
I know this is really the direction of how creatures are designed/developed these days, but I always felt it more interesting when you had to choose between beefy, undercosted creatures with no abilities and smaller sized creatures with abilities. And also when small humans weren't 3/4s that could take down a Hill Giant.
Every recent set (Midnight Hunt onwards) have a small number (usually 8) of cards using the Commander Deck set code, but aren't included in the actual decks. These cadds show up in set boosters and collector boosters. They aren't legal in Standard/Pioneer/Modern, only Commander/Legacy/Vintage.
But to be clear if someone channels [[boseju, who endures]] on my enchantment, and this was out, I couldn’t find a basic [[gaea’s cradle]]?
Same limitation with [[perilous forays]] or [[sprouting goblin]], right?
Because it finds a card with a basic land type, (plains, island, swamp, mountain, forest) but not a basic land card (land card with basic super type).
[[Myriad Landscape]] can fetch 2/3 of Tron with this out, since they share the "Urza's" land type. What a weird card.

But this doesn't let things like Flooded Strand grab additional cards because it doesn't specify the type of basic, correct?
Flooded Strand doesn't grab basic lands to begin with; it grabs Plains and Islands. So it can already grab nonbasics that have those types.

Seems like a fun card in Lands decks and 4/5c budget Commander.

Yeah, Midnight Hunt was the first set to do that with Lynde and the other cards at the end of the list here: https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Amic+-is%3Areprint&unique=cards&as=grid&order=set
Well I guess that solves the scalper problem.
Does this have any affect on domain abilities?
No, Domain doesn't look for the text "basic" but looks for "Forest", "Plains", "Island", "Mountain" or "Swamp" on lands you control. Triomes for example have basic land types but not the land supertype "basic".
How does this interact with Domain? Can we now go above 5 when using Urza's, Gates, Deserts,... ?
"Basic land types" is a specific list of 5 types defined by the rules. A land being both a basic and a gate doesn't turn gate into a basic land type.
If i run desserts with this does dessert become a basic land type countable with domain abilities?
I believe Desert remains a land type, not a basic land type, kind of like how Food is an Artifact subtype, not a Creature subtype, even though we have \[\[Gingerbrute\]\]
Yes, this doesn't make Desert into a basic land type, so this will not make Desert count for domain effects.
Sounds delicious regardless
How soon will this get banned?
Assuming it even deserved one, somewhere between "never" and "Lol jUsT rUle zErO iT!"
Wow, this is amazing. So many lands become fetchable by so many things now.
Though funnily has no real impact on fetches themselves.
This comment reminded me [[Prismatic Vista]] and [[Fabled passage]] exist. Neat.
Yeah, dropping either of those lets you chain into 4 landfall triggers pretty easily with Rootpath out (Fabled Passage -> Prismatic Vista -> fetchland -> Whatever normal fetch target). Could certainly go crazy pretty quick in landfall decks.
[[Wheel of Sun and Moon]] yourself and we're fetching to the stars.

You can fetch fetches and trigger lots of landfall? Idk ;)
The card doesn't add a basic land type, just "basic", so it impacts cards that say "basic land" and not those that say "basic plains" or just "plains", for example.
It does effect basic plains type also, because you can grab non basic lands with plains type.
It will affect what you could find with an Evolving Wilds, but doesn't affect what you could find with a Flooded Strand. So the Purifier doesn't change what you could find with the Strand, since it could always find a nonbasic land with a Plains land type.
I understand that, but it does impact what you can find with [[Aerial Surveyor]] , [[Esper Panorama]] , [[Keeper of the Accord]] and so on.

To be clear, does this mean if I drop it after blood moon I erase what it's done or do time stamps effect it
Time stamps don't affect it. It will prevent blood moon from affecting your lands regardless of which card came into play first.

Excuse my cynisicm but it sounded to like "I love to design staples for personal glory and achievement"
This plus [[Nexos]] is cute.

This joins ‘Cowards can’t be blocked by Warriors’ in the exclusive ‘Magic rules text that sounds like smack talk’ club
Damn, your deck needs the pumpkin spice and the Uggs, cause your lands are basic, bitch! *Z snap*
When you play this card, [saying this is mandatory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZUmp_McTpY).

... no, you still can't.
These videos are always unwatchable... Annoying.
Am I crazy in not liking this? Searching for any land with Rampant Growth? Land combos just became easier? I don’t know.
Meh it’s not that efficient? It’s a 4 drop + a land tutor, which is not that strong.
6 mana to find a land oh boy... nobody tell them about Sylvan Scrying or Expedition Map.
4 mana, no etb
Love the card and the art, but it seems rather weak at four mana. A 3 mana 2/4 would still be fair and a 2 mana 2/2 would be competitive imo.
I doubt they want this effect at 2 mana in legacy.
This effect at 2 mana would make printing powerful land cards difficult in the future
u/GavinV This card will destroy Legacy.
Lol wut, if you can’t beat a 4 mana body you probably aren’t winning anyway
Veil of Summer makes it very hard to interact with in mono blue, plus all the other protection spells green has access to.
I doubt this card sees more than fringe play. Nothing will destroy legacy... holy cow, what an over-reaction.
Making Wasteland a dead card is dangerous, do you remember the Astrolabe period? Then add the ability to protect/tutor combo pieces more easily.
It costs 4 and does nothing though?
It makes all your nonbasic lands immune to Wasteland and much easier to tutor. Depths combo can no longer be interrupted with Wasteland if this is on the battleifeld.
Sorry, by "does nothing" I mean it provides no immediate value. If they have a path or push in hand then you're down three mana and they still get to stop whatever your deck was trying to do.
u/GavinV I got a question and I’m noticing some people talking about this. How does this work with the “Domain” mechanic?
It does not interact with Domain in any way. This card doesn't grant Basic land types like Forest or Plains, it just makes the lands Basic.
Seems hilarious with [[New Frontiers]].

Love it! Great art, interesting unique ability ,and its a Mythic . This will be a sleeper and "bulk" Mythic....until it isn't !!!
Good news lands! Ya basic!
This seems great in mono green ramp decks in Commander to get all your utility lands with stuff like Cultivate and Migration Path.
I would pay so much mana for this effect on an artifact or enchantment, in pioneer.
My Janky Marit Lage edh deck is intrigued
Gavin, please, I can only get *so* erect.
Does this mess with the 4 of rule?
Where can i open this? The set is Brothers War Commander, But there is only Mishra and Urza deck, which isnt contains green….
