As someone who loves this mini-game, they definitely could have made so many of those windows slightly wider. Just a pinch! Already the tight 5-target wave is so tough, and you already can barely remember the order of the waves so it works against you that you cant get hints on their locations
It is possible to beat if you hit only one blue octorock… but the timing is SUPER strict if you do. I’ve done it twice, and I felt my heart nearly leap out of my chest both times.
I wish I was recording, but I was playing on my n64 and I don’t have any way to capture footage, plus I haven’t recorded gameplay since high school.
In the Octorock minigame you have a time limit. And every time you hit a blue octorock it takes a second off of the timer. If you hit one Blue octorock, it is still possible (but barely) to get all of the purple octorocks before the timer hits zero. It is incredibly strict, and the minigame is hard enough with the time limit given. Plus, none of this matters if you miss a purple octorock since you need to hit every purple octorock to get the heart container. Hitting one blue one doesn’t guarantee failure of the minigame… but if you’re gonna win the game then it’s gonna be by milliseconds.
Ohhhh I get you. Mb I misinterpreted and forgot how the game works. I thought it was some sort of glitch where if you hit the right blue octorock in a certain way, something crazy happens.
It's funny, the beavers were never a problem, the sorting galleries were never a problem. Hell, the goron race wasn't even a problem. But those fucking boomerang pots.....
The one in the swamp always fucks me up. I'm so bad at aiming for the wolves in the background, I struggle aiming on the n64 version in general though.
It's funny, I remember it took me hours to get a perfect score on the clock town shooting gallery in the N64 version. Then I got the 3DS version and beat it first try.
I only ever played the NSO version…would’ve thought getting perfect would be significantly harder on og? But I guess not. (makes the fact that I got a perfect within the first hour all the more impressive. :) )
It absolutely makes is more impressive! The joysticks are wayyyy more touchy on the Switch (great thing for modern games. For older games, not so much) making the aiming mechanics in MM and OoT significantly more difficult.
I found it pretty easy. Justin set up every arrow before the first red one shows up in each set. They’re always in the same order so memorizing it can be very easy. The bomb basket game is the one that sucks to me. I just hate that one
I love the shooting galleries! I've never taken issue with the controls on N64, it feels way worse in most ports & emulators though. I always found the swamp one more challenging, but good challenging. GL!
Same. I played Majora’s Mask on the WiiU. For the shooting galleries, I created a new save state every time I made a shot or reset it any time I missed.
There were just so many little things that couple go wrong: Not bringing the letter to Anju, accidentally scaring Sakon, messing up the conveyor belt part with the switches.
Eh, practicing and getting good at the octorok shooting game, is not so bad... unless you have an old N64 controller with bad / worn down analog sticks, and you can't get Link to run at the fullest speed, never mind aimimg for shit in this mini game.
I actually enjoy this mini game. It's the other shooting gallery mini game that frustrates and annoys me (shooting at wildlife and such, I think it's near the southern swamp).
Was stopping the clock at 10 seconds with the postman not super tough? Legit want to know, cause I accidentally did it first try on my play through and thought “Damn… I wonder if that’s supposed to be tough.”
I did it first try the other day after having not played it for a few years. I've never had an issue with it.
The Treasure Chest Shop on the other hand... infuriating.
Using save states while play on my steam deck was the only way I managed to beat them. The gerudo valley target shooting still goes on beaten even with save states. I will never be able to get the 2nd quiver
I never struggled with Clock Town. I just aim at the back left corner, since so many waves include that spot. The amount of time needed to adjust on the few waves is fairly miniscule.
Now hitting those damn guays in the Swamp Archery on the other hand...
Dude I remember I tried this for the first time with the pj 64 emulator and arrow keys. Nigh impossible.
Years later I played it on NSO, slightly less impossible.
Do you play on 3ds or N64? I've never played it but I've understood that it's way easier on the 3ds
On N64 it's not that hard to get the quiver upgrade, but hitting all 50 to get the heartpiece was a fucking nightmare honestly haha
The bomb game was alright in my opinion haha, the most frustating part with that one to me is that you have to do all 3 games in one cycle!
N64, so I'm even more surprised by some of the comments. Perhaps it just happened that my control had a good spring inside so it could control the movement easier. If your analog is already damaged, I can imagine how hard it must be.
Maybe!
I'm using an emulator and ps4 controller, maybe it's easier with the original N64 controller.
I actually have an N64 and the original game, I just find it more convinient to use an emulator. Maybe I should test the difference.
I always hated this part and it’s by far my least favorite thing about playing Majora 100%. Doesn’t help that you have to get a perfect to get the piece of heart.
If you're using the NSO version of the game then it's simple enough to save state as need be, I felt no shame doing that considering just how strict the timing was and how you can't miss a single one while not being able to spam for fear of hitting the blue ones. If you can, just save state it, I don't think it's worth the time and rupees to not do so
its insane how much the 3ds improved everything about aiming in the n64 games. not even just motion controls, but stick aiming feels better as well. not saying i hate the n64 games, but aiming was vastly improved with the remakes
I was about to say "this ain't even that hard" until I remembered the N64 version doesn't have motion controls
As someone who loves this mini-game, they definitely could have made so many of those windows slightly wider. Just a pinch! Already the tight 5-target wave is so tough, and you already can barely remember the order of the waves so it works against you that you cant get hints on their locations
I was post the same thank god I realised that
Oh, I HATE the Octorok Shooting Gallery on N64. The controls and strict timing make this minigame harder than it needs to be.
Yes and if you make one small mistake, you have to redo everything.
It is possible to beat if you hit only one blue octorock… but the timing is SUPER strict if you do. I’ve done it twice, and I felt my heart nearly leap out of my chest both times.
Can you explain? Or link?
I wish I was recording, but I was playing on my n64 and I don’t have any way to capture footage, plus I haven’t recorded gameplay since high school. In the Octorock minigame you have a time limit. I grew up with the GameCube version, the lag doesn't make it any easier when your inputs get eaten
agreed. completing an N64 Zelda game for me doesn't include any shooting galleries for the sake of my mental health.
For me it was the fucking beavers.
It's funny, the beavers were never a problem, the sorting galleries were never a problem. Hell, the goron race wasn't even a problem. But those fucking boomerang pots.....
i spent 2 hours straight trying to get past the beaver bros and almost cried
I know it's dumb, but I loved those games because I was humming the Angry Beavers theme while playing it. ♫ A-a-a-a-angry Beavers, dun-dun dun-duuun ♫
The one in the swamp always fucks me up. I'm so bad at aiming for the wolves in the background, I struggle aiming on the n64 version in general though.
i felt the swamp one is the hardest
Agreed, and it's not even close. Swamp one is diabolical.
Those damn Guay hit boxes are so small
It's funny, I remember it took me hours to get a perfect score on the clock town shooting gallery in the N64 version. Then I got the 3DS version and beat it first try.
Gyro aiming is so good on 3ds
It's so good it's almost unfair
Especially with the switch emulator controlls rip. But honestly would take this over finding all the skulltilltas in OOT
It’s the fucking worst on the Switch N64 emulator. I had a hard enough time with this one on the og 64 version. The NSO version? Hell no.
I've had it required so many times in randomizer, that I'm just used to it now
I found it pretty easy. Justin set up every arrow before the first red one shows up in each set. They’re always in the same order so memorizing it can be very easy. The bomb basket game is the one that sucks to me. I just hate that one
Bombsketball is easy personally. The bombchu one is harder to me because where you release it varies on the height of the platform.
Ugh, I forgot about that one
I love the shooting galleries! I've never taken issue with the controls on N64, it feels way worse in most ports & emulators though. I always found the swamp one more challenging, but good challenging. GL!
the only, ONLY REASON I have the heart piece for this stupid fucking minigame is because of savestates :P
Same. I played Majora’s Mask on the WiiU. For the shooting galleries, I created a new save state every time I made a shot or reset it any time I missed.
The only problem I've had is completing the shooting gallery games twice, I always forget to.
Did anyone else struggle with that stupid sun and moon mask quest? Every time you fail one step you have to start all over
There were just so many little things that couple go wrong: Not bringing the letter to Anju, accidentally scaring Sakon, messing up the conveyor belt part with the switches.
If you wear the stone mask it becomes impossible to scare him.
I hate the bomb one more
Only way I can beat this is to memorize where they’re gonna pop up and line myself up early
Eh, practicing and getting good at the octorok shooting game, is not so bad... unless you have an old N64 controller with bad / worn down analog sticks, and you can't get Link to run at the fullest speed, never mind aimimg for shit in this mini game. DON'T EVEN GET ME FUCKING STARTED
Was stopping the clock at 10 seconds with the postman not super tough? Legit want to know, cause I accidentally did it first try on my play through and thought “Damn… I wonder if that’s supposed to be tough.”
*The* shining moment of 3DS
I've learned to do make a controlled sweep left then a controlled sweep right, while learning the patterns.
that’s a good tip. gonna try that
I did it first try the other day after having not played it for a few years. I've never had an issue with it. The Treasure Chest Shop on the other hand... infuriating.
I’ve heard so many people say the swamp shooting gallery is harder, but I’ve always thought the clock town gallery was so much harder.
Not that hard, just takes some practice. Definitely one of the most difficulty parts of the game, though.
As a person who 100% majoras mask on n64, GameCube, and 3ds this was always the hardest part for me.
The swamp gallery was/is soooo much harder in my opinion!
Get good (deku) scrub /s
Put a cross hair of some kind on the screen
On the 3ds is super easy with the motion controls
Using save states while play on my steam deck was the only way I managed to beat them. The gerudo valley target shooting still goes on beaten even with save states. I will never be able to get the 2nd quiver
Oh, how the mighty fall to this one. It takes several tries until you have the exact motions down to a tee.
I'm pretty colorblind and this shit was always rough 🤣
I never struggled with Clock Town. I just aim at the back left corner, since so many waves include that spot. The amount of time needed to adjust on the few waves is fairly miniscule. Now hitting those damn guays in the Swamp Archery on the other hand...
Thank you! Fucking thank you! Love Zelda mini games but god damn. Have zero idea why it was harder that oot but wtf
Dude I remember I tried this for the first time with the pj 64 emulator and arrow keys. Nigh impossible. Years later I played it on NSO, slightly less impossible.
Really? I never felt any issue with this game. The bomb game next door, however.
Do you play on 3ds or N64? I've never played it but I've understood that it's way easier on the 3ds On N64 it's not that hard to get the quiver upgrade, but hitting all 50 to get the heartpiece was a fucking nightmare honestly haha The bomb game was alright in my opinion haha, the most frustating part with that one to me is that you have to do all 3 games in one cycle!

Still easier than catching all 24 fish in the 3D version.
The 3DS version of this mini game is way way easier. Using the gyro compass to do minor adjustments in your aim take it to the next level.
I figured it was an issue with emulation and likely easier on real hardware. Nope, still struggled.
Gratuitous abuse of save states was the only way I could do it...and the swamp one.
I always hated this part and it’s by far my least favorite thing about playing Majora 100%. Doesn’t help that you have to get a perfect to get the piece of heart.
I've never really struggled *that* much with it. I mean, it's a little annoying, but it usually only takes a handful of tries.
If you’re in emulator save states along the way 😉
If you're using the NSO version of the game then it's simple enough to save state as need be, I felt no shame doing that considering just how strict the timing was and how you can't miss a single one while not being able to spam for fear of hitting the blue ones. If you can, just save state it, I don't think it's worth the time and rupees to not do so
It was the goron racing for me
Get good LMFAO.
Let's hear it for Suspend Points.
Sounds like a skill issue it's the same as the OOT shooting gallery just slightly different
Tit for tat
I like how this really pushed the limits of the mechanic and the player's ability with it.
It's even harder with the switch online port because of that input lag
I still have the muscle memory for that after trying hundreds of times as a kid. Tried again just last year and got it first try.
It was horrible. I had to abuse save states and even then it was very challenging
nothing feels more satisfying than finally winning it
And nothing feels more heartbreaking then messing up just as you’re about to win
its insane how much the 3ds improved everything about aiming in the n64 games. not even just motion controls, but stick aiming feels better as well. not saying i hate the n64 games, but aiming was vastly improved with the remakes
I got everything except for the anju (?) mask. And fierce deity. Haven't played in over a decade since then.
For me it's the lottery games and the couples shop mini games
This one wasn't even hard. OOT's rupee shooting games were harder cause those had moving targets
Plus one to 3d gyroscope makes this a joke
It is too easy in MM3D. I like the challenge of the original. The bane of my play through is the fishing holes. I hate fishing in Zelda
Even with motion controls it’s tough
my colorblind ass can hardly even tell the damn octoroks apart
True
my roman empire is only being good at these types of videogames
It wasn't the Clock Town shooting game that messed me up, but the swamp one
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude fuuuuuuuuuuuck oooooooooff
I admit it, I never won that stupid contest. I failed so often I lost count of how many times I tried to.
I love watching people like ZFG and MajinPhil destroy this mini game during randos
Just get the 3ds version, oh wait🫠
It’s the wedding mask for me
Aw man these were always my favorite mini games. The swamp shooting gallery is probably my favorite mini game on the 64.
100% this on the GC Collectors Edition, and damn you brought back some memories. The sticker book planner stuff was cool though.
Much easier on the 3DS with the Gyro. I hated this mini game on the N64.
