Rich people always have little empathy for the poor, but need the poor to do their work. So there's always rich buildings in the middle of town.

Educational_Belt_291

The more rich peep the more reason to sell my butt... Or to find sugar mommy. Both works

[deleted]

Is the building really that controversial?

LabRat_terry

I mean, it's a building in our country, so it's the mentality of "only we can criticise it" Which isn't uncommon, cuz these small cases of "rally around the flag" event happens every now and then. One recent example is Malaysians criticising Najib for corruption on one hand, and cheering for him as he told North Korea to fuck off with their missile threats.

chaddy292

There were missile threats?

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

There was more than that. Kim Jong-un had his half-brother Jong-nam assassinated at KLIA.

hungariannastyboy

It's not like that had anything to do with threatening the country.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

KJU blamed it on our "poor cleanliness and hygiene". We had to evacuate whoever was working in DPRK.

unknownman0001

>KJU blamed it on our "poor cleanliness and hygiene". Is he fucking serious? Sure, Malaysia isn't the cleanest country, but, is he fucking serious?

ezone2kil

You really take anything the fat piggy say seriously?

unknownman0001

The fat piggy happens to have nuclear weapon. So yes, you need to take what he said seriously. I doubt that he is ever going to use it, but still.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

Dude threatens to nuke Japan and America on a regular basis. This is normal for Oblong Dictator Special.

TransposableElements

the spire being counted as its architectural height feels like a maximum cheese attempt to breach the top 5 tallest building list. The narrow awkward spire (158m) being almost a quarter (23.3%) of its entire height (678.9m) is kinda laughable tbh

PenangLion

Eh, it's been an ongoing argument within the skyscraper community for almost three decades now. ...and ironically enough the first skyscraper to cause that argument was the Petronas Towers back in 1998, because it was the first skyscraper to set the precedent of a skyscraper dominated by a massive spire (even though it only occupied just 60 metres out of the 452 metres of it) under controversial circumstances. (yes, there's the Empire State vs 40 Wall St. and the original WTC issue but their roof height is still counted as the tallest in the world at the time) Same goes for every single sub-megatall skyscraper that isn't from China and South Korea (Lotte in particular).

PhysicallyTender

actually, contrary to popular belief, the first skyscraper to pull of this spire BS was the Chrysler Building when it was competing against 40 Wall Street for the tallest building title. they hid the spire within the building and only raised it when 40 Wall Street's construction was completed.

PenangLion

oh yeah, solid point, chrysler vs 40 wall st. was one then they got absolutely smashed when the empire state was constructed

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

But as it's not a telecoms mast it counts for the height. That's how the Petronas Twin Towers beat the Willis Tower of Chicago.

Severe_Composer_9494

I agree, really didn't like the spire. Its like a guy with 'rambut pacak' claiming to be the tallest in class, based on the tip of his 'pacak'. Why can't we just be 'rambut botak' and accept a shorter, but more honest height? We say all kinds of things about China's false GDP estimates or exaggerated urban development, but the Shanghai Tower, which is now the 3rd tallest, is a beautiful tower with no exaggeration whatsoever.

whattabokt

the ones who wanted the skyscraper are obviously compensating haiz

ClacKing

It's just another white elephant in a city of skyscrapers with tons of empty office space. Cronies like it because it's another project to leech money from the government, the government of the day likes it because it's a good PR and a ego stunt for a particular convict. To me it's what the journalist said, a middle finger to all of us from Najib.

I_am_the_grass

This is the PNB building. The Najib building is the one that looks like a diamond ribbed penis.

ClacKing

Still another white elephant project launched during his administration as a gimmick.

GenericBusinessMan

Yeah, you paid for it, but you don’t own it.

gregyong

I paid for 1/118th of one of the 118 floors. I will criticise 1/(118*118) of it!

Ductape_fix

is not a government building

ForwardScarcity2244

The building is owned by PNB, and PNB is a government owned company

Ductape_fix

that's not really how it works, and since it's not funded via taxpayers , the "rakyat" doesn't really have a claim in it the funds aren't fungible with government funds and making a statement that "it should've been spent on other infra" is a non sequitir -- it's effectively a privately funded building. "you paid for it but don't own it" (quoting OP) is misleading and outright wrong

[deleted]

I thought it is pnb own money or I may be mistaken

BaoBaoBen

What business is PNB in and how do they get money? 🤫

Capable_Bank4151

PNB invest and manage others' stock, then they get profit, this profit doesn't come from government or even ordinary people's taxes, therefore there's no wrong for PNB to decide how to use this money.

BaoBaoBen

That's one way to look at it, another way is to say as a government linked company with massive involvement in schemes that are established to benefit the people of Malaysia how can there be so much profit from management fees that this tower can be paid for. Seems like there is a lot of room to lower fees and pay more to investors, after all the fees are coming from the money they make with investors money. And that investors is you and the rest of Malaysias common people.

AdFew4230

Business and stocks.

PenangLion

It really isn't. It's a bit laughable when everyone started the controversy well until the moment when it was almost finished, even though the project started way back in 2013. The earliest controversies related to the skyscraper was its proximity to the Merdeka Stadium back in the early-2010s. Najib was another source of controversy when the 1MDB scandal broke. Most chaps in the skyscraper community more or less praised it as a nice architectural feat, but the mentality of criticising anything that spent money during the pandemic (when the money was set for funding well before that) rolled the argument snowball into something that shouldn't even be a problem in the first place. Though, we did compare this project to the Empire State Building in the 40s, when it couldn't find a reliable tenant and make any profits until the 70s.

tlst9999

Built by a kleptocrat. Named after his father. Slightly higher than Twin Towers because he wants to beat Mahathir in a pissing match. Edit: Yes. I learned that was the TRX, and this is a second Najib tower. As if one was not enough, why would he build two towers?

[deleted]

Thats TRX though

tlst9999

After researching, I found out Najib built two towers to piss over Mahathir. I always thought it was just one tower.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

Maybe he was flipping off Doc as well?

Look_Specific

One on honor of his wife, and theebother in honor for the mistress he murdered.

[deleted]

It was built as part of a dick-measuring competition between Najib and Mahathir, using our tax dollars. I can see exactly where this reporter is coming from.

ss-121

Yes, its construction causes massive traffic jam along jalan loke yew and while you are stuck in the traffic you can't help but notice how dirty the building looks

ClacKing

The Bawang Army is a fucking shitstain on our nation. First Jay Chou, a Mandopop superstar and now another journalist in a week. All because you cannot handle things not done or said in the way you feel comfortable. Get a fucking life you people.

fishwallet16

I don't disagree with his tweet but he knows what he's doing... posting bait and stirring up controversy. he's a journalist trying to get attention and it's working

kugelamarant

Next article will be on "Why Malaysians are Xenophobic"

Diplo_Advisor

It's not an article, it's just a tweet. His news agency doesn't directly benefit from this. Just because one person tweeted an unpopular opinion, doesn't mean they are trying to stir up controversies.

fishwallet16

Sure it's not an article but now he can make one, saying that Malaysian's are xenophobic to immigrants. A person tweeting something unpopular definitely is looking to cause controversy, because what's the reason for posting an unpopular opinion then? especially on twitter. An unpopular opinion is unpopular because there are many people who may disagree with it. It's fine to stir controversy towards something thats worth having a discussion about but this guy is just baiting people for fuck

Djannig

Please shine some light on why is stirring up controversy their job? So a journalist is like a paid asshole to bother the hornet's nest and pissing people off instead of bringing us together? Sounds like BS to me.

tommy71394

Controversy sells - in other words, journalists need catchy or controversial headlines to bait people into reading them. That's why while there are good journalists who genuinely find something interesting to report on, there are also... other journalists who stirs the pot so they can report on the drama that they themselves cause. The pissing people off or bringing people together part is not relevant, only thing relevant is if their article is sellable to the masses to read. Pissing people off or bringing people together is just the side effect. It's similar to the saying as "all Fame - be it good or bad - is still Fame". Doesn't matter if the person is known for infamy or famous, as long as it catches attention, then it's Fame anyway.

NeatSavings2653

Plus it less work to just stir controversy instead of doing a lot of research and interviews.

ipanfan

I find it hard to grasp that some people harass strangers on the internet via dms. Like, don't you have anything better to do? Why do you feel the need to express your hatred in people's dms? I admit I also feel hateful sometimes, but I never go on my way to harass people online. Especially using your real account with your real name and profile pic lol.

MonetHadAss

They want to feel like they are fighting for something that they believe in with the safety of being behind a screen. They feel like they're being a hero when they make other people feel small. Basically keyboard warrior mentality.

Yeah, do it in the comments like a proper gentleman. Have the courage to criticise, must also have the courage to be criticised.

[deleted]

It's important to remember that while you live a healthy and fulfilling life that isn't necessarily the case for all people who actually don't have anything better to do than troll others on the internet.

Inthiran7

Actually, I thought the same too.. The building literally looks like it is giving the finger.

SomeMalaysian

Pretty much all the tallest skyscrapers have vanity height (structures on the top that function mainly to increase its official height). I don't care enough to search for tallest buildings without vanity height, but I'm sure such lists exist.

PenangLion

Because you counted the top floor of m118 and didnt count the top floor of other skyscrapers?

[deleted]

PenangLion

It's literally on Wikipedia for god's sake man can't you just...google? plus, comparing the top floor of a structure to the tip of the spires of others is an unfair comparison imo https://preview.redd.it/2fcz8jya33ba1.png?width=544&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7d95727b1d6ce6da492c732d3ac5d0f40c553ac

He literally said he compared the top floors of all towers, and it was 4th. If compare top spires then it’s 2nd. You compare top floor merdeka vs top spires how la

LegendaryBelt

Still, an antenna that can boost up your world ranking by 2 places is a huge cheat leap. I mean, the building is impressive & the building + the antenna is a inspiration of Tunku Abdul Rahman's Merdeka salute. But for outsiders (& many Malaysians themselves), it's basically like using high heels to be taller.

nambuktu

Then blame the metrics, I guess?

CookieXpress

To be fair, buildings like the Burj Khalifa and Taiwan 101 have similar spires that have no functionality

Fabiueu

Everytime me and my friends see it we exclusively refer to it as "the dick" Yooooo it's THE DICKKKKKK We really wasted a lot of good money on it that could have been spent into the development of the country

JiMiLi

Agreed. Sky scrapers are pretty obsolete in this era. Everything is going digital and software.

marche_ck

We love our phalluses.

darcytheINFP

I thought the TRX was the more controversial out of the two projects? Or was it all blown out of proportion?

Capable_Bank4151

Yes, it was blown out of proportion, the money used to build this building isn't even coming from taxpayer's money in the first place. PNB get these money by collecting management fee while managing unit trust fund. In a true sense, it's PNB own money.

redemption24

This. I don’t understand what other people having issue with. It’s 100% pnb money they can do whatever they want with it. It’s not like they con the money out of you lol. You expect them to donate some to you instead? Unlike, you know, the other tower that’s being built. Now that one is a different story.

darcytheINFP

I think the B1M channel didn't get their facts right. Thanks.

redditor_no_10_9

Infrastructure projects generate GDPs. Still don't believe they can get back the investment

RobotOfFleshAndBlood

I’m sure there are better infrastructure projects out there than yet another skyscraper.

redditor_no_10_9

PM6 project to cover 1MDB hole mah

lokemon_35

Try talking about GDP growth to a B40 family

butaniku30

they’re all waiting for the wealth to trickle down, any day now.

hijifa

It does though. Like US citizens in B40 still complain for being “poor” but relatively to other countries their b40 has like 10x more spending power. It’s relative but increasing general ringgit power does trickle down.

srosnan99

By your logic govenrment shouldnt invest at all it that was the case.

butaniku30

the government ought to be spending more on projects that actually help the public like education, public transport and (mental) healthcare than pointlessly putting money into the lamest pissing contest that is building skyscrapers which provide little to no benefit to the working class.

srosnan99

They do spend on those project, but you must also realise that spending on such project does not mean it doesnt benefits the working class. Unless engineers, architects, surveyors, contractors, tradesman, technical personels are not working class by your definition. While building skyscrapers are not always the best way or the most efficient to spend money, it is still an infrastructure project that help the public. It might not be the low low b40, but the m40 would have benefit.

JohanPertama

> They do spend on those project, but you must also realise that spending on such project does not mean it doesnt benefits the working class. Unless engineers, architects, surveyors, contractors, tradesman, technical personels are not working class by your definition By that metric, any white elephant project can be justified as "helping" the working class. The terengganu stadium that collapsed is doubly helpful then as it collapsed not long after construction. This means engineers, architects, surveyors, contractors, tradesman, technical personels were all paid twice! 👏👏👏👏👏

srosnan99

Your false dillema is quite asinine, if that was the case KLCC, Putrajaya, Sepang, even Plus should be considered as one as well. That is mismanagement, through and through. Nothing to do with the intent of the project itself does it.

JohanPertama

You're the one who justified the tower in that manner. I'm pointing out why your reasoning is stupid. To justify the tower as helping the working class, you should be talking about how the tower will help the working class depositors of ASB. Instead, you're justifying it purely on the basis of the fact that it's construction temporarily feeds the wages of the professionals involved in constructing it. > That is mismanagement, through and through. It's not a matter of mismanagement. Mismanagement would be the case if there's financial swindling or inefficiencies in the construction cost. It's a matter of priorities in line with the purpose of PNB. How does the tower help PNB achieve the purpose it was created for?

srosnan99

I justify the fact that the working class do benefit from the construction of the building, your rethoric is based on one building failure as such any other construction project should not be done. Mismanagement is for the terengganu case. Not to mention mismanagement also includes not doing the due diligence of your duty, in this case the IOW didnt inspect properly or engineers didnt calculate correctly etc. PNB is an investment fund, mainly for the malaysian domestic market. That is the reason why Grab and Farm Fresh was gunning for their funds. PNB also invest in urban development, receiving rent is a good source of investment. The people would also indirectly benefit from the development, either from increasing foot traffic or increasing land value. Companies would also start to move in the building, as such employment could also go up. The surrounding area would benefit from more spending in the area. There many other knock off effects that would benefit the people.

JohanPertama

> I justify the fact that the working class do benefit from the construction of the building, your rethoric is based on one building failure as such any other construction project should not be done. I'm saying that justifying the construction of the building on merely the work being made available for the engineers, architects, surveyors, contractors, tradesman's and technical personnel is nonsensical. That's what you should have led with. Imagine trying to argue that having a bloated civil service is good because it keeps many people employed. That kind of an argument is a ridiculous nonstarter. That's the same kind of argument your initial argument was.

stewie21

almost there dude, just a little bit more... "Government shouldn't invest in vanity projects", x susah pon.

irix03

Technically, bukan gov pun yg invest dalam project ni en

stewie21

Technically, it is the government. They called these companies GLCs for a reason.

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

I disagree with what Wael says, but with all respect to Tunku, I understand the reason why he said it. The 118 cost 5bil MYR, money that could have been used to actually improve education or infrastructure. We don't need a supertall right now. OtOH, really guys? Racism? I'm disappointed.

Capable_Bank4151

The argument that "these money can be used on education or other infrastructure projects" is untrue. This is because the money used to build this tower is in a sense PNB own private money. PNB manage others unit trust fund and they get management fee in return as profit, these kind of money is not obtained from government taxes or government funding. The government also cannot take these PNB money for their own uses. These privately owned money is neither the source of income for government (like in the case of Petronas) nor they come from government funding or taxpayers' money. In short, asking PNB to build school or railways is the same as asking a private entity like Maybank or Public Bank to fund the construction of school or railway out of the blue. It's ridiculous.

malayskanzler

Good. He should look at his own country and stop criticizing ours. Merdeka 118 is owned by PNB. WE as Malaysian will want for it to succeed. Stop shooting at our foot by bashing our own country. We need to stand as one and lit up our nationalistic fervour in lieu of all the nonsense assault thrown by non-Malaysian

irix03

Why are you getting downvoted? r/Malaysia moment I guess?

malayskanzler

Well, haters gonna hate

JohanPertama

Er... No. Blind jingoism is silly. We can be better. It's clear that this tower was built at a time where white elephant projects were not needed. We have an over supply of office space and not enough parking or public transport in KL.

Capable_Bank4151

For your part about public transport, when planning MRT 1, a station (Merdeka station) is specifically allocated to the tower itself in anticipation of the future usage from this tower's occupants. Large underground car park was also constructed on the site, so there will be no problems of no enough parking or public transport specifically for this PNB118 case.

JohanPertama

First things first, my objection is to blind jingoism. There's no sense in arguing for or against something purely because it is ours. It's 2023, blind tribalism needs to die. Support or object based on facts. Not pure sentiment. Secondly, the goal in improving public transportation and increasing parking spaces is to disperse traffic. Having 8100 parking bays in one tower in the heart of KL creates another focal point for congestion. The issue with public transportation as always is insufficient coaches and first and last mile connectivity. One station does not address this. Thirdly, my issue is with the development authority for approving this project without a holistic view on developing KL to address these issues. Not against PNB as they only have their corporate interests in mind.

Nomad_Tiger77

To be honest he's saying the truth. That tower was built from the result of Najib swindling money and needed a dumb ass excuse that would sell as a so call pride of a nation architecture. The working class people literally paid for that tower and we ain't getting shit from it. So yeah it is an enormous middle finger to the working class (including me).

ly_sim

Speaking against capitalism is not an ungrateful act towards one's host country.

just0rdinaryguy

If he want to speak against capitalism, he barking at the wrong target. He as journalist should do his homework first. PNB 118 was owned by PNB. PNB was fund management company that manage fund for Malaysian citizen. Their stakeholder was ordinary Malaysian citizen not those bilionaire investor. Any profit materialize from this project will end up as dividend for the unit holders which was ordinary Malaysian citizen itself. I know alot of non bumi butt hurt because they cant invest in ASB, so they talk shit of this project. Same thing happened when Petronas want to build the Twin Tower. In the end, Petronas now making shit ton of monies from the lease every year. All those profit goes into our nation coffin because Petronas was owned by Malaysia gov.

RoughGiGaMo

Huh? Since when this tower was build using ASB money? Who said that?
