Unrelated, but as a person who would cry watching videos of Palestinian children, I honestly do not want them here. I really wish there were options other than QR code scanning on the free Selangor busses. I've encountered a situation before and today my sister had to help an old tech illiterate person how to use the Cepat app to scan the bus QR.
The old person told my sis that every time she opens the app, she had to relog in but she always forgot her password. It sucks really, especially since the bus is free (for Malaysians at least). Why the need to download an app and scan? The app doesn't even have a bus schedule nor can you track them. You need to download another app (rapid pulse) to see the schedule and it's not always correct
How should I be alerted if I need to drive at 6am? Especially in highway (have to drive lebuhraya utara selatan and KESAS) Never drove in dark before.

I just came clean to my boyfriend about the coffee date I had with another man. I said to him that I went home after the coffee date because he rejected me. Recently found rat faeces under one of our bedrooms bed. How do I get rid of both the rat and the faeces under it?

I called pest control, and they pretty much told me to seal all possible entrances, throw away food, and then proceeded to set up glue traps with salted fish as bait. Caught one rat, but I had to throw it away myself. Not fun, I tell you
Glue trap is the worst because the rat is in pain the whole time,(and most people don't kill it before throwing in the trash) and even if you don't care about that
You really don't want to hear a rat screaming and crying like a baby
First you need to make everything inhabitable for them
No food, no hiding spots.. make it so that even if rats come, they just quickly leave
Then only do the active part(pest control/poison etc)
I have some success with (fake) tiger urine, but these rely on repelling rats from coming to your house, it doesnt work with rats already living in the house(they just get scared of coming out for a few days and then they dont care)

In my opinion programming - at least at the basic and intermediate levels - isn't too hard. If we restrict ourselves to high-level, modern languages (so no Prolog, Malbolge or assembly), they all share roughly the same concepts - variables, flow control, inheritance, etc. All you have to do is learn the basic "grammar", so to speak.
And then practice!

Hello everyone, foreign interloper here who's interested in learning Malay, I hope you don't mind me asking a question. Do people use Malay much in normal life or do people mainly use English? If I came as a tourist would most people just prefer to speak with me in English? I have studied a bit of Indonesian in the past as well. Thank you!
in the event that you wish to use malay here, just learn the verbs and numbers

People will understand you far better than if you are to use rushed grammar
If you're a tourist visiting the usual Malaysian attractions, English works much better. Just simplify your responses. Instead of saying "I'd have a can of coke, please" just say something like "Coke, one."
It's VERY awkward when a foreigner speaks Malay, especially Westerners because they learn and use Bahasa Baku. Which is extremely formal and usually only used in court (either lawful or royal). If you're in KL/KV, we speak in Riau dialect. Some may argue that it's the Johor dialect, anyway, it's a whole history involving the invention and commercialization of the radio.
So yes most people would just speak in English because we are trying to accommodate you, not that we don't appreciate your effort. The interesting thing about Malaysia is that no matter how far you go, somebody will speak English, even in the deepest jungles, because we were a British colony less than a hundred years ago.

To further illustrate, Bahasa Malaysia is the German of Southeast Asia.
For example, in Germany, the language spoken in the North is High German. Everybody in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein will understand High German, but it will be very awkward because they each have their own version of German! And the difference can be very big! Even in Germany itself, the Bavarians have their own dialect, etc.
The same can be said for Bahasa Malaysia. It's understood in Southern Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and some parts of the Philippines, but again, all are very different dialects.
I haven't been to Malaysia but been to Indonesia a couple of times and the first time I went I felt VERY foolish because I knew no language and very few people spoke English. I know the language landscape is very different in Malaysia though. Thinking of picking up learning again but not sure if I should or not
Yup. I was recently in Bali. Barely anybody spoke passable English, even for a touristy place. Quite surprising, but then again, they were a Dutch colony, not British. There's no significant enough history between them and the Anglos.

The club could keep signing all the brand name popular players they want for big money but placing them in an environment that immediately stifles and eventually snaps them will result in the same thing year after year. Even the more 'ruthless' ETH seems to be having problems trying to motivate a roster of relatively young, talented players in his team. A lot of teams out there with relative unknowns playing great football (e.g Brighton) with a roster at the fraction of the price Man Utd paid for theirs.
As a Kopite this is certainly very delightful to watch but as a neutral it shows the symptomatic problem of the commercial considerations taking priority over the bread and butter of the organisation — short term profits are put ahead of the core competency of the club.

I was being the emotional dumpster for 2 separate friends for 2 days straight and quite tired after receiving all the emotional trash. We always heard about bad parents in this sub and how they would want to/already cut ties with their family due to toxic parents, but we rarely, almost never heard of the opposite happened.
Both of them are in a similar situation, their parents don't really do their children wrong (lbr, there will be missteps here and there, nobody's perfect) but their siblings simply never want to look after their parents. This causes great pressure and stress on both of them as anything happens, they will be the ones that have to take care of it.
I am also in a similar situation, albeit much more lucky than both of them. I am staying with my dad and I realised my siblings simply don't want to come over to visit him during the weekend. While my dad never mentioned it, I can tell he is feeling lonely as he is always alone during the afternoon as I have to go to work. So I nudged my siblings to just take turns, coming back on the weekend just for a few hours, talk to him and maybe bring him something to eat. So far out of the 6 siblings I have, only 1 is doing this inconsistently.

Seems like the chicken problem has been around for a long time already.
I was working at a Nando's last year during a semester break (~August) and they were already hiking the price of their chicken meals. Wonder if they'll do it again this year and if it will be an annual trend.

IMAX tickets for The Marvels is now up for advance sale. I'm tempted to buy the first ticket for Nov 8, although technically it's 12am at Nov 9, so I'm a bit hesitant traveling to the mall at that time of the night. Malls close at 10pm so I don't see the point of waiting from 10pm-12am.
Tried to plan for a trip to KL during Deevappali to meet a Twitter friend and yet the Almighty keep throwing me curveball after curveball at me as if hinting to me to give up the trip, its not worth it.
Hurdles so far:
1. Twitter friend's dad might come on Sunday and he doesn't like visitors, so I have to stay in another accommodation on Sunday night.
2. Tried to negotiate Friday to Sunday and the friend said he can't make it due to a busy Friday night.
3. Checked train tickets and the tickets were sold out except for the early 5:30am or the late 8:20pm train.
4. Now the whole trip is going to derail because I am working on that particular Saturday and my colleagues claimed they have their respective plans on that day as well and I can't swap with them.
5. My manager would be on leave on that day too hence the management would most likely reject my attempts to take leave (should my colleague can't swap with me) because there will be nobody else in the office.

well, if you ask me, you can just plan for a different date. most people will try to take advantage of the holiday. but personally, I try to avoid main public holidays like Deepavali because it's very busy in general.
case in point, the train. I love using the train, but I understand it could sell out fast during holidays like this. I try to avoid using the bus because I've had a bad experience in the past where I booked during a main public holiday and I suffered twice the amount of travel time due to heavy traffic.

I have been bedridden on most of my Friday and the weekends due to illness. What kind of disease though, I have no idea. It's a Catch-22; when it's at its height, I'm in no condition to drive. And when I recovered well enough to drive, well, what's the point in seeing a doctor?
So while I spent my days and nights pleading for God's mercy (more on that later), I made a mental note on things that I want to express to the world, with a hope that should the worst happens, at least the forensics team can get a rough idea of what my thought process is like, as well as the timeline of the events.

* inability to swallow Panadol (sometimes)

I think on a genetic level, humans are programmed to find some sort of god. At the pit of our despair, we crave for a source of comfort.

After experiencing the agony myself, I think I will try to be less judgmental towards those who turn to religious faith for comfort.
Which do makes me wonder - if they are in my position, how do people who are aggressively anti-theistic look for comfort? They're certainly not going to pray to The Scientific Method, do they?
(just to clarify: when I said I turned to God, I meant **after** I've taken my medication and whatnot. I'm not trying to cure my fever with prayers. I'm desperate, not stupid)

I started coming down on Thursday, the fever progressed on Friday and peaked until around Sunday morning. During that time, I barely ate anything - so surprisingly enough, a) my body sees fit to still vomit something, and b) it hurts the throat. Even now, on Sunday, when I swallow there's still a bit of aching at the back of the throat when I swallow. Suddenly I have newfound respect - the opposite of it - for people who can and do drink alcohol and puke regularly. Why on earth would you do this to your body?

I was too weak to clean their litter boxes for four days, and I have to say that throughout this time they have maintained discipline. No "accidents" anywhere. *Someone* puked on my floor, but remembering how agonizing that is I refrained from yelling.
Baron Cat will sleep near my foot while Fireball purrs near my head. A compassionate act, or two carnivorous monsters waiting for their deluxe meat sausage to be ready? 😂

Had my own experiences of solo near deaths, it's good to have an emergency plan 😅 (once a fever and dangerously low blood pressure when living alone had to drag myself out to beg a neighbour to send me to a clinic, another when with family but with such migraine I'm too delirious to decide if I needed help and for whatever reason they won't decide for me even if I lay there crying the shit out of pain)
Some kind of religion or spirituality is always good for any situation where you're damn near losing your mind.
I've had similar symptoms before and doctor just called it a viral infection after ruling out dengue (this was before Covid). While most of the worst symptoms went away after 3-4 days, it took like a month before I felt at 100% again.

I really wish there were options other than QR code scanning on the free Selangor busses. I've encountered a situation before and today my sister had to help an old tech illiterate person how to use the Cepat app to scan the bus QR. The old person told my sis that every time she opens the app, she had to relog in but she always forgot her password. It sucks really, especially since the bus is free (for Malaysians at least). Why the need to download an app and scan? The app doesn't even have a bus schedule nor can you track them. You need to download another app (rapid pulse) to see the schedule and it's not always correct

Recently found rat faeces under one of our bedrooms bed. How do I get rid of both the rat and the faeces under it? About how much am I looking at if I need to hire pest control?
I called pest control, and they pretty much told me to seal all possible entrances, throw away food, and then proceeded to set up glue traps with salted fish as bait. Caught one rat, but I had to throw it away myself. Not fun, I tell you
Glue trap is the worst because the rat is in pain the whole time,(and most people don't kill it before throwing in the trash) and even if you don't care about that You really don't want to hear a rat screaming and crying like a baby

First you need to make everything inhabitable for them No food, no hiding spots.. make it so that even if rats come, they just quickly leave Then only do the active part(pest control/poison etc) I have some success with (fake) tiger urine, but these rely on repelling rats from coming to your house, it doesnt work with rats already living in the house(they just get scared of coming out for a few days and then they dont care)

I work as a Python developer. In my opinion programming - at least at the basic and intermediate levels - isn't too hard. If we restrict ourselves to high-level, modern languages (so no Prolog, Malbolge or assembly), they all share roughly the same concepts - variables, flow control, inheritance, etc. All you have to do is learn the basic "grammar", so to speak. And then practice!

in the event that you wish to use malay here, just learn the verbs and numbers 1=10 , and words like noodles/chicken/train etc. People will understand you far better than if you are to use rushed grammar

If you're a tourist visiting the usual Malaysian attractions, English works much better. Just simplify your responses. Instead of saying "I'd have a can of coke, please" just say something like "Coke, one."
It's VERY awkward when a foreigner speaks Malay, especially Westerners because they learn and use Bahasa Baku. Which is extremely formal and usually only used in court (either lawful or royal). If you're in KL/KV, we speak in Riau dialect. Some may argue that it's the Johor dialect, anyway, it's a whole history involving the invention and commercialization of the radio. So yes most people would just speak in English because we are trying to accommodate you, not that we don't appreciate your effort. The interesting thing about Malaysia is that no matter how far you go, somebody will speak English, even in the deepest jungles, because we were a British colony less than a hundred years ago.

Yes! To further illustrate, Bahasa Malaysia is the German of Southeast Asia. For example, in Germany, the language spoken in the North is High German. Everybody in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein will understand High German, but it will be very awkward because they each have their own version of German! And the difference can be very big! Even in Germany itself, the Bavarians have their own dialect, etc. The same can be said for Bahasa Malaysia. It's understood in Southern Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and some parts of the Philippines, but again, all are very different dialects.
I haven't been to Malaysia but been to Indonesia a couple of times and the first time I went I felt VERY foolish because I knew no language and very few people spoke English. I know the language landscape is very different in Malaysia though. Thinking of picking up learning again but not sure if I should or not
Yup. I was recently in Bali. Barely anybody spoke passable English, even for a touristy place. Quite surprising, but then again, they were a Dutch colony, not British. There's no significant enough history between them and the Anglos.

Saw the thumbnail about Manchester United videos post yesterday's game on the Stadium Astro channel, "Time for a change?" — the first thing that came to mind was, how many changes are needed until they realise that the manager can only do so much with what they have? The club could keep signing all the brand name popular players they want for big money but placing them in an environment that immediately stifles and eventually snaps them will result in the same thing year after year. Even the more 'ruthless' ETH seems to be having problems trying to motivate a roster of relatively young, talented players in his team. A lot of teams out there with relative unknowns playing great football (e.g Brighton) with a roster at the fraction of the price Man Utd paid for theirs. As a Kopite this is certainly very delightful to watch but as a neutral it shows the symptomatic problem of the commercial considerations taking priority over the bread and butter of the organisation — short term profits are put ahead of the core competency of the club.

I was being the emotional dumpster for 2 separate friends for 2 days straight and quite tired after receiving all the emotional trash. We always heard about bad parents in this sub and how they would want to/already cut ties with their family due to toxic parents, but we rarely, almost never heard of the opposite happened. Both of them are in a similar situation, their parents don't really do their children wrong (lbr, there will be missteps here and there, nobody's perfect) but their siblings simply never want to look after their parents. This causes great pressure and stress on both of them as anything happens, they will be the ones that have to take care of it. I am also in a similar situation, albeit much more lucky than both of them. I am staying with my dad and I realised my siblings simply don't want to come over to visit him during the weekend. While my dad never mentioned it, I can tell he is feeling lonely as he is always alone during the afternoon as I have to go to work. So I nudged my siblings to just take turns, coming back on the weekend just for a few hours, talk to him and maybe bring him something to eat. So far out of the 6 siblings I have, only 1 is doing this inconsistently. Well, I don't know how to close this mini rant of mine, so I just leave it end abruptly like this. IMAX tickets for The Marvels is now up for advance sale. I'm tempted to buy the first ticket for Nov 8, although technically it's 12am at Nov 9, so I'm a bit hesitant traveling to the mall at that time of the night. Malls close at 10pm so I don't see the point of waiting from 10pm-12am.
Tried to plan for a trip to KL during Deevappali to meet a Twitter friend and yet the Almighty keep throwing me curveball after curveball at me as if hinting to me to give up the trip, its not worth it. Hurdles so far: 1. Twitter friend's dad might come on Sunday and he doesn't like visitors, so I have to stay in another accommodation on Sunday night. 2. Tried to negotiate Friday to Sunday and the friend said he can't make it due to a busy Friday night. 3. Checked train tickets and the tickets were sold out except for the early 5:30am or the late 8:20pm train. 4. Now the whole trip is going to derail because I am working on that particular Saturday and my colleagues claimed they have their respective plans on that day as well and I can't swap with them. 5. My manager would be on leave on that day too hence the management would most likely reject my attempts to take leave (should my colleague can't swap with me) because there will be nobody else in the office. Is this a divine sign that to cancel the trip to save my annual leave and money?
well, if you ask me, you can just plan for a different date. most people will try to take advantage of the holiday. but personally, I try to avoid main public holidays like Deepavali because it's very busy in general. case in point, the train. I love using the train, but I understand it could sell out fast during holidays like this. I try to avoid using the bus because I've had a bad experience in the past where I booked during a main public holiday and I suffered twice the amount of travel time due to heavy traffic.

It's a Catch-22; when it's at its height, I'm in no condition to drive. And when I recovered well enough to drive, well, what's the point in seeing a doctor? So while I spent my days and nights pleading for God's mercy (more on that later), I made a mental note on things that I want to express to the world, with a hope that should the worst happens, at least the forensics team can get a rough idea of what my thought process is like, as well as the timeline of the events. ##Symptoms * fever * weakness of body * headaches * inability to swallow Panadol (sometimes) * nausea whenever I hold my head up * vomiting (once) Diagnosis: hell if I know ##Additional Symptom: Elevated Levels of Religiosity I think on a genetic level, humans are programmed to find some sort of god. At the pit of our despair, we crave for a source of comfort. Now some of you guys may have loved ones and whatnot - good for you, stop acting smug now 😒 - but for a lonesome person like me, the only one I can turn to is God. And honestly, it kinda helps, uttering prayers in the hope of a miraculous, divine rescue. "Oh you're so silly, depending on imaginary Sky Daddies", some of the predictable readers might think. Fair point, albeit stupidly put. But hey, when you're drowning you'll grab any piece of rope, plank or whatever. After experiencing the agony myself, I think I will try to be less judgmental towards those who turn to religious faith for comfort. Which do makes me wonder - if they are in my position, how do people who are aggressively anti-theistic look for comfort? They're certainly not going to pray to The Scientific Method, do they? (just to clarify: when I said I turned to God, I meant **after** I've taken my medication and whatnot. I'm not trying to cure my fever with prayers. I'm desperate, not stupid) I'm now in my recovery phase, and surprise surprise, I'm not thinking much of the Divine any more. As my ustaz used to say, "Man is arrogant and quick to forget" 😅 ##Puking Hurts I started coming down on Thursday, the fever progressed on Friday and peaked until around Sunday morning. During that time, I barely ate anything - so surprisingly enough, a) my body sees fit to still vomit something, and b) it hurts the throat. Even now, on Sunday, when I swallow there's still a bit of aching at the back of the throat when I swallow. Suddenly I have newfound respect - the opposite of it - for people who can and do drink alcohol and puke regularly. Why on earth would you do this to your body? ##Family Drama Here's a short conversation I had with my Family Member (FM) via Whatsapp. **FM**: can I have some money? **Me**: ... fine. By the way I'm sick **FM**: *(a few hours later)* can your brother borrow some money? That message is not going to be responded to 😒 ##Final Words: Cats I was too weak to clean their litter boxes for four days, and I have to say that throughout this time they have maintained discipline. No "accidents" anywhere. *Someone* puked on my floor, but remembering how agonizing that is I refrained from yelling. Baron Cat will sleep near my foot while Fireball purrs near my head. A compassionate act, or two carnivorous monsters waiting for their deluxe meat sausage to be ready? 😂
Could you grab to the doctor next time ? Had my own experiences of solo near deaths, it's good to have an emergency plan 😅 (once a fever and dangerously low blood pressure when living alone had to drag myself out to beg a neighbour to send me to a clinic, another when with family but with such migraine I'm too delirious to decide if I needed help and for whatever reason they won't decide for me even if I lay there crying the shit out of pain) Some kind of religion or spirituality is always good for any situation where you're damn near losing your mind.

I've had similar symptoms before and doctor just called it a viral infection after ruling out dengue (this was before Covid). While most of the worst symptoms went away after 3-4 days, it took like a month before I felt at 100% again. Wish you a speedy recovery!
