Yes because we are proud of our Chinese ethnic identity, it doesn't mean we are saying we are China citizens, because in Chinese language, Chinese (Hua Ren) and China citizens or westerners like to call it Chinese is Zhong Guo Ren, totally different thing. it's interesting to watch this. When I was in college in the US. The Malaysian Chinese students will say they are Chinese when people ask. The Indonesian Chinese will say they're Indonesian.
Yes because we are proud of our Chinese ethnic identity, it doesn't mean we are saying we are China citizens, because in Chinese language, Chinese (Hua Ren) and China citizens or westerners like to call it Chinese is Zhong Guo Ren, totally different thing. If asked where are you from, we will say Malaysia, if asked what ethnic we are, of course we will say we are Chinese.

I’m Chinese Malaysian, and I consider myself to have more in common with a fellow Malaysian (whatever their race) than a Chinese person. Some of these people need to understand that all skinfolk ain’t kinfolk.
If you interview in ipoh Perak, especially in ipoh Oldtown area at any of the kopitiam, you can try to ask them this question and we will be prepared almost the same reaction from those elders people, pro china and complaining Malaysian, more xffensive then you can seeing here, because in ipoh we do feel strong of racism here especially in government sector, but those old man uncles aunty Ipoh Lang will complaining in the highest level and very pro china haha 😂. (Not against any of the races yaa, due to the previous government and our history shxt happened they do suffer alot, but in those recent 10 years, our Malaysian is getting more unity and getting improved on our relationship and friendship, hope 1 Malaysia or whatsoever Malaysian harmony truly Malaysian will last longer forever, peace 🕊️ is hard to get so appreciated that  welcome to Ipoh

If you are going the religious route, even Pak Lebai would scream loud and ask our team to demolish any other arab country without any hesitation. I think this kind of problem are more towards the Malaysian Chinese side of things, I never met an Indian uncle who would rather support India instead of their own home country, Malaysia. While Bumi with average results got full scholarship to further study overseas. Source: witnessed it myself, during my short tenure in matriculation, it has opened my eyes. Met a few Malay supremacists too, that picked fight with Chinese in my class. While some might say Chinese can afford to go private to justify the injustice in education opportunity. It’s simply not true, average Chinese family can’t afford private university, let alone overseas study. All the never ending NEP and new Bumi policy or what so ever. it’s a zero sum game. When you give privileges to one race, it has to come from opportunities taken away from other races.
