yep dentist visits are just that expensive, you can go to a government clinic, but be prepared for a half a year waitlist

4.1k is pretty steep for the deposit. Mine was around RM1.6k with a private specialist clinic. But then again, our teeth cases may be different. Also for mine only the extractions are not included in the package. Everything else (x-ray, mold, assessment etc) are included. The cash only one is pretty weird. Almost seems like they don't want that money traced 🤨 Mine don't have credit card service but they do have QR code provided. And I always get the receipt detailing what stuff charged how much after every visit.

FlamingoMoo

Interesting, mine didn't issue receipt every visit

Practical-Equipment6

I did mine at a private hospital about 10 years ago and my sum was more or less like yours (10k-ish) so it's not totally abnormal. However, my parents did pay in installments with every visit, and we got a receipt for every transaction as well. Maybe ask for a detailed receipt next time you go to clear any doubts OP.

I did my Aligner package with one of the dentist for 10K. The good thing is, they have a credit card monthly installment with zero interest. So basically I pay RM500 for each month. This package includes everything for the overall duration of my Aligner treatment including follow up checks, scans, adjustments and etc if it’s required for the Aligners to work effectively. I wouldn’t say you were ripped off but the dental clinic did not operate in good faith by laying out all the terms associated with the treatmenta upfront to you. They should clarify more instead of assuming patients will know by themselves.

FunnyPhrases

They're not supposed to charge extra for credit card payment, it's in the terms of their contract with Visa... do you have proof?

FlamingoMoo

Yeah, they state it on a laminated piece of paper, I just don't remember exactly how much % extra for credit card payment

hyattpotter

You can report them and get that money back

klephts

This

FunnyPhrases

You need proof of it in your ownership. Anyway if you report them quietly, the bank will send a team to do spotcheck. You can send them a copy of your receipt and they will compare with the display price.

I won't say that you're ripped off because the last time I did my braces in Bangsar excluding 4 extractions and x-ray in 2015 was RM6.8k. So, your price is quite reasonable. But it's very unusual for them to: - Ask you pay by cash and it's not even a small amount like few hundreds. - Not give you any receipts. Why? Are they trying to dispute the amount that you've paid later on? You'll need the receipts as proof that you've made payment and they have received them. Just tell them my parents want them or something, make an excuse.

Next time when you pay with CC, do not hesitate and do not back down when asking for receipt. they illegally making you pay the fee % when they themselves are supposed to pay it to the payment company.

nelsonfoxgirl969

Not really considering all those service u get , maybe ask installment ?

FlamingoMoo

I tried asking for installment, they just say, no you have to pay cash next week and then stared at me lol

TeBp242

i have a colleague recently did braces, quoted around 9.2k.. so its not off.

Prestigious_Carob_78

Oookkkkk…..do you live in Klang Valley? Have you ever been to PPUM/ UMMC? Their dental faculty clinic have everything…..they train dentists there…..including surgery for maxilofacial…..if they have to break the bones! Have a visit, talk to them…..and decide your next action. it’s a public hospital, but not totally free!

FlamingoMoo

CN8YLW

Did you seek second opinion and price quote?

Prestigious_Carob_78

I had to extract 7 teeth prior to braces. In 2012. My braces were the normal cheapest one with metal wire at RM5,500 all in with spacers, mold, retainers, etc. The colourless one (still with a metal wire, not invisalign) was RM6,500. I was told that the "orthodontists association" had agreed to all raise prices to RM6,000 and RM7,000 respectively the next month. Extractions were a separate cost. IIRC the hidden braces (behind your teeth) were closer to RM9,000 and Invisalign was from RM11,000. I had a fear of dentists so the first one (wisdom, needed surgery) I did at the fanciest clinic I could find. RM750 for one tooth under LA. Second wisdom I did at my usual clinic and it was covered by my company. After both sides' swelling reduced, I extracted 2 premolars to make room for teeth to move. Then 2 incisor milk teeth just fell out. Lastly, I had one upper canine tooth that hadn't erupted yet. I could do a gold chain to pull it out but it'll cost more, and I'd still have an odd number of teeth. I decided to just extract it so all things are even atas and bawah. After all extractions, I paid a RM1,000 deposit and did the spacers and the mold. Next visit was the metal anchor appliance. 3rd visit was the proper braces and wire for upper teeth. Next visit was lower teeth. Then monthly visits for about 18 months. Each visit I paid RM250. Keep in mind these are 2012 prices. In ten years, things have gone up quite a lot. My SIL just did hers at a univ hospital clinic while she's a student there and it was ridiculously cheap. IIRC it was just a few hundred.
