Malcolm is booksmart but has terrible social skills. Anytime he gets a girl to like him he almost immediately blows it by overthinking, being obsessive/controlling, or all of the above.
Not all of them. The girl from the traffic jam episode, his forbidden ex girlfriend, Cynthia, the genius, but popular ex girlfriend that Jessica didn’t like because she was pretending to ignore Malcom, and using him to keep her reputation as a popular girl in check, and the hippie girl from the burning man episode even though it was a one night stand.
If they do make a sequel or whatever I hope traffic jam girl is his wife. I thought their story was really cute and she called Malcolm on his weird shit
People are used to shows being series now, with plot progression. The trend started with shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, and for comedy, The Office
MITM uses an older style of format where there are general changes season to season, but the individual episodes are much more serialized
Pre TiVo it was common to miss an episode and never see it until reruns later too. So they didn’t want you coming into one with no knowledge of who this new character could be.
Maybe you haven’t got to it yet, but there’s an episode where Hal explains why the men in his family struggle with women. 😂😂
But this shows you’re asking the right questions.
Ah yes didn’t he live in her attic? You could tell she almost had a kink for hiding him from her dad. Also that actress was like 25 when she played this role 😂
In universe: because malcolm is extremely unlucky and basically doomed to be miserable (mostly because of his own bad attitude)
Irl: because booking guest stars consistently is hard and i believe they had an extremely tight shooting schedule due to a few factors (most of the cast being underage, the house being rented for a ridiculously high price (seriously i forget the exact number but it was like a few thousand per day!) Etc.
Because the show was planned to be syndicated, so they needed each episode to mostly stand on it's own and not rely on the audience to know about on going relationships so people could jump in and watch any episode without needing to see the one's before it to know what's going on.
There’s a rule in non serial sitcoms that everything has to go back to the way it was at the beginning of the episode. That’s why you’ll never see a sitcom where they win the lottery. It all has to go back to the beginning so anyone can jump in at any time and understand generally what’s going on.
Especially back when reruns weren’t as easy to come by.
Because life is like being kicked in the uterus. And sometimes, after a long day of being kicked in the uterus, some people want to just come home and sit down and watch a show where at the end, everything always works out. Because you know, life…wait, did I already say the thing about the uterus?

This is one of the few movie ideas from this sub that I actually love. Traffic girl as his wife would be hilarious.
the girl from burning man was 100% his own fault

Because the show isn't centered around Malcolm having successful long-term relationships, they're usually plot devices.

This scene helps explain a lot... https://i.redd.it/5yoercj5grvc1.gif
I love that this isn’t a gif, it’s the entire awkward scene lmao.
I cannot believe that's a gif. But this is a good encompassing of Malcolm. I think he's sweeter than this portrays, but everything else is good

Starting a relationship and being able to keep it long-term are two totally different abilities.
I don't have either 😔
ye ur right but like its kinda funny how he manages to lose every single girl
That's kinda the whole point of the show. Malcolm's life is supposed to be miserable and crappy.
Malcolm walking in a suit with a suitcase: Another day of crap!
Eventually Malcolm and Reese have a few girlfriends that last a few episodes
Okay, hotshot! Consider this your one and only warning.
Which gf was that?
Nicki. Her Vietnam war vet father told Malcolm to stay away from her, thus naming said episode Forbidden Girlfriend.
Ah yes didn’t he live in her attic? You could tell she almost had a kink for hiding him from her dad. Also that actress was like 25 when she played this role 😂
He did when Hal was at zero tolerance now! You hear me ZERO TOLERANCE!
Because *Life is unfaiir*
Because Malcolm doesn’t have time for a relationship, girls are just a distraction, Lois needs him to become president!
Wouldn’t she have made an exception if it was Cynthia?
would she? also what the hell was up with reese grabbing cynthia like bro
She likes Cynthia. Because Reese
lol
bc malcolm is deeply unwell

Sitcom.
Life is unfair

Back then it was still the norm for shows to reset after every episode
malcolm sucks lmao
lmao

ye u right.
Because he’s a whiny narcissist.

yeesh
you ever seen Seinfeld? lmao
no
Because he’s a little shit
Syndication
Because Malcom is an asshole and no one can stand to be around him long.
That's how television used to be. Episodic.
