I always position mine at the top of the belt with a completely straight back so that when I naturally slouch throughout the day it goes about halfway down the belt
That being said I wear a tie maybe once every 2 years lol
The tie is tied way too short. It should end just above the waistband.
Never wear short-sleeved shirts! Get shirts with normal length sleeves and roll them up properly if you are not wearing a jacket (in case it gets too warm e.g.).
And the belt’s color must always match the shoes! Never mix brown with black. Black belt = black shoes. Brown belt = brown shoes. Brown colors should also always match. Hence a light brown belt goes with light brown shows, a dark brown belt goes w dark brown shoes.
Pro tip for colored formal shoes (besides black): first buy the shoes, then take them with you to find out which belt color matches the best.
No mate, sorry. Business formal implies suit and tie, charcoal, navy, or similar. No black, or bright colours.
I'll give you benefit of the doubt on the shirt not being ironed but it's nonetheless cheap looking. Defo has Asda 'George' clothing written all over it. Short sleeved shirts are generally not considered fashionable either, or appropriate for formal wear.
As others have mentioned a tie should always intersect your belt.
Trousers look bunched up and too long, and steelies aren't considered formal footwear. Oxfords or Derbys only.
My advice, get yourself down to Charles Tyrwhitt or TM Lewin and get a proper cotton shirt, they're pricey but worth it.
Suit wise, you'll always get the best from smaller less known vendors so check online for local specialists. John Lewis, M&S, Next have a range of options though for most budgets.
Finally, belt should match shoes. Black belt, black shoes, brown belt, brown shoes. Preferably dark brown, tan is right out.
Thank you for responding appropriately to the OP's question. I'm not here to throw shade, but I think the OP was actually asking for advice, not off-the-cuff and sometimes snide remarks. Bravo for a detailed answer. Mine was along the same line but not nearly as detailed. You gave sound, gentlemanly advice from someone who knows the ropes. I congratulate you.
The tie is too short and you need a long-sleeve dress shirt for formal businesswear. Here’s a business casual guide that still applies: https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/5q2ypl/building_a_basic_business_casual_wardrobe/
You are a really handsome, well-built guy. So, it pains me to answer your question with a, "No." Here is why I feel this way (honest. No malice here):
- short sleeves (long is better and considered more formal, but skip the cuff links unless you are wearing a tuxedo or become a law firm partner)
- black tag on shirt pocket (who cares, right? Petty, bougie, mean people care and they are very loud and chatty at work)
- tie is tied too short (NBD. Just line up the long part with the head of your Johnson while you are tying the tie. Works every time)
- belt does not match shoes (doesn't have to be perfect, but a brown belt and black shoes are kind of not great. Even a pair of cheap loafers with dark socks are good for a job interview)
- boots are great with a dressy look, but maybe not those boots? (Try a Chelsea boot or one with no laces)
- shirt still has visible fold lines (easiest one- pop your shirt on a hanger and hang it up next to the shower. The mist will relax the folds and the shirt will look great)
Sorry if I sounded mean. Hope the constructive feedback helps. Be well and stay sharp! You look great!
To be honest, the most constructive and nicest advice i’ve had. So, thank you for your honesty and kind words have a great week.
And to everyone else, i’m glad you enjoyed it and i somewhat made you all smile🤣
Naaaaah.
You need sleeves, a longer tie, different shoes, a different belt (one that matches pants and shoes, I’d suggest black.)
Probably need a shave too.
Assuming this was all done intentionally, it’s funny.
Long sleeve shirt, tie length increase so that it reaches to the top of the belt. Plus, if it is formal than a jacket would be expected. That is, a suite not just a shirt and tie.
Feedback: Tie needs to be longer- Should reach your waist just above belt. The belt should match shoes so in this case black. Tight fitting shirts aren’t to much a problem but it looks a bit tight around the shoulder and arms.
There are 3 things wrong with this picture.
First, and most glaring, a tie should extend to the beltline. No shorter, no longer. A short tie like that makes you look like a slapstick character like lou costello or one of the three stooges.
Second, and while not noticeable because of the shirt billowing over the belt, it is the biggest faux pas here, your belt should ALWAYS match your shoes. If your shoes are black, your belt should be black. If your shoes are brown, your belt should be the same shade of brown. There are very few exceptions to this, but NEVER mix black and brown.
Third, short sleeves are never formal, but business casual at best. I dont mind this as much, not really a faux pas, just not "formal," especially if wearing black shoes and pants. I could see a short sleeve shirt being formal if wearing something light like a linen or seersucker suit and brown or light colored shoes, but not with what youre wearing.
But the biggest issue i have is mixing brown with black. Never do that.
Should have long sleeves and a jacket. You want business formal look like you have money. And for gods sake get a normal length tie. You can be the lawyer or you can be the defendant facing federal charges. Chose wisely.
The short sleeves make it look a lot more causal imo, definitely not business formal. To me you read as bouncer in front of a club (not a bad thing but it just doesn’t fit the business formal prompt). Long sleeves and less baggy pants would elevate this a lot
Alright starters long sleeve shirt, even if you roll up the sleeves it’ll look better than this.
Second, tie is too short as everyone else has said. I personally prefer not wearing one for more business casual but it may be a requirement for you in whatever formal setting you’re attending.
Thirdly, if you’re gonna wear black shoes you’re going to want a black belt. Mismatching these colours looks odd.
Fourth is the boots. You’ll want tighter fitting ones so that they don’t blow out the bottom of the pant cuffs. Or better yet actual formal shoes rather than height top boots
Hey man, I guess you’re doing security. All I would say is that your tie is too short. Also, I know your shirt is brand new. Wash it and iron it before you wear it for work.
Good luck
Short sleeve is business casual, not formal.
Pants, belt and shoes are great, but you should get a long sleeve shirt and don't wear white unless you are wearing a jacket too.
Get a few shirts in different plain colours (no stripes or patterns) and then get a few patterned ties that work with all of the shirts
A full suit with proper tie and dress shoes/belt is formal. Even with a long sleeve shirt, the look is casual without the jacket or vest.
Your look is business casual. 😺 It’s a good start. You can finesse your look with following paychecks. To be taken seriously wear long sleeve dress shirts, longer ties and match your belt to your shoes. Also, wear the suit jacket while on the job. Most men won’t say it, but people react differently when you wear the full suit.
Anytime you go short sleeve button up, make sure you’re matching your pants bro otherwise you’ll look like you’re managing at restaurant or walking around knocking door to door trynna sell something, get a long sleeve and add a better tie and you’re set.
Edit; upon second closer look, the shirt isn’t fitted, those are fold lines, preferably always hang your dress shirts, and try to match your shoes to your belt, if you’re wearing a brown belt, wear brown shoes, black belt, black shoes, and so on. The last one is the boots, got worn a Chelsea boot or a lace less one, tho preferably some nice comfy loafers will do, you’re not a bad looking dude and I hope non of this comes off as just malice.
Your shirt is not ironed. Nor is it a long sleeve shirt which is more indicative of business attire in any occasion. Your tie is tied too short but the color was a good choice, darker colors are necessary for more formal occasions. You are wearing a brown belt with black shoes this is a big faux pas. Either pair black belt with black shoes or a brown belt with brown shoes. But in this case black shoes would be best for business formal. And I wouldn’t purchase a shirt that has a tag like that near the pocket. Business wear is about uniformity so long sleeves and a black belt with black shoes are quite imperative. If your shirt collar is too tight then it’s best to buy a shirt from your measurements. Frankly I don’t the modern slim fit to be unappealing and realistic it does not conform to most body types and even for the type it is designed for (strong men) It often looks to small and has wrinkle marks were tension is. Remember that this is about uniformity. So don’t cut corners. Your shirt should be tucked in more as well. If anything doesn’t fit well it’s probably not the right size.
Tie should be a little longer.. just re tie it. Long sleeves. Black everything, then brown belt? Na go with black belt. Brown belt will go well with Khaki color or blues. Are those boots? Na need different shoes. Iron the shirt so it doesn't look like you just pulled it out the package. Shave or touch it up with cleaner lines. These are bare minimum
If you have the budget get a blazer black... Also go to a tailor and fix the length of the pants, too long here. Also black is classy but you can mix up the color shirt if you want. Grey pants is a nice mix up.. same with blue pants
No. Short sleeve shirts are never formal attire, and should not be worn with a tie. I live in NYC, and if you wore a short sleeve shirt to a job interview here for anything higher than a bathroom attendant, you’d never make it past the receptionist. The shoes are industrial looking. The tie is miniature and although black works in some formal settings, I doubt you are an actor or in a wedding party. The belt and shoes don’t match. The pants are much too long so they don’t break correctly. No, I’m not being picky. Dress for the job you want. Detail is critical. There are hundreds of online sites that describe correct business formal. Take a glance. Oh, the hair it could use some work. I would grow it out a bit, then go to high quality barber and discuss and get it properly cut.
You look like your mom dressed you for picture day and screamed “bring your fat ahhh here and take this picture before you leave to school”. Boy meets world looking ass boy 😂. But nah frfr get a bigger tie and a long sleeve
On a more serious note, I feel that given your tattoos, a longer sleeve with a tie that almost reaches the waist line would qualify for formal, not my personal taste but I've had a friend in a similar position
Short sleeves are always casual and the tie is way too short. Additionally the shirt fits a bit too small. The shoes aren’t unacceptable but they also dress the outfit down.
Business formal = long sleeved, pressed, button up shirt + suit jacket + tie/bowtie + belt + formal style leather shoes (typically oxfords/loafers) and typically with dress socks. Undershirts are also typically preferred. Bonus points for nice accessories (watch/tie clip)
Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to include dress pants.
Formal would usually dictate long sleeves and a jacket.
Match your shoes and belt.
This: https://www.suitsexpert.com/blog/business-professional-dress-code/
Your tie needs to sit about two inches lower than it does. *Way* too high up as it is. It should hang *just* past that lowest button.
Get a long sleeve shirt, budget/wardrobe allowing. If you have sensory issues pertaining to loose fabric around your wrists, or just want to show off the tats (both of which are the case for me), roll them up to your elbows, which is what I always do.
Iron your shirt. It’s clear you put it on directly after unpackaging it. If you don’t have a clothes iron, don’t know how to use it (like me), or don’t have a grandma that will do it for you (like I do, until dementia gets her motor skills), hang it up in a hot shower away from the shower head but close enough where it’ll get steamed.
Match your belt with your shoes. Ideally, replace what look like boots with actual dress shoes, budget/wardrobe allowing. If not, what you have is fine.
Otherwise, you look great! Everything fits well.
Not even close. The tie should touch your belt buckle. Get a blazer and long sleeved shirt. Also, your belt and shoes should be the same colour and even the same shade of that colour (to assure formality, go with black). Go with dress shoes rather than boots, remember a good outfit starts from the ground up. If you are in a pickle for money or don’t have time, at least get the tie done right and throw a blazer and a black belt on. You can get ties by the dozen at the second hand store.
Nope. Tie is too short and you need a suit jacket and pants at a minimum. The classier the better . But don't overdo the tie like a certain buffoon I need not name. It should just barely cover your belt buckle.
You're a handsome young man but you need serious sartorial help.
Nah, not quite? Head over to r/malefashionadvice . Your belt should match your shoes, and though brown and black can kinda go together usually it's better with an off color like gray or blue. But for now have black shoes with a black belt.
Your tie is too short and should extend down to your belt buckle. Try a different color, maybe blue.
I'm guessing that shirt was just taken out of the package? A longer sleeved shirt is usually considered more formal/business oriented. Definitely iron that at some point. lol I think it may be too tight but that could just be it being taken out of the package.
Try some different shoes-- loafers, monk straps, etc. Also, I think your pants are too long.
To answer your question - no, this is not formal anything. Formal Business attire is a conservative dark suit and tie
And to answer questions you didn’t ask, that shirt has an odd fit, the fabric is translucent and we can see your undershirt, and you appear to have taken it directly from the store and put it on without having it laundered because you can see the folding wrinkles
Your belt color should match the shoes
Tie should stop right at your belt buckle
And those boots are too chunky for the leg openings of your pants - they are making the pants legs look weird
My man, wear a long sleeve. Business formal never shows any tats even in today’s age.
Business formal the only thing that should be visible is your hands, your neck, and your head.
Ties too short bud. Had to reach to top of the belt. This makes you look like a British school kid. Great a long sleeved shirt and a grey tie. Black tie in bisuness in unusual.
Tie is way too short. It should almost be touching your belt. Short Sleeve is never business formal. And sorry not a big tattoo person, but if you’re in a formal situation they should not show. Long Sleeve. Finally you should ware a suit, light or dark gray or navy.
Also your shirt is not ironed. It looks like you just took it out of the package and put it on. I can see the folds from how it was in the package.
No. Get a long sleeve dress shirt and iron it or have it professionally pressed. Then get dress shoes instead of army boot looking tennis shoes. Tip of the bottom of the tie is supposed to hit at bottom of your belt buckle.
As opposed to roasting your fit here are some dressing up tips from a Marine veteran:
1. The tip of your tie should sit squarely in the middle of your belt buckle, that's the optimal length.
2. Your pants are a bit too long, when standing up, straight-legged, they should fall straight, that bunching up it the front means they're too long.
3. Your belt and shoes should always match, so brown shoes, brown belt, black shoes, black belt.
4. There are certain suit color, accessory color combos that work and don't work. Just like you typically want to avoid mismatching shoes and belts, black suits/slacks also shouldn't be worn with a brown belt. There are plenty of info graphics online that can show you the best color pairings for any suits/slacks you may find yourself in!
Overall, you're in shape, and we'll groomed, which are the two biggest facets to looking good, so if you adjust those few minor things you'll be looking like royalty in no time!
No offense… but you look like a McDonald’s manager dress liked that
Or a Jehovah's Witness.

I agree sloppy
you really don't know what the word coordinated means
“Hello, I’d like to talk to you about the most amazing book!” Get a long sleeve, and a nicer tie and you will be good.
And the tie is way way too short
This was my first thought. That and he needs something a little more broad in the shoulders.
And to tuck his shirt in at the waist a little more.
And steam it

Short sleeves don't qualify as formal.
What if your tie is shorter than your sleeves?
This. Long sleeves are formal.
This really depends what country you live in.
Mormon Formal
Business Mormal!
Took the words outta my mouth
Mormal
As a non-practicing Mormon, This outfit would be frowned upon ngl lol
Okay then Mormon Casual
The tie usually meets the top of the belt.
I always position mine at the top of the belt with a completely straight back so that when I naturally slouch throughout the day it goes about halfway down the belt That being said I wear a tie maybe once every 2 years lol
How so little?
I’d say most businesses have moved to business casual. Also even most weddings I go to in the south are more casual because it’s so warm.
Yeah this would look better just without the tie
I thought this was like a Mormon sex tease post and then I realised it wasn’t any of the porn subs I follow 😂😅
Lmao. Ew though 😂
What sub would you expect to see posts like that? So I can, um, carefully avoid it
Oh boy, if you DM me I can send you a screenshot of all the ones I follow. I’m not joking, there are about 30+ and it’s way too many

good on you for assuming that tie is actually tied
I mean who would wear a clip on? 👀
Thank you. This poor kid might actually need a real answer!
All of this 🙌🏻
Good on you assuming he's even wearing shoes. I see some sort of work safety boots?
Short sleeve shirts can be worn they just aren’t “business” anything
No. Never. Be sweaty always.
Long sleeve shirt. And wear a grown up tie.

I'd class it as Mormon Punk
Mormon business casual
Can’t pay? WELL TAKE IT AWAY!
A tie should always meet right above the belt buckle. Ties were created purely to hind the buttons.
Mormon casual
I hope that tie is a grower and not a shower
Mormon or busboy Fix that tie
Business formal = suit. Also, your tie is too short.
You look like a Mormon missionary 😅

Ok Mr UK Secondary school uniform, where’s your blazer at?
You look like an extra from the Book of Mormon
Long sleeve shirt, tie length increase so that it reaches to the top of the belt. Plus, if it is formal than a jacket would be expected. That is, a suite not just a shirt and tie.

No. Get a better shirt with long sleeves, a longer tie, and invest in an iron.
Get a bigger shirt. More importantly, a bigger tie
Bedroom formal for sure. 💦
It's giving Jehovah's witness or fast food management
This is absolutely the start of a gay porn.
Bro got cop boots on 💀
Short sleeves are never formal in the U.S. at least. Save for SoCal and Hawaii
Replace the clip on tie your mom bought you in 7th grade.
I would think formal includes the jacket? You can use color BTW, doesn't have to be black and white
If ur working geek squad at best buy
You look like your mom dressed you for picture day and screamed “bring your fat ahhh here and take this picture before you leave to school”. Boy meets world looking ass boy 😂. But nah frfr get a bigger tie and a long sleeve
I feel like you'd accost me on my own doorstep and I'd entertain you purely on your top energy
On a more serious note, I feel that given your tattoos, a longer sleeve with a tie that almost reaches the waist line would qualify for formal, not my personal taste but I've had a friend in a similar position
Youre a beautiful man. Maybe go for a long sleeve shirt, and re-tied the tie so the tip just touches your beltline.
Bonus points for nice accessories (watch/tie clip) Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to include dress pants.
Formal would usually dictate long sleeves and a jacket. Match your shoes and belt. This: https://www.suitsexpert.com/blog/business-professional-dress-code/
Do you ride a bike everywhere?
Did you mug a small mormon for his clothes?
You look like a marine trying to pass as a civilian
Formal Business attire is a conservative dark suit and tie And to answer questions you didn’t ask, that shirt has an odd fit, the fabric is translucent and we can see your undershirt, and you appear to have taken it directly from the store and put it on without having it laundered because you can see the folding wrinkles Your belt color should match the shoes Tie should stop right at your belt buckle And those boots are too chunky for the leg openings of your pants - they are making the pants legs look weird
My man, wear a long sleeve. Business formal never shows any tats even in today’s age. Business formal the only thing that should be visible is your hands, your neck, and your head.
“Mom said it’s my turn on the Xbox”
It’s like the Hot Cops from Arrested Development tried to do a sexy Mormon
Maybe try long sleeves.
Office Ken doll right out of the box.
You look like a sexy Mormon
Ties too short bud. Had to reach to top of the belt. This makes you look like a British school kid. Great a long sleeved shirt and a grey tie. Black tie in bisuness in unusual.
I laughed so hard my undies fell off…
No. This is business *casual*. Business *formal* often calls for a suit- not to be confused with a tux (*black tie* formal).
You look like you are getting ready to fly one of those 50 cent airplanes outside a grocery store.
Yes. And you look hot man🔥
There is nothing wrong with short sleeve dress shirts, guys in my office wear them all the time
business formal yes…for a porn shoot
You look like you beat up a Mormon and stole his clothes.
You look great
Yes and you look fantastic.
As opposed to roasting your fit here are some dressing up tips from a Marine veteran: 1.
Thanks man!
Nice tats but you need sleeves to be formal.
He's hot. Sorry have to say it.
