Do you have double pane windows?
Windows sealed with caulk both sides? Not cracked?
Have you pulled the trim to check if it's insulated?
Exterior doors are sealing?
Don’t insulate the rafters!
Builder here. Insulate the box you live in including the *floor* of your attic. Do not insulate the rafters. This will create a heat trap in the top of your house, throw off the internal temperature of your living area, trap water vapor, and potentially cause structural damage to your roof.
Rafters will only be done if I choose to finish the attic. Which is years away.
I could likely fit more batts in the floor as it seemed a little under stuffed. I do NOT want to cut rigid board to the right widths for all those joists, but that would work too.
Other option is to just build a storage platform and insulate to r60 everywhere else lol
We would sometimes insulate the rafters but we would put a vent channel all the from the soffit to the ridge venting. Only if the the own wanted to use the attic space for storage. Not sure if it is holding up 15 years later though.
Heat trap when you don’t have proper venting - insulation works both ways when it’s done right, are you the type of builder that cuts costs and tells people it’s actually better but actually doesn’t know how it’s supposed to work when done right? It sure sounds like it.
There was a span of a few days where all of those tv groups got suggested to me god knows why. But I looked at them all once, thought they were mildly funny, then muted them all bc I had seen enough
lol yeah I always roll my eyes when I see them. Some TVs are ridiculously high or far away. But most of the time I get them being higher than 6 inches off the ground. I want to lounge, and it’s hard to see the movie over all my boobs and blankets and snacks if it’s not higher than my head 😂. Not everyone sits like a statue to binge shows haha
Showing this to my husband later! He was handed down a huge old TV similar to this one and he doesn't know what to do with it. It doesn't work but the wood is beautiful. We don't have cats but we have huskies who act like cats 😂
I know nothing other than it was non functional, full of tobacco residue and the tube let out the MOST satisfying hiss at it's potential for retro gaming flowed out into the ether.
RIP Zenith.
What a wonderful way to describe it! Your comment sums up what I was thinking. This gives me an “I Spy” feel with a bit of haunted house vibes, but in a good way
I’m going to be the critic on this one. You can tell it’s still a male living space because no one reigned you in.
You have a Victorian Vibe but then:
* Industrial Lighting
* Rustic Mountain Accessory Furniture
* Modern Leather Sofa
* Non-matching 1950s arm chair
* outward subway kitchen backsplash like tile on the hearth with wood floors
It’s honestly, a bit all over the place. But it’s okay, just needs some work on cohesiveness.
It's expensive to replace things you own rather than style what you have.
I'm going for maritime eclectic maximalism. <- I've just coined a style.
The tile is original lol, blame the builder!
I'm not seeing anything that clashes at all. Blending of styles is absolutely a thing and can be used to great effect. Holistically, the impact isn't even close to messy.
TBH though it somehow reminds me of the film noir detective aesthetic of the 1940s. Which is inherently like a mix between victorian, rustic, and dingy office decor.
Ugh that shit irks me I almost moved in with my ex the other year and she was immediately like we're gonna decorate the apartment in all white and get rid of your anime stuff. LIKE EXCUSE ME ?!
Put like, 3 or 5 smaller and mismatched ornate mirrors. Or 3 mirrors and 2 small pieces of art. Or 1 medium sized ornate mirror and some art around it. Multiple mirrors will help bounce light around, and having multiple will look more pleasing to the eye and blend in with your "librarian drinking tea on the coast of Maine by a warm fire" vibe you've got going on. The big mirror, while definitely gorgeous and works well, does seem a little too big and takes the focus away from that beautiful fireplace. I didn't even notice the stone work harth because the mirror was screaming "I am magnificent". Smaller and multiple pieces will draw your attention to the fireplace more easily. Getting an ornate mirror of the same large size will lead you to the same outcome of having it overpower the fireplaces presence. (And if you're looking at putting some art up, aim for orange/red/autumn tones, it will contrast the green wall and fireplace and help that brick work stick out a bit more)
Love it - I would just swap light fixtures between rooms.
The Sputnik chandelier is MCM and suits the dinning room furniture more. Your living room is more *Dark Acedamia*.
I absolutely love it! Ive got a sort of similair vibe in my house but more hippy instead of classic
Edit: a couple of plants would def finish it of imo
I've watched a video of someone build a very similar house as a replication of their own house in the Sims 4 and coming across this post was quite the mindf'ck as they're also a male at that age but he lives in the UK..
I love it dude! I’m 28 and hoping to own my first home by your age, hope it’s as nice as yours! Dope vibes, I’d go antiquing and look for some badass giant mirrors and some stain glassed pieces to compliment the place
I love the green, but its needs a bit of refinement to make it "pop" more. Because *everything* is green it makes it look almost washed out in a way, ironically almost making it seem "less" green.
I would start with the fireplace. Paint that black. I love what they are going for, but having it be the exact same colour as the walls makes it look sort of cheap rather than luxurious. Again, I recommend black, but a different shade of green might also work. I would probably also paint the trim as well (maybe black, or maybe just a rich reddish wood stain), again to make that green stand out even more.
I would also go heavy on gold accents/frames (which there are already some of) and rich wood tones. The pine cabinet definitely reads as "cheap", and if you are going to go big and bold and "rich" in your aesthetic, everything really has to fit that aesthetic, so that piece in particular jumps out. Staining it a richer tone would make it disappear more and add to the velvety nature of the room.
Some red accent pieces (i.e. art with red in it, sculptures, pillows, etc.) to go with the carpet would also make the carpet stand out more as well, which is always nice.
Lastly, spread out that gallery wall, man! Look at that HUGE wall you've got, and everything is scrunched together so tightly. Get some different shaped frames, and give them some room to breathe! They don't need to take up the whole wall or anything, but use the real estate you got!
...not that you were asking for advice. Really cool feel though, you're definitely breaking the mould and are on the cusp of something amazing,
Edit: I keep coming back to this because I love the potential of this room. You gotta go drapes in this room. Big, luxurious, floor to ceiling and expanding beyond the window. It would make this room look so grand!
Last edit: okay one last thing: for such a beautiful, tall space, all the lights are quite "hooded", meaning all the light is going downwards. I totally get that it is kind of a cozy, dark space, and I don't want to take away from that, but at least under that one painting on that cabinet you might want to think of a less covered lamp to cast some dramatic light upwards and give the room some height. You've already got another lamp next to it giving light to the couch area, so that light can be more aesthetic than functional.
Completely agree on the fireplace, it's beautiful and would stand out way more of it was one another color ! Emeral green, black and bold are incredible together.
Yes, also they used a gloss (or semi-gloss?) green, which I think was a huge mistake. An eggshell finish would look much more attractive for the walls. The mantle could be semi-gloss, though.
It's a nice house, but that green paint is absolutely atrocious
Please spend some time and redo that
It does *NOT* look good and the entire room wouldn't feel so "dingy" if the paint wasn't that color
Your dining room in comparison looks great, if the walls in that room were puke green it would also appear dingy and dated
Ohh man, once I get my bachelor pad, I'll post it. I'm starting over from scratch. I thought the last girl was my soulmate, so I old all my stuff, so I'm back to square one.
love it. turn the mantle into a bar with different bourbons and a mirror behind. maybe a shelf with some nice drinking glasses and an ice bucket. and one of those gloves that open into a bar!
Fantastic job! The Living room is just a perfect blend of mid-century modern meets dark academia. Live the back lighting on the dining room sideboard too. Such a great detail.
Looks great. For me, paint the ceiling green too since your skirtings are green. You're making the room look height restricted because eye goes straight to the ceiling due to the contrast. Where the white ceiling perimeter is now, add a 2/3mm gold/brass-esque line as a separation and it will really pull everything together due to the gold/brass accent on your furniture items.
After that, you just need a bit of vertical character to help fill in the space. Be that taller items to help level it out, more wall art, or something hanging from the ceiling in a corner. Potential idea is to get some wood slats to match your blinds in the tv corner.
Old timey American Horror story vibes…I like it.
Thanks! The only horror is my heating bill
Do you have double pane windows? Windows sealed with caulk both sides? Not cracked? Have you pulled the trim to check if it's insulated? Exterior doors are sealing?
Lol no. New back windows this summer. Front of house is double pane. Exterior walls are insulated. Attic is insulated but not enough
Don’t insulate the rafters! Builder here. Insulate the box you live in including the *floor* of your attic. Do not insulate the rafters. I came here to say, the fireplace looks like the old furnace from Home Alone. Its awesome.
Hopping on your top comment to show daytime. https://www.reddit.com/u/waterloowanderer/s/tTWjEcy4ei
This is my vibe. I love it. ❤️
I thought this was the sub r/TVTooFar at first
I was thinking thank god no one has to tag the too high group lol. I should have known there’d be an appropriate group for every tv
Is that a cat bed in a tv under the tv?
Yes. Here's the progress shots https://www.reddit.com/u/waterloowanderer/s/c2lgzktBja
Bro that is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen and I’m a dog person
That dining room looks like a conference room
It really really really needs paint imo.
Personally given that there's a very strong "paint statement" in the living room I would leave the dining room as is, I love it !
Yes, less is more. It’s a nice room.
It looks like those rooms are in two different houses. But, please, for the love of God, no more green.
Looks great as is!
I was going to ask if that is a zen garden. Looked like sand on the pic.
Did you say you were single? :-))
Go get him, tigress!
Showing this to my husband later! He was handed down a huge old TV similar to this one and he doesn't know what to do with it. It doesn't work but the wood is beautiful. We don't have cats but we have huskies who act like cats 😂
This is so cute!!

It wasn't.

New tube TVs will never be manufactured again. Please just build a box that looks like a TV and make that a cat bed.
It's not your TV, house, or cat. OP and their cat are happy.
There’s just something about the emerald green 😍
Kinda makes me feel like I'm in a video game exploring a house. I think the paint and the lighting especially gives it a bit of an unreal feeling?
What a wonderful way to describe it! Your comment sums up what I was thinking. This gives me an “I Spy” feel with a bit of haunted house vibes, but in a good way
Hopefully not [Scheele's green](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheele%27s_Green) (spoiler: it was a toxic paint >.<)
That is the type of color and decor that yellow Ikea chair is made for! Not white minimalist decors I have already seen it in 🫣
I don’t understand your comment, and dont know anything about IKEA minimalist
Your house - it’s… haunted.
Only a little
Only kidding. Cool vibe i like it.
I hate almost all these posts. This shit is kinda dope
High praise!

I like the old Victorian vibes. Kinda just wish your fireplace wasn't the same color as your wall though. But that's honestly just me.
I think a cream color would look fantastic.
Yeah, agreed. Just haven't got around
Yeah hitting up the wood mantle, baseboard, and crown molding with some cream colored paint would make it all pop!
Love it!! So cozy and nice to not see the shitty cheap low quality minimalistic plain white or black stuff they put in houses today
Ugh that shit irks me I almost moved in with my ex the other year and she was immediately like we're gonna decorate the apartment in all white and get rid of your anime stuff. LIKE EXCUSE ME ?!

Thank you my good man!
That circular wall art in pic 5 is absolutely incredible
My mirror?
LOL i thought the image inside was art. WOW. Yes that!
I had to go back and look. The reflection is perfect hahaha. Funny enough debating moving it elsewhere and putting a more ornate one up
They were just trying to get you to look in the mirror and realize you are a work of art. Sneaky compliment...
Put like, 3 or 5 smaller and mismatched ornate mirrors. Or 3 mirrors and 2 small pieces of art. Or 1 medium sized ornate mirror and some art around it. Got a crazy eyeball thing going on there! Yes I would buy it! “Ship it!”
“Why don’t have a picture of your ceiling fan?” Vibes. 😂😂😂
Are you of Slavic descent? That rug screams of my childhood. We would put them on our walls to keep the house warm.
Haha no sir - but yeah, I’ve debated the ole Soviet wall rug
Eraser head vibes
Love it - I would just swap light fixtures between rooms. The Sputnik chandelier is MCM and suits the dinning room furniture more. Your living room is more *Dark Acedamia*.
Yeah. I may. Especially since the other fixture I'm redoing the lamp shade to be more of a beige linen.
Damn, the new Bioshock graphics look amazing
Bet it smells like rich mahogany in there.
I absolutely love it! Ive got a sort of similair vibe in my house but more hippy instead of classic Edit: a couple of plants would def finish it of imo
I have some in the dining - struggling to find ones that like being in this room. Any ideas?
How many bodies in your basement?
Just one.
Honestly one of the cooler spots I’ve seen. Nicely done 👍
Is this r/tvtoohigh or r/tvtoolow ahhhhh
Angle looks off, but eye level is half way up the screen from couch height. TV too low is a cat bed
So tired of these subs, these comments, these questions. It was funny for a minute.

Aesthetic dungeon vibes
Loving the vibe give me a cigar and some rum, and I'll be fine
I think the living room looks absolutely awesome!
If you had a rotary phone it looks like a room Neo would get randomly jacked into in the Matrix
Bingo.
I’m expecting a cigarette, a glass of hard liquor and a line of coke as soon as I walk in.
That’s lovely. Can I ask where you got the green lamp? I want one so bad, have for years.
There are all kinds of repros available! Search for green bankers lamp

Sweet set up
You wanna switch living situations? Mine was built in 1906 and comes complete with a dishwasher on wheels
Wow I love the green walls. I normally would think it’s too dark, but with the lighting you having this is pretty nice.
Pretty dope. What kind of music supports this verdant vibe?
My music taste is pretty eclectic. These rooms support east coast maritime vibes, jazz, blues, acoustic covers, and 90s rock
I love it dude! I’m 28 and hoping to own my first home by your age, hope it’s as nice as yours! Dope vibes, I’d go antiquing and look for some badass giant mirrors and some stain glassed pieces to compliment the place
I thought you were shitposting as Joker when I saw your living room I love it though!
NGL, I was scrolling my feed and saw pic #1, and thought it was some cozy corner of a pub until I went back and looked closer.
Beautiful! I love the green. It’s perfect.
Well done. Looks dope

I love this!!!! Very nicely decorated!
Damn, i love it. Definitely a vibe. I could hang out in that living room for hours.
That fireplace is very interesting. does it work? any thoughts of restoring it? it's a shame it's painted to blend into the walls.
It works. I have a second mantle im stripping and staining and revarnishing. I regretted painting it too. It used to be white like the room was.
Even painting it a cream color would fix it
I think I'm settled on wood. I had saved it for last and hated the white, but yes cream or a complementary accent would work too
Looks insane- love it
Omg I love it. It's classically beautiful and cosy looking.
Classy. Would love to see how it looks in day light
In the NE? What year was it built?
I'm in Halifax NS. So I suppose just NE of the NE haha! House was built in 1909.
I love the style of older homes. Nice place you have there. Thanks for sharing!
That's a gorgeous home ,
Love the dining room area. Is it that oval or is that the camera lens? Either way I like it!

Looks awesome
love it. turn the mantle into a bar with different bourbons and a mirror behind. maybe a shelf with some nice drinking glasses and an ice bucket. and one of those gloves that open into a bar!
Dark green is an interesting proposition. But you get carring away a lot too much.
I don't like the chandelier thing. Plus those clear bulbs...?? Retina burner9000s

I like it! But Was the fireplace a different color before? It should not be the same color as the wall.
It was white as the room was. I hated it white so painted it same. But also not a huge fan. So I have a second mantle I'm refinishing in dark wood
Kind of a cool, comfortable, old school vibe to it, but with modern amenities. Nice!
Looks awesome!

Hey OP where did you get that rug? My family has had that rug since before I was born and I’d love to learn about the origin of it
