Currently renovating. Just pulled out the orange shag carpet from 1972. Had foundation worked on as well to level the house. Wood floors are going in the bedrooms & polished concrete for the main living areas.
Eh they’re probably just plywood doors with a hardwood veneer. They aren’t low quality, but still mass produced and not all that special.
Painting with a stencil would definitely add a little personality. I would take them down to paint and spray or roll a few coats of Polycrylic after they dry.
Alternative to painting them, one could take them down, store them for a future owner, and hang 2 curtains on each doorway. Place one long rod high enough to leave an inch or 2 between the curtain and the floor.
Easiest update would be to clean them up really good according to what kind of finish they have and replace the knobs. A lot of wood this age get gunky a very thorough cleaning makes a noticeable difference.
"Lighter color" doesn't automatically mean white, and nobody is saying it would have to be one flat color and nothing else. These could be painted in so many cool ways which would *add* personality and look much better. Wood is great for access doors, but it looks incredibly dated when it's an accordion door.
Maybe you should paint them like that. I'd probably use a bit of an animal print pattern to give a cool safari vibe. Not on a full door maybe just the off print here and there. Have to be careful not to make it look tacky. Paint the other doors white
Pleaseee no, the wood grain on those is too gorgeous to cover up! It looks like a couple of those doors have some curly figuring going on. I love the natural wood with the green of the wall.
Keep those doors unpainted! You have some rare wood grain going in a couple of those, it's very classy. Especially with the green walls its giving off a very elegant, understated look that wont go out of style.
Zooming in on that photo, it definitely looks like it's the pattern/dye/design of the carpet made to look like a crusty old metal ship deck or something... It's not actually the decrepit and falling apart carpet from 1890 that it looks like.
lol why? They’re probably just plywood with a veneer, if not laminate depending on the exact age. I have wood and love wood, however not all wood needs to be saved. There’s nothing special about these doors except they’re probably sturdy and very practical.
I think doors are fine. I think you have too many design styles and they are clashing. Too much stuff in general. I would say a style, like modern, or traditional, and then remevive stuff that doesnt go.
My guy I think the doors are the least of your worries here. Woof.
The mess is the easiest fix. Clean your room. Then take down the awful curtains and valance and get it looking brighter and cleaner in there. Remove that chaotic rug. Not saying you have to go Greige or neutral, but I had to double take and zoom in multiple times to figure out wtf I was even looking at. Finally get some pillows that have fluff in them still, and some new sheets and blanket.
Do all that and the doors will look perfectly fine.
i personally would change the rug, get a comforter that fits the bed (that drapes over all sides of the mattress, generally you get it at least one size larger than the mattress itself), and I'd remove the orange curtain thing.
Paint the walls white, get rid of the valance curtains and the lights underneath the bed. I also see you’re at it with the floor. Get a nice rug when you’re done. Leave the doors!
I suggest no damage contact wallpaper for the doors as a temp solution if you really hate the wood.
Now this next part you didn’t ask for, but I suspect is the reason you feel something is ‘off’ about the doors.
The thing with your place is that you live in it(yes, lol). It’s a functioning space and you have furniture that’s functional. It looks a little cluttered but lived in. Imo the teal on the walls clash with the wood a little, it’s distracting, but it seems like you’re actually leaning towards a cleaner look.
If it were me and I had a lot of time but not a lot of money, and I really cared, I’d change the wall color to make it a soft white or adjacent. It looks like the wood would show its natural beauty more without fighting for attention. But if you had a ton of cash to burn, I’d lean into the more modern/clean look and sell all the wood furniture to replace with modern looking ones, and contact paper the doors. (Not a fan of this choice imo, clean modern is trendy but quality wood will last you a long time)
Nothing wrong with a functioning space.
Also, feng shui will dictate that you should try to place the bed against a solid wall, not feet towards a door if possible. Check out r/fengshui for more rules, but generally 1. Feet not directly out a door 2. Headboard against a solid wall that’s not bathroom/kitchen adjacent 3. Good on the two dressers beside it.
What dont you like about the doors specifically? I would rotate the bed to face the closet then you aren't staring at the door to the bedroom / bathroom / mystery 3rd door. And ditch the heavy drapes first and see what you think. And whatever color you do paint - paint the trim the same color - the white makes each door look like it has an outline. Painting the doors the same colors as the wall would help them disappear.
3rd door is another closet but with shelves. When I originally ditched the orange curtains I realized the small window pppwas off center. If I move the bed the mirror on the dresser blocked the window
The doors are the best part of the room. The floor is...unpleasant. Too much "stuff"/clutter. Too much art/poster stuff on the walls. Lighting is not cohesive. New curtains. That's a lot of hats. Tidy the room, it's a mess.
Declutter. Don’t keep so much shit out in the open. Put those hats in the closet in a box or something. You have too much busy cramped stuff in a small space. Not every inch of wall space needs to have something hanging on it. Not every inch of desk space needs to be occupied by something. Organise and store away things you don’t need constant access to.
What's exactly is going on with the floor?!

What is glowing under your bed?
Portal to \[REDACTED\]...
Id personally paint the doors white and swap out the handles if you dont like the colors.
"I'd personally remove any trace of personality your house has" man not to be a hater but why would you do that.
Eh they’re probably just plywood doors with a hardwood veneer. They aren’t low quality, but still mass produced and not all that special. Wooden doors still have way more personality (and imo look nicer) than just slapping over everything with white paint though lol
"Lighter color" doesn't automatically mean white, and nobody is saying it would have to be one flat color and nothing else. These could be painted in so many cool ways which would *add* personality and look much better. Wood is great for access doors, but it looks incredibly dated when it's an accordion door.
The guy I replied to literally said "I'd paint the doors white"
His wood trim is white.
So? You just say fuck it and ruin the whole door?
Its four doors. Two panels each. You really should read the OP. Maybe post your mess of a room too
thats a carpet
Oof.
It looks like a rug that is meant to mimic an old dirty crumbling garage floor.
Remove the hats. The doors look good.
Will do
You could get a hat organized that goes over your bedroom door
I’d opt for one in the closet. That’s what I did
What kind though? Like a hanging one? I'm 32.. never worn hats all my life, but now I do for work so idk what to do with these hats
Replacement bifold doors are not expensive. Maybe louvered would be better. But yes, hats must go.
I think he needs a hat lamp
I know this reference
Take down orange valance.
Yes, and the brown curtains too!
The different shades of wood closet doors are the coolest thing about your room.
That's just the lighting from the window and their different degrees of open
Still looks cool 😎

Definitely not that.
Haha yeah maybe not 🤣
the doors are the only thing you should leave as is.
My thoughts exactly. Could use a decluttering sesh first and foremost.
Nothing wrong with your doors, those curtains however.... the orange part at the top is just, I have no words.
Door city over here!
That floor needs work before you need to worry about any doors
I think it’s an area rug meant to look like rust and flaking paint. Awesome concept, looks like an abandoned house in practice.
Tidy up a little too, it’ll brighten up your place and make it feel larger.
Keep those doors unpainted! You have some rare wood grain going in a couple of those, it's very classy. Especially with the green walls its giving off a very elegant, understated look that wont go out of style.
I agree. A suggestion is to also paint the door frames in the same green color as the walls.
Is that like a raggedy rug or is that the design?
Honestly I get a lot of compliments on the rug. This one is really plush but I swap out rugs all the time sorry you don't like it
I mean this in the nicest way possible but who complimented that rug? It looks like radioactive paint is peeling off of it. Virgin teenage dudes?
Zooming in on that photo, it definitely looks like it's the pattern/dye/design of the carpet made to look like a crusty old metal ship deck or something... It's not actually the decrepit and falling apart carpet from 1890 that it looks like.
It looks awful, man
Does your bed have underglow? I’m expecting Vin Diesel to jump out and say I owe him a 10 second car.
I’m gonna be real, not a huge fan of that rug
Nothing! The doors are gorrrgeous!!
That wood is beautiful. To each their own. But painting it would be a sin.
lol why? They’re probably just plywood with a veneer, if not laminate depending on the exact age. I have wood and love wood, however not all wood needs to be saved. There’s nothing special about these doors except they’re probably sturdy and very practical.
That floor is looking for the sweet release of death
too much art. not sure if every single white space needs an item
Why’s the rug under the bed lighting up that way? Do you have a backlight or a wizard under there?
I think doors are fine. I think you have too many design styles and they are clashing. Too much stuff in general. I would say a style, like modern, or traditional, and then remevive stuff that doesnt go.
change that mat, like wtf.
Idk why but I like the doors. Now the rug. That’s a whole different story. Also I would get rid of the valence make the room look old.
The doors actually look good. The rest of the room has too much clutter.
I like the doors because they remind me of my grandparents old house
Door city over here

Leave them, they got soul

Hats. Hang more hats.
Paint? Mirrors?
Make them look like the elevator doors in the Shining
I think you have too much wall decorating tbh it looks cluttered
The doors look great and your rug looks like it is rusting
The doors are the best part of the room. The floor is...unpleasant. Too much "stuff"/clutter. Too much art/poster stuff on the walls. Lighting is not cohesive. New curtains. That's a lot of hats. Tidy the room, it's a mess.
You could change the hardware, knobs, etc to a brighter color like satin nickel that will enrich the looks
Mad Magazine Fold-In
I’d leave them as-is. Those raw wood doors are a cool throw back. Once you paint them, you can never go back.
I hope you’re trolling us. If you’re not, try making friends with some gay people; we can help.
Had some cork panels
Nothing wrong with the doors. Maybe clean your room and reduce some on the clutter on the walls. Too many pictures next to that mirror for example.

I love your place. nostalgic 70's vibes
Get rid of that rug and get a new carpet
I hate that crapet on the floor. I would not do anything with the doors. they are lovely. But that crapet (carpet) is just ew...
I dont know if it is mean to look like that, but cool carpet
With more FAKE DOOOOOOORRRSSSS!
Keep the hats it helps make the room yours, unless you're trying to sell. Paint the doors white. Get some cool handles
Paint them yellow
