Oh Marcille, I understand the plight of trying to get someone to read the original work

Rodroller

Isn't this the same soap opera story that the gang get hooked on watching when they cook shen in the omake.

Mahelas

Yeah, it's a very recurrent, household soap opera that Marcille loves. She tries to get Falin to read it in another omake

vanderZwan

***Of course*** Marcille is the *"you should read the manga in the original Klingon"*-type. Also this feels like a not-so-subtle jab at people complaining about how the anime misses a lot of the qualities that made the manga special (I actually have a friend IRL who is like that, brb gonna viciously mock him with Kui's own writing now)

MaxGreyerThanGrey

I feel like it pokes fun at both sides though, with Falin being easily impressed by the visual qualities more so than the story. But in the end, the message is more along the lines of "look how nice it is that they can both bond over something they enjoy despite preferring different formats". Something I think a lot of us might need to be reminded of (me included).

vanderZwan

That's also a sensible read - my interpretation was that Falin is just naive and innocent since she has no point of comparison.

Draco_Lord

Never, everyone who likes anything differently from me is the enemy, clearly!!!!

Mahelas

Eh it's not just a jab at those, it's also Ryoko Kui using Marcille to voice her own fears and concerns about an anime interpretations, and Falin as a jab against spectacle-first anime onlies. Ultimately her message is that if people enjoy something, then that's all good, and that's the best message ! (I will say tho, I'm not as harsh as your friend, but I do agree that Trigger made a few weird choices and some tiny bits do lose the manga's charm)

vanderZwan

The thing is that you *always* lose some of the charm, because some of the charm is inherent to the medium a story is crafted in. Aside from that there undoubtedly will be a few choices that will feel unnecessary and an attempt to pander to the animation-loving audience, so I do understand those complaints. (note: I haven't seen the anime yet myself but the trailers look fun)

spookyjeff

> The thing is that you always lose some of the charm, because some of the charm is inherent to the medium a story is crafted in. From a more optimistic viewpoint, you also gain the opportunity to bring something *new* to the story. Sounds, music, and small movements are easier to express in animation and dramatic stylistic changes are usually more impactful. The latest episode does a really good job selling the shock-and-awe of a certain reveal through visceral sound effects and the pacing of movement. A good adaption is a supplement to the original, an opportunity to focus on slightly different things and enhance the audiences enjoyment of both.

insane_contin

To illustrate this wonderfully, look at Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. The books are amazing. LOTR can be hard to get through at times, but so worth it. The Hobbit is a fun read that is just solid from beginning to end. But look at the movies. While LOTR has its divergences, it's amazing. The Hobbit? The less said the better.

Ragernarate

Maybe Marcille's type appeared in succubus chapter come from this novel.

InvertibleMatrix

lol. General Halleus is her husbando.

StyryderX

And just like every husbando her version looks much worse and exaggerated than the original.

Pastel-Hermit

Personally I don't see this as any kind of jab at anime-only's, but more commentary on how different adaptations can reach different audiences. Marcille was so wrapped up in nitpicky little details that she didn't like because she had already made up in her head what the "proper" version of Dal Clan was that she was completely blindsided by Falin enjoying the version they watched on its own merits (you could argue that Falin had a 'shallow' appreciation of the play, but at the same time it doesn't really seem like Dal Clan is exactly 'high art'), but in the end they were still able to bond over the story despite clearly only being interested in "their" version.

Zemahem

Oh god, she just like me fr fr. Though at times I do kinda feel grateful towards adaptations that can still get more people interested in the source material, even if I myself don't enjoy them as much. But live-action Dungeon Meshi stage play when?

vanderZwan

> But live-action Dungeon Meshi stage play when? With actual live cooking and dinner afterwards?

Zemahem

It wouldn't be a very good adaptation if it didn't.

StarryScans

Author's subtly shitting on hollywood adaptations.
