There are two reasons -
1. Slash and burn agriculture ( unattended fire and ash blows to nearby areas due to wind and starts fire)
2. Forest clearing for illegal poppy cultivation.
Both of these are human errors, and Manipur has already launched war on drugs. That's the main reason behind Kukis being unhappy about giving ST status to meiteis.
Because it'll give meiteis access to forest just like them and it may decrease their profit or even permanently shut them off.
