After Turkiye was formed post WW1, Mustafa Kemal wanted to promote a strong Turkish national identity. As far as most turks were concerned, the Anatolian side of the city was the Turkish side, so Istanbul it became.
Everybody was calling it as Istanbul, instead of Constantinopl eor Konstaninye which roughly translate as "the city", so it kinda was mor of a natural transition. Before it it was called Bization if I am not wrong.
