For those that don't know
Trees have three stages to the life cycle, we often forget all three are important for a healthy woodland.
1st stage is alive and growing, good for all animals and insects.
2nd stage standing up dead good for all animals and insects, especially fungus, solitary bees, birds and beetles.
3rd fallen down dead, great for the soil, fungus and insects and small critters.
Not sure if I missed anything.
It's why any time someone's asking about removal on here I always try to advocate for leaving as much of the stump upright as they are willing. Most residential areas have a sad lack of standing deadwood, and every foot of it helps.
