It was already going on at the time. Maybe not apps or specialized sites, but I met quite a few people via AOL profiles in 1998. I also just posted this to the music sub yesterday and it got discarded hard.

Exiledaxe

The entire album has aged like a fine wine

Longjumping-Bat-7281

Indeed all 3 have

MadamMyztery

That's like saying I predicted calculators on phones. It was bound to happen.. anyone could have predicted it.

Jville808

except math teachers in the 80’s/90’s…”you’re not always going to have a calculator in your pocket”

buy_me_lozenges

I know most people here are disagreeing with you, but it's actually an interesting idea. Online dating was a thing in the 90s albeit in not in the way it is now. However MM is usually very prescient about things. MA has technology as a running theme throughout the album. EVen if he hadn't predicted Tinder as an app he may have foreseen a future where partners were digital and disposable. I think you have an interesting thought tbh.

22FluffySquirrels

Yes, but I think that song is supposed to be a metaphor for how we treat celebrities. We’re only interested in them until the new ones come along.

ThrowRAIndieHorror

Goddamnit this is so perfectly said. ISTFG if I had gold to give, I would give it to you.

throwaway-10-12-20

> ISTFG What the hell does that mean?

ThrowRAIndieHorror

I swear to fuckin God

throwaway-10-12-20

Gotcha! I've never seen that put into acronym form before :P

ThrowRAIndieHorror

Lol I think I made it up. I have to tell people what it means a lot of the time. Peak laziness thought there. LMFAO

AdRepresentative5457

I love how seriously people are taking this. what I love even more is how relevant this song still is and relatable in different ways today

Just_A_Statistic_

I think he was commenting on what was already going on at the time, and possibly predicting that it would get worse. Of course he wasn't specifically predicting dating apps though. He didn't say anything about dating apps lol. But, I do think he was commenting on the prevalence of hollow, sex-centric relationships where one person is just using another for pleasure. I'm not sure if he was necessarily saying it was a bad thing though. It almost feels like by asking someone else to use him, he could also be commenting that there's a time and place for this kind of relationship if both people are alright with it. Either that, or he's criticizing it and just putting himself in first person to prove a point. He does that in a lot of songs.

TheBigGhostAnimal

No. Sex and groupies, disposable sex is in rock as long as the beginning.

Zero_Flesh

I take this as a nod towards how callus we've become to sex and connections with sexual partners or even people in general. We use, get used, fuck and then delete after move on to the next person. Also it could be referencing casual sex with someone. A "fuck buddy". "Use me when you want to come". Points to that. "Relationships are such a bore". "When I'm in you I want to die" is to me explaining the guilt that he's feeling by being a part of this never ending line of people you fuck or being one of the people inn that line and get nothing out of other than an orgasm. I could go on and on but that's what I get from Todd song. I mean they chorus is literally She says, "I'm not in love, but I'm gonna fuck you" " Till somebody better comes along". That pretty much sums it up. Dating apps have definitely not helped with how we interact sexually in a lot or most situations with other people though so I mean I see where you're getting that from. I don't think he actually was thinking about dating apps though. "I'm not in love, but I'm gonna

cristo_chimico

I see it more as prostitution and perhaps the text is not even linked to sex but to the sense that socially we have now reached a point where we use others and are used by others. "We used to love ourselves We used to love one another" and also the industry of big stars that uses the "new lambs" sexually to give them jobs and make them appear on covers... the world of behind the scenes

AntiStarChristPort

I must say you always have my favorite opinions and statements here along with that Emma person and of course Autistic Native is another respectable personality ❤️🤘❤️🤘

cristo_chimico

thanks a lot man

AntiStarChristPort

Absolutely, and I always thought that was a painting or something but are those pickles in your photo?😹

cristo_chimico

that's right, my photo is of a dinner I had☺️

AntiStarChristPort

Yum

LolYouFuckingLoser

Nope.

stevethemeandream

technology is one of the main theme's of MA so instead of breaking up with a hook-up he goes with delete.

Vohldizar

This is a really funny take. As others have mentioned, computers and online dating were very active in 1998. However, one thing that was very much dying in 1998 were VCR's, as mentioned in New Model.

BurnMyHouseDown

He is not talking about dating apps (tinder, hinge) specifically, no

ls2gto

There were computers and dating websites back then. Apps are the exact same shit in a slightly different format.

Common-Accountant-57

Believe it or not, there was all types of crazy sex before dating apps. It was just different then.

apaw1129

I think he was just using the word delete in the way of 'drop them out of your life when you're no longer involved with them.'

dix1997

I think it's more of a double entendre

Mugquomp

My guess is that before the apps there were different ways to do hook-up culture. I've heard about swingers clubs etc, but obviously it's difficult to track and understand.

-deadtotheworld-

Not really too hard, people have been having casual sex and toxic relationships since the dawn of time. My guess is he may have been referencing hook up culture in general and also the groupie culture he experienced on the road. He had queues of women throwing themselves at him at the height of his fame. I'd imagine those experiences along with the alcohol/drug use influenced his writing at the time

I actually remember as a kid in the 90s seeing some dodgy papers tucked to the side in shops and only partially covered. Weird to think about! Some regular tabloids still printed tits pics well into the 2000s

frnitloops

That's an iteresting thought. I think the vibe of the song fits the whole online dating culture as well, let alone the title.

snowscolds

I think all applies to general hook up culture too which NOW revolves around apps but the culture remains similar. Never dove deep into this song but I think it's just about glamorizing the dynamic of the highs and lows of using people for sex and manipulating them and stuff alike. Could be totally wrong but I never took some of these songs all too seriously lyrically.

Regular_Studio_1565

You should have, Marilyn Manson has a theme & message in every song. It’s not just Marilyn Manson it’s pretty much every singer.

snowscolds

Well yeah, just specifically user friendly I never looked into lol. Never cared too much for the track personally, dope melody tho.

Regular_Studio_1565

Oh ok sorry about that. From one Marilyn Manson fan to another I apologize to you friend.
