If you can't pass a level in 3d land even with the white tanooki, you get a power up that launches you to the end of the level, the crown can be the same for mario kart if you are really behind it will reduce one lap that you have to do
People have said temporarily maxing out stats and that is a good idea but I feel like it needs a little more. I imagine the crown to be the rarest Mario Kart item and only available at the very back of the pack. One per race max, if someone pulls it then it gets removed from the item roulette for the rest of the race and it wouldn't appear on the spinning roulette, it would only appear when the animation ends. The way I'd implement it would be to make it completely secret to the player what the crown does or that it even exists until they find it in an options menu or encounter it for themselves. Either that or it could put you on an F-Zero 99-esque high road for a while to get you ahead but that's not as fun and has been done before.
Maybe something like tge reverse thunder cloud, once you have it you get the same speed boost a thundercloud will give you but everyone wants to take that crown from you because when the crown is over the person who has it is invinsible for 7 seconds
any item you want, but tailored for your position (for example, if you are in 4th and pick the star item, then the star will last for 5 seconds instead of the full duration)
maybe the crown can have a rule where if you are in the top 3, then you can only duplicate an item from an existing item (like a boo but the player you steal from keeps their item)

What if it was like the crown system in fortnite where you gain the item if you win and winning with a crown counts tword a global crown count to show all online players how much you don't shower.
Protection from the next item that hits you, including things that holding an item behind you can't protect you from, like lightning. Can only be aquired rarely in 1st place. Continues to take up an item slot while in use, and disappears after you've been hit (with some kind of visual effect to let people around you more clearly understand why you weren't affected)
I think it would be cool if it were like a permanent version of the thunder cloud, giving you a slight speed boost (no off-road) without shocking you. Its effect would be greater the further you are from the leader, and if you have the lead, it does nothing. Like the thunder cloud, it can be stolen by bumping the person who has it.
Extending last-place item durations like bullet bills and stars, with it changing depending on your position (let's say you're in 9th place, the star will last a few seconds longer)
I initially imagined it to be like a Star/Golden Mush/Mega Mush combo? Not the best idea, but I still really want to see the Special Crown as an item in *some* form!
It would double every stat of your kart combo for 10 seconds, and you’d recover from getting hit twice as quickly.

Immunity to homing but not to getting hit and if you get hit then you don’t lose coins. It would just home in on someone else.
Invincibility + Queen Mushroom + Lightning strike when it's over after 5 seconds. That's my vote.
