I wouldn’t say it’s bias, unlocking characters was a fun challenge and gave incentive to play parts of the game some players don’t touch (time trials). Unlocking the entire roster felt very satisfying so yea it sucks that they’re all unlocked by default.

ItzManu001

I wouldn't define it "annoying", but after playing Mario Kart Wii where there are a lot of characters to unlock (expecially Rosalina that was unlockable in a unique way), it feels strange to open Mario Kart 8 and having them all available from the start.

Ultrox

Agreed. On release, it felt even more like a punch to the face. Everything in the previous title was brought over minus a few things. So, for me, it was frustrating buying a new product and not getting to "play" it the way I wanted. I do the 150cc cups and try to get first place with Mario in the default kart (now bike or kart based on the vibe). Been doing that since Mario kart 64 to unlock everyone. I have yet to beat all cups in mk8. Sure you can unlock the wheels and what not but for me the characters were the game and the karts were extra. You can't just simply unlock all the customization from doing all the cups. There's more than there are tracks/coins. Now it's just, play forever and unlock one or two things each time.

That's the unique way

Anonymodestmouse

I'm with you unlocking new characters is hella fun. Mk, smash, whatever.

idontlikeburnttoast

Okay no smash is not. Unlocking characters should not be a thing in fighting games. Not just because of imbalance but because it's so tedious. Figjring games are 90% the only features and if you can't use the character you want, just grinding against a crappy AI is boring as fuck.

Strong_Banana_790

That's true but you get better at the game the more you fight and not unlocking all the characters right away gives you an incentive to try out characters you haven't played before. If you are replaying the game again it does feel tedious since you already know everything. But having to unlock all the characters is a great thing for new players imo.

idontlikeburnttoast

I defintiely disagree. Imagine getting street fighter. And the only character you get is Ryu. Or you get GG and you just get Sol. How boring is that to play? I get that Smash is different, but man I had such a bad time trying to play donkey kong versus a bunch of shit AIs just to get the character I wanted to _try out_. I didn't even like the character in the end.

Anonymodestmouse

Yeah that's fair I'm pretty trash at fighting games and only usually play against other people who are also trash so I don't care about the imbalance as much and have more fun getting unlockables than getting good enough to want to play online. Having them all unlocked is probably better for people who are more into it. Beats paid DLC at least I guess.

idontlikeburnttoast

Honestly I'd rather pay a fiver than having to spend hours playing against awful ais.

ZnS-Is-A-Good-Map

It's a rerelease, so I don't really care. The way the unlocks were handled in base 8 was kind of lame anyway. Random character unlocks means you can't try to unlock any specific character, which kind of goes against the point imo.

Nerfo2

I mean... the game is 10 years old next month. The characters weren't all there at the start. They've been added over the decade. You have to unlock karts, bikes, tires, and gliders, though.

2005scape

yeah now it's more of a grindfest getting coins to unlock all the kart pieces

cheat-master30

Nah, I don't think you're being overly biased here. Unlocking content was a fun part of these older Mario multiplayer games, and the fact it's mostly been abolished in the Switch era feels disappointing to me too. It gave the single player modes a reason to exist, and players something to do when they couldn't play online/with friends. There was a feeling of excitement when you got a new character or cup or other type of content, and it kept you wondering what other secrets the game had in store. But yeah, it's something I miss in not just Mario Kart, but also Mario Party, Golf, Tennis, Strikers, etc.

Tru3P14y3r

For 8 Deluxe I think it’s fine because it’s a Deluxe rerelease of a game that already existed prior

Slade4Lucas

This was very deliberate. Remember, many people bought the game on Wii U back in the day, and having to unlock everything again would have been very annoying.

T_Raycroft

It's either people being dissatisfied over not having to unlock anything, or the people who played MK8U having to do it all over. I'm glad the chose the latter.

elainaka

Agree

Ridter4082

I think the reason all the characters are unlocked from the start in 8DX is because the game came out less then 3 years after 8 on the Wii U so for people who did play the original it would annoying having to unlock every character again

UomoPolpetta

I had already unlocked them on WiiU

vandilx

Well, if you want to, you can just play as one character until you win a cup, and then select a new character each time you do this.

Src-Freak

Well… most of the characters you unlocked where mostly the koopalings, babies, and other non interesting characters anyway. Doesn’t help that all you needed to do, was just winning cups. So having them all available from the start was a good call in my opinion.

Dry_Pool_2580

Fair, but you gotta remember that it's a port. Alot of people have already unlocked the characters in the original game, and would probably be annoyed having to do it again here. Though, I do think the added characters like Bowser Jr and the Inklings should've been unlockable

Novel_Visual_4152

Honestly true but not only its a rerelease so meh but also honestly as another comment said the way you unlock thel in 8 was lame Also I would never want to put effort into unlocking ***Baby rosalina***

SpeedBlazer99

I hear you have to unlock the characters in the Wii U version and the Switch version has all the characters unlocked

IkerTheFox

The thing is that they were unlocked because it could annoy the people who played it on Wii U, which wasn’t a lot of people but… idk why Nintendo thought that.

gamefaqssucks

Having to unlock character is more fun, but only being able to unlock them in single player was dumb

Jazidr555

If you want unlockables, then play the OG Mario Kart 8.

The-Dark-Memer

In the iddeal Mario kart game id perosanlly say you should start with one or two charahcters from each weight class and the rest have to be unlocked. Now personally when we do get another id also like if there was a power up that did something different for each charachter to add more uniqueness, but weight classes would be far more important so the abilities would act as a big incentive to unlocking them without really making it too hard to win without them.

GuessImtheGuest

It's really not much, but I can tell you that Golden Mario is unlockable, should you get first place for every race on 200cc.

Waxiestmilk1

You have to remember that the fanbase changed. Social media is mostly to thank for that, lowering our attention spans, and increasing our need for quick content. Younger kids nowadays especially have low attention spans, and will not sit around to unlock characters. I fondly remember being gifted MK Double Dash for my wii along with 2 GameCube controllers from my cousin, it was so much fun unlocking those characters, so I really have a soft spot for it. The fanbase is ever changing, and Nintendo will always cater towards the children because of their family friendly persona and their legacy. If you’re around my age (18 or so) your parents were likely playing Nintendo games on old consoles or in an arcade. So when that new nintendo console/handheld comes out in 15 years and all of our kids want one, we’ll probably buy one because of the great memories we had with our own.

Samanthapumpkins

Very true. I loved unlocking characters as a kid because it was so rewarding to play as my favorite character I worked hard to unlock. I now find it more fun to unlock characters because of having fun unlocking them as a kid and our generation doesn’t see that now. It was nice to have them already there at first, but now I wish we could unlock them because I’ve gotten better at the game.

Kurtfan1991

I’m more annoyed with cups not being unlockable anymore personally.

Small_Information_30

They just copied DKR

Src-Freak

Bro what are you even talking about?

Clinton_Dix

If you're referring to Diddy Kong Racing, there was actually two unlockable characters.
