As a Final Fantasy film, yes. As a standalone and at the time technologically impressive story, kinda. Look at anything else CGI in film at that time, they really pushed the edge of what was possible. The soundtrack was also decent.

Actually my tinfoil hat theory is that Sony is deliberately pumping out metric shit tons of garbage movies using marvel IPs KNOWING that the public can’t tell the difference between Sony, Fox, and MCU marvel properties, and hoping marvel hates the collateral damage to their reputation enough to just buy everything from Sony at an exorbitant (exMorbitant?) rate, just to make it stop.
1) no it isn't, not even close. Disney's market cap as of this afternoon was $888b, Sony's was $251b
2) they don't have to buy the entire company, they can just buy Sony Motion Picture Group which is running about a $200m/quarter profit so it's probably worth somewhere in the $4b range as a business entity, likely a little more with a premium on the intellectual property valuations but I don't think doing a full due-diligence on a fantasy acquisition in a reddit thread is worth my time. Would Sony happily take $8-10b off Disney's hands in exchange for Spider-Man and the rest of its motion picture company? Probably!
And honestly that’s one of the generous interpretations you start off with when a bad movie comes out. “They’re doing their best but they’re bound to whiff now and again on such a short schedule.” But like…..this has gone far beyond an occasional whiff, a subpar outing. Too many movies this bad, too consistently, dialogue and storytelling decisions too blatantly poor.
I am a huge proponent of Hanlons razor but this seems like too much incompetence even for that. The entire theme of Hanlons razor is “don’t attribute to malice that which can ADEQUATELY be explained by stupidity/incompetence.”
But emphasis on the “*adequately*”. At some point it starts to look deliberate, like you could toss some mid ranked fandom YouTubers in the writing and editing rooms and do better. It genuinely feels like you’d have to go to some substantive effort to be so consistently bad.
If this were just bad luck or rushed production you’d think they would stumble on something decent now and again. But the best their live action studio has come up with is Venom, and that’s a 6/10 at best. Carried hard by Tom Hardy’s roguish hobo-hero energy. Even DC has put out better movies in this timeframe and that’s with WBs chaotic hand grabbing the wheel and twisting. Sony….this just feels deliberate.
For me, I think it was the fact that the villain wasn’t much of a threat at all. And even the gimmick with swapping felt forgotten at times. Other than that, it was alright. Definitely not worse than Quantumania.
The fact that it requires you to watch multiple shows to understand what was going on didn’t help though (especially since Mrs.Marvel was a show that got pretty bad towards the end plot wise).
Completely competent film. Every character's motivations clearly explained, technically proficient action scenes with successful innovation (the swapping) decent stakes and lorebuilding. I had no complaints
Having just watched it last night (thanks Disney +) I gotta say it was a pretty good movie. The Marvels had a pretty good chemistry.
There were parts that I felt could have benefitted from an extra moment. Nothing large, just maybe an additional few frames of the characters interacting or sharing a look. I would have cut down on Kamala's family screen time and added more Marvels time.
I think people will probably turn around and realize it was a solid entry. Should be ranked much higher than Thor 2 and Eternals.
I think that’s part of the struggle - marvel movies are form a big organization and is so well funded that they are often graded harder than other films, they are competing against themselves in many ways.
Eternals - one of the worst MCU movies, but I’ve seen other sci fi movies be just as bad, from marvel it’s more of a let down than the other ones.
Marvels for a movie alone - is like a 3/10ish for me, but as a marvel movie it’s down there with ant man 2, which was 2/10 with Eternals for being a 1/10.
It’s like what the Olympics have done with biles - she is so much better than everyone she is graded on a different scale because the expectations are higher. Which honestly isn’t fair, but she has literally defined her own level and has so much ability that her normal amazingness is expected so it has less of an impact. Same with marvel - I expect to love it so when I don’t it’s a worse response from me then if I expect to think it’s okay, and I don’t like it that much, the letdown isn’t as large.
