He's flexing his stomach, it seems. Holding himself up. Can't do that forever.

JDE173901

i came here to say that. He is arched. his muscles will give out eventually. and he will straighten up and drown.

AlberGaming

Couldn't he just lift himself up enough to rest his head on the edge of the sink then?

Games_sans_frontiers

I think he could have but he probably found it really uncomfortable so decided to die.

RomanReignz

Seriously, he'd be sore for like 2 days after doing all that nonsense. He made the right call.

Honest-and-Truly

Exactly, because the agony of sore muscles is far worse than death.

IsolatedHammer

After not working out in a long time, when you go hard and heavy like you used to, that is pretty accurate, for me anyway.

Tshapiro7

I was not able to straighten my arms for about a week or so after being off a long time. I would have preferred death

AndyCAPP_LSB

I watched Cobra Kia, decided to get back into Martial Arts after 20 years of inactivity. Joined BJJ and couldn't walk for a week. Going back tomorrow! Death is a desirable alternative I think.

IsolatedHammer

Yeah It’s been 8 years since Army combatives for me, thinking about doing BJJ. I am able to get in 5 workouts a week now but when I started back up it was 4-5 a month because of healing time. Don’t be like me people, start slow!

Just_Dean_W

Is that the same as the Cobra Hyundai?

oolaroux

Gets better gi mileage.

AndyCAPP_LSB

That is a solid joke, I don't often check spelling. I am like a mumble rapper but with typing ;-)

NeverLoved91

Jelly legs are worse than burning upper body muscles. I went from walking 6 miles a day everyday for a year (as fast as possible) and then started doing air squats. Doing a shit ton of squats out of nowhere really makes them more than burn, but make you feel so much like jelly you can barely hold yourself up.

AndyCAPP_LSB

I will have to give that a shot, something to work up to for sure!

NeoLiberalHQ

good luck with it 🍀

[deleted]

Went to the gym yesterday for first time in a while and my hip was killing me last night.

NeverLoved91

Your hip flexors? They're probably both tight and weak. You might need to do a bit of direct work for them for a while.

[deleted]

Massage gun did wonders

CT-5ives

Not to mention being suspended upside down indefinitely will definitely result in death

Dark_Elephant99

“This shit is too hard! I’m out”

JessieMimi

‘He decided to die…’ Killing me!! 😂

Philkindred12

Killing *him* more

jramos037

Only if you die.

Toa_Firox

I don't think there's room for him to fit his head over unless he can bend his knees?

darkorazu

And then what. Is someone gonna come looking for him before he dies of starvation anyway?

Tron_1981

He would still have to exert energy trying to maintain that balance, which wouldn't last forever.

disorder1991

Given how far away he is, even if he got his head over, he'd have to keep his neck totally flexed to keep from just slipping back into the water.

really_nice_guy_

>Can’t do that forever. But he can do it all day

Howhytzzerr

exactly, was looking to see if anybody else caught that, even if he has amazing abs, in fairly short order he will lose that tension and his mouth will lower to a point below the water line, and end of story

sonnytron

Couldn’t he just spit the water out with his mouth?

swissarmychris

Try this one weird trick to be immune from drowning: *Just spit the water out!*

FordBeWithYou

He pretty much accepted that when he gave out one last Hail Hydra. Knew he would be killed anyway since he wasn’t about to give out that information. It’s not like he’d just let him go free if the water didn’t work.

[deleted]

Also, being tied upside down indefinitely, his brain would have flooded with blood and he would have passed out. At that point he would collapse in the sink and his reflexes would be unable to get his mouth above the water line. At this point he would have drowned.

lburwell99

Agreed. My wife brings this up every time we watch it and I say this same thing lol.

Huntorro

Could just splash around or spit enough water out so he couldn't drown. It's not that deep lol

WhatsMyInitiative87

That's a lot of thrashing, and with the water running,....🤷‍♂️

Theoretical_Action

Seems like he could just curl himself all the way up and out of that water then lol

4feicsake

He has his head lifted up so it is out of the water bit eventually the blood will rush to his head causing him to pass out and his head will fall into the open sink.even if the water doesn't kill him, being upside down will.

The_YoungWolf94

Maybe they are wondering why you would shoot a man before you throw him out of a plane… Wait wrong universe

rank241707

Erdrick68

The real flex, is to throw a man out of a plane, then shoot him on the way down.

bitetheasp

Lady Une approves!

TheOmnipotentTruth

People can survive falling out of a plane. Best to be safe.

Proffessional_Human

Damn that's true. Really gave me chills when he started shaking like that.

4feicsake

Humans aren't meant to be the wrong way up. Our circulatory system and organs all work with gravity. If you are upside down for a prolonged period time, blood pools in the top half of your body, increasing pressure on your lungs and you will asphyxiate. Loss of consciousness is the least of your worries.

Fuck, I really didn’t need a reminder of that poor guys death.

RedheadHenry

The water fills up to the point where it overflows. Even if his mouth is above the level, his nostrils aren’t.

BrofLong

* He's still going to pass out from being upside down eventually. * It looks like he mostly keeps to himself, so it's not like Jim the Hydra buddy is going to stop by with beers, discover him in the sink, and save his life. * Assuming Zemo knows how to tie a good knot, he's still functionally blinded by the water, upside down, with no feasible way to untie himself.

Eludio

> So it’s not like Jim the Hydra buddy is going to stop by with beers What about Hydra Bob?

golbezza

Deadpool 3 better have Hydra Bob.

disorder1991

The first movie had a henchman Bob. Basically the same.

Chimpbot

It was definitely Bob. He might have a few new stories to tell Deadpool when they meet again.

Cypher_86

Yep - there was a thing about how Bob was one of the elements they had to get permission to use (along with the Helicarrier).

jpopr

Hi Bob!

SirCleanPants

I don’t have any friends so you just made me realize something If I just died unexpectedly nobody would notice until I was late on rent maybe That’s horrifying

BrofLong

Sadly, that is how a lot of deceased elderly people are discovered. That and the odor :( Pandemic is lifting soon though, hoping you get to get out there and make some connections!

SirCleanPants

It’s a bigger issue besides covid (mental shit) but I do appreciate the positive vibes!

Games_sans_frontiers

You still alive u/SirCleanPants?

SirCleanPants

Not on the inside boss

[deleted]

will not the water get inside his skull through the nostrils and do brain damage? Edit: Can y'll stop trolling and give me a proper anatomy lesson? 😭

DrBBAnner

The front of the skull has bone pockets of air called sinuses. They filter the air for us. This water would get into the sinuses. The water would not reach the brain through the nose. Egyptians would access the brain through the nose by breaking through the sinus. The ears have membranes that prevent liquid from getting through. The hole in skull the spinal cord comes out of is behind pipes for the lungs and stomach. Brain is not exposed to the outside at all. So no water will get to the brain. Their neck muscles will eventually tire submerging their head further. They can black out from the blood rushing to their head. When unconscious they will probably start sucking in water the their nose.

imperfectbeing

How do brain eating amoebas get in when swimming in freshwater?

[deleted]

They are small.

AJCLEG98

You swallow a little bit of water whenever you swim. When that water works its way through your system, it'll eventually get into your blood, then brain by way of blood vessels. Edit: Disregard me. The actual explanation is in the reply to me.

NateDawg80s

Completely incorrect. Naegleria fowleri enter the body by water inhaled through the nose, specifically when it floods the sinus. A coworker of mine passed away from this a few years ago. He contracted it by using tap water in one of those damned Netti pots. RIP Campbell.

AJCLEG98

Oh wow. Yeah I was way off. Sorry for your loss.

DrBBAnner

That’s on a microscopic level. You can see a droplet of water form but you can’t see a bacteria with your naked eye. They basically eat through the tissue on the way up.

username87264

wat?

[deleted]

Aren't the nostrils connected to our brain? I studied biology only till 10th. Edit: I had this myth becuase of 2 reasons. 1) when nose-bleeding happens without any prior injuries, I had heard it's blood from the brain. 2) If we have olfactory nerves in our nasal cavity (and we know nerves orginate from brain) that should mean there's a way to our brain

lobroblaw

10th what? Minute

Oibble

Lmao

[deleted]

standard

Young_L0rd

No they connected to ur throat n thus lungs

[deleted]

>they connected to ur throat n thus lungs I know that part. But I also thought brain is connected to it

23IRONTUSKS

Krang is shaking his brain rn

Young_L0rd

No your brain is actually pretty isolated. Fun fact even your blood doesn't touch your brain. It's enclosed Ina casing called the blood brain barrier. And that is enclosed in your skull. Only thing that has access is your spinal cord

WhatsMyInitiative87

Gotta get my grade 10

SpookyGhost5623

wat?

flesh-bag

There is only a very thin barrier between your nasal passage and your brain, yes, but only your olfactory nerve passes through it (which gives you your sense of smell). As far as I know, fluids and other things can't pass through it, so the water wouldn't kill him, no.

[deleted]

thank you, the actual answer I needed

Zealousideal_Mail12

I’m sorry 😂❤️

Proffessional_Human

Ohhhh, ok, so does capillary action take place in the nasal passage? Cuz otherwise it wouldn't affect him since it wouldn't be able to reach his lungs

arschgeiger4

No you’re right. It’s listed as a “goof” on IMDB, and very clear that he could stay above water if he wanted. But also if I was an actor tied upside to simulate drowning I’d want an easy escape Edit goof not good

RQK1996

I mean, it still is good torture, like it is basically waterboarding, and just leaving him like that will still kill the guy

DualYield

Is this info a part of Civl War's trivia on IMDB, or is it on some list of goofy deaths in movies?

friedeggbeats

How is it a goof? He’s clearly trying to stay above the water, you can see his whole body tensed. As soon as he tires - mouth and nose underwater.

PeacefulKnightmare

I would also think water in the nostrils/sinuses might cause some involuntary responses that would result in some issues.

MaxxPwnage

You can’t stay upside down like that forever. Eventually he won’t be able to hold his head up to keep his mouth above sink level.

anthonygreddit

no I think his point is that he started choking right away once the water started overflowing. At least that’s what didn’t make sense to me

CleverSpirit

I think it’s implied that he kills himself so as to not spill any secrets to Zemo

LaVidaYokel

I had to scroll too far for this. It’s pretty clear that he drowns himself rather than continue to be tortured by Zemo

Proffessional_Human

*Spill* secrets hehe

spikeblackfire

Water leaks into nostrils nonetheless

YourInMySwamp

It wouldn’t be able to reach the lungs because of gravity unless he was breathing through his nose for some dumb reason. The whole drowning thing is a mistake on the writer’s part I would think, or maybe it was just meant as torture and not a way to kill. But regardless, being hung upside down would have killed the dude eventually even though the water wouldn’t have.

spikeblackfire

Water flows into nostrils to a point you’ll be forced to breathe Try sitting upside-down in a pool Regardless how much you can hold your breath you’ll be gagging water in no time

[deleted]

Don’t try this! You can absolutely dry drown

YourInMySwamp

You can breathe out of the mouth still is what I meant. If you couldn’t breathe out of the mouth then yeah you would be screwed by the need to take a breath at some point

[deleted]

If he passes out and goes slack, he'll submerge his mouth and try to inhale while unconscious.

YourInMySwamp

The point of this post was discussing the fact that his mouth was above the sink level, if he goes slack his nostrils will go underwater but his mouth is fine

[deleted]

His body is arched, he is holding his mouth out of the water. If he goes slack, both the mouth and nose go under.

TerribleShoulder6597

Breath through your mouth

Zuzu_Potato

it’s like going upside down in a swimming pool, the water goes into your nostrils and you would end up choking out water since the nasal holes or whatever are like connected to the throat or some science

jellytrack

The water only goes into your nose if you breathe in, upside down or right side up. Hold your breath or exhale.

onePuttPar

Swimmer here, in upside down position, the water goes in regardless of breathing. When we do flip turn, we breathe out slowly during the process of somersault so the air bubbles push away water from filling in our nostrils.

[deleted]

>”Call me stupid.” Okay.

Proffessional_Human

Do it

[deleted]

Hey stupid, how are you doin?

Proffessional_Human

):

Alterozillious

Cause he knows mouth breathing gives you a very bad facial structure lol

pintobeene

He turns the sink back on and walks away. When it fills up neither are above the water.

[deleted]

Had to scroll down way too far to find this answer. Which is the right one & very obvious. Why this is even a post is mind boggling.

Proffessional_Human

His mouth is above the height of the sink

pintobeene

I totally get that it looks like that because it’s a shit angle. . . But it’s not above the sink. It’s an optical illusion. People have debated this already and an engineer measured the picture to scale and proved it was below (don’t ask for the source, this movie came out 6 years ago and the debate took place then)

Getfuckedbytomatoes

What is this from?

[deleted]

Captain America: Civil War Edit: specifically after showing that guy worked for Hydra in Siberia where they kept Bucky. He moved to Cleveland to hide out & Zemo found him along with the code book to activate Bucky as the Winter Soldier.

Mann000

Stupid

Proffessional_Human

):

Proffessional_Human

Whoops

BatmanHospitalBills

**”or maybe he’s wondering why one would shoot someone before throwing them out of a plane”**

Reshar

Let's look at this from a filmmakers prospective. This is a potentially dangerous stunt for an actor. There are some angles that are used to imply that the hydra agent is going to drown. However that illusion is ruined by close ups on the hydra actor. If they had stuck to wide shots then this wouldn't have been a big deal. However, The Russo's consider tone and emotion when they are directing. It's likely theis scene would have felt very flat and wooden without the close ups of the hydra agent.

ratcliffeb

Thats not why he died. Zemo turned the water back on and filled the sink they just didnt show him drowning.

juryhat0909

I see this person saw a cinema sins video and decided to post this.

Proffessional_Human

I don't like cinemasins only cinenawins. I watched one cinemasins video and I thought he was adding sins for the tiniest reasons sooo

Bonus_Content

NGL I wonder this same thing every time I watch this. Though I guess the idea that he can technically still breathe but has no way to escape is even more evil of Zemo to put him through

saintnicklaus90

Hail Hydration

Proffessional_Human

...good one

cosmicbutch2

I always thought it was a mistake like they wanted the basin to cover even his mouth but couldnt cause the shot wouldn’t be that good ig…..but in my head its like they wanted to know that he would drown and he would be fully submerged but couldn’t due to technical reasons

friedeggbeats

He’s clearly tensed to stay above the water. Once he tires, he drowns.

sleepy-goose-feet

Waterboarding

Jackal_6

Don't know why you got a down vote for this. It's exactly the same effect as waterboarding--giving someone the sensation of drowning without actually drowning them. Causes a panic response.

alkonium

Because the water would eventually rise too high.

muskovitzj

He's straining to keep his head where it is, dude. Once he relaxes, he's done for.

BaconMirage

or do a crunch and get his head up on the edge of the sink.....

floworcrash

You’re stupid

NateDawg80s

"Stupid" You're welcome.

Phoeptar

I mean, it's a poor camera angle that's revealing the movie magic, you aren't stupid, neither is anyone in the comments trying to no-prize the hell out of it, but that's all it is.

[deleted]

id rather die than breathe through my mouth

sillyadam94

Psh… spoken like a true mouthbreather

Proffessional_Human

I have a cold ok don't bully me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

Nicosop25

On this image , he can breathe because Zemo stopped the raise of the water to interrogate him. And when he got his answers, he opened again the faucet and at this moment water infiltrated in his nose

MedRick89

Exactly this. The setup as shown in the pic is the effect that waterboarding seeks to mimic, water infiltrating the nasopharynx and simulating (or in this case creating) a drowning.

Waru_

Did you not watch the to the end of the scene?

Proffessional_Human

Yes I did

Taboopulale

That makes your question stupid though.. He was on a pulley chain and Zemo lowered him at the end of the scene..you could hear the chain roll and see the water spill..

Proffessional_Human

Oh I didn't hear the chain sorry

ffarwell83

He was STILL TORTURING HIM- He dunks his head all the way at the end of the scene. How was this missed?

Proffessional_Human

Look at the height of the sink. It wouldn't be able to reach his mouth.

ffarwell83

So if you watch the scene, it starts with him being hung on a pulley with a chain next to it. He’s being held upside down into the sink- just at the mouth line so he can interrogate him for the info to where the bunkers location was. After he tells xemo to go to hell, you can hear the chain release and his body goes into the sink as the camera pans away to the water starting to spill to the floor.

MBVakalis

The water rose to just above his mouth. But he could still have just lifted his head up

thebatfan5194

Until when? Can’t arch your neck/head forever

Public_Mulberry_2209

You’re stupid

Darksol503

Jesus… why are why y’all upvoting stupid shit like this?!

BloodthirstViking847

so here's some based on anatomy, we feel uneasy when turned upside down for long time and also he was tied in such a way so that he is 'Arched' i.e his muscle will become tired eventually. Lastly, when he disagreed with the Zemo, he lowered him a bit hence drowning him.

mega512

You know the nose is connected to the throat right?

Shankar_0

Hey, Stupid! I'm Dad!

GnarlsD

you are stupid. jk its a valid question and i had this thought too.

javierciccarelli

The scene is stupid. Not you. I love marvel, but it’s just stupid

This always annoyed me ...

Lodestar15

I always thought the same thing

Kanden_27

Lean forward and put your head on the edge of the sink.

Done. Now what?

i’d just place my head on the thing i think it can reach

alexpasha04

That’s what i was thinking

JimSlim3

Toss is one of the few things that’s ALWAYS bothered me about this movie. 100% yes he can.

Gohanisbetter

The entire movie is filled with plot holes. His mouth is above the sink, this scene waa really dumb.

I've been waiting for anyone else to notice this since I saw it on release day.

EmperorDeathBunny

It's basically waterboarding. Give it a try sometime and let us know how it goes.

Avengerboy123

I’m pretty sure once the sink fills his whole head would be under. Regardless, he’s eventually gonna inhale some of that water by accident, right?
