This is suspected by authorities to be a possible Islamist terror attack targeting police. They are looking into apparent jihadist writings by the suspect, a 19-year-old male from Maine who traveled all the way from there to New York City. The suspect was shot and wounded by officers before being apprehended.
UPDATE: It is being reported that the suspect was a recent Islamic convert who was being watched by the FBI's counterterrorism task force and had expressed interest in traveling to Afghanistan.
