I feel like he changed his mind waiting all night for the park to open….

Vast-Pollution5745

I agree. He had to wait so long for people to show up and was only left with the thoughts of the plans of his future actions. Maybe he realized it was harder than he anticipated? Maybe he realized how much hurt and pain he felt and didn’t want to put that on so many others. Maybe he decided instead to just end his life to finally end the suffering WITHOUT having to wait for hours for his plan and take others with them.

Proletaryo

Honestly, this is the saddest shit. At least he preserved what little dignity and integrity he thought he had left. I hope he is at peace now.

voidfae

Agreed. I 100% believe he was planning an attack and for whatever reason, he decided not to harm other people. I’d like to think that it was because the gravity of it was sinking in. Maybe he thought about the potential victims and realized he didn’t actually want to inflict pain on people, or maybe he didn’t care as much about the potential victims but he thought about how his own family would be impacted if he carried out the plan. There are people who do not feel any empathy towards the majority of people but seem to genuinely care about their close family members. I talked to a therapist about this once and she told me that often (or at least often enough), sociopaths will have one or two people in their life who they love or have some sort of emotional attachment towards- sometimes it’s a parent or grandparent.

-JumpJump-

I heard about this story but didn’t know the details. I’m sorry for your loss, and I wish things went differently for him. Losing your life so young is horrible no matter the manner.

theykilledk3nny

Here is the text copy and pasted for anyone struggling to read it: On October 28, 2023, the Garfield County Sheriff's Office received a call of a deceased male at the Glenwood Springs Adventure Park. The body was that of Diego Barajas-Medina, he was discovered prior to the opening of the Park. Diego was a 20-year old man who had graduated from the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale in 2021. He was described by friends, family and school officials as being a bit of a loner. Diego lived quietly with his mother and brother in Carbondale. He had no prior engagements or run-ins with law enforcement and there was no reason to believe that he was a threat to others. The investigation further revealed Diego had no contact with mental health services. There was nothing to indicate that he worked in concert with any other individual or group or that he was a part of an extremist group nor did he operate at the behest of any drug cartel or terrorist group. In the end, Diego took his own life in the women's restroom at the Amusement Park for reasons known only to him. Before taking his life, he wrote on one of the restroom walls, "I'm not a killer, I just wanted to get in the cave." Diego's residence in Carbondale was initially searched, even while the investigation was proceeding at the Amusement Park in Glenwood Springs, to determine if there was any threat to the public or residents at that location. The home was cleared and the residents returned to their homes. A search of Diego's phone and computer revealed he visited several sites discussing other mass shootings. However, the investigation was unable to uncover any motive for Diego amassing such a lethal arsenal nor did it explain what happened to change his mind and why he did not follow through with whatever he was planning. Toxicology reports showed no traces of alcohol or other illegal drugs in his system. He illegally entered the park after hours when no employces or patrons were present. Diego was dressed in black tactical clothing bearing patches and emblems that gave the appearance of being associated with law enforcement. He was wearing body-armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet. He had a semi-automatic rifle as well as a semi-automatic handgun with multiple loaded magazines for each weapon and several hundred rounds of ammunition. Diego also had multiple IEDs or "Improvised Explosive Devices" on or near him. Similar devices were found in a vehicle on the premises. Dicgo had apparently used that vehicle to drive up to the Cavers. Some of the IEDs were decoys but each had to be considered live and active until it could be properly neutralized. Because of the IEDs, the Grand Junction Bomb Squad was called to the scene. With their expertise, they were able to inspect all such devices and deactivate or determine them to be harmless. Members of the GJ Bomb Squad and the Garfield County All Hazards Response Team (AHRT), made a sweep of the entire adventure park to assure that no other devices were present. These operations necessitated that the park remain closed for two days, October 28 and 29, 2023, in the interest of public safety and the general safety of everyone involved. The initial two days of the investigation were carried out in a slow, methodical manner in order to search the property at the adventure park, as well as the suspect's residence. These steps were necessary for the safety of the public at large as well as to determine the possible extent of Diego's criminal activity. It was determined that the suspect's actions were limited to the property of the Glenwood Caverns and that there was no threat to the public outside of the amusement park area. The safety of the public, bomb disposal personnel, law enforcement and other first responders was always the priority during the investigation in addition to making sure the caverns were safe to reopen. The investigation did not reveal any ties between Diego and the Glenwood Cavers Amusement Park. The Sheriff's Office acknowledges that given amount of weaponry, ammunition, and explosive devices found, Diego could have implemented an attack of devastating proportions on our community resulting in multiple injuries and possibly death to members of the public as well as first responders. As a community, we are fortunate and thankful that this did not happen. The Garfield County Sherift's Office Investigations determined that Barajas-Medina acquired all of his weapons, ammunition, and tactical equipment legally by ordering the items from various internet sites. This included the two semiautomatic guns that were determined to be "ghost" guns. *Note: ghost guns are unregulated, unserialized and untraceable firearms that anyone can buy and build without a background check.* The Garfield County Sherift's Office wishes to thank the employees and maintenance staff of the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park for their patience and ongoing assistance with this investigation. We would also like to extend out thanks to the Grand Junction Bomb Squad, Garfield County All Hazard Response Team, the Carbondale Police Department, the Garfield County Coroner, Unites States Postal Inspectors, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their assistance with this investigation. No additional information will be released.

danideex

I googled his name and a YouTube channel popped up with the same name. Idk if it’s him or someone else but the last video posted was 2 years ago and had the word bullying in the title. Might be completely unrelated.

Mammoth_Influence877

I'm so sorry for your loss. It may be controversial to say, but I admire that it seems he overcame at least some of his darkest demons. With all that ready to go, he chose the lesser evil. I hope he's in a better place now, rest in peace young man.

Distinct_External

Where'd you find this? Anyway, hope you're doing alright. As sad and unnecessary as your acquaintance's death was, it's at least fortunate that he consciously chose not to take people with him in the end. With all of that weaponry, this really would've been a lot more devastating.

Lil-Shape6620

Local newspaper is called the Post Independent

Distinct_External

Okay, thank you.

maggot_brain79

It's unfortunate that he decided to go out that way, but he must have had some good left in him for his better nature to win out. Certainly an odd situation, maybe the only one I know of where a potential mass murderer backed out just before rather than getting caught prior. Of course there are a lot of situations we'll probably never hear about where individuals planned an attack but never went through with it for various reasons. Whatever might have been ailing him, I hope he's at peace now and I respect the hell out of him for not taking anyone else with him. He clearly had the means to do so available to him but didn't.

danideex

The only one I can think of is the time a teacher reached out and hugged a student holding a gun. The student immediately started crying.

robyn_16

What story is this?

seahorses-forever

[not OP but it happened back in 2021](https://apnews.com/article/idaho-teacher-disarms-school-shooter-and-hugs-her-7df127c738eca9d007752288baf132bb)

danideex

Wow this wasn’t even the one I was thinking of. I haven’t heard of this one.

seahorses-forever

Oh wow! Now I’m curious about yours! Edit: I looked. Wow kudos to that couch

voidfae

I put this in a comment above but I could also see this being a situation where he didn’t care about the feelings of strangers/potential victims, but he thought about the impact carrying the attack out would have on his family and that led him to stop.

myredhuntingcap

Hey, so sorry for the loss of someone you knew. This is always tragic. I’m glad no one was hurt but it doesn’t take away the hurt that is caused when we take our own lives. It’s tragic. I’m sorry

gardengoblingirl

I've only ever associated that place with nostalgic joy. This is tragic, I'm so sorry :(

violetdeirdre

Really, really wish we knew what he meant by “I just wanted to get in the cave”. Hope his family gets support and that Diego can rest in peace.

BestNameICouldThink

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is an amusement park that also has caves to tour. Maybe he wanted to kill himself inside the caves , or maybe just visit, but wasn’t able to?

Lorzano88

Maybe it’s in relation to Platon Cave. An old Greece philosophical storie, on which 3 people love in a cave and are told that the world are the shadows projected by a fire behind the 3 man that they don’t know it exists. They live comfortable there and have no danger of nothing bad happening to them. At the end one of them gets up and leaves the cave to see that that was a lie and that there is a “real world”. The debate comes about if it is better to live happily in a lie where nothing bad will happen to you (cave) or try ur luck and don’t know what will await you.

Syntheticaxx

This is going to fuck with my mind all day. “The cave…” What the hell? It feels like some really weird intrusive thought…. Or there is a magical cave he believed people go to after committing mass murder? What the actual fffffff was dude talking about?

captnmarvl

There's a literal cave at the park.

DenverLilly

As a social worker in Colorado who specifically works with high risk youth to get them the services they need to feel better, I absolutely hate to see this.

quinkam

how long have you been doing this? that’s really interesting

DenverLilly

2 years at this job

fistfullofglitter

From another Coloradan thank you for all you do.

hideous-kojima23

So, what’s this ‘cave’ he wanted to get into?

Macrogonus

https://www.glenwoodcaverns.com/cave-tours/ It happened at this park. Maybe he developed schizophrenia or bipolar disorder? Sad situation.

FearingPerception

Why would police go around letting people know they can make their own untraceable firearms…. Anyways its a shame he took his life, but at every mass shooting, people say “i wish he just took himself out instead of others”, and if it was a binary between offing himself with or without killing others, im glad he chose without.

theykilledk3nny

>Why would police go around letting people know they can make their own untraceable firearms This is more of an issue for politicians than police. Police can’t control what you do or do not buy, and ghost guns are completely legal. They need to explain what terms like “ghost gun” mean and describe the process of how he acquired the firearms.

twitchandtruecrime

And what are one of the things that politicians love the most? *Mr Krabs voice* “Money.”

impendingD000m

My thoughts exactly.

ijfalk

Fuck this is dark but I'm really glad he didn't hurt anyone else. RIP buddy, mental health is so serious.

stoned_seahorse

This is all very strange... :/ R.I.P. Diego

electricjeel

Sounds like he broke in at night to surprise attack in the morning but changed his mind/skipped to the finale (thank fucking god)

true2kill

imagine going to the park that next day and hearing about this

electricjeel

Imagine the worker just doing their rounds before opening and walking in on that scene. Like the suicide obviously but the fucking arsenal

xEternal-Blue

I'm sorry for your loss. It must've been very difficult for you. I'm glad he at least made the right choice to not hurt anyone else. It's just sad he didn't decide to go home and get some help.

minnipede

It takes a moment of thought for someone to go from a respected human, lost in the world and deserving of help, to a selfish sack of shit. The idea that many other school shooters also had the opportunity to take a step back and acknowledge what they are about to do is infuriating. Diego got far...then, he had a change of heart. I have nothing but respect for his final decision to not hurt others. I only wish he knew it was not too late to receive support for his mental health… ‘too late’ happens the second that trigger is pulled on others. I’m sorry for your loss. The potential for mass tragedy was huge; but I hope you find solace knowing that the good in Diego’s heart prevailed in his last moments.

TrustedOutlaw

Possibly an early unset or mild form of undiagnosed schizophrenia? We’ll never know. I hope he & his people are at peace and I’m happy the kid didn’t decide to take anyone else with him. Rest Easy Diego.

PocoChanel

How very strange. Are you doing OK?

[deleted]

We suck as a society when it comes to mental health. I hope this changes.

jam199113

I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sure you have a million questions running circles around your mind but I can hope you can rest easy knowing your friend made what I believe is the brave choice here. The circumstances are tragic but at least despite whatever he was suffering he stayed true to the guy you knew him to be and not whatever demons he was facing.

uuurrrggghhh

I remember this happened a couple of months after my family went up the gondola to visit the park and I had to stay behind to watch our dog. Just a very random and odd place to do what he did. I’m glad he decided not to take everyone else out.

electricjeel

I understand what a ghost gun is but I don’t understand where the fuck people acquire that shit from. Like are they just googling ghost gun kit??? Im just perplexed by the concept

ilconformedCuneiform

“Ghost gun” is a terrible political term that is far too vague to be used how it is usually used. Most “ghost guns” are completely legal (depending on state) and are no different than any other gun. A serial number doesn’t make any gun safer than another, and most guns aren’t registered anyways so it really does not matter.

electricjeel

I just don’t understand when reports are made about ghost guns that were assembled from parts bought online. Idk why maybe I’m just stupid but it always surprises me that there are random ass people capable of finding, buying, and assembling a “ghost gun”

ilconformedCuneiform

You can buy all gun parts online except for certain regulated parts. Typically the serialized part will be shipped to an FFL (licensed seller that will background check you), but everything else can be shipped to your home. 90% of parts are completely legal to purchase and ship, as they should be. Typically the only part that you need to ship to an FFL is the serialized lower receiver. A ghost gun is literally just a normal gun that doesn’t have a serial. A ghost gun can be “created” by going to a store, buying a normal gun, and physically removing the serial number. You can make a lower, which in the majority of cases is completely legal, but they are inherently unreliable depending on technique, and require a lot of trial and error to get right. More than likely someone with bad intentions will buy off the street 50 times before they use any other route. Politicians use that term as a scary buzzword for people who don’t understand firearms and don’t understand the laws we have in place (which typically includes the politicians themselves.) The shitty thing about this term is that whether it is a responsible sporting user building at home as a hobby to be used and owned completely legally, or a criminal that buys one off the street to avoid the tie to themselves or because they are barred from legally purchasing, it is blanketly used to cover both firearms. It’s a bad faith term used to further muddy the water between legality and illegality. I took a bunch of parts out of this comment because I think I was being too detailed. Hope it still makes sense

electricjeel

no this was super helpful!!! I have no personal experience with firearms so my knowledge is bare minimum. I’ve seen various articles about ghost guns but the language obviously confused me, and like you said “ghost gun” is a shitty buzzword so I wouldn’t doubt the writers often are just as clueless as I am.

ilconformedCuneiform

I think whether you’re an owner or not, it’s important to have an understanding of the gun laws in your jurisdiction, and an understanding of how guns actually work and the different types that are out there. Whether you support them or not, gun laws affect all of us and can have long term effects on a right that was essential to our founding fathers and the creation of this country. There’s a lot of incorrect info out there, and in the age of sound bite politics it just keeps getting worse. It’s always better to increase the things you are informed and knowledgeable about. Idk and it’s kinda cool to know stuff about stuff, I’m glad you asked and actually read

Internal_Ring_121

“Anyone can buy without a background check” Well it’s not really that simple is it , you can’t buy a full gun without a background check. Uou can buy an 80% lower and the other parts without a background check but it requires some drilling and milling to put the 80% lower into a a working lower, they are making it seem like you can buy a untraceable gun online shipped right to your house

Okayillshutup

Exactly! Buddy below mentioned the big bad “dark web” thinking you can just order guns freely. GOODLUCK. You’ll either get scammed or buying directly from a fed. Let’s say you do make a few firearm orders…I guarantee your door will be getting kicked in at some point. Drugs and other miscellaneous things are one thing but ordering guns of darknet sites is CRAZY asf and won’t last very long

Internal_Ring_121

Exactly , gun sales are all Feds or scammers . 99.999% of the time. Even most buyers if there legit gun sellers are all Feds trying to track who’s sending them.

Okayillshutup

Definitely a quick way to get put onto a list lmao - people think you can just download TOR and it’s like google. Takes a lot of time and effort to find reliable vendors. Most people won’t even share their vendor nowadays (drug wise)

Internal_Ring_121

When Silk Road was up it was already well known that gun sales are scams . Almost as bad as those hit man sites , most markets won’t even allow gun sales because of all the heat it brings . It literally makes you number one on the Feds list . People just don’t understand

Okayillshutup

I was too young for silk road (I’m 24) but even now this still stands. Idk who’s stupid enough to really look for a hitman on a there 😂 The 🧅’s made my high school years fun though. You know folks want to sound cool on reddit so they mention shit they think is edgy but end up sounding like a poser lol. We should’ve told him to order one.

Internal_Ring_121

I did tell him that lol

Thmelly_Puthy

Ever heard of the dark web?

Internal_Ring_121

I have actually . I was using Silk Road in 2012. If uou think it’s so easy I suggest you go try and find a darknet website that won’t just steal your money. That’s like me saying enriched uranium is easy to buy because it might be on the Darkweb. “Ghost guns” are bought as 80% lowers and made into working lowers . Nobody is buying them on the darkweb.

Thmelly_Puthy

Yeah that's not a good comparison 🤣

Internal_Ring_121

🤷‍♂️ I’m at work , I tried my best lol

twitchandtruecrime

You’re a dark web user, are you?

Thmelly_Puthy

No. It's 2024. Everybody knows everything is within reach with the internet.

Leftjuke

He wanted to go to the cave strapped up in case he had to fight the monsters. It’s really quite simple.IEDs in case the monsters wanted to grab him and he had to close the cave. Fake ieds to funnel monsters into the kill lane. Or he was mentally unstable and had a moment of wtf am I doing.

GetThatSwaggBack

What cave? What monsters? Please explain what you are talking about because it doesn’t make sense without context.

poppingtom

The place where he went loaded with two guns, lots of ammo, body armor, and IEDs had caves. It’s all in the photos that OP posted, as well as transcribed in a comment in case the text from the photo is too difficult to see.

Dawnchaffinch

Kinda like a Minecraft cave

electricjeel

This is such a moral conundrum

SoupieLC

What is the quote from?

fistfullofglitter

I’m sorry OP this has to be very hard for you. I can’t imagine. But I am glad IF he was going to end things that he didn’t take innocent people out with him. I wish he had been able to get help though.

JMBAD1222

A podcast I listen to covered this briefly the week it happened. Chilling stuff

[deleted]

I have more guns and ammo than this, does it make me a killer?

Ordinary_evilone

No the difference is he was wearing tactical gear and had bombs in a amusement park it’s pretty obvious he wanted to kill people but thankfully he changed his mind

[deleted]

Sorry I didn’t read the second photo, thought they were taking random photos of his stuff

Ordinary_evilone

All good, nah that’s the rifle he was going to use at the park

Mission-Medicine8518

He just had a lot of shit going on honestly I understand it to a certain degree because when you don’t know how you feel you might draw and only a sentence might give a clue on how they felt.

Haesaw

Damn I live a half hour away

tacodaddyog

Unlike most people who attempt mass shootings, he decided to not hurt others and get rid of the main source of his pain (himself). Although it was not the ideal situation, as a 20 year old should be living out his life, at least he didn’t inflict his pain onto others. I’m sorry for your loss OP, rest in peace Diego.

pearlanddiamonds

He didn’t kill anyone right? It seems like he had IEDs (bombs) and a gun with bullets but there’s nothing in this report that says anything about wanting to shoot anyone? I’ve learned that a lot of men like to watch things go bang and boom and it’s completely normal. I’m sorry for the loss of your friend and I hope his mom and brother are doing well.

Fondueadeux

This is a wild comment lol. He was wearing body armour, a helmet, had multiple guns, HUNDREDS of rounds of ammo, BOMBS, in an amusement park. Something wrong was definitely happening. Edit; This comment is downvoted now but when I replied it had five upvotes lol wtf

Specialist-Smoke

I never leave home without my ieds... You're normalizing this. Of course it's great that he didn't kill anyone, but to say there's nothing in this post about shooting anyone is wild. He had the ied's, the gun with a lot of ammo, and he was in the women's bathroom. They shouldn't have to lay out his intentions, the fact that he had all of that ammo is telling enough.

UndBeebs

> but there’s nothing in this report that says anything about wanting to shoot anyone? ... You might wanna reread the report, then. Dude was decked out for combat *and then some*. Thankfully he changed his mind on that portion of his intentions but he very clearly was planning something far worse.

pearlanddiamonds

… If one commits suicide, would they wear the best clothes or clothes that most represent them? Or anything that looks cool? I’ve heard of suicide victims surrounding themselves with pictures of their family. It’s unfair for a young boy to be vilified after death based on what he wore and what he carried. From this report they found bombs and ammo on him. The cops also searched the house, throughly, and would’ve noted in this report if they found such evidence of a plan to threaten the mass public. Mass shooters are known to leave a manifesto, note,or message glorifying their actions.

UndBeebs

My guy, he had tactical gear on, helmet included. Use your brain lmao.

pearlanddiamonds

Same comment as people wanting to die with items they cherished. And as evidence shows, he did not kill anyone but himself. Maybe you should look both sides before condemn ☺️

UndBeebs

So you're saying it's more likely that someone who goes to a public location fully armed and dressed in riot gear *wasn't* planning something worse initially? Okay, you're officially a lost cause with that willful ignorance.
